How to disable hard disk write caching?
Is there something similar to Windows: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/259716/en

Manually mount the disk, disabling the cache.  With the default mount mechanisms, no.  Details.

  • Check/Turn on Disk write cache

    Dear all,
I read one of the Oracle metalink, and it said, we need to turn on the 'disk write cache' for better file writing throughput, but I am not very sure, whether currently, my newly installed Solaris 9 system have the 'disk write cache' turned on. Please advise,
    - Whichcommand, I can use to check the current setting?
    - How can I turn the 'disk write cache' if it is current off
    Thanks
    Regards,
    Eddie

There are so many things that this could be, particularly when Oracle is brought into play, that I wouldn't know where to really start.
    For example:
    * Are you using parallel directories? If so, are all of the directories on separate hard drives? Better yet, are they on separate SCSI chains?
    * Are you using UFS or VxFS?
    * Did you run an iostat and vxstat to isolate where the slowness is occurring?
    * Are you using any kind of software RAID?
    * What's the speed of your drives?
    * Are your boot disks mirrored? (Yes, boot disk performance can kill an entire server even if the applications and data are not on the boot disk.)
    * Do you have inode access time enabled or disabled?
    * Have you fine-tuned your kernel settings for better disk utilization?
Unfortunately, disk optimization is hell to diagnose. I know because I just went through weeks tuning the I/O of our production server. It's NOT fun.

  • I want to give away or sell a 6500/250 running 7.6.1. How can the hard disk be erased so that the data are gone, not recoverable? thanks, LifeisRich

I want to give away or sell a 6500/250 running 7.6.1. How can the hard disk be erased so that the data are gone, not recoverable? thanks, LifeisRich

I'd recommend that you check for Mac User Group(s) in Orange County.  That's where you'd likely find a diehard Mac fanatic who might want to add your 6500 to his/her collection.  Even if you got nothing for it, it would be better than e-cycling it.  I upgraded my 6500/275 with what was a "large" hard drive at the time (15 GBs), maxed the memory at 128 MBs, installed the 512K L2 cache card, a better ATI Rage Pro PCI graphics card, a USB PCI card, and an internal 56K modem.  With it running OS 9.1, it did all of the pre-OS X stuff I needed it to do.  As I previously mentioned, it's a nice-sounding MP3 player.  Internet Explorer 5.1.7 (the final release from 2001) kept it useful for surfing the web up until 2005, when it became too outdated/incompatible with many web sites.  Unfortunately, the demands of the internet and the need for a modern browser, as well as faster processing to digest it all, are what retired many older Macs from active duty.  So my (2) 6500s and (3) 6400s (same tower design) sit in storage.  There is one concern that I'll pass along: The motherboard has a 4.5-volt alkaline battery, that's a small, black plastic cube, secured in place by velcro.  If your 6500 has been disconnected from electricity for a long time, the battery will undoubtedly be dead.  Unlike the many Apple computers that used a small ½AA lithium battery (that I've never seen leak when completely dead), the 6500's battery can and usually does start leaking.  Because the motherboard sits vertically oriented on its side edge when installed, the leaking battery will drip alkaline solution down the board, corroding any components in it path.  I've seen motherboards ruined from this.  If you're going to give it away or sell it, you might want to pull the motherboard (remove the two machine screws on the rear I/O panel, next to the pull tabs).  Slide out the board and unplug the battery's small connector (has red & black wires), then lift up on the battery, while holding down the "toothed" velcro mount with something non-conductive, like a popsicle stick.  Once it's free, dispose of the battery.  If you're interested, a replacement can be purchased for about $5-$7 from battery specialty retailers - it's a Rayovac 870 or 871.  Even if you don't replace it, removing one that will eventually leak is a good idea, (hopefully) before any damage is done.

