How to disable discrete graphics card on dv7?

My dv7 6000 CTO (XW899AV) has been having graphics card issues for quite a while now (frequent screen flashes followed by error notifications), but lately it's gotten a lot worse.  Now I get a black screen after just a few minutes of use.
I'm nearly positive the problem lies with the discrete graphics card (ATI 6770M).   I'd like to disable the discrete card and only use the integrated Intel HD 3000.  Unfortunately the BIOS seems to hide the option to do this.  I tried disabling the ATI card in the device manager, but when I rebooted the card was enabled again.  Is there a way to disable the discrete card, even though HP seems hell bent on preventing me from doing so?  If I can't, the laptop is basically a brick.

I see that you are looking to disable your discrete graphics card. As you have seen that isn't going to work as the notebook is designed to work with both graphics card. What are the error notifications are you getting? If you can give me that exact error message we might be able to fix the cause of the problem. What operating system are you using?

how to disable the graphics card of my macbook air please?

I'm guessing there is a language issue here.  The graphics card is the actual hardware (chip) in your computer that allows it to create graphics and show them on your display.  There is no way to disable the graphics card on your Air because there would be no way to use it (it would not be able to display anything on any display).  This is a little different on machines with multiple graphics processors, but that's not the case with your Air.  I'd imagine you know what you want to do, we're just having trouble understanding your question.

  • How to disable 2nd graphic card?

I have a laptop Sony VGN-Z21XN/B with two graphic cards:
    1) 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07)
    2) 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation G98 [GeForce 9300M GS] (rev a1)
Unfortunately both are running at the same time so my laptop is hot, noisy and the battery is discharged very soon. Is there any possibility how to permanently disable nVidia graphic card somewhere in system? I already tried disable nVidia modules in rc.conf, but without result and google doesn't help
    Thank for advice.

I've just checked my bios settings and there is no option to set or disable graphic card. Bios is actually very poor.
The problem is that sony provides only windows (vista and 7, not XP) software switch so there is no HW support for switching... I am looking for something like disable hardware in windows device manager. Simply tell arch: don't use that stupid piece of crap...
However I'll have a look to site that you posted

  • How to disable Nvidia Graphics card to improve battery life in Bios?

Hi I am trying to figure out how to disable my Nvidia Graphics Card with my Custom Bios. I don't want to tinker with my Bios settings without getting some advice. Thanks!!!! I have MSI GE70 2PE 012US laptop. My custom bios is this version E1759SSS.516.

You can't really disable nvidia graphics as all laptops with dedicated card can't just use Intel HD only..

  • How can I test my discrete graphics card in an MBP Retina?

How can I test the hardware on the discrete Nvidia grpahics card in my late 2012 MBP Retina?
I've had a *lot* of problems with it which I won't repeat here but the latest fun thing it's doing is crashing and requiring a hard reset any time *anything* attempts to access the discrete graphics card.  This includes but is not limited to:
*Opening system profiler and clicking on Graphics (it displays a blank screen)
    *Running a 3D graphics benchmark
*Running intensive mathematical calculations on the GPU
*Connecting to an external monitor with the thunderbolt port and using the computer for a short period of
None of these things actually work and after unsuccessfully attempting any of them the computer becomes very unstable shortly there after and usually crashes and requires hard reset.  One time I got a crash report that said something about GPU panic.
Any recommendations?  I get the sense that the apple hardware test is not doing a thoroough test of the GPU if at all.
    Thanks.

If they add OSX support for this product and it comes in at a reasonable price point, it could be an attractive solution.

Also, there are products from other companies that allow connection to PCIe cards through thunderbolt.  These two are geared more towards professional use (Audio/Video I/O cards).

  • Thinkpad Yoga 15, discrete graphics card disabled

I just purchased a Thinpad Yoga with a discrete graphics card, NVIDIA GeForce 840M. It's disabled. I've tried the most recent driver from NVIDIA and the driver on Lenovo's site -- version 9.18.13.3360
Anyone have any idea about this?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi Horseatingweeds,
As per the screen shot I think the drivers may have got corrupted, uninstall both the graphic drivers and run ThinkVantage System Update utility, and make sure whether the drivers are not updated from MS updates.
That seems a little old, so I looked around. There are later versions, up to 1.24 4/6/2015 for ThinkPad S1 Yoga: http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/ds038334
Please do not update the BIOS manually, instead of that run ThinkVantage System Update utility to check for the exact drivers and application for your system.

