How to disable Top sites icon in Favorites bar?

I have upgraded to Mavericks and there are two issues that make me regret the move.  The first is small sounding but it makes me so angry I can't see straigh.  In a Google sort of way, the new version of Safari foists upon me that miserable button - the top sites icon - as if to say "haa haa ... we know what is good for you".  I want it gone!  It used to be an option you could uncheck in the preferences ... but unless I'm missing something (I sure hope so!) Apple decided we should not have the option.  Please tell me there is some way to get rid of the icon ... and better yet to disable somehow the whole top sites thing.  I despise it, and I despise that someone tells me what I must have and how to work.
The second thing is the bookmark sidebar.  I've always like how it works in safari.  Now for some reason, as oposed to before, when you have the side bar slide into place so that you can select the bookmark - it stays there!  Why?  I want it to disapear after I click on a bookmark as it always has.  I don't want to click again each time to make it go away.  Is there a way to bring back the old behavior?  This was in the beta of mavericks and I was not going to upgrade over the "feature".  In the demo however I caught that a presenter clicked ... and the bar slid away, the way I would like it to.  Now that I have mavericks ... it does not  work as in the demo on stage.
So ... anyone ... is there a way for me to fix these two irritations?
I'm going to wait a month or so to see how Mavericks direction develops.  I've always disliked Chrome because I don't trust they security and their proclivity towards tracking.  I haven't cared for Firefox much neither ... mostly due to the way they render fonts.  I will not use Safari if I can't change both of these features ... so I guess (because I suspect it is a case where apple knows what is good for me) that I won't be able to set up safari to not annoy me ... so my last questions is a recomendation for a replacement browser.  What are your favorite browsers aside from Safari?
Thanks.

Well after a few more days with Mavericks I have to say I'm fairly impressed with it.  Both laptops seem to have better battery life, and ... is it my imagination ... but they seem faster too?  Not bad.
On the Safari problem I have, so far, made no headway, so I would be grateful for anyone who can come up with an answer.  Perhaps  the drawer sliding out and then back after you click your bookmark has a command line solution?  I wonder how to investigate that?
As slick as Safari is (It has long been my favorite browser) I've been looking for a replacement.  I won't consider Crome because of the afforementioned Google practice of monetizing "us' and our data.  I don't  trust em!
I dowloaded Opera ... and found that they have the same ideas in spades, about Top sites, that Apple seems to be adopting. What a shame ... and a no-go.
Then I started a trial with iCab.  Now that is one nice browser!  First impression are very possitive but there is the same top sites icon sitting there, with no obvious way to zap it.  WHAT is going on ... does everyone havet to jump on the same (often hated) feature? I sent an email to the developer, expecting little but hoping just a bit anyways.  Guess what?  About forty five minutes later I received a reply.  Wow, now that is nice!
My first impressions of iCab are very positive.  I, however have the
same problem.  There is a top sites right in the favorites bar.  Can
this be disabled?  I have not yet found a way to do this.
You can turn off this icon in iCab. Please enter "settings:" (without the
quote characters, but including the colon) in the URL field and hit the
"return" key. This will open some additional settings where you can configure
some more stuff. In the section "favorites toolbar" there's a setting to
show or hide the TopTen icon in the favorites toolbar. Just switch this
option off and click on the "Save Settings" button.

..... So problem avoided.  I'm going to spend the twenty dollars to register iCab even  though one does not really need to.  With responsiveness like this ... well, I want to keep it.
So that is my progress up until now.  Not much on the original quest ... if you count nothing+hope as merely "not much".  Still hoping.  But having choices such as iCab and probably others ... sure did make me less grumpy.
I know I should perhaps just chill out. Life would sure be a bit easier if I had it in me to not care about these little details, I know.  Having it perfect, perfectly elegant and perfectly customizable - that's tough.
On the other hand.  This is Apple. Isn't it?
Cheers!

I wish to remove "Show sidebar" and "Show Top Sites" from the Favorites Bar in Safari 7.0. How may I do so?

I aggree It's rather annoying that you can't remove these features when like me you never use them, however by far the most annoying part of this is that when you go into 'Customize Toolbar' you can actually add yet a second 'Show Top Sites' feature to the toolbar !! Even those people who actually want to use this feature don't require two of them. For crying-out-loud come on Apple, this has to be a joke right?!?

  • Just downloaded 5.0 version of Firefox..when I click on my TOP SITE Icon my screen comes up "blank and black" how do I get my top sites back?

