How to do a complete fresh install on my 2009 iMac

I have  couple of nagging software problems with my 2009 iMac and I would like to do a complete fresh install of Mountain Lion and start again afresh.  I have done a complete backup on my Time Capsule and then select just what I want reinstalled.

If you are on Mountain Lion, then use recovery to erase your drive and reinstall it:

  • How do I do a fresh install of Mountain Lion on a SSD?

Hey guys, tried searching on the forums for this but I couldn't find it. Doesn't help that my internet connection has having severe issues today either!
I just bought myself a new Macbook Pro a couple of days ago and finally have the time to set it up today. It currently has the normaly 500gb hard drive in there. Now I have an SSD in my old Macbook Pro, which I will be formatting and placing into the new MBP. How would I then go about doing a fresh install of Mountain Lion without the Mountain Lion setup file? I know I can purchase it on the App store, but I shouldn't have to do that as my new MBP is of course Mountain Lion.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks guys.

If it wasn't a Mac computer that originally came with either Lion or Mt Lion Pre-Installed by Apple when new you would not be able to connect to the Online Internet Recovery system. It is a Feature of the Mac EFI Firmware system. And it will only install whichever version of the Download only version of OS X that originally came on that system.
My MBP came with Lion Preinstalled. Even if I have Mt Lion installed on the hard drive the Online Internet Recovery system would always point my MBP to the Lion download as that was the original version of OS X that came on my Mac.
No real authentication needed. Since your Mac came with Mt Lion no matter what newer versionof OS X you ever install the OIRS will always point you to Mt Lion and ONLY Mt Lion.
It is something different, but not completely different, from the built in Recovery HD partition on the internal drive.
No worries as during the install of MT Lion on your SSD the installer will Recreate the Mt Lion Recovery HD partition on your SSD.

  • How to do a complete re-install on an original iPhone?

Im so fed up with it crashing (especially on this very site) and the fact that the locate-me button doesnt work in Maps.
    I want to do a complete re-install.
How do I do this without losing any contacts/songs/text messages etc?
    Tc

There is a Restore option with iTunes.
This completely erases the iPhone and then re-installs the firmware.
After the firmware is re-installed, you are prompted to restore your iPhone from your iPhone's backup (which is the default selection), or as a new iPhone or not from your iPhone's backup.
Either selection must be followed by a sync to transfer your iTunes content and any other data transferred to your iPhone via the iTunes sync process.
Certainly you are syncing your contact information and calendar events with the Address Book and iCal or with the address book and calendar included with Entourage 2004 or 2008? This data will be restored when syncing along with your iTunes content, bookmarks, and photos transferred from your computer to your iPhone.
Your iPhone's backup stores most of your iPhone settings, SMS messages, notes, recent calls, call favorites, and photos captured by your iPhone - but I wouldn't depend on the last one. You should import all photos that were captured by your iPhone to your computer before doing a restore. Basically your iPhone's backup stores data available on your iPhone not included with the iTunes sync process.
If you don't restore your iPhone from your iPhone's backup, the data included with your iPhone's backup will not be available. If there is a problem with your iPhone's backup and you restore from your iPhone's backup, you are also restoring the problem.

  • How do I do a fresh install of Creative Cloud?

    Hello all,
Here's my issue... Creative Cloud App Manager says that some apps are installed when they're not, some apps aren't installed when in fact they are, and some apps that used to work, now simply crash upon trying to open them. It's a huge mess.
Also, programs like InDesign and Illustrator, although they are installed, App Manager says they're not; their Uninstall Alias' in the app folder says the link is broken/missing.
I would like to just do a fresh install of all my Creative Cloud stuff, since it sounds like something went horrible awry during install.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

    Thanks again.

I am having a similar problem (on a Mac) of Application Manager not detecting the currently installed Dreamweaver CS6 and Creative Cloud Connection apps. I also noticed that with my current installation of Dreamweaver, there are certain features (e.g. Extension manager) which say "Unavailable. please reinstall Dreamweaver":
If I click "Install" for Dreamweaver, it fails and tells me "Download error. Press Retry to try again or contact customer support. (307)".
I deactivated Dreamweaver then attempted to uninstal it, but the Uninstaller alias found in Applications > Dreamweaver folder is broken.
Also, the only thing in Applications/Utilities/Adobe Installers is a broken alias for "Uninstall Adobe Creative Cloud Connection".
I downloaded the Adobe Cleaner Tool and selected "Clean All", but this did not remove the installed files. Now the cleaner tool doesn't even detect a session to delete.
How do I proceed to do a clean install of Creative Cloud and CS6? I just really want my Application Manager to be able to manage all the installations and updates without issue.
    Thanks

  • How Do I Do A Fresh Install?

