How to disable smb network drive failure to connect warning

Hey,
we have a number of users using os x machines to connect on our domain, all of them have network drives configured via connect to server option smb://etc/etc
When the user is docked into the network they login just fine, obviously if they are no on the network the drive will not connect and during login they get a pop up saying connection to server failed etc etc.
Is there a way to disable this pop up ? had a number of cases this message will pop up and cause issues with login or just fail.
I do not want to demap it , I just want the message to go away as these users are highly mobile, on off the network multiple times a day.
Or is there a better way to map this drive/server ?
Thanks
GV

Thanks, but why would backuping a USB drive work and not a network drive ? I don't see much difference but maybe I'm missing something.
Is there a plan to implement that feature ? I mean Apple is offering the capability of plugging external drives into the time capsule and airport extreme, so why aren't these included in the overall scheme of backing up ? Sounds weird to me.
Also, could you please point some "hack out there" cause I didn't find any.
Thanks!

  • Problems copying to SMB network drive

In glancing at the forum posts, I see that most people are having problems with SMB network drives. I thought I would post my experiences and see if they might lend some insight into correcting the issues.
I recently purchased a Coolmax CN-350 NAS, which works as both a SMB and FTP server. It shows up on my list of Shared drives just fine in the sidebar, and I can connect to it just fine through the finder. However, copying to the drive produces a "The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “About Stacks.pdf” can’t be read or written.(Error code -36)" error. The item I copy (text file, movie, pdf, etc) shows up on the drive anyway, but it is empty. Nothing new so far, based on what I've read in the forums. I tried copying some files to the NAS drive via FTP and they seemed to transfer just fine. I also can copy files to the NAS via SMB using muCommander. Saving to the NAS from some applications that I've tried so far seems to work (TextWrangler, Pages, Preview) though not from others (QuickTime Player, Illustrator CS3, iTunes). I can't double-click to open the files I created, or moved to the NAS via FTP, but in all cases I've tried so far (movies, pdfs, text files) I can open them from within the application.
Copying from the NAS seems to work without any issues. Files copied over to the NAS via FTP will copy back to the Mac without any errors, and the copied files will open just fine when I double-click them on the Mac, with no information lost.
I've tried some of the solutions & workarounds proposed in the forums here (numerical passwords, logging into the directory directly rather than just attach the drive directly, etc) but from what I'm reading around here, the problem seems to be with the Finder and how it sees the SMB drive. As a side note, when I checked Console, the message it gave for when I tried to use the Finder to copy files to the NAS, it gave the following message:
"10/30/09 9:45:05 AM kernel smb_maperr32: no direct map for 32 bit server error (0xc0000161)"
I'm hoping that this might help someone more clever than I, or perhaps even someone working on 10.6.2 so that this issue can be resolved in the next update. I'd like to think that this isn't some sort of subtle sabotage on Apple's part to try and encourage people to buy Time Capsules; they are cool of course, but I really can't afford one just to make NAS easier. Hope someone can make use of this.

Pretty much same story here. After upgrading to Snow Leopard I could copy things from the SMB drive to my local drive, but not open them by double-clicking.
I also got the -36 error code when I tried to copy files from my local drive to the SMB drive. BUT until about a week ago, I was able to copy the files via the terminal but that stopped working this weekend, which was kind of strange.
I installed the .2 update tonight hoping that would fix it but it didn't. I looked in the console and spotted the SMB error. Searched on Google and this was one of just four results! But I did search for the whole log entry.
Anyway Joseph, if you do find a solution, please post it here and I promise to do the same.
    Good luck!

  • Adding a local site to Dreamweaver CC that is through a mapped network drive breaks ALL connections

I am using Dreamweaver CC on Windows 8 on a machine that is hooked up to a local network. My site files are stored on another drive on that network and I am mapped to that drive. I have always been able to open in individual file from that drive in Dreamweaver. But I noticed that with one site I am working on, Dreamweaver would hang trying to make minor revisions to the PHP code. It was suggested to me to add the whole folder as a local site in Dreamweaver, so I did. At first I thought it was moving along much better -- no hanging while I was typing code. Then suddenly I realized I could not save the files. I was no longer connected to the drive I was working on. Even outside of Dreamweaver, I was unable to access the drive. I thought it was a network issue. I rebooted the computer and opened a Windows Explorer folder and was able to access the drive. Then I opened Dreamweaver again and the connection was lost.
To test my theory, I rebooted again, accessed the drive, waited a little while, accessed the drive, then opened Dreamweaver and it was lost. I tried this several times, each with the same result.
Then I went into Dreamweaver, removed the site from Dreamweaver and rebooted. I accessed the drive, opened Dreamweaver, and voila... I could still access the drive. So I tried adding the site back to Dreamweaver and I cannot access the drive after opening Dreamweaver again.
Without having the site in Dreamweaver, the files/Dreamweaver hangs EVERY TIME I TYPE CODE. Adding a site on a mapped local network drive BREAKS MY CONNECTION and disables my ability to work on the files. Is there a reason for this and more importantly, is there a fix? It seems like a very specific but illogical problem.
My next step is to find and install my old Homesite 4.5.
Thanks in advance for any useful advice!

