How to disable a mail.app account

In Apple's OSX Mail app, I've got a mailbox that connects to an  server that is no longer valid. That is, the address no longer works.
I'd like to have Mail stop checking that address. But I'd like to keep everything as is otherwise, if possible.
In Mail preferences, I tried unchecking "include when automatically checking mail" -- but the account still gets checked when I hit "Get Mail" manually.
I tried unchecking the box for "enable this account", too, but when I do that, all messages in that mailbox seem to disappear. Are they saved anywhere? I don't want to lose them and I still want to be able to search them.
Is there some other way to do this?
Many thanks to anybody who can help --
Steve

This seems like a pretty basic question -- but there's nothing in the help system about it, and searching here, I can't find anything specific. Can anybody help, please?
I want to completely stop checking mail from an account and yet still have old emails from that account show up in my In Box. Is that possible?
Thanks,
Steve

I think Apple has broken a rule here: don't impose organisational changes on your users.
They should have made this optional - Instead of which they have a number of disgruntled users who find their tried and tested mail organisation is broken.
You can see that some Apple hack reluctantly acknowledged this by providing a "Classic" button which nevertheless doesn't remove the "conversations" issue.
    Most frutstrating.
The other frustration is "Mission Control" and a long linear incompetent organisational paradigm replacing "Spaces".
A bit of a hiccup, this Lion: Are they running out of things to fix because it's working fine?

  • How can I disable the Mail app completely?

Hi, I have an iMac running OS X v. 10.5.6 and do not want to go through the Mail app for my e-mail. I never opened the program on my own, but the app keeps opening on its own and asking for me to set it up. I tried to set it to manual opening, but it would still pop up on a daily basis.
At one point, I logged in using an old Yahoo account, thinking that this would solve the problem, but it still opened up on its own daily.
I've done everything in Preferences I can think of. I even tried removing the app completely, but I would get a pop-up asking where the Mail app went. When I brought it back, the same issues came up.
    I have Mail v. 3.5. Help!

There are many good email applications available as alternatives to Apple's Mail.
My own preference is Eudora but Thunderbird looks pretty good too.
There is no obligation to use Apple's Mail.
I don't get any warnings telling me I have to do anything with it. I can't understand what these warnings would be.
Try opening the Mail application ---> preferences - and set the application to check for mail "manually" i.e. only when you tell it to. Which could be never.

  • TS3579 How do I reinstall mail app on Snow Leopard 10.6.8

Is there an update file that I can pull a recent version of the Mac Mail app from onto my machine?
I am on Mac OSX 10.6.8
    Situation:
I never use Mac Mail, but a recent client of mine was trying to configure it and so I thought I'd pull it up and help them setup an account on the phone.
The problem is,Mac Mail doesn't come up at all. I rarely use email right on my machine, what with Gmail and Thunderbird as my usual modalities with email. The thought of littering my machine with actual email files seems archaic.
    So I deleted Mail app.
I then ran Software Update to see if it would notice the app as missing and attempt to reinstall but that was just wishful thinking. App store doesn't seem to care about existing packages on the machine beyond whatever is purchased in App store so that was a waste of time also.
I don't want to have to go through a lot of shenanigans with update programs and DVDs ...
I remember seeing somewhere how someone simply pulled the app out a recent update and just dragged it onto their machine - if anyone knows which update for 10.6.x Snow Leopard would have this app in it thanks in advance.
    Thanks in advance