  • Disk write cache corruption on an external hard disk

Recently I purchased an external hard disk, to put all of my pictures of my baby due to space limitations on my internal laptop drive. Since my Canon camera 10 megapixel pictures take up a ton of space this was occurring at an alarming rate. My intention was also to back up to DVD but never got to it. This is both a comment and a question.
Now said baby, is getting really good at pulling cords etc. He managed to do this on the external drive firewire cable. As far as i know the drive was not in the process of actually writing. However, after a few minutes and trying to re-plug the drive the OS crashed with a Grey Screen of Death hardware error that tells you that you need to push the power button..
This apparently corrupted the drive's directory. Upon reboot the drive would not mount. Since there were time machine backups on the drive too Diskwarrior was not able to reconstruct the drive in the built in memory available on the computer. Time machine stores millions of files and Diskwarrior apparently wants to keep it all in memory at once. Since my computer has 2GB you would hope that would be enough but apparently not. So that failed. Other utilities seemed to be able to find the files but not restore the directory. I also took it to the apple store they were not able to recover it.
I have to say this is extremely distressing, and hard to believe that a simple accident like this could cost the loss of thousands of pictures. I did send it to a rescue company but that was expensive but I think apple needs to do something about this situation.
On Windows there is a way to disable the write cache for external drives. This is not available for Mac OS X. This would prevent this rather common occurrence of a plug accidentally becoming disengaged when the drive is not in the process of writing. This reduces the odds but I still think apple, in order to become clearly superior, needs a better solution.
I know Apple has experimented with ZFS would this not eliminate this possibility of this kind of disaster? Is this in Snow Leopard desktop? I know they are thinking this is a business customer focused technology but clearly if it can eliminate this kind of thing then I think it is extremely useful to their non server customers. Perhaps there are other ways of dealing with this issue but ZFS is designed to deal with these issues. HFS+ is extremely fragile to disk corruption.
I know my situation is not that uncommon and this is not the first time this has happened to me with an external drive. You would think I had learned. I hate to think of how many other people have had the same thing happen to them.

Disabling a write cache would not help you with the problem you are having. Besides the write cache is on the hard drive and operates independently of the operating system. But nothing can protect you from disconnected an external drive improperly, and if the drive is in the process of being written to, and the problem comes from directory corruption, not file corruption, as in the case you have described, disabling a write cache would not have made any difference.
For the future the magic word is: Backups.

  • How to stop hard disk noise on T61

    Hello everyone,
I have a T61 and everything works well except the hard disk which is constantly working. The result is a gentle noise on the bottom right
of laptop, always present. I used to have a T42 which when configured on XP to turn off hard disk (through power management), completly turned it off. I could then read or write long open files with a completly silent laptop (used tpfancontrol for controling fan, but this is not the problem here) until I save document or explcitly trigger the hdd (a completly silent laptop is a delight!).
The noise of the present T61 is bearable, a kind of a whisper, but once it stops it gets really better for your ears. My problem is that the power manager (set to turn off disk after 3 minutes) works, but something is constantly accessing the hard disk, which prevents the power manager to turn the HDD off. So, sometimes it happens that after 3 minutes the HDD stops, and a hsort time latter, say 15 seconds, it turns on again because "something" used the hdd.
The worse is that, most of the time, the hdd is triggered prior to the 3 minutes, so that it keeps always running!!
I can see this as the hdd green light flashes.
This is always the case, with or without internet, AC or DC.
I tried to stop some services (including indexing), but I stopped looking because of the number of services to check!
How do I know what service/program is being written on hdd at the specific time where I notice it, or makes it work, such that I can possibly disable it?
This is maybe a XP SP§ issue I think, but I think many here have noticed this constant activity on lenovo´ T61?
Any advice on possible strategy to find out who write what on the hdd or other solution?
I really plan to fix this problem because the T61 as it is now is really good (with however minor problems),
and i think many of us should benefit from this issue..

I would say it´s quite impossible on newer systems, to get the harddrive off for more than a few seconds.
Many user have tried that, but no one had success.
Another, but little dirty, possibility is, to take some piece of rubber or something and put it under the palm rest where the hdd is.
But beware, there is a little hole in hdd that have to be open to get some air.
This dirty trick will lower the permanent sound of your hdd.

  • How to connect Hard Disk with my MacBookPro

    Hello Everyone,
I have recently bought MacBookPro, But i am unable to transfer the data from MAcBook to Hard Disk... Can anyone please help??

How is the external drive formatted? If NTFS, the Windows New Technology File System (NTFS), then you need to format it the Mac format, Mac extended (Journaled), using Disk Utility.

  • How format the hard disk in single-user mode

Hi all, i would like to format the internal hard disk of my macbook pro 13'' through single-user mode. How can I do it, please?

Ok, to do that you need to hold c and boot off the 10.6 installer disk and second screen in under the Utilities Menu is Disk Utility.
You can then select the hard drive makers name (your "bare metal") and peform the wipe/format of the entire drive or a "partition" on that drive.
In the picture below there is only one partition, the Mac HD. In the picture above there are two partitions which both would show up under the hard drive makers name and both or either partition can be wiped in Disk Utility.
Use the Security Option to Zero your hard drive of all lingering data.
When you Quit Disk utiltiy, your back in the installer and can quit or install OS X.
Note: messing with Disk utility will erase all data on the drive, if there is something you need to recover better stop and ask!
If you don't see your internal boot drive in Disk Utility, the drive is dead.