    Hope this helps.

  • Windows 8.1 freezes while booting up with discrete graphic card T520

    Hi all,
Hoping someone can help me here. If I use my discrete video card (nvs 42000m) to boot into windows, it will freeze on the sign in page or sometimes on the metro page however when Optimus is enabled it works just fine.
So I thought it was a driver issue. I went to Nvidia and downloaded their latest video card driver for windows 8.1. No help
Uninstalled that, went to Lenovo's support site and installed their recommended driver and all other windows 8 drivers. Again it would freeze
Booted into safe mode uninstalled that, turned optimus back on, and this time used Windows update to install my video drivers (intel and Nvidia both this time).
Didn't work. So I spent maybe another hour or so fiddling and after many restarts i finally found the culprit. It was the Lenovo monitor driver. As soon as I uninstalled that, everything worked fine and I could finally use my laptop with optimus disabled and discrete video card enabled.
Windows update keeps recommending me to update the monitor driver but if I do, then it freezes again so I'm just leaving it as the default generic monitor.
The reason why I made this thread is to inform and save potential users in the future who have a similar laptop to mine (t520 with hd 3000 and nvidia 42000m) with Windows 8 installed and they happen to choose to solely run their laptop with the discrete graphics card, remember to uninstall your monitor driver.
I am open to recommendations and other alternatives.

  • Computer freezes when switching to discrete Graphics Card.

Hi! I have a W530 with the K1000M graphics card, along with the Nvidea Optimus program. Whenever I run a program that uses my discrete graphics card, I get the error "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered." I've used my discrete graphics card before with no problems, although my computer has had two major changes since the last time I've used it (see notes below).
Solutions I've tried: Updating with the correct drivers through Windows Update (update failed), updating driver through Lenovo website (broke display), updating drivers through Nvidea website (driver installed, didn't fix problem). Nothing works, and the Lenovo driver basically disabled my display. It took me hours to fix just that-- for some reason, whenever I crash, my computer looks at drive X instead of C. Had to screw around for a while just to let me do a system restore.
I'm rather upset about the whole thing because I really like my laptop. Right now, I've just set Optimus to never use the discrete graphics card...
    Thanks for reading!
*Note 1: I have some aftermarket parts: Crucial RAM and a mSATA SSD. I've had these parts in for over a year with no problems.
*Note 2: The motherboard in my laptop blew a transistor or something a few weeks ago. My university's computer shop replaced it under warranty.
*Note 2.1: I'm not sure if the new motherboard is causing the problems or Windows 8.1, or something else entirely. I haven't used my discrete graphics card since before both the 8.1 update and my motherboard being fixed.

This happened to me whenever I was trying to run 3dsMax Design 2013 in Optimus mode, everytime I attempted to open that program it would simply refuse and say the nvidia driver had just crashed.
It was solved with nvidia 305.93 I think (I currently run 331.82 which is the latest) look for the most up to date driver at the nvidia drivers download page.
That is really an nvidia driver related problem but you should also update your Intel video card driver too as previously suggested. (and if the program that is crashing is an Autodesk product be sure to be up to date too (with all the nuances that it implies), I'm currently running 3dsmax 13 PU6 and it works)
So what you need to do is to uninstall your nvidia driver completely, reboot, install the most up to date from nvidia. reboot, via windows update install the lates Intel video driver (if something appears) (don't install it from the intel web site). In device manager my intel driver appears to be 9.17.10.2843
(Maybe it didn't work the last time for you because maybe you didn't perform a clean installation)