As discussed on this thread I got my hard drive replaced by Apple recently and have been having problems with Logic being slow ever since.
On that thread, a couple of people mentioned that it could be because I did a Time Machine restore and that it might be better for me to do a fresh install of OS and Logic and then copy any personal data over.
Sorry to sound dumb, but could someone tell me how to do this?

    To make a fresh install:
    1. Make a backup of your data.
    2. Hold Command and R keys while your computer is starting, and open Disk Utility.
    3. Choose Macintosh HD in the sidebar, go to Erase tab and erase the disk.
    4. Close Disk Utility and reinstall OS X.
After reinstalling OS X, install the applications as usual, so Logic Pro should work correctly. If you want more information about OS X Recovery > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718

  • Completely fresh install of Solaris 10 on Ultra20

    Hi Folks,
I need to completely reinstall Solaris 10 on my Ultra 20, and due to past file system problems want to make this an entirely "clean" installation.
How can I format and prepare my drive for this clean installation? No dual/triple boots will be necessary.
Recent attempts have stalled after installation upon rebooting, when it never gets past the "Configuring devices" message....
    Any help/suggestions much appreciated.

    Hi Folks,
I need to completely reinstall Solaris 10 on my Ultra
20, and due to past file system problems want to make
this an entirely "clean" installation.Just run a normal "initial" install rather than an "upgrade". The process will suggest and prompt for a disk layout, and it will create a new, empty filesystem on the disk.
Recent attempts have stalled after installation upon
rebooting, when it never gets past the "Configuring

  • Windows Server 2012 R2 with Exchange Server 2013 SP1 Completely fresh install giving errors signing into EAC

    Hi,
I am struggling with a completely clean installation of Server 2012 R2 and Exchange 2013 SP1.  I followed these steps:
    Installed Server OS
    Windows Updates
Added Active Directory Role (This is a single standalone server that would have been SBS until it was dropped)
    Added DHCP & DNS
    Added Certificate Services
Added Windows Server Update Services (WID Database & WSUS Services)
    Windows Updates
    Added Media Foundation
Added File Server Resource Manager and Work Folders
    Added Windows Server Backup
    Windows Updates
Checked all running without errors in Server Manager and performed a full bare bones backup.
    Ran Setup.exe from Exchange 2013 SP1 disc.
    Installed Pre-requisites and then rebooted
    Windows Updates
    Ran Setup.exe from Exchange 2013 SP1 disc.
    Installation completed without errors
    Rebooted
Checked all running without errors in Server Manager.
I Launch Exchange Administrative Center and get "problem with website's server certificate error" (normal on machine with self-assigned certificates).  Click Continue to Website and get:
    Windows Security dialog box:
iexplore - "The server localhost is asking for your username and password.  The server reports that it is from Digest"
however no username and password combination will work:  have tried [Administrator]; [Domain\Administrator] even created a user to no avail.
I believe the issue is somewhere in the IIS configuration because I also get the same error when trying to log into the server website from either the server or another machine on the network.
I have tried the complete installation three times now:  (full disclosure not all of the same features/roles each time).  On the first attempt I got this error immediately and on try number 2 was able to get into the EAC and created the mailboxes
but then it started giving the same error.  The above steps are try number 3.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.
    Andy Halford
P.S. A Follow up which might be significant:  The Default Web Site is not running and will not start (it was previously running before the Exchange installation) and when I try I get the message that Another Website may be using the same port however none
of the others (Exchange Back End or WSUS Administration) are using ports 80 or 443 and I still get the error when they are both stopped.

Could you post the list of sites:
    appcmd list site
The ones listening on port 80:
    appcmd list site /bindings:http/*:80:
    And on port 443:
    appcmd list site /bindings:https/*:443:

  • HT1926 I have tried to delete the latest itunes and get back to 10.7. Now I have nothing in my library. How do I get the freshly installed itunes 10.7 to sync with the itunes STORE, and get me computers library back?

I just tried to delete the new itunes (Hate it & could figure out how to sync iphone any more), and I reverted back to itunes 10.7 64-bit. When I tried to use itunes, it couldnt read the library because it had been created by the newer version (why it didn't get deleted when I removed itunes I do not know), so I deleted a few itune library files that I found still on my computer. Now I have the 10.7, but nothing in it... no library items. How do it get the itunes to sync with the itunes store

This is what you should have done...
To roll back to iTunes 10.7 first download a copy of the installer from here, uninstall iTunes and suppporting software, i.e. Apple Application Support & Apple Mobile Device Support. Reboot. Restore the pre-upgrade version of your library database as per the diagram below, then install iTunes 10.7.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to scan the media folder and catch up with any changes made since the backup file was created.