  • How to find Hard Disk Serial

Hi, I have a program written using AIR for a client, and I dont want him to make millions of copies of my software, I would like to know exactly how many copies of my software he is using, so I figure, thats easy I will bound the software to the hardware, the hard disk serial.  Than one problem surfaced, how the heck do I find the hard disk serial using AS3?
Or is there a easier way for me to keep track of the software? the clients will install the software on machines that do not have internet access.  And the amount of software is not a big number, maybe 50 copies/machines per month.
    Thanks in advance.

Is it installed on an other system? If so you can see the serial number in the About Aperture window.
If not ant you wiped your disk and Aperture is no longer installed there is no way to find the serial number apart from the hard copy you had when you bought it.
See Pro Application Replacement Serial Numbers and give Apple a call. They are pretty good at working with you to try and recover the serial number.

You wont usually find this option in most MB BIOSES , as the only Option that SOME BIOSES Have is the Option to enable, disable SBA (Side Band Addressing) for the AGP Bus....In order for you to Disable or Enable the FW, You Must have the Option in your Vidio Drivers Controll Panel.....If you have a NVIDIA Card, you Must go to  http://www.guru3d.com  And Download the program "NVHardpage" and then Open the Program and you wil have the Choice to Enable these options and they will then appear in your Vidio driver CP >> "Activate "Coolbitts" (this is NVIDIAS Overclocking Utility) Activate "Harware Options", and then Activate "AGP Options" and finally Activate "Performance Options"........If you have a ATI Card then you must Download one of thier "Tweeking Utilities".......I will Post the Direct "Link" for NVHardpage in a Minute, just say yes to the Lic. • DV9925nr - How to Backup Hard Disk Drive After S.M.A.R.T. Drive Failure Message

I purchased a DV9925nr laptop from Bestbuy about 13 months ago. Six months ago it started having the sporadic and randomly abrubt shutdown problem that so many others seem to be having.
Two days ago it developed a new problem:
I left my laptop on for a few minutes and when I returned, it was to a black screen with this message: "SMART Drive failure predicted on Hard Disk 4. WDC WD2500BEVS - 60UST0-(S1); warning: Immediately backup your data and replace your hard disk drive. A failure may be imminent. Press F1 to continue."
    My question:
We have a network with two laptops and a desktop computer. There is plenty of hard drive space on the desktop system. My father has the same exact laptop model as mine. Can I put my hard disk drive into his second disk drive bay so that I can backup my files over the network to my desktop system? How would the laptop know which hard drive to boot from since they both have the same operating system on them (I am not familiar with SATA drives)?
I hope I didn't buy a lemon. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Are you trying to do this while booted from the OS or from the install Disk? If your booted into the OS then the repair option shouldn't be click-able. Beyond that, there might be some 3rd party software that could force a reformat and/or erase. I did try to find you something but didn't come across anything specific to what your trying to do. You probably already know this, but the purpose of S.M.A.R.T. is it acts as an early warning indicator. This means the drive is no longer dependable and may fail without warning in the near future, resulting in losing all data. With that being said, I've used a hard drive that S.M.A.R.T. indicated was failing for 3+ years without a hick-up. I don't use it for anything imported though. When I have more time and if I come across anything that might get the job down, I will add to this posting. The worst case scenario is that there is no way to reformat and/or erase the drive due to the state it's in. At that point, the only thing left to do is recycling the drive.

  • How to prevent hard disks from sleeping

    Hello
I have recently installed a SSD for system drive in my machine, and now realise what a bottle neck the old, standard hard disk had been. Booting is now extremely fast, as is opening applications. This speed has alerted me to another problem. My hard disks keep falling asleep, which slows down operantion of the machine significantly. For instance, to log into this forum, I used 1Password. When selecting the log in menu item from 1Password, there was several seconds delay before one of the hard disk (I have four inside the machine, one external Drobo, and one external eSata drive) came alive. When it had, Safari could take me into the site. There constant delays like this when I use Safari, for example. These delays are very frustrating, so I want to keep all my disks awake constantly.
    Thing tried so far:
The worst problem was the Drobo, because it has three disks inside that wake up one after the other, a very slow process, and the Drobo is slow in itself. So I installed a little script that does a touch command every five minutes, to prevent the Drobo from sleeping. It seems this has helped. But the other disks keep falling asleep all the time. I have set Cocktail to prevent all disks from sleeping - no effect. The Energy Computer Sleep setting is set to Never.
Any ideas will be much appreciated. This sleep issue keeps bugging my all day long.

In the Energy Saver system pref, are any of the boxes checked?
If it were me, I guess I'd try clicking the 'restore defaults' button in Energy Saver, restart the computer, and then go back into the Energy Saver and set the computer sleep to either 3 hours or never, and uncheck the 'put hard disks to sleep when possible' box. You might try 3 hours instead of never and see if that makes a difference.
