How to disable automatic updates

Today, for the very first time, updating Adobe came with the notice it would make automatic updates the
default setting. It said one could change that by going to Update Adobe Preferences. However,
every single button on the application does not yield such an update.
FYI - I have some back ground in electronic warfare and internet attacks. I believe automatic updates
are a dangerous setting in two instances:
1) You are running a program (such as a compiler or critical low level editor that will fail if it does
not have total control) which can be interrupted by or be messed up by the install; also most
installers do not want to be running at the same time as another installer is running;
2) You are the victim of a peculiar kind of cyber attack that USES auto updates to DELIVER malware.
For this reason, users with expertise and appropriate systems need to be able to control when
updates happen. The notice system is fine. This "you must do it" and the hard to find way to turn
it off (assuming it exists) isn't fine. FYI the adobe information base article on the subject
- if you call it - refuses to load and says it is no longer available!

I am not quite sure what you mean by that; don't you see this:

That may depend on your installed Reader version; for Reader XI it is under Edit | Preferences | Updater:

• How do I disable automatic updates?

I am going to have to use Firefox version 28 forever, exposing myself to many security risks in the process, because I do not like the drastic redesign of the interface in version 29 and Mozilla have not included an option to switch to the old interface.
Many support forum posts argue that bringing back the old interface is a 'simple' matter, but it is not. I have spent many hours on two PCs so far, fiddling with the recommended third-party add-ons (e.g. Classic Theme Restorer) in the attempt to get the browser looking the old way again. I can ascertain with confidence that it is NOT possible to get things looking exactly as they did before, and certainly not looking like the particular customized setup I had myself.
I have now re-installed version 28, and intend to continue using it indefinitely. However, automatic updates are still enabled, and Firefox has already tried to update itself to version 29 again. How can I disable automatic updates for good? I have tried some tricks like deleting the update files and then removing the update URL in about:config, but a new update was still downloaded somehow.
How can I nix automatic updates for good?

Hi,
It is true that the Classic Theme Restorer add-on will NOT bring back all of your customized settings/appearance on Firefox 28, but it will help a little It's recommended that you stay on the latest version to receive the latest security fixes and bug patches but you're free to downgrade if you want.
You can set these prefs in
about:config
to disable automatic updating:
app.update.auto - false
app.update.enabled - false
app.update.silent - false
how do I go about disabling automatic updates?

Great, i can log in with another identity, something i don't have OR i can go muck around in the program files for FF. Usual ridiculous geeky stuff from Mozulla. no place to just turn it off.
So every time an update is coming, if I am lucky i will be notified and i can turn it down. go safari.

• How do I disable automatic updating? I am about to switch to another browser because of the frequency with which I am delayed by an automatic update without the option to put it off to another time.

I have been using Firefox and its ancestors since the beginning. I am at the end of my rope with it. When I click a link or open the browser it is because that is what I seek to have happen. Unless there is a way to turn off automatic updating, I am going to pack it in and find another platform. I cannot see what would be lost if Firefox would do its updating on the way out, when my attention has moved on, and it is not taking up my time. Is there a solution to this with Firefox?

• Disable automatic update

How can I Turn off automatic updater and Macafee downloads? I am running it on XP with another antivirus.

Ok thanks. So this will no longer "touch" the songs in my iPod but it will still charge my iPod's battery, right?
My dad wanted to delete the songs I've downloaded that are already in my iPod, so I really need to disable automatic update.
Oh and one more thing: if I want to put new songs in my iPod, how do I do it now that automatic update is turned off?

• Disabling Automatic Updates

Hi...
Adobe's Automatic Updater has been driving me crazy... have all the latest updates but it insists on updating them again and again and downloading a 350Mb plus file... so, a search on Google produced this site with simple instructions on how to turn it off:
http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=kb402251
A few caveats though:
1/ Let the program run to the final screen
2/ 'Preferences' is not a tab but more of a link on the left of the screen
3/ Maybe disabling Automatic Update is enough... but i unchecked all the programs as well...
Cheers... Hope it works! Time will tell!!

Hi,
If they use a vulnerability scanner, it has a list of all known oracle's vulnerabilities and as long as you won't have patched the DB they will be seen by the scanner, and there's nothing you can do to avoid this unless you can work without network.
You can use sol.beach solution and explain your IT team that connections can only come from your local PC. If this solution is not possible, removal might be the only way to stop a vulnerability scanner.

I have an older mac and it wants me to update to itunes 10 but my mac is too old and I cant figure out how to disable the update so I can use the store.

If Software Update is offering the update then it would be compatible with your model. Unfortunately, you haven't provided us with any information on your hardware that would enable us to determine if it really is too old.
If you really wish to disable the update alert then the next time Software Update opens, select the update in the list then select "Ignore update" from SU's Update menu.

How to disable automatic opening of previously viewed items in Preview or TextEdit in Max OSX Lion? It was no such issue on Snow Leopard OS.
Please help

This is a new behavior introduced in Lion. You can disable it completely via System Preferences, General: uncheck the "Restore windows..." box toward the bottom.
You can disable this behavior on a case by case basis by either closing all windows before quitting, or holding the option key while quitting, or holding the shift key while launching from dock.

It is your only option if you want to get rid of that other user account. It seems the system is Hard Set to boot to that account. How and why I have not Idea but the first thing you should of done was Restoring it to the Original OS, if it was not Mt Lion to begin with, in doing so getting rid of all other accounts and files from that other account.
Time to Bit the Bullet and Erase the drive completely and reinstall the original shipping version of OS X on that system.

• How to disable automatic login and to see other accounts?

I bought MacBook Pro Retina with Mac OS X 10.8.2 in a shop, where there already was account "kiosk".
I created new account, gave him Administrator priviliges.
In the Preferences / Users & Groups I see kiosk account as "Managed", and my new account as "Admin".
I set:
System Preferences / Security & Privacy / General / Disable automatic login = Checked.
System Preferences / Users & Groups / Login Options / Automatic login = Off.
But still I have two issues:
1) After start the laptop automatically logins into kiosk account, while I explicitly switched off this option
2) Apart from kiosk account, the OS doesn't see any other accounts, for example my new account.
For example, when I changed login shell for kiosk account into /usr/bin/false, I couldn't login at all. The OS said something like, there are no active accounts. So I had to set login shell back to /bin/bash using single-user mode.
The questions are:
How to disable automatic login into kiosk account?
How to see a choice between kiosk account and my new account in the login dialog?
How to delete kiosk account? Currently the delete option is disabled for kiosk in System Preferences / Users & Groups.
So far after laptop start I automatically login into kiosk, then switch into my new account with entering a password, which is weird.
Thanks in advance.

You're probably getting this from the MyTreo ap on your phone. Click on MyTreo to start it. When it's up, push the menu key and then choose Updates from the drop-list. Set Auto-Update to Off and hit <OK>.
