How to do a fresh install of Yosemite?

Hey,
I know a lot of people have been asking about formatting and fresh install, and there are several articles in the internet related to this matter. Despite all of those articles and instructions, I have not been able to accomplish what I'm trying.
I bought a late 2011 Macbook Pro from my previous employee, so the laptop's full of work related material. Since I don't need any of it anymore, I want everything (and I mean absolutely everything) erased, so that nothing can be recovered.
I have a bootable USB stick with Yosemite in it, but my problem is that I cannot seem to get everything formatted. I managed to format the Recovery HD (don't need it), but I am not able to release that memory (650 MB) for the main HDD (in other words, I can not merge them). So in Disk Utility I have the HDD listed, and below it a blank disk. There's also something called "disk2" with "Mac OS X Base System" below it, which I have not been able to erase despite all the articles that have been trying to explain how it's done. The third item's a grayed out "SuperDrive", which is totally unfamiliar to me. I have no idea what it is.
Any ideas how to get everything erased? Bare in mind that I'm not too tech savvy with Macs, so I need very specific instructions

The "Superdrive" is the Optical Disc Drive (CD/DVD)

How to do a clean install of yosemite (have Mavericks 10.9.5 now) and then just install certain files, apps, documents, phopt's, etc...from time machine backup?

Do a backup before doing anything.
If you want to make a clean install of Mountain Lion, boot into the Recovery Volume (command - R) on a restart, use Disk Utility to Verify/Repair  the disk and run Repair Permissions. Then erase the hard drive using Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format using the Options button. Reinstall Yosemite. Restart normally and test. Use Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant to import what you want.

  • Fresh Install of Yosemite and still spinning beachballs...

Hey all, I've been having this spinning beachball issue for a long time now and it's really annoying. I just did a fresh install of Yosemite. My Mac Mini downloaded Yosemite from the Apple servers. I just turned on my Mac Mini to test it out and the spinning beachballs are back...
There must be a way I can fix this without erasing the whole drive and installing each app one at a time...
    Could someone please help me?
    Thanks for any help!

  • Fresh install of Yosemite, nearly unusable, constant spinning wheel

    Hello everyone,
    MacBook Pro 13'', mid 2012
    750GB HD
    8GB Ram
    2.9GHz dual-core Intel i7
A little background... once a year I usually back up my entire Macbook Pro, wipe it clean and install a fresh version of the most recent OS. I did this about a month ago and installed a fresh copy of Yosemite from Mountain Lion. For about 3 weeks it worked perfectly... running Adobe programs, and all my other normal applications (nothing big... Firefox, iMail, iTunes, etc).
NOW... about a week ago everything went to crap. The computer has become almost unusable without any change in habits of use. I get a CONSTANT spinning wheel whenever I click on anything its about a 30sec wait time and if I try to type something into Finder or Firefox its the death of the session... I have to restart the computer. Im at my whits end and about to use this computer as a expensive frisbee. This all started in Yosemite out of no where. There is NOTHING on my hard drive other than the operating system...
    What I have already done:
Taken it into the Genius Bar. They ran some tests on the computer and physically took out the hard drive to test it on their systems. Everything checked out and received a PASS rating. They said it was nothing hardware related. They said it could have been a bad install of Yosemite since the hard drive was showing up as a "Logical Volume Group" instead of "Mac Extended Journaled". Suggested to go home and re-install Yosemite. So I did... 3 times... and nothing changed at all, same spinning wheel of death with nothing installed other than the OS.
    In terminal
diskutil cs listdiskutil cs revert "UUID"
    this changed nothing as well
    Ran:
    Verify Disk Permissions
Repair Disk Permissions - this fixed a handful of errors
Verify DiskThese 3 steps did not help much.
I am now back running Mountain Lion, it is more responsive but I still get a constant spinning wheel. Again, There is NOTHING on my hard drive other than the OS.

