  • HT4667 How to disable IPv6 on MAC OS X Lion?

    Hi everyone,
I am using Macbook Air OS X Lion. I have been facing slow internet browsing problem from quite a while now. I checked the forums and found that lot of people are facing the same problem. Also found that disabling IPv6 or setting it to manual mode will help fixing the issue. But another big challenge is how to do it. I tried setting it to manual which would need router address, IPv6 address and prefix length which is supposed to be collected from your ISP. Unfortunately Comcast hasnt implemented IPv6 yet so couldnt find that information. Also couldnt find the disable option as mentioned in one of the Apple article.
So I am stuck with Macbook air with slow internet speed. If anybody could help, it would be much apprecaited.
    Thanks,
    SJ

  • How to disable wifi for MAC desktop?

This is probably a very simple process.  I just need a little direction.  Does anyone happen to know how to disable wifi on a MAC desktop when using an ethernet cable versus wifi?

EDIT: If the stuff below seems more complicated than you wish to be involved in, feel free to ignore it.
The Mac will send packets bound for the Internet to the Top-Most ACTIVE interface listed in the left side of the box at:
    System Preferences > Network
If you set the 'Service Order' to have Ethernet at the top, whenever Ethernet is working, Wi-Fi will be ignored.
Set Service order is available using the gear Icon at the bottom of that box.
So all my Internet traffic is going over my Ethernet connection, even though Wi-Fi is still connected and nominally "active".

  • How to disable updates on Mac Clients

    Hi
I am working in school. It is bit of hassel when students are working on something and updates pop up every 5 minutes.

That has little to do with Windows and Apple Software Update, but would fit into Using Mac OS X Leopard.

  • How to disable autoupdate on Mac

Now before anybody replies, let me explain.  I am not interested in merely going into the Adobe Reader application's Preferences>Updates>etc.  My concern is a bit more specific.
Adobe Reader was not launched by me.  It automatically launched itself and wanted to update something.  To the best of my knowledge this can only be accomplished two ways:  1) a cron setting (as in the unix command-line cron) and 2) a daemon process running in the background.  I checked cron and didn't see anything there, which leads me to think that adobe reader installed some background process that's running 24/7.  If such a background process exists, how do I kill it, and where is it running from?  I can't allow any 3rd party background processes to run on this machine.
Again, I must reiterate, I am not content to merely change the application's Preferences.  Whatever the mechanism was that it used to launch itself without permission is something I must disable/break/delete.  Simply allowing the background daemon to run quietly without auto-launching isn't good enough.

That has little to do with Windows and Apple Software Update, but would fit into Using Mac OS X Leopard.

  • How to disable netbios on Mac OS X?

When I connect a share from a server with Mac OS X clients, i.e. with Finder and -K or mount_smbfs, these things make the connection to the port 139, which is deprecated (netbios -port). All modern Samba implementations use the port 445 instead. Even if I instruct mount_smbfs not to use netbios with mount_smbfs -I server.ip.address //server.ip.address/share, it STILL uses netbios ports to make the connection! This seems like a serious bug to me.
Now, as our network policy forbids using netbios and firewalls block this protocol, Apples simply do not work in this environment.
Question: how to force the samba -related clients to use port 445 and forget about 137/139 once and for all? I have not found any hints anywhere, how to do this.
The only client, that respects /etc/smb.conf is smbclient, and suprise, surprise, that one works flawlessly and does use port 445, when told so. But, all the other samba-clients don't read smb.conf at all and don't have any configuration options anywhere - or do they?
    Arno

SMB.conf file is used to configure the server end of
    samba, not necessarily the client.
I am aware of this, however, smb.conf was the only samba-related configuratin file I found. As smbclient turned out to actually use it, I hoped it would influence the other samba-clients as well - it does not.
Our question to you might be: what kind of server are
    you connecting to via SMB?
    Linux? UNIX? OSX-server? Windows?
All of them, makes no difference really. All work flawlessly, if I connect from Windows or from Linux, but none works, if I connect from Mac OS X.
(if Windows, what version of server software,
    please)
    Windows 2003 Server.
and when you enter the servername/IPaddress, end it
    with ":445)
I'll try this. So far, I put the :445 at the end of the server name - it had no influence: SMB://[Server_IP]:445/[Share]. Also, putting it to the end has no effect. It still tries to port 139.
    like:
    SMB://[Server_IP]/[Share]:445
Is that what you are trying?
Yes, this exactly - and the same in Finder. The above just does not work, mount_smbfs stubbornly tries to connect to the port 139 and so does Finder.

