How to do a new lion install on mac mini

I bought a used mac mini with Lion 10.7.2 on it.
I would like to a complete re-install to mack sure there is nothing left from the privious owner.

My information is from the Apple SLA's (additionally, there have been other posts regarding the same problem). It may be unfair, but that is what Apple's rules are. They are very specific regarding the sale/transfer of a Mac with Lion on it. Anyone buying or selling a used Mac needs to be aware of these rules.
If he had purchased a Mac with 10.6 and the disks, it would be easy: a) the software license allows the transfer of the OS and b) he could simply use the disk to erase and reinstall.
You can download the SLA's here:
http://www.apple.com/legal/sla/
Pertinent excerpts (from Lion SLA):
B. License from Mac App Store or on Physical Media. If you obtained a license for the AppleSoftware from the Mac App Store or on Apple-branded physical media, then subject to theterms and conditions of this License and as permitted by the Mac App Store Usage Rules setforth in the App Store Terms and Conditions (http://www.apple.com/legal/itunes/ww/) (“UsageRules”), you are granted a limited, non-transferable, non-exclusive license:
to download, install, use and run for personal, non-commercial use, one (1) copy of theApple Software directly on each Apple-branded computer running Mac OS X Snow Leopardor Mac OS X Snow Leopard Server (“Mac Computer”) that you own or control;
K. Migration of Existing Software. If you use Setup/Migration Assistant to transfer softwarefrom one Apple-branded computer to another Apple-branded computer, please rememberthat continued use of the original copy of the software may be prohibited once a copy hasbeen transferred to another computer, unless you already have a licensed copy of suchsoftware on both computers. You should check the relevant software license agreements forapplicable terms and conditions. Third party software and services may not be compatiblewith this Apple Software and installation of this Apple Software may affect the availability andusability of such third party software or services.
3. Transfer.
A. If you obtained the Apple Software preinstalled on Apple-branded hardware, you maymake a one-time permanent transfer of all of your license rights to the Apple Software (in itsoriginal form as provided by Apple) to another party, provided that: the Apple Software istransferred together with your Apple-branded hardware; (ii) the transfer must include all of theApple Software, including all its component parts, printed materials and this License; (iii) youdo not retain any copies of the Apple Software, full or partial, including copies stored on acomputer or other storage device; and (iv) the party receiving the Apple Software reads andagrees to accept the terms and conditions of this License. For purposes of this License, ifApple provides an update (e.g., version 10.7 to 10.7.1) to the Apple Software, the update isconsidered part of the Apple Software and may not be transferred separately from the pre-update version of the Apple Software.
B. If you obtained your license to the Apple Software from the Mac App Store or on Apple-branded physical media, it is not transferable. If you sell your Apple-branded hardware to athird party, you must remove the Apple Software from the Apple-branded hardware beforedoing so, and you may restore your system to the version of the Apple operating systemsoftware that originally came with your Apple hardware (the “Original Apple OS”) andpermanently transfer the Original Apple OS together with your Apple hardware, provided that:(i) the transfer must include all of the Original Apple OS, including all its component parts, printed materials and its license; (ii) you do not retain any copies of the Original Apple OS, fullor partial, including copies stored on a computer or other storage device; and (iii) the partyreceiving the Original Apple OS reads and agrees to accept the terms and conditions of theOriginal Apple OS license.
Using the recovery partition automatically directs the computer to the app store where the machine ID is on record and you have to enter your Apple ID which - in this scenario - won't match. I've read some posts here already where people have tried to do this and it did not work; Software Update did not work either (presumably because the machine and Apple ID's were not "on record"). My take is that it is Apple's new policy to limit software piracy (but that is just my humble opinion): you buy a cheap downloadable software license and it "expires" when you get rid of the machine, so the new owner has to buy another cheap license.
As for my testing this scenario - quite obviously I am not able to since I do not have a used machine I just purchased. Here is one of the recent similar threads to this one:

(there have been more, but with my limited time this morning, that is all I could find with the not-so-well functioning search feature here).

Brooks lansing if you create a new Administrator account does the same issue occur?  If so then it is likely that there is a file permission failure and file permissions have been set for the existing Users instead of the groups they belong to.

Reboot holding down the Command and R keys.  This will get you in to the Recovery partition.  From there you can reinstall the entire OS.  Please note, Server.app will not be included in the reinstall.  You will need to log into your App store account to download it.

  • I have Lion installed on my Mini but it runs Snow Leopard

I have Lion installed on my Mini -- Macmini3,1   Processor Name:    Intel Core 2 Duo   Processor Speed:    2.53 GHz,  but I keep booting into Snow Leopard. I can't seem to remove Lion or repurchase it.I originally bought Lion for my iMAC. No problems there. I use the same Apple ID from both machines. I would like to run Lion on my mini. Help?