Please help before I throw this thing out the window....
    Thanks in advance

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
The test works on OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later. I don't recommend running it on older versions of OS X. It will do no harm, but it won't do much good either.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of it have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message. See, for example, this discussion.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. Try to test under conditions that reproduce the problem, as far as possible. For example, if the computer is sometimes, but not always, slow, run the test during a slowdown.
You may have started up in "safe" mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
    PATH=/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/libexec;clear;cd;p=(1291 ' 0.5 0.25 50 1000 15 5120 1000 25000 6 6 5 1 0 100 ' 51 25600 4 10 25 5120 102400 1000 25 1 400 40 500 300 85 25 20480 262144 20     Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, a series of lines will appear in the Terminal window like this:
    [Process started]
Part 1 of 8 done at … sec
Part 8 of 8 done at … sec
The test results are on the Clipboard.
            Please close this window.
    [Process completed]
The intervals between parts won't be exactly equal, but they give a rough indication of progress. The total number of parts may be different from what's shown here.
Wait for the final message "Process completed" to appear. If you don't see it within about ten minutes, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, press the key combination control-C or command-period to stop it and go to the next step. You'll have incomplete results, but still something.
    12. When the test is complete, or if you stopped it because it was taking too long, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak for themselves, not for me. The test itself is harmless, but whatever else you're told to do may not be. For others who choose to run it, I don't recommend that you post the test results on this website unless I asked you to.

  • How to do a fresh install of tiger on g4 ibook

    Hi everyone,
I am wondering how I can do a fresh install of mac os tiger on my ibook with the cds that came with it. I am selling it and want to make it like its getting turned on for the first time and the person has to register and all that good stuff.
    Thanks.

So pretty much all I need to do is just insert the cds and follow the directions?
If you are referring to reinstalling, the answer is yes.
Should i zero my startup disk also or should zeroing the harddrive be enough?
The iBook's current startup disk IS the hard drive. When you boot from the install disc (CD/DVD) you will zero the hard drive in the iBook.

  • How to prepare for FRESH INSTALL?

    hi all.
i am about 2 years into my move back to mac with a small professional office and i am considering a fresh install of Lion from Snow Leopard on the Mac Pro (1st generation) and a 2009/10 MacBookPro. I believe the Mac Pro shipped with Leopard and the MacBookPro shipped with Snow Leopard but not sure if i am off by an OS release on that.
in any event, it has been a /ton/ of effort in customizing this setup and it includes an install of Mac Drive, Parallels and other software and software settings. I have also edited the registry on windows in a couple of instances and i have run a couple of Terminal customizations on the mac side.
    two questions.
    1. what should i do to prepare for a fresh install and how much time might be involved in redoing my setup?
    2. is it worth all the effort? i mean, i /do/ have a 2 TB hard drive to take the place of my existing 1 TB drive and I could use the extra space. but at the same time i wonder if a fresh install is necessary.
    TIA

If I understand correctly, you are still running SL. As I said, I'm not familiar with this when using any Windows install. If it were strictly Apple, then it wouldn't be a problem. But still if you want to do a full clean install, that would require reinstalling all applications manually. Otherwise, you would still be migrating the same files your already have.
Installing Lion over SL will give you a new OS. Unless you have hard drive issues, this should be all that's needed.
What I would do is check for any PPC applications. If you have any, then uninstall them. Check each application for complete removal instructions.
You might also use an application such as ONYX to caches, etc. Repair permissions. Just to get the system as clean as possible.
Once done, you would want to make a current backup. Maybe even a second just in case. You can always do a restore if nessary.
You could clone your system to an external drive using either SuperDuper or CarbonCopy Cloner. The advantage is that it's bootable. You could then install Lion on either the internal or external drive and make sure it works OK.

  • Macbook Pro (mid 2012) inbuilt Track pad behaving erratically after fresh install of Yosemite 10.10.2

I recently did a fresh install of the OS from online recovery. Mountain Lion was installed which I immediately upgraded to Yosemite 10.10.2. The trackpad started behaving erratically after two days. I seems that it started since I plugged one of my wifi router on the lan port. The trackpad is impossible to move as it seems to have a mind of its own. An external mouse connected works fine. Any help please !

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
Try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear and again when you log in. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don’t do them all at once.

  • How to do a fresh install of Mountain Lion after clean wipe of MacBook Pro Early 2008 version?