  • Can I do a complete fresh install of 10.8 if I make a DVD of the downloaded image?

    Folks,
    Warning: contains minor rant.
I have a Macbook Pro that I have Linux on and rarely use with OS X. However, I want to use Logic to be compatible with fellow musicians that I want to write songs with, and I cannot use this application [Logic] with OS X 10.6.8. Obv.
I've downloaded Mountain Goat or whatever OS X 10.8 is called and tried to install it, but I'm getting this error that seems to affect a lot of people in that it gives this ****ing useless message "this disk cannot be used to start up your computer". Which is clearly nonsense as I can boot into Linux and OS X no problem. I am assuming that the problem is with refit, and OS X has thrown its toys out of the pram because there's a superior operating system installed which it's sulking and pouting about.
    Soooo...
    ...rant over...
...it looks like I can burn the 10.8  InstallESD.img to a DVD (I assume this is just Apple's verssion of an iso) and, finally, here is the brunt of my gist:
Can I use this DVD to completely wipe the hard drive, get rid of the whole lot, install 10.8 and then reinstall refit and Linux to live in peaceful harmony alongisde 10.8? This is probably the easiest option in the end as all my important Linux data is always safely backed up and Linux is very quick and easy to install.
    Many thanks.

The short answer is 'yes' and here's the easist way to do it...
If you've downloaded but not installed 10.8.x, you should have a file in your Applications folder named "Install OS Mountain Lion.app". If it's not there, download it again and quit the installer. The get a 8BG+ USB thumb drive and use Lion DiskMaker (don't worry, it works with ML, too) to create a bootable installation disk.
Boot from the USB stick and use Disk Utility to erase you boot drive. Then install OS X on your machine. THEN you can re-add Linux, etc., and all should be well.

  • Broken superdrive, how do i get a fresh install

So i have a late 2006 black macbook. It came with tiger, but i bought the leopard upgrade dvd when it came out and installed that. Someone stepped on it and now the superdrive doesn't work. Not that big of a deal to get fixed since i never used it. I just bought a new mbp so i want to get a clean install of my old macbook so i can give it to my brother. the laptop just isn't as fast as it used to be so i want to start from scratch. I have both the original tiger dvd and leopard upgrade dvd, but how can i do this without a dvd drive? from what I've read, i can connect my new mbp to my old mb in firewire target disk mode, put the tiger disk in and boot the mb from there. then put the leopard in and do the same thing? does that make sense? is there an easier way?

    Hi,
my macbook will seem to be an external disk drive on my macbook pro, and from there i can erase the hard drive using disk utility. then i'll put the tiger disk into the mbp and install it on the "external disk drive"?
If you boot the MB into target disk mode and connect it, it would indeed appear as an external drive as seen from the new MBP, but you then would be asking the MBP to boot and run a Tiger install DVD that is not only machine-specific for a different Mac, but also contains an earlier OS version than the version that the MBP shipped with. I'd be surprised if that worked.
Instead, I would do it "the other way", booting the MBP into target disk mode, borrowing only its DVD drive, and running the install from the MB as host. That way the MB boots and runs the same Tiger disk that it came with. To do this, shut down the MB, insert the Tiger DVD into the MBP, and restart the MBP while holding down the T key, booting it into TDM. Connect it to the MB and then start the MB while holding down the Option key. This should boot the MB into the startup manager, and hopefully you will see the Tiger OS X install DVD as one of the startup choices. Select that, and proceed with the Tiger installation. Be sure you pick the correct "Macintosh HD" (the MB's HD, not the MBP's!) for the erase and install.
If this works, you should be able to do the same thing with the Leopard Upgrade DVD.

  • How to remove en completely newly install a game app

    Hi,
I was playing a game, but i want to delete it and reinstall to start all over again from the start.
I did al the things on this site discussions (hiding, removing etc.), but to no avail.
In the store to download the app there's allways the 'cloud' icon, and then the game starts were I left off.
But I want to start all over again...
    Anyway this can be done?
    Thanks!
    Lex

There's some confusion going on here.
Although you can always re-download the game from the "cloud" (the AppStore), that maybe seperate to your saved game progress.
Different developers use different methods for saving game progress. Some save it within the app itself on the device. In this case, deleting the game will also delete the game progress.
Some developers store saved game progress on the Internet somewhere (either their own servers, Facebook, or perhaps in Apple's iCloud) so progress can be synced between multiple devices/platforms. In this case deleting the game app won't delete your game progress.
If you tell us what game you are referring to, maybe someone will know how to delete your game progress.