    FIXED - THE SOLUTION
    1. Locate your Apple Install DVD #1 - "Mac OSX Install DVD"
    2. Download & install Pacifist See http://www.charlessoft.com/
    3. Download the "Security Update 2012-004" file from here:http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1586
    4. Delete all existing versions of Mail.app on system (See also https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4419244?start=0&tstart=0)
    5. Open Pacifist and choose Open Package
Browse to the Optional Installs folder on the DVD, and open Optional Installs package (mpkg)
Pacifist will take a few minutes to open the package and display its contents.
"Now would be a great time to fill out your registration card" or go get a cup of coffee or cocktail, yes you have time.
Once the package contents have been revealed, locate the Mail.app and attempt to drag it to your Applications folder.
When you do this, Pacifist will prompt you for permission to extract it to where you dragged it to.
    Click Extract
    Then enter your password:
And Pacifist will extract the Mail.app to your Applications folder:
Yes, my apps are all nicely organized - it is legal to organize and declutter the disorganized mess that is your Applications folder, which is how Apple installs it. The only problem is that because Apple thinks a disorganized mess of an Applications folder is just fine, their people don't take into account actually locating the Mail.app when they do the security update, and just assume you'll have it in the sheeple location of "Applications". That's what caused this problem to begin with.
Now, if you try to run this version of the app, on a system previously updated to 10.6.8, you will get an error:
    6. Right, so now you run the SecUpd2012 004, and reboot.
As a side note,  Security Update 2012-004 will s h i t  an unusable version of the Quicktime player into your Applications folder also.
See it there without the proper icon.
Since I had accidently deleted Quicktime 7 from my machine, not really missing it, but I was wondering what happened to it ... so using Pacifist I was also able to get a working version back onto my system the same way as Mail. So while Security Update 2012-004 s h i t s this unusable version into the Applications folder, it does nothing to update the Quicktime 7 app. Perhaps someone else can explain that. So I just deleted the unusable Quicktime Player app.
Now, Mail.app works fine even before reboot, as does Quicktime as is from the Optional Installs mpkg but you gotta reboot after the update but it should work already.

  • How to silence Apple Mail App

    Hi,
one of the features I love about my Mac compared to the former Windows-**** is the fact that it allows me to work undisturbed.
With the new mail app this kind of changed.
I have one account which I can only access from within my company network or if I startup VPN. Under Snow Leopard I would simply click on the reconnect icon to have mail reestablish the connection to our company's mailserver and when I was done I would disconnect from the VPN again and in apple mail simply the connection would be marked as being unavailable.
The latter unfortunately does not seem to work under Lion. Whenever I disconnect from VPN Mail starts bragging me to enter my password (since it cannot connect to the server...). This goes on two to three times and after cancelling the attempts to enter my password again it simply shows the account as disconnect (like under Snow Leopard).
Has anyone an idea how I could get Lion's mail app to just silently drop the connection instead of asking me?
    Regards,
    equinox

Hi, in the preferences of Mail.app unchecking "Include when automatically checking for new messages" should do the trick, I suppose: Preferences>Accounts>Highlight the account in question>Advanced

  • Gmail iPhone app & mailto links, "Mail Link to This Page", etc. / Send-only Mail app account

Is it possible to handle mailto links & the like (e.g., "Mail Link to This Page" option in Safari) with the Gmail iPhone app?
If not, I would like to setup a Mail account for the inbuilt Apple iPhone Mail app, but only use it for outgoing messages.  I do not want it to download messages, as the Gmail app will already be doing this.  How can I setup the iPhone Mail app as send-only?  (specifically for a Gmail account)
    Thanks.

Is this issue solved for you yet?
I still have the same problem.
Mail.app changes the configurations on my POP settings from "password" to "apop". Since I don't use "apop" I cannot receive mail. Further, after going through each mail account (about 20 of them) and changing them back to "password" and saving each account setting I attempted to receive mail again to no avail. So, I checked the account configurations again only to discover that mail.app will not save the account settings to "password" and is forcing the "apop" settings.

  • Mail.app Account Auto Creation?

I've spent the last good few hours setting up an Xserve G5 with a nice, clean install of 10.5.2 Server.
I'm sure I found a function where the Standard version of the server automatically set up users' Mail.app on the client machines when I was testing 10.5.2 a few days ago.. but I can't for the life of me, find such a feature in the Advanced Server.
Am I shooting in the dark? Is there such a function available? My users are probably best described as technological dumbasses, and if they have to create their mail accounts, one of them's going to jump out of a window.
Any pointers to such a feature would be greatly appreciated.