You need to launch the Install Mac OS X Lion.app and install it. BTW, make a copy and save it somewhere, since the dumb installer deletes itself, necessitating wasting time and energy DLing again.

I've never done that, but I don't see why it wouldn't. There is no verification or authentication keys in the installer.
If you need 20+ licenses*, then you might take a look at the volume licensing: http://www.apple.com/mac/volume-licensing/
It describes the same process I described.
    * I think 20 is the minimum. Not sure, though.

how do i reformat my hard drive on mac mini late 2011 with yosemite before selling my mac

You can't legally sell or give away that computer with Yosemite installed.
Before you sell or give away your computer, in addition to the steps listed in this support article, take these steps:
    1. Run Apple Diagnostics or the Apple Hardware Test. The buyer will do this (or he should), and you don't want to be surprised by the results.
    2. Reset the PRAM and the SMC, which might contain personal information.
    3. If you set a firmware password, remove it by running Firmware Password Utility in Recovery mode.
    4. If you activated FileVault in OS X 10.7 or later, turn it off.
    5. If you use Boot Camp, the partition must be deleted.
    6. If you created any other data partitions on the internal drive, remove them in Disk Utility.
    7. If the machine has an internal hard drive, erase the one remaining data partition with the option to zero out data. An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.
You can't legally or practically transfer any software downloaded from the Mac App Store to the new owner of the machine, even if it was free. That includes OS X, so if you upgraded to OS X 10.7 or later, you must reinstall an older OS, either from the installation media, if applicable, or by starting up in Internet Recovery mode (option-command-R at the startup chime.) If you installed from physical media, deliver those to the new owner.
If you're selling the machine, or donating it in working order, and it originally shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, then you have the option of installing either from the discs that came with it or from a retail Snow Leopard disc (which you must then transfer to the buyer.) The buyer should understand that if he doesn't get the original discs from you, he won't get the bundled iLife applications or the Apple Hardware Test. Replacements for the original discs can be ordered from Apple.
The new owner will have to redownload any software that came from the App Store, including OS X upgrades, under his or her Apple ID. If you ever updated the bundled iLife applications (Garage Band, iMovie, and iPhoto) through the App Store, you can't transfer those either. The buyer will have to purchase them.
Remove the machine from your list of registered products. If it's still covered by an AppleCare Protection Plan, transfer the coverage to the new owner by following the instructions in the AppleCare Terms and Conditions (under the heading "Transfer of Plan.")

  • Lion OS on Mac Mini Server?

I recieved a Mac mini server from my brother with Snow leapord server installed.  I have a copy of regular Lion that I would like to install as I dont need the server capabilities.  Every time I try it tells me that I need to buy the lion server part from the app store.  Some of the other posts I've found basically say you shouldn't have bought a Mini Server if thats not what you need, but thats not a solution.
Does anyone know how to install a regular copy of Lion on a Mac Mini Server without buying the server app which I would not use anyway?  Thanks for the help.
    Ben.

Can you wipe it and install Snow Leopard on it? That should give you an easy upgrade path to Lion. That would suck if having Snow Leopard server locked you in to only a Lion server upgrade.
When you say you have a copy of Lion what do you mean? You have it on a flash drive? Its download only but there are ways you can burn it to DVD or install on a flash drive.

  • How to record my voice by headphone on mac mini

    Hi all,
How to record my voice by headphone on mac mini. The headphone have a microphone. It can record on window 7, but on mac mini, it's not working.
I don't know why. Please help me.
    Thanks.

    Open Quicktime Player
    File Menu: New Audio Recording....
However... if the headphone/microphone combination has two 3.5mm jack plugs (pink and green) then the microphone output (pink) is "mic.level" - which is TOO QUIET for the audio input on a Mac, which is expecting the much stronger "line.level" signal strength.
Solutions: get a microphone pre-amplifier between the mic and the Mac (not cheap); or a different microphone with a USB interface.

  • I upgraded to Lion on my Mac Mini and I'm wondering if I have to pay 29.99 again to upgrade to Lion on my Mac book pro?

I upgraded to Lion on my Mac mini and I'm wondering if I have to pay 29.99 to upgrade it on my Macbook pro also. Or since both computers are registered under the same account, is there a way to share the program?

You can download it from the mac app store again on the other computer free of charge. Just go to purchases in the mac app store on the other computer and log in with the same account you used to purchase lion. Then you should see lion listed as a purchase along with a gray box that says INSTALL.

how to run the Hardware test on a Mac mini 2015 ?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
New Macs come with Apple Diagnostics instead of Apple Hardware Test, but their purpose is the same: check that your Mac's hardware is working properly. See -> https://support.apple.com/kb/PH18765?locale=en_US
To run it, you only have to hold down the D key while your Mac is starting up, and follow the steps.