  • How to disable syncing between .Mac mail and Mail.app?

    Howdy everyone,
I'm trying to get my wife's 'new' (aka hand-me-down) 12" PowerBook set up the way she likes it. She uses .Mac Mail, and mostly uses the webmail portion, rather than the Mail.app. Anyway, she's presented me with a question that's stumped me - she wants it set up so that when she deletes a message from .Mac webmail, it stays in her Mail.app Inbox, and vice-versa. I guess you could say that she wants Mail.app to retrieve the messages from .Mac, but doesn't want their mailboxes synced.
Any ideas? I'd fiddled with the settings but can't make it work that way. I have a strong feeling that its right in front of me, but I just can't see it...
    Any help would be great!
    Thanks,
    Huxley

A .Mac type account with the Mail.app is really an IMAP type account and behaves in the same way.
Personal preference but FYI, webmail access is primarily designed when away from your computer and email client needing to access your email account when using a computer with internet access that is not your own.
For what your wife wants, she needs to access her .Mac account as a POP type account with the Mail.app. You can access a .Mac account as a .Mac, IMAP or POP type account with the Mail.app and as an IMAP or POP type account with other email clients.
This will require deleting and recreating the account in Mail selecting POP as the account type when the account is recreated.
All messages that remain on the server will not be affected by this but any messages sent by the account with the Mail.app that are not stored on the server will be deleted when deleting the account in Mail.
If there are any messages in the account's Sent mailbox that need to be saved, transfer all messages from the account's Sent mailbox to a user created "On My Mac" location mailbox before deleting and re-creating the account.
After re-creating the account in Mail as a POP type account, go to Mail > Preferences > Accounts and under the Advanced tab for the account preferences is a setting for removing messages from the server when downloaded. This should not be selected so no messages will be removed/deleted from the server when downloaded by Mail.
Deleting a message from the server via webmail access for the account will have no effect on messages already downloaded from the server by Mail.

I have an older mac and it wants me to update to itunes 10 but my mac is too old and I cant figure out how to disable the update so I can use the store.

If Software Update is offering the update then it would be compatible with your model.  Unfortunately, you haven't provided us with any information on your hardware that would enable us to determine if it really is too old.
If you really wish to disable the update alert then the next time Software Update opens, select the update in the list then select "Ignore update" from SU's Update menu.

  • How to perform a classic Mac OS search in Tiger

In an this post I will describe how to perform a classic Mac OS search and give example results. You may perform the search with or without the spotlight database. This search falls under the smart folder implementation introduced with Tiger. I have done all my testing with Mac OS 10.4.11. I assume this will work with any version of Tiger or Leopard.
The results will be slightly different with a spotlight database on the partition and without a database on the partition. With a database, you will not see Unix hidden files. You may be able to use all of the spotlight special find features. I did not test much with the spotlight special fields. Without a database, using the special features nulls out the search and the "Search for" field seems to give the same result as using the name field.
This search technique was obscured by all the hoopla over spotlight. Authors of Tiger books avoided mentioning the Classic search interface. When I looked in Leopard books I noticed some authors put back information on the Classic search interface.
For testing I created these files
For testing I created a test "z-find" folder on my Macintosh-HD, containing files and folders with various attributes, then copied it over to my Spotless flash drive. This means both searches searched for the same file names.
I put these files on my Macintosh-HD and Spotless partitions.

There are some downsides. Initially, the search will find both visible and invisible Mac OS files. However, the search seems to get confused between visible and invisible files when you select the visibility option. It seems to get the visible correct when you use visible but when you add invisible things get confused. Sometimes it will find invisible files and sometimes it won't. I used both the Unix invisible files and the Mac OS X visiblity attribute.
In putting the same search in the upper right-hand-corner spotlight search and in the Search for field, I did not get the same results. The spotlight search returned a 182 items while the with Search for field returned 179 items. The Search for field seemed to miss items in the mail boxes. With the Search for search you could display spotlight results in the classic format.
I did a successful search on my fat32 flash drive.
Perform the Classic Mac OS search without the spotlight database.
If you turn off spotlight indexing on a volume and delete the spotlight index, then Mac OS Tiger reverts to the prior Mac OS search facility. In the preferences for spotlight, you let searching continued on the partition.
    Here is what I did:
    I installed the spotless application.
    http://www.fixamac.net/software/spot/
I use spotless to configure spotlight. Click on disabled indexing then click on delete index files.
Spotless creates the .Spotlight-V100 directory with the _IndexPolicy.plist and _rules.plist to prevent indexing on the partition.
I performed the search for files containing "bash-" in the name field.
This is the result of the search without the Spotlight databases:

    bash-copy    {folder}
    bash-folder__green    {folder and labeled with the Green attribute}
    ping_command-bash-copy.html
    Limitations:
Does not search in Unix hidden folders. That is folders beginning with a period (.) .
Sometimes will find files beginning with a period (.).
Does not find Mac OS invisible files.
Using the special features nulls out the search.

Spotless creates the .Spotlight-V100 directory with the _IndexPolicy.plist and _rules.plist to prevent indexing on the partition.
I performed the search for files containing "bash-" in the name field.
This is the result of the search without the Spotlight databases:
    bash-backup-inside-bash-copy.html
    bash-backup.html
    bash-batChmod.html
    bash-battery_yellow_4k.html    {labeled with the Yellow attribute}
    bash-copy    {folder}
    bash-folder__green    {folder and labeled with the Green attribute}
    ping_command-bash-copy.html
    Limitations:
Does not search in Unix hidden folders. That is folders beginning with a period (.) .
Sometimes will find files beginning with a period (.).
Does not find Mac OS invisible files.
Using the special features nulls out the search.
The Search for field seems to give the same result as using the name field.

  • How to disable iMessage for a single contact?

Hello apple communites, I have a simple and hopefully simple to answer question..
I am curious as to how to disable iMessaging for a single contact.  My sister when she got her phone number originally had an iPhone, she has since gotten an android and kept the same phone number.  However I am running into issues with text messages to her, my phone still thinks she has an iPhone and continues to send every text as an iMessage, resulting in a failed message.  I can easily hit the "send again as a text message" option and the message/picture sends as normal.  I however find this a bit fustrating, and have tried everything I can think of to attempt to disable this.  However all the online tutorials I can find regarding disabling iMessage turns the feature off completly, I don't wish to do that.
I have attempted to completely delete, (including all existing all texts and call history), and then re-add the contact, but that does not work either, my iPhone still attempts to send messages to my sister as an iMessge. Any help, if any, would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Your sister needs to disable iMessage on her iPhone if the iPhone is still available if she hasn't already done so.
If she has, does she have iMessage enabled with the same Apple ID on another iOS device or on a Mac as was used to activate iMessage on her iPhone?

I would like to play a movie on my iMac but to watch it on my LCD TV. How to disable iMac screen and not to put it into sleep. My brother has eight cats, so your not along. Fortunetly his go outside.
I have been talking to the people over at macforums and they had some good thoughts. One guy suggested going analog and soldering in a rocker switch on the cable connecting a hub to the computer, turn off switch turns off keyboard and mouse.
I was prepared to try that but a great idea came along. Arch, you might be interested in this too. Buy a cheap (found one locally for $20) usb kvm switch that takes one usb keyboard and mouse and connects it to two pcs/macs and only connect one of the outs to my system. There is a button to switch between the two, so when I want to disable the keyboard and mouse, I just switch it to pc2, which is not connected to anything.
Cheap and easy solution. I wish I could of figured out how to do this with software, since there would be no money if it was freeware, but I guess you cant win them all.
    Thanks everyone for chiming in!

  • How to disable Leap Motion app from startup?

Hi, I installed the Leap Motion on my Mac running Mountain Lion. Whenever my computer boots up, the Leap Motion app automatically starts up as well. I tried checking the specific settings of Leap Motion but there was no configuration there. I also tried to look on the Startup Items (System Preferences > Users & Groups) but there was no entry regarding Leap Motion.
Is there another way to check how to disable this from happening?
    Thanks.

You will find a line item
    com.leapmotion.Leap-Motion.plist
    Library/LaunchAgents
Just rename from .plist to .bak - incase you would like to auto startup again.
I believe Leap Motion chose to use LaunchAgent rather than 'Login Items' is because they couldn't get it to startup all the time.