While nobody's interested in answering if Advanced Server can do this (and after quite a bit of looking around, I can't find any options for it to do so), I wonder if anyone may know about how cPanel/WHM (www.cpanel.net) can create setup scripts for Mail.app?

    Hi,
How to Disable UAC in a standard account on windows 8.1 single language OS.
application for mobile modem (TATA DOCOMO) always asks for administrator password, in windows 7 I used to just set UAC never Prompt in admin account and same setting would reflect in standard user account and then users where not prompted for password but in
windows 8.1 single language edition I have disabled UAC in admin account but in standard account the setting for UAC was still in default (notify me when programs try to make changes to my computer), if I try to set never, the ok button is greyed out with
message saying that you must be logged in as administrator.
And Group policy editor, local security policy are not available in windows 8.1 single language.
can any one give command to disable UAC  using CMD.
    OR
set registry to not prompt for admin password.

But in control panel -> user accounts -> Change user account control settings
I can set the settings to always notify

But I can't set it to never prompt because only administrator as power to do that and if I set never prompt in  administrator account the settings in standard user remains in

Main problem is application from unknown source always prompt for admin password.

  • How to disable Leap Motion app from startup?

Hi, I installed the Leap Motion on my Mac running Mountain Lion. Whenever my computer boots up, the Leap Motion app automatically starts up as well. I tried checking the specific settings of Leap Motion but there was no configuration there. I also tried to look on the Startup Items (System Preferences > Users & Groups) but there was no entry regarding Leap Motion.
Is there another way to check how to disable this from happening?
    Thanks.

You will find a line item
    com.leapmotion.Leap-Motion.plist
    Library/LaunchAgents
Just rename from .plist to .bak - incase you would like to auto startup again.
I believe Leap Motion chose to use LaunchAgent rather than 'Login Items' is because they couldn't get it to startup all the time.

  • Mail app: Account unavailable

Im having problems with the mail app in windows 8 in regards to sending.
I have multiple accounts setup via Imap/smtp from my company website.  The issue is when I send an email it says "email address" is unavailable.  It seems to be syncing mail and folders without any issues.
The account is setup with "outgoing server requires authentication" and I have tested using the same settings in outlook which does in fact work without any problems.
I have tried deleting/re-adding the account.  Uninstalling/reinstalling mail and even reinstalling windows and running all available updates for both store and windows.

    Kind regards,

I have the same problem, receiving works fine, sending doesn't anymore as it worked fine before. In my case it happens with my hosting/domain mail account.
The only thing that works for me to send my e-mails is using my ISP"s smtp settings.
But now I can only send mails when í'm on my ISP's network and therefore i want it solved
I did some hours of troubleshooting, things like:
Checked settings over 10 times (why, i'm not an idiot lol)
Changed settings (other ports, other password, ssl/no sll, changed server name (virtual so from mail.... to mail11... and into the IP)
Contacted my hosting to report / double check however outlook in win8 and my mobile works fine with the same setup/settings.
Enabled telnet and did some sessions, all fine...
Removed NIS2013 and also reinstalled again (it's needed for my job ;))
Used the netstat command, nothing wrong
    Clean boot (msconfig)
Research on internet (technet, ms answers, ...) I found a lot more posts...
There are some tips like remove the mail app / reinstall, add the full imap/smtp name if you hosting is using virutal servers (example: change mail.domain.com into mail32.domain.com) that worked in some cases.
So, either their is an issue within Win8 / Mail App or we have the same software / app that is causing this problem, for example we are all using office 2013 preview, AV/Firewall sofware NIS, ...  or it's our ISP as the mail app connection could be
    blocked.
