How to do a background with soft circles(?)

Hi - I've seen this effect a lot.  I don't know what it's called (maybe a name for it?) but was wondering if someone knows how to create this in CS4 PSD?  See the image below - it's the soft circles background:
Funny thing is, you can actually create this effect optically with a camera and Xmas lights by zooming in from afar and then de-focusing the lens.  But I'm hoping there's a way to do it completely in PSD.
Thanks.

Again, can't thank you enough for revealing the effect - bokeh.
Found a great tutorial in case others want to learn:

I also threw my own together after watching above.  It needs tweaking but now I know how to do it:

  • How to change white background with text to transparent background

    Good afternoon,
    I have a jpg file (part of our logo) white background with black text and I would like to change it to transparent background and keep the black text (to be able to insert it on a cup image).
    I tried to change it in photoshop, however, when I slide the "opacity" and "fill", the text got ligther as well.
    Do I need to have the original psd.file to be able to do that, or can you please lead me through with jpg file? (I tried to save the jpg to psd and png, but it did not help.)
    I looked on one of your videos, but I could not find one of the features under "Select" tab.
    My plan is to recreate the text to have the transparent background if necessary (It would be great if I can avoid that). However, how do I find out which font was originaly used? Does photoshop has this feature, or do I need to go trough each of the font one-by-one?
    My last question is, how do I change space between letters (to have them more tight. I am not able to find it.
    Thank you for your help,
    Klara

    If you can get teh original PSD file get it, your task will be a lot easier.
    I suspect that won't be an option to you.
    If you know what fonts are being used, that also would be of benefit to you. In other word remake it using your image as a template.
    If it going over an image, then a multiply blend might work for you.
    All that fails then you are down to removing the white background. The problem this option is it will not look as good due to the thin lines on the fonts. But essentially, Load the image into photoshop, make sure the layer isnt locked, then try the magic eraser tool on the white background, bam it'll disappear, but leave the white inside the O white you will have to do seperately.
    Messing with levels will help you with more of the white. Myself i'd rebuild it using the fonts.

  • How to mark (psd) Images with the Circle Symbol without duplicating them

    I would like to import my layered images in Aperture.
    The problem is i would like to further adjust them in photoshop cs3 without creating a duplicate.
    Is there a possibility to mark this images with the Circle Symbol (for edited with external editor) or do I really have to open each image than close again, delete the master and then the remaining image with the circle can be opened and further enhanced in Photoshop without duplicating the image.
    Another example:
    I like to open a psd file within aperture with: edit with Adobe Photoshop CS3.
    The Image should open without being duplicated. Then I could drag the layer into another PSD document and close it again.
    Right now I would end up with a Master Duplicate which I have to delete afterwards.
    I know I could use referenced files and say show in finder but I like managed better,
    also:
    Show in finder does show you only one image (I like to do that to 5 or 10 images at once).
    bc

    Like I said if you want to get into the programming business you can modify the aperture database directly but I don't know of an easier way with managed masters. You can always just do your workaround to files that you are actually working on and you only need to do it once.
    Sorry there is no answer to easier answer to deal with all of them at the same time. At least none I can think of off the top of my head.
    RB
    Ps. Lightroom can just open your PSD files but that is an apples and oranges thing. Lightroom is not trying to manage your masters for you in a managed library an ensure that nothing modifies them, if you are ok with that method than referenced files should be ok with you as well, you can always use referenced for your legacy PSDs and use a managed methodology for your new images going forward starting with the source image.

  • How to remove transparent background from a circle shape

    I have been desperately trying to create a circular logo for an icon in Photshop CS6. Unfortunately I have to start with a rectangular background. After creating the circluar icon I want to remove it from the canvas leaving only the circular icon. I can't find a way to do it.
    Everytime I try I end up with the canvas shape behind the icon logo.
    Isn't there a way to crop a circle? Initiate a circular canvas? Help!

    Hi there
    As Charles mentioned, it would be very helpful if you could post a screenshot. When you say "rectangular background", do you mean the locked background layer that's in your layers panel when you create a new canvas? I've posted a screenshot below.
    If this is the case, you can simply delete this background layer. Unless you have another background layer, this will leave you with a transparent background, essentially "removing" the area around your logo. You would then be able to save the file in a format that supports transparency (such as .png).
    Please post again if you need further clarification. Screenshots would be very helpful!

  • How change the wallpaper/background with a command line ?

    Hi people,
    did someone know how change the wallpaper with a command line ?
    thx a lot

    Hi,
    I think this can be done with PowerShell. We could create a function to set wallpaper:
    Function Set-WallPaper($Value)
     Set-ItemProperty -path 'HKCU:\Control Panel\Desktop\' -name wallpaper -value $value
     rundll32.exe user32.dll, UpdatePerUserSystemParameters
    Open PowerShell; paste the function above in it to make this function work.
    Now, if you want to change some wallpaper, you could type the following text:
    Set-WallPaper -value "the path of you wallpaper"
    If you are interested, I would like to share the following article with you for your reference:

  • How to erase 3D bevel with intersecting circle...