I surely did not knowing change anything within the software!
I just tried adding another site. It seems like it is setting it up and reading the files but then at the end (apparently just as the connection breaks), it gives me these errors:
    Cannot create [SITE NAME].
    and
The local root folder, [FOLDER NAME], does not exist. Please select a new local root folder by clicking the Manage Sites button.
(I changed the out the actual site name and folder name above.)
I believe these were the same errors I got with the other site. At the time I was pushing a deadline and was too frantic to write it down.
Not that I think it has any relevance, but both sites are Wordpress sites.
Maybe what I should try next is mapping a different drive and trying to set up a site from there?
For that error you want you can try mapping it but it seems your sites root is just not defined... what DW is telling you is it could not find the specified folder when its trying to establish the new site. You might want to make sure your folder is there and all the spelling is correct, when making sure go your your Site Manager and make sure your root site is in your network drive.

  • How to index a network drive so spotlight can search there as well

Now i like the speed of the search for Indexed drives but it is useless on my network if i am looking for a special document which is backup on our network spotlight does not find one single document any other search options or tool available.

I found this page that informs you how to activate indexing on network drives. However this was written during the Tiger days so I'm not sure if this applies any more. Someone in the comments noted that indexing of network drives for spotlight was disabled permanently in Leopard so I'm not sure if that's changed for Snow Leopard.

  • SMB Network Drive not connecting

I have an SMB NAS drive that connected fine in 10.4. However, with 10.5, on my MacBook Pro I can connect to it and can see the 2 volumes on it but can't do anything with them, and can't disconnect from it once connected. On an iMac G5 also upgraded to 10.5, it starts to connect and then locks up. I can connect to the NAS with FTP with no problem but not through sharing.

Ok, I got it working at 3am last night, and I'm embarrassed to say how. Case sensitivity. My logins differ by the case of the first letter, so I used the syntax to add that and it worked. And I'd swear I did that already at some point, and/or when using the full mount syntax, so I don't know.
The thing that now ticks me off is, why did this all work fine in Tiger??? I have a theory which I won't get to explore until after work - perhaps the Keychain corrupted? I wonder since whenever I try mounting via the go menu (that still doesn't work, by the way), it prefilled my long name as the user. Now, logically, when I first connected months ago, I would have added the capitalized username in that dialog the first time and been done, which is why I took it for granted that it just would work. So now I'm wondering if no matter what I type, it's ignoring me and trying to log in with my long name from the go menu or the network thing in the finder. There have been some rumblings about some people's Keychains getting borked a bit, so maybe...
Strm, since you asked specifically, I was using (I hope this is right, I'm not on the Mac right now) mount_smbfs //User@machine/sharename /Volumes/whatever
If I'm wrong, the @ is a colon. It's annoying that there are all these subtle differences in syntax Also, when I trashed the volume in the UI, it seemed to automatically delete the directory I mounted to, so you may have to keep recreating it. Anyhow, that brings up something else interesting (or not)...I'm not having the IP problem...I can refer to my PC by it's network name in the command line no problem. I think that may be further evidence that my problems, at least, aren't in the smb setup per se, but in the Finder interaction.

  • How do I get network drives to show in left panel of media browser

Okay, I'm new to audition.  When I start Audition's media browser, only the local HDD's are shown.  If I OPEN FILE, I can navigate to find tyhe network drive and Audition will open the file.  Also the network drives show in Windows Explorer.  I searched the FAQs and the help file, but maybe I'm not using the "magic words"  So, how to I get these network drives to appear?
Windows 7 64 bit home premium
home built 3.67 gb Intel Quad core, 12 GB RAM, Several local HDDs
    Audition CS6
    Thank you

I'm not sure this is correct.  I have mapped a NAS to drive "Z" and mapped a drive on my video editing desktop to drive "Y."  These both show up in the left panel of the media browser for Premiere and Photoshop as the share names  "MYDOCS" and "BAAAA,"  as well as in Windows Explorer.  But not in Audition. Only the local drives are shown in Audition's media browser.
I can open a file in audition by using BROWSE by clicking on "MYDOCS" or "BAAAA" as they appear in the Windows Explorer file dialong and then navigating on those drives to the desired files.
What am I missing?  Do others have their network drives show in the left panel of Audition's media browser?