    Hey everyone,
The following are my computer specs:
    MacBook Pro
    15-inch, Early 2008
    Hardware
    Overview
    Processor
2.6 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory
    4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
    L2 Cache
    6 MB
    Graphics
NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT 512 MB
    Software
    Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4 (11E53)
mid 2008 - I got this laptop at the online Apple Store, configured to my specs. It came with Leopard.
mid 2009 - I bought a Snow Leopard disk from the Apple Store and upgraded the OS directly over Leopard, with all my data still there.
mid 2011 - I purchased the Lion download online from the Mac App Store and upgraded the OS again, directly over Snow Leopard, with all my data still there.
mid 2012 - Now I want to upgrade to Mountain Lion. I have already purchased the Mountain Lion download online from the Mac App Store and downloaded it to my computer. Have also copied (i guess) all my files, bookmarks, iTunes library on to an external HD.
But I haven't installed it yet because I want to first clean wipe my computer and restore it to factory settings, to the way it was when I first got it with Leopard, because its extremely slow. Doesn't even feel like that Mac I got..
Now my problem is - I don't have the Leopard CDs that came with it, nor the iWork or iLife ones which I bought with, or the Snow Leopard one which I got later.
I also don't see Apple offering the Lion download on the App Store anymore..so, can anyone please help me out with how I can do this?
Another thing I want to mention is - I had my display replaced at the Apple Store late 2011 because of that defect which apparenly affected many MacBook Pros from that period.
So was wondering if there might be any hardware issues if I downgraded all the way down to Leopard? Because at the time of the replacement, the laptop was running Lion.
    Any help is great, thanks!

    1) You don't see Apple offering Lion for download from the app store anymore because you already downloaded it to your computer. Hold down the option key then click on purchases and it should appear. I don't know why they hide it after you bought it?
         Ref: http://osxdaily.com/2011/08/02/re-download-mac-os-x-lion-from-app-store/
    2) Don't install Lion right after you download it from the app store! Make a copy and put it in a different directory first! I use this tutorial to make a bootable usb and a dvd for backup just in case. This will give you the "clean" install you are looking for.

  • How to do a fresh install of OSX

I just bought a new Macbook Air for my wife.
It didn't come with any re-install / system software.
If I need to reinstall the OS for some reason (which I do have to do from time to time on my other computers), how do I do this on an Air?
I have Mountain Lion, Leopard, and Snow Leopard installed as a boot device on a Thumb drive.
Could this work on an Air?
    Thanks

Your Mountain Lion, etc. flash drives will not work if the Mac came with a newer OS like Mavericks.
The way Apple provides to reinstall OS X is to hold down the Command and R keys during bootup, which will take you to the Recovery partition.

  • How much of a clean install is Yosemite?

My mac has been losing it's internet connection a lot.  The Wi-Fi signal is still there, but every once in a while it just can't find the internet.  When this happens I have to log out and restart my machine. It isn't the router since I don't have the same issues with my iPad, iPhone, Windows 8, or Ubuntu computers, just my iMac.  I was going to reinstall Maverick, but then I thought why not just upgrade to Yosemite.  Which I did a couple of hours ago.  Then just now I lost my internet connection.
So my question is this... is there any profit in reinstalling Yosemite?  I'm not quite at the point of wiping my entire hard drive and doing a complete clean reinstall (well almost).

I doubt that erasing your system merely to reinstall Yosemite anew is going to make any difference with an intermittent Wi-Fi connection, so I don't recommend it. In other words the answer is no.
I suggest using Apple's Wireless Diagnostics to provide additional helpful information:

  • How to do a FRESH install on NEW drive

I had my iMac's internal HD upgraded to 1TB today. The drive is a blank canvas so far. I've installed multiple OS Xs on Macs with factory drives, but never a retail drive. Do I do it the same way? i.e. pop in the disc and go to work?
I plan on reserving 15GB for Windows XP (gotta play Magic Online somehow)

    Piece of cake
Just insert the DVD and go through the normal process.
When the system reboots, you should be given a selection of drives on which to install Leopard.
Just be sure to select the proper one - the empty one and wait.