You can click on the TOP SITE ICON but none of the sites show up...only a black screen

I have the shortcuts on my browser to the sites that I go to frequently. It's when I press those buttons (which have always worked before and I checked their URLs) it takes me to the Yahoo Page not Found page. But then when I click the shortcut button again, it usually works.

    Dear Skypers,

Please bring back the option to disable the Skype icon on Android status bar. This is the main reason I uninstall Skype. :/
Kudos to the team, the apps is really smooth and fluid to use. Would be nice if you guys are following the Android Design Principles and using Google Cloud Messaging for push notification to improve User Experience and battery life.

Long click on this notification a sub menu having field "App info" would appear goto App Info. You can goto there by "Manage Apps">"Skype" also.
Uncheck Option "Show Notifications" A dialog will open. Don't worry about notifications for now just click OK. Now the notification icon skype has also been removed.
Now simply check "Show notification again". After doing this you would get notifications but skype icon would not be shown in the status bar anymore.
Issue: this is just a trick you need to repeat this every time sign out and sign in again. Mostly you don't do that so no need to worry.

  • Missing top sites icon

    Hi-
I seem to be missing the option to add the top sites icon. I looked in the customize tool bar box, and the icon does not exist to drag onto the toolbar. The Safari help files shows it should be there. In short I do not have an icon, and I do not have cover flow option or top sites option- no thumbnails at all. I am using Safari 4.0.4 (531/21/10) - I guess it could be my graphic cards, but if that is so, why would the icon be missing also? Is Safari that smart? Thanx for you help.

    HI,
I guess it could be my graphic cards
Check here to make sure your graphics card meets the requirements for TopSites.

I was able to control some windows thru a unix window manager like I would for Motif (the use the window name of AWTapp or AWTdialog are recognized when doing xwininfo) That is all I can seem to get. Nothing changes this.
    Does anyone know how?
Anyway. mwmDecorations and mwmFunctions settings appear to allow setting of some of the windows. But I need control 100%of the time.
I need to disable the CLOSE button in all java windows or find a way that the window manager event can get back to the java application. Currently it is not recognized.
In some windows I need other items disabled such as SIZE & MAXIMIZE.

  • Will we ever be able to disable top sites?

Hi, will we ever be able to disable top sites on Firefox for Android? This is an amazingly huge gaping privacy hole and a major annoyance. I love your products, I love your organization. But this is so against the whole philosophy of open source and the ability of the user to control their own technology. Until this is fixed I will not be able to use your browser. Looks like it's Dolphin Browser for me.

This is a suggested feature by many, expect it to be in a future version of firefox.

  • Disable all site icons (favicons)?

Is there any way to disable all site icons (favicons) in Safari 3.02?
    Thanks for any help.

Yes, I have them switched off as, IMO, they are a complete waste of space and memory!
If you download the free utility Tinkertool:
    http://www.bresink.com/osx/TinkerTool.html
one of its many really useful settings (one of the others is to activate the Debug menu in Safari) provides a checkbox 'Disable database of website icons', which is what you want.

I don't use Safari much, but try this as I recall...
Click the Book icon in the Favorites/Bookmarks bar.

How do I modify entries in the favorites bar in Safari?

    Safari 6/7
Click "Bookmarks" menu in the Safari menubar.
    Click "Edit Bookmarks"
    Select "Favorites Bar".
You can click the disclosure triangle beside folder to expand it.
    Then edit those entries.

  • How to get search sites icons on desk top, not firefox's

When putting desktop shortcut I get all firefox icons instead of search sites icon. how do I change it?

If you drag a link or favicon on the left end of the location bar onto the desktop to create an internet shortcut then that shortcut gets the icon of the default browser.
If you want a different icon (favicon) then you have to assign that icon yourself to the desktop shortcut (right-click: Properties).
You can usually get the favicon if you append "favicon.ico" to the main domain of a website (e.g. http://www.mozilla.com/favicon.ico ) to display the favicon in a tab and save that image to a folder or see if you can find it in "Tools > Page Info > Media".

  • Top Sites Icons

I'm using IOS 7 on my iPad mini Retina. I finally figured out how to add more top sites to the already 4 that are included on Safari's home page.
But when I bookmark a lesser known site to my favourites the icon that shows on the Safari homepage is a greyed out compass image with the name of the website underneath. How do I get an actual nicer image like it shows automatically for eBay Google etc?

    Hi,
Empty the Safari cache more often, either from the menu bar, Safari / Empty Cache or Option + Command + E on your keyboard.
Check Safari / Preferences - Extensions. If you have any installed, turn that off. Try TopSites.
