How to disable read receipts

I have just realized that my iPhone responds to read receipt requests by happily confirming when I've opened the message. I find that both a privacy invasion and a security issue, as well as something that contributes to spam increase. Is there a way to turn it off?

This is a more serious issue because any junk mail using randomly generated e mail addresses is automatically getting confirmation that it has chanced upon a valid address.  This single issue has stopped me ordering over 1000 iphones for my company.

Actually, it appears that you can request receipts if you're willing to use Terminal to add headers.

  • Disable read receipts on iPhone 4 IOS 4.1

I have some clients who request read receipts when sending me emails and although i have turned the automatic response off from Outlook client when i open the mail on my iPhone it will automatically send a notification to the user. I understand that the outlook configuration has no bearing on the iPhone behaviour but i cannot see the option to disable this function when viewing new emails from the handset?
Is this possible via the native email client or could anyone recommend a 3rd party app which will allow push functionality when connecting to a Microsoft exchange server?
    Thanks Chris

There is no such option available on the iPhone and no 3rd party app can provide this option since no 3rd party app has access to private iPhone APIs and such an option would require that.
Push access for received messages is supported with an Exchange account accessed via ActiveSync. Microsoft's ActiveSync protocol is what allows/provides for this which Apple has licensed from Microsoft for use with the iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, and with the Mail.app, Address Book, and iCal on a Mac running Snow Leopard - Apple's current OS X version.

You can use 3rd party services to use read receipts with Gmail. Companies like ContactMonkey (www.contactmonkey.com) and Spypig offer email tracking for Gmail and Outlook. They're both pretty easy to use.
    Happy tracking!

  • How to do read receipts

I can find ways to do for mac os 10.3 and so on, but not on 10.4. I am using 10.4.6 and really need to have a way of having read receipts to work. I am on about getting them not sending them back to others emails. I want to mark emails to have read receipts - is this possible in mail?

There is a way to convince Mail in Tiger to always request a delivery notification (if the recipients' mail client supports that feature and the recipient has not turned them off)
Note: the following relies no undocumented features of Mail and I don't take any responsability if things break for you...
    • Quit Mail
    • Open Terminal (/Applications/Utilities/)
    • Enter the folowoing text (make sure to keep all quotes exactly as is!)
    defaults write com.apple.mail UserHeaders '{"Disposition-Notification-To"="your@address";}'
(of course, using your correct email address instead of "your@address")
    • All future messages sent with Mail will now include the Disposition-Notification-To header which is the one asking for a return receipt.
If you wish to turn off this feature in the future, type the following in the Terminal:
    defaults delete com.apple.mail UserHeaders

  • How to Request Read Receipts in Mac OS X Mail

    Hi
Would like to be able to know when the people I send email to actual read that email I send them. Is it possible to setup a option in mail so you get a receipt from the person who reads your email.
    Thanks

Mail doesn't support read receipts. But you can do an "all or nothing" deal using Terminal:

  • How to Disable Reading List?

My Reading List keeps popping up when I open safari, and I can't get rid of it. How do I close it?

How does this happen? It happens because you accidently hit the "command", "shift" and "L" keys which is the keyboard shortcut for reading [L]ist. Hit those three keys again and the drawer will close.
There are other ways to do this, namely go to "Safari" drop down in the menu bar, select "Preferences..."
In the preferences panel select the first tab, "Bookmarks". The top checkbox on the Bookmarks panel is the one to include the "Reading List" symbol (eyeglasses) on the bookmarks bar (far left end by default). Check that box and then click on the eyeglasses in the bookmarks bar to make it disappear.
Alternate way 2 is to click on the "View" tab in the Safari menu tab and select "Hide Reading List".

How can I change settings to stop my mobile from sending read receipts? I’ve turned it off in outlook (as far as I know), but when using my mobile this does not seem to work. Using intellisync and an E65.

I logged into my Office 365 Outlook Web Access/Mail and disabled read receipts too, but believe another poster here commented that iOS devices are ignoring and/or by-passing the setting.
I'll have to see what it does for the Mail app on OS X.
But from what I've read in these forums related to the issue, if the mail.app doesn't support read receipts (which I realize is not a common standard), then why does it send a read receipt when you open/view an e-mail?  That doesn't make any sense.
I've always disabled read receipts.  I don't let email rule my day.  Just because I opened an email doesn't mean I read it and should reply to it in a certain time frame.  Your sense of urgency doesn't dictate a priority on my end.
In today's world, senders expect immediate responses, just like they do with text messages.  That is ludicrous.
Thanks for letting me ramble.  Sure wish there could be a setting or hack for OS X (at the terminal level) to disable this very annoying 'feature'.

  • Read Receipt pop-up for email going out of CRM

    Hi Ronit
Basis can enable read receipts for email sent out of the ERMS system:
Go to SCOT. From menu select Settings > Confirmation of Receipt , here you have option to enable or disable read receipt.

  • Permit internal Read Receipts but prevent them from exiting organisation

    http://blogs.technet.com/b/exchange/archive/2011/02/23/3412028.aspx
Above article explains how to delete Read Receipts in Exchange altogether.
Can I use Exchange to allow Read Receipts between internal users within the organisation but prevent read receipts from being sent to external mail addresses? Case in point is to prevent spammers from confirming live addresses within the organisation.
So we want to know if anyone has read our emails; we want to know if we've read each others emails and if the outside world has read our emails but we don't want the outside world to know whether we've read their emails.
I'm getting the impression that the functionality supported in Exchange means that you can only configure a rule like this on a separate gateway (front end?) if you want only external affected and you cannot specify the direction (i.e. allow incoming read
receipts but delete outgoing read receipts).

    Hi,
From your description, you want to prevent the external users from receiving the read receipts of internal users.
You can create the following transport rule to achieve it. (Note: Because we use the "Read" as subject key word, it will delete the messages whose subject contain "read", please pay attention to use it.)
What's more, I have a test in my lab. If I choose "Read:" as subject key word, the transport doesn't work. When I choose "Read" as subject key word, it works.
Besides, to force an immediate update of transport rule, you can stop and start the Microsoft Exchange Transport service.
    Hope it helps.
If you need further assistance, please feel free to let me know.
    Best regards,
