How to do a cutaway in imovie

I follow the directions in the help menue but nothing happens. I only copy or move the video I am trying to use for the cutaway. What is the secret??

the directions in the apple help menu are pointless. I did solve it though. You need to hold the option key while doing the directions. Doesn't say that though in the help menu.

You cannot put photos in a trailer. They are designed for videos.
However, there is a way around this.
Go to the Project Library view. Select your Trailer. Now, click FILE/CONVERT TO PROJECT.
Now you can add photos.

You will need an external drive that is formatted as MAC OS EXTENDED (journaled).
Move the Project, Events, and any photos and music to the external drive by following the instructions in this post.

Be sure to use CONSOLIDATE MEDIA to get the photos and music. Then plug this drive into your computer and you will be able to edit.

Trash the preference files while application is NOT Running.
Easiest way to find out if this is the problem is by:
• Create a new User-Account
• Log out of Your old one and into this
• Re-try iMovie
If it now works OK - then 99.9% the problem is iMovie pref. file that needs to be trashed.

You need to attach the computers to one another say with a firewire cable? Or use an external hard drive to copy the Events/Projects and then move the hard drive to the other computer. Are you able to do either one of these first?

How to export my film in iMovie 10.0.1 to use it in IDVD

I downloaded the new version of iMovie 10.0.1 today and I try to export my new created film to import it in IDVD.

Here is a step by step on how to create a DVD from iMovie 10 using iDVD 7.1.2.
1. Create a project in iMovie 10.0.1
2. Go to File>Share>File... and for Size choose Large 540P (960 x 540) and click Next
3. Choose a location on the hard drive to save the file to.
4. Wait for the blue circle activity indicator to finish.
5. In Finder, verify that iMovie created an MP4 file in the location specified in step 3.
6. Open iDVD and click "Create New Project."
7. Give the project a name and save it to your hard drive.
8. Drag the file you created earlier from the Finder into your iDVD project window.
(or go to File>Import>Video... and choose your video there)
9. Make any adjustments to drop zones, etc.
10. Click the burn button.
11. Insert a DVD and let it do its thing.
This produces a working DVD for me.

To burn a DVD with iDVD from the latest version of iMovie, you have to export the movie using the Export button and select 480p as the size. Open iDVD and start a new project, then drag that exported movie file into the iDVD menu window, avoiding any drop zones you see.

How do I use cutaway on an 0.1s video? When I insert a picture on a 0.1s video using cutaway, the pictures only lets me use it on multiple slides when I want to use it on only one slide.

I figured it out! You go to clip adjustments for the picture (just scroll over the picture) and change it to 0.1s, then you drag it to the spot where you want it ti be, it took me a couple of tries.