  • Upgrading to iPhoto 11 with a library on an external SMB network drive.

I currently have about 15000 photos on an SMB network HDD and would like to upgrade to to iPhoto 11. Although the photo's are on the external drive which is backed up, the photos are also backed up to a time capsule. Due to the size of the file and having multiple computers accessing the file I would prefer to keep the photos on an external drive.
    1. Can I continue to keep the library on the external drive ( I believe not)
    2. If I have to move the library to a MAC formatted drive, what is the safest and easiest way to do this?

The drive has to be formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
Are you running a Managed or a Referenced Library?
A Managed Library, is the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing. The files are then stored in the Library package
A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing because you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced. The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.
Moving a Managed Library is easy:
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from the current location to the Mac OS Extended (Journaled) Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the other one to free up space.

  • How to disconnect a network drive filtered to a computer group

I have a Group of computers that needs to get a specific network drive disconnected. There is a user setting for this but the problem is when i need to filter this against a computer Group. If i have user settings i need to filter against users/user Groups.

You can target a computer group in user GPOs. You cannot security filter
for computer groups in user GPOs.

Did you map these drives in a startup script in system context? Or are
these drives mapped to users logging on to these computers?

  • How do I search network drives with Snow Leopard?

I cannot find a way to search available network drives using either Spotlight or the Find command.  This is a simple action in Windoze.  How do I do it in Snow Leopard (10.6.8)?

I finally found a partial answer at:  http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1568
The rest of the story is that you have to change the back slashes in the Windows address to forward slashes in a Mac browser address field to get to the folder.  NOTE that the Finder's Go command is useless for such connections.

  • Questions about AFP and SMB network drives

Is there a major speed difference between the two? At my school I am given network drive space, and my drive seems accessibly via afp:// and not via SMB.
I transferred a 30MB file once and afp:// transferred at about 1 MB a second. This seemed about as fast as when I used OS 9 and connected to afp:// servers.
Also can one access a afp:// drive on a Windows 98 computer without third party software (PC MacLan)? The It director has been trying to help my Windows 98 laptop also gain access to my drive, but everything he has told me to try has failed. Perhaps because Windows 98 cant connect with Appletalk over TCP/IP servers.
    Thanks for the help.

I am on a T1 and using the ibooks network card.
    Back in 2005 I was on a Performa 6360 and also used a network card (100 base T) on a T1.
Its strange why the ibook would be no faster than the performa for transferring files.
So can Windows 98 connect to afp:// servers?

  • Network drives failure

I apparently made the serious error of buying a network drive-- and while I was able to load my iTunes files onto it, suddenly the folder disappeared and I cannot find ANY method of finding it and removing it so I can salvage my files. The drive maker simply repeats the same do this, do that, do this, do that-- even if I have just done it-- and seem to have no interest beyond having taken my money for 4tb worth of drive.
Does anyone know of a file recovery that works 10.6 to network drive?
I did buy another brand of Firewire 4tb drive, and that ia a brand I feel I can trust-- not like the first brand.

The drive is network only, supposedly was mac compatible, ready to use, and allowed a week's worth of doing things-- and then the file just vanished. The other file folder on it is still there, just the iTunes folder went away, and this happened while I was getting things loaded, so there are some unduplicated songs I need to salvage.
The whole idea of getting a 4tb raid 1 was to avoid having a loss of data, not having it all vanish.

I have a macbook pro, iMac and Time Capsule.  I exported my images from macbook to Time Capsule.  A few of these images I would like to import into apeture on my iMac.  What is the best way to get images from a networked drive to import into a new project on apeture 3?  Any help is appreciated.  Thank you,

Is it a few images or complete folders?
If it is a few images go to File->Import->Files. Select the drive and folder where the images are and import them.
If it is whole folders of images go to File->Import->Folders as Projects.
Note in both cases the network drive needs to be attached to the Mac before you will see it in Aperture. So open Finder and select he network drive and then select a folder on the drive. You should see it in Aperture after that.