  • T510 w/ NVIDIA NVS 3100M -- Window 7 not recognizing discrete graphics card

    Hi --
I just got a T510 w/ discrete graphics card, ie, the NVIDIA NVS 3100M w/ 512mb of dedicated video memory.
However, when I look in "Performance Information and Tools" under the "View and print detailed performance and system information", I see the graphics as "Intel(R) HD Graphics". Under the "Graphics" section I see this:
    Graphics
    Display adapter type
    NVIDIA NVS 3100M
    Total available graphics memory
    1696 MB
          Dedicated graphics memory
    64 MB
          Dedicated system memory
    0 MB
          Shared system memory
    1632 MB
    Display adapter driver version
    8.17.12.5738
    Primary monitor resolution
    1920x1080
    DirectX version
    DirectX 10
This is a bit confusing, because now it says the adapter is NVIDIA, but the dedicated memory is only 64 MB. Seems odd as I should have 512MB?
    Thanks

I'm fairly certain you can force Optimus to be discrete only or integrated onlyin the BIOS or in some of the Power Manager settings. Otherwise, you can try loading DirectX and seeing what dxdiag tells you about your graphics card.
In addition, Lenovo's implementaiton of Optimus seems to allow you to run certain programs on the IGP and other programs on the discrete chip simultaneously, so it may simply be allocating the Windows benchmark thread to the IGP instead of the NV chip, thereby causing the flawed readings. Don't know exactly how one forces a process to run using the discrete GPU though.

  • 3.86GB usable with discrete graphic card????

    the system tells me
    memory: 4.00GB ( 3.86GB usable )
i have a discrete graphic card on my t510
and my system is 64 bits
    how can this be happened?

Yeah same here with my G555. In both XP and Win7 it says 3g with 2.7g usable. But I'm not sure if my GPU is dedicated or not? In XP it only shows 700mb. In Win7 it shows 256mb dedicated and can share up to 1.1g for a total of 1.4g. Weird to me. But I'm loving Crysis on high though.

  • Discrete graphics card performance drop after overheating

Recently I played Amnesia: The Dark Descent on my pc while overclocking slightly using Sapphire TRIXX. I changed GPU clock from 750 to 84x and memory clock from 900 to 10xx. During a cinematic the com crashed, ctrl at del failed to load up but sound was still coming out. I left it like this for2-5 min before force shutdown. When I turned on my laptop again n tried to play games there was a huge performance drop. Games running at 60 fps turned to 20 plus when using dedicated graphics card only ( I disabled dynamic mode n used fixed mode while playing amnesia also, which means I was purely using the dedicated graphics card.)
My laptop is a hp dm4 3005tx Beats edition, with Intel I5 2.5GHz processor and 8.00 gig ram. I also disabled paging file on my laptop btw, regretting this .
can some1 tell me hw to fix.this problem or can I replace my discrete graphics card? Because my laptop has Radeon hd 7470m and Intel hd graphics

The graphics card is soldered on so no replacement. I would do a wipe and reload of the OS and stop overclocking laptop video cards. They are too sensitive to heat and other issues. You are asking for trouble, and may have already found it. At a minimum run DriverCleaner and remove the video driver until you get back to a low-res screen generic vga hardware and then reinstall the best driver you can find.

  • P7-1235, black screen after adding a discrete graphic card

    Hello,
I tried to install a discrete graphic card to my P7-1235. The card is AMD 7950, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814131478
The card was tested on another computer and could post without problems.
I upgraded the PSU to 600w. and plug both 6pin connectors to GPU. After I push the power button, the computer is running but the screen remains black,  no video signal. I tried to connect the monitor to dvi on  7950 and integrated dvi but no luck. Anyone has any idea how to solve this?
    Thanks so much!

    Hello,
Issue might be related to Secure Boot in BIOS.
Put your original card into the system, and follow the steps on the document link below:

    This must resolve your problem.
    Let me know.

  • Do I need the discrete graphics card?

I'm buying a 15" macbook pro in the next couple of weeks.  I do lots of work on Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop.  Do I need to get the top model with the discrete graphics card or is it not worth the money?

No, it's certainly not geared for gaming! If you do a lot of Photoshop work with 3D renderings, actions, etc., a discrete GPU can be great - particularly one with 2GB of Video RAM. If I were in the market for a new machine, I would certainly purchase the unit that has the discrete GPU.