    Hi there,
    I'm an absolute newbie at Illustrator CS5. I'm trying to start out with some basic graphic design stuff just for fun and possibly in future to bolster my employability.
    I have come up with my first  major hurdle quite early on for which there seems no ready-made solution on the net so thought I'd consult the forum to find a solution.
    I've set about creating a 3D badge logo of a circle made up three different interlocking "teardrop" shapes. I created the one shape within an ellipse, used the pen tool to create the "teardrop" effect and isolate the object. I then copied and pasted the shape twice, changed their colours and arranged them around the centre of the artboard to create an interlocked effect and then extruded and beveled...well, I thought I had.
    I'm having trouble getting rid of the higlighted bevel (below) on the 3D object to create that interlocked effect. Stacking objects diffrerently won't work because one object always has to be in front of another and creates the overlap of the blue shape over the yellow one.
    I suspect it could be solved using layers and paths or using an eraser tool within the bounds of a path but, as I said, I'm very new to this and am gradually shedding light on all the tricks of the trade as I spend time on this software and the help of more experienced users.
    Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

    Remove the 3D Effect from the three paths. Then Group the three paths and apply 3D Effect to the Group.
    Understand that live Effects can be applied at the object level, the Group level, or the Layer level.

  • I updated my MacBook Air and now it will not restart. It just sits on apple with spinning circle. Any suggetions on how to reboot and get to start window?

    It was in process of updating and when the mac restarted it just sits there with spinning circle. I have waited for hours to no avail. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to resolve?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
    Holding down the power button for more than 10 Seconds will force quit your Mac. This might leave it in a state where it will not restart at all.
    I would wait at least a minute before restarting after forced shutdown.
    The update may restart or resume.
    The reason your update failed may be a bad or failing SSD.

    Living in Japan and I'm an American who just signed up with Soft Bank the phone service here and spent a TON of money on an iPhone. I can't figure out how to connect my bank account at home to my app account so I can Skype my family. Please help!!!! I don't have a credit card nor do they gove debit cards to foreigners here, or at least it's really hard so I'm using my bank at home and still have a debit there. My phone number is 8 numbers plus the country code which is strange! Another thing is I was given a phone email that I was told to use for texting but I'm not sure how that works!! It's so frustrating too because no one speaks English here and I'm not very tech savvy. God bless you if you can help :)

    whichever app store you are connecting to, hyou need a credit card with an address in that country. Also, itunes gift cards must be in local currency too.
    If you are in japan, you need to use the japan app store

    They changed it a bit, but you can still close apps. Double click the Home button to pull up the currently running apps. Side scroll over to the app you want to close, then swipe up on the app *window* (not the icon at the bottom).

    say: "Setting the background color in the Graphics2D context only

        bIG2.setBackground(Color.white);
        bIG2.clearRect(0, 0, buIm.getWidth(), buIm.getHeight());
    if (false) {

  • How to use a scaled object(MC) to fill the background with the new properties

    So lets say i have a stage 300 to 200 and all object that i have are for this dimensions.Also have an pattern function that fills the background.
    But the user is thinking of resizing the stage to lets say 1024 to 480 (he switched from a phone to a tablet).And now the scale of the objects in the tablet screen are more than 3times before(when seen on the Phone)
    How do i save the current new size object and use it in the creation of the new background (the 1024x480).
    currently i have this :
    public static const GAME_ORG_WIDTH:uint = 300;
    public static const GAME_ORG_HEIGHT:uint = 200;
    public function MainClass_road() {
                                  addEventListener(Event.ADDED, init);
                        public function init(e:Event):void{
                                   stage.scaleMode = StageScaleMode.NO_SCALE;
                                     stage.align = StageAlign.TOP_LEFT;
                                     stage.addEventListener(Event.RESIZE, setUpScreen);
                        public function setUpScreen(ev:Event):void{
                                  stage.removeEventListener(Event.RESIZE, setUpScreen);
                                  if(stage.fullScreenHeight > stage.fullScreenWidth){
                                            gameStageWidth = stage.fullScreenWidth;
                                gameStageHeight = stage.fullScreenHeight;
                                  }else {
                                            gameStageWidth = stage.fullScreenHeight;       // 480
                                            gameStageHeight = stage.fullScreenWidth;                     //1024
                                  rescaleRatio = gameStageWidth / GAME_ORG_WIDTH;
                                  //rescale every object, ie:
                                myC.scaleX = myC.scaleY =   rescaleRatio;
                       //start filling the Background with the pattern

    and is it better to use
    stage.fullScreenHeight
    in the while loop or leave it like it is ,or its irrelevant
