How to disable WMC automatic update

Windows Media Center does update itself via Internet, regardless of the Windows Update configuration.
How can I disable this?

So, you're never, ever going to use Windows Update?
You do realize that this is how you get updates for the operating system (Windows itself), as well as any other MS software that you have installed, yes?
Honestly, not a good idea.
Perhaps you could say what you've observed to occur, so that we might be able to offer a more proper resolution (read:  fix why this isn't working for you?)
The earlier suggestion should work.  I've verified it myself.
On my laptop (which has no tuners; therefore, it doesn't need a Guide to go with them), I unchecked that box, oh, well before I wrote that post in March 2009.  Never since have I seen the 'downloading Guide data' icon pop up in my
systray, never has the laptop woken itself to run a Guide update.

Chris

  • How to disable the automatic conversion from JPEG to TIFF?

    I am using Keynote '09 and Safari 4 on OS X 10.6.8, and I often want to drag and drop a JPEG image from Safari to my slides. I would like to keep the image format as is, but Keynote automatically converts the image format from JPEG to TIFF, so the .key file size becomes large.
    Does anyone know how to disable this automatic conversion? Any idea? I know that I can use the original format if I save the JPEG image at a temporary location, such as ~/Desktop. But I would prefer simpler way. Drag and drop is the best.

    Indeed, having the same problem here.  A simple PPT file that was 1 MB ballons often to more than 10 x the size as a KEY file.  If you rename to zip and open, one notices lots of completely useless "PLACEHOLDER" and background files that occupy several MB in total, plus some small JPGs have been converted to very large PNGs.  This is truly annoying.
    A similar lack of "file size economy" is present in all applications apple produces for the ipad/iphone.  Images I uplodaded to the photo app become very large (often 10 x bigger).  WTH apple?  Be more economical!  Even my 64 GB ipad2 is starting to feel small with your waste.

  • How to disable software auto update from iPad

    I was trying to download my favorite programs and iOS 7, but first I have to stop software auto update, how will I do this?

    The actuall problem I'm trying to fix is the following error:
    <pre>
    Another app is currently holding the yum lock; waiting for it to exit...
    The other application is: PackageKit
    Memory : 45 M RSS (357 MB VSZ)
    Started: Tue Jul 10 09:27:04 2012 - 04:09 ago
    State : Sleeping, pid: 2317
    </pre>
    The above error can happen if you have an active Gnome session and e.g. connect as root using ssh session and try to use yum.
    I may have found a way now to disable the automatic system updates, however, I don't know if this is the proper solution since I cannot find any information about it.
    I modified */etc/PackageKit/PackageKit.conf* and changed:
    <pre>
    DefaultBackend=yum -> DefaultBackend=nobackend
    </pre>
    It requires a re-login of your Gnome X session to take affect.
    Then Administration/Software update does no longer scan for updates, and apparently no longer lock yum at the system level. At least the problem seems to be fixed globally that way.
    I will mark this question as answered, but any ideas are still welcome.
    Thanks!

  • Disabling QT automatic update

    Does anyone know how to turn off the automatic updates for QT? I have a form factor PC that functions to display digital signage in a retail environment; this PC obviously cannot have update popup windows displaying on it, especially with an 'always-on-top' property. I could be missing something obvious, if so, I apologize, but I did not notice a setting that I could change. Many thanks in advance from a first-time poster to this forum.

    I have done this on my computer and it doesn't work. QuickTime popped up a window this evening asking me to download and install some "security update" for QuickTime.
    I don't want automatic updates ever, regardless of how important Apple thinks the update is. How do I disable them completely?

  • Why do have to disable Yahoo automatic updates all the time?

    I used to be able to open Firefox, and then open my Yahoo mail account without having to go through the additional step of disabling automatic updates. How can I permanently disable automatic updates, so I don't have to do it every time?

    If you are using home sharing then yes. Only photos used for the screensaver are temporarily cached, nothing else is stored. There is no need to restore the unit in order to view photos from your computer's library.

  • Can I interrupt an automatic update to iPhoto? If so, how? And how can I stop automatic updates? This current update has been running for over 4 hours now. I have a MacBook Pro w/OSX 10.9.1

    Can I interrupt an automatic update to iPhoto? Also, how can I turn OFF  automatic updates?

    as Larry said, just a caution about the App Store Preferences:
    If you do not want your software to update automatically, disable "Install app updates".  But better not disable the option "Install system data files and security updates".  If there are security updates available, it is important to get them installed asap.

  • How to disable yum auto-update in OL6

    Hello,
    What is the correct procedure to disable yum auto-updates?
    The "yum-updatesd" daemon that existed in OL 5 does no longer exist in OL 6.
    I found out that the "PackageKit Update Applet" seems to be responsible for running the auto-update. It can be enabled or disabled in the new Preferences/Startup Applications control panel. There is also the "gpk-prefs" control panel to set the update interval to "never". However, both control panels work on a per-user/login basis and cannot be used to disable yum auto-update system-wide.
    Finally I found /etc/PackageKit/PackageKit.conf, which has a DefaultBackend parameter, but I don't know what I should put there.
    Is there here a way, to disable the yum auto-update system-wide without uninstalling PackageKit?
    I already checked the documentation at http://docs.redhat.com/docs/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux/6/html/Deployment_Guide/ch-PackageKit.html but it was not helpful.
    Thanks!

  • HT4922 How do I stop automatic updates of Microsoft Silverlight on MacBook?

    Microsoft Silverlight keeps trying to update on my computer and is really slowing it down.  How do I stop these pop up boxes for automatic updates?

    Do you actually need it? Not many websites have Silverlight content, Netflix being perhaps the most notable exception. The best way to stop the updates would be to get rid of it.

  • How do I stop automatic updates of my apps??

    I am sooooo angry. When I leave updates untouched it is because I do NOT want to update that app! Most recently I DID NOT want to update iBook. I'd read how ugly it was and I wanted to keep my existing version. But today, I noted that it had been automatically updated and guess what it is every bit as ugly as reported. I am fuming. Surely Apple will allow me to have SOME control over my own device?!
    Any help in stopping automatic updates on my iPad apps is much appreciated!

    First of all, note that apps are automatically updated only in iOS 7.
    If you are running iOS 7, open Settings > iTunes & App Store, and turn off "Updates" under "Automatic Downloads"

  • 10.1.3: How to disable ANOYING automatic search for updates?

    We are experiencing very anoying (meant-to-be-a-feature) performance problems when JDev is automatically looking for updates. It happens periodically (not sure... maybe every 30 min?). Is there a way to disable this?? Please please help.

    The automatic Check for Updates only occurs on startup of JDev. Apart from that, the only reason JDev would check for updates is if you manuall select Tools > Check for Updates. So, it's likely the that periodic "check" that you see is coming from somewhere else. Have you installed any extensions?
    The J-Dide.cfu.autoskip=true would be set as a command line argument when running the product, as in:
    jdevw.exe -J-Dide.cfu.autoskip=true
    -- Brian

  • How to disable check for updates??

    I ve to package a ctrlPrint 5.0.2.33 plugin to adobe incopy CS3. After installing that plugin exe , in adobe incopy first window, plugin will add two tabs called ctrl and ctrlPrint if we press ctrl tab than there is a feature called check for updates and i have to disable this update so pls suggest me how to do it ?  no reg entry ,no update reg ,no xlm file for update is there.

    Hi,
    If you are referring to Help -> Check for Updates, I'm not certain if that is possible.
    If you mean Tools -> Preferences -> Extensions, just uncheck the Automatically Check for Updates box. Doing that is standard procedure for improving the tool's launch performance.