  • Yosemite fresh install - an idea I am trying

I Upgraded Yosemite on my MBAIR mid 2013 and Al has worked. I did this as an early adopter the moment it appeared on the App Store.
HOwever ver it does seem slow and dropbox has Ben malfunctioning for three months despite copious support. Other things don't seem right either, like there is a an unfriendly ghost in the machine. So I google that a fresh install while not required may be desirable.
I Find that like all things tech mostly it works and sometimes it does not: other threads on here confirm this; extremes of experience good and bad.
I Have these same experiences. Including time machine backups that even a Genius cannot fix. You can imagine my reaction after al the exhortations to backup to/with time machine. Apparently one faulty folder meant the entire backup was lost.
I have too many tears and years of experience really still to use technology.
So the challenge is how to create a fresh install, to add all my setup, vast number of apps, test it and without resorting to time machine backups ( of which I have FOUR, two external disks and two NAS drives ) plus drop box and additional NAS drive sync (synology drives x 2 about 50 terabytes as one backs up the other) - imagine losing your NAS drive, regret drive two is not offsite, though in a different room)
I Am not convinced my dropbox is accurate nor my NAS sync: one reason for the fresh install.
SOlution I have "in play" is this and interested to hear guidance from experience:
UsB drive, erased with single write of zeroes, partitioned to journaled mac format. Partition about 650gb for MBAIR has 500gB SSD OEM.
Rstart MBAIR pressing command R , follow process choosing EXTERNAL drive to install Yosemite
and after overnight wait for the disk prep process zeroing, now at the point of having installed and asking for my applied. Do I give it or keep it 100% clean while I check the basic install works...... I elect for no sign in..... I want to know if the USB based system works and can reboot. Restarting... I altered password so I can tell which system I have booted from... 70 seconds to the password box....5 seconds from password to main screen...
SO now what? Install apps? So many. The ones I forget will plague me for days or weeks. Or transfer from time machine like its a new machine?
TTime to post this and see if anyone is around with some experience
AApologies for the typing, my iPad is not behaving ideally...

can't edit the above and my ipad would not allow any responses to the post edit dialogues so to continue with what I hope does not become an epic
my name is anthony, please ignore the handle (old long story - maybe one day I can easily fix it)
my first choice was to load mail.app enter my apple i.d., then system prefs icloud and tick the keychain box. There followed repetitive "certificates do not match - choose trust all, around 30 times over once for each email account (I have many). Also enter system password, note to self next time make system password blank for install process. Doing this now for the rest of the process. Yes I am sure (response to a prompt)
So, email has re-installed all (?) of my email accounts with settings (thanks to icloud methinks) saving a huge amount of time compared to past re-installs (thank you icloud) and downloaded 42,000 messages (nearly all imap so as to sync across devices) - I feel a degree of relief already and do not feel that terrible stress feeling when all I have is a backup and no original working system (which is of course still on the MBA's SSD).
When asked about time machine targets: ignore/cancel so as not to interfere with original MBA backups.
Next (concurrently in fact) install Chrome to get back all my bookmarks (thousands). I occasionally try Safari, but struggle because of my time investment in Chrome and it doesn't integrate, imports are not at all the same thing.)
So let's try a restart and compare the timings. ... this is without any apps being reinstalled (as opposed to browser)...

  • Illustrator 2014 crash on yosemite fresh install

    Hi all,
I've a big big problem. After installing Yosemite Illustrator crashs and I can't start it.
I've done a fresh install of Yosemite, I've updated Jva to 8.5 I've uninstalled and the installed illustrator.
But none of this solution worked for me.
    Can you help me?

  • Install applications after install of Yosemite 10.10.2

I erased my HD with disk utility and then did a fresh install of Yosemite. Now when I try to install the programs I had previously, legal/licensed programs or even just a basic install like Firefox downloaded from the Internet, the install fails. The installer eventually goes to not responding in Activity Monitor. I never get prompted to agree to AUPs or anything. I was able to install iPhoto from the App Store, but all other install attempts for things like Adobe Reader, Java etc.. all fail.
I was able to install Firefox and Photomatix Pro by "dragging to the Application" folder.
I did notice in System settings - Security and Privacy that Apps downloaded from is set to App Store and Identified Developers, this should be good. But I also clicked the lock icon and it just says Authenticating. I should be prompted to put in the administrators password.
What is stopping me from installing basic applications like Adobe Reader?

thank you for the quick reply Glenn.
I did do the permissions repair, but failed to restart. I should have known that needed to be done. Thanks again!
