How to do a re-install of Mac OS 10.5 LEOPARD??

Saturday (28 Feb 2009) I had a smooth install of Leopard over 10.4.11 TIGER. I'd been practising for 10 months on other Macs!
BUT BUT-- then within 24 hours I have a frozen / inactive menu bar-- either the menu doesn't switch when I switch programs; or the program sitting 3-15+ minutes suddenly has a frozen Menu Bar when I return to my Mac...
So I'm wondering if I re-install but this time do an install/archive?? How to do that, use customize in the set-up via the installation DVD?
I have at least 15 shareware and other programs that I'll then have to reinstall myself one-by-one; but if this solves the FROZEN MENU BAR problem, fine.
Any guidance / assistance on how best to do this to give me the best chance of a clean install. I really don't want to wipe the HD clean since then when I bring my files back via FireWire, I'm sure some system/other files will come back as well. So I hope install-archive is the best.
Comments welcome!

I am wondering if there are documented cases of people having menu bars freeze / become inactive in Leopard. I mean many people must have shareware and such like I do-- and Leopard has been out since about Oct 2007 or so-- one would think this would have been seen and solved by now.
Any add-on software that enhances the user interface or materially changes application behavior should be researched carefully to see if it relies on what is commonly known as a "haxie" -- basically, any software that inserts itself into the OS via an undocumented or prohibited entry point ("API") or uses a provided API in a way it was not designed to support. This is not easy to do, in part because a number of developers insist that their software does not do this when it clearly does, often by installing a haxie in addition to their own product. (I suppose this is the basis for the "it's not a haxie" claim, since the product itself isn't one.)
You cannot rely on a product's popularity or rating for this -- in fact, some of the most popular add-ons rely on haxies to work.
You should do this because in effect, an OS running any of these add-ons is no longer the OS Apple provides or supports but instead a hybrid (some would say an adulteration) that is supported in part by the maker of the add-on(s). This obviously complicates getting effective support, especially when more than one is present. It also can lead to problems with stability that are hard to diagnose & even security issues.
If you feel you must include these things in your system, it is very important that you make sure you use the latest version -- one indicator of this kind of software is a very large number of updates, since any change Apple makes to its provided OS is very likely to require a change to it as well. (Often, the update to the add-on is accompanied by a note from its author that it patches around a 'severe' but usually only vaguely specified bug in Apple's OS.) If in doubt, completely disable or uninstall the add-ons before you apply an OS update, since their presence can sometimes interfere with the OS updating itself -- after all, it isn't the OS Apple provides anymore so it should be no surprise that it may not behave as expected during this most delicate of processes.
It also should be no surprise that all the problems these things can cause have not been "solved" by now -- every time the OS is updated the process starts all over again.

  • What are the minimum hardware requirements to install both MAC OS X Snow Leopard and Windows on a Mac

    Hi,
I want to install both MAC OS X Snow Leopard and WINDOWS on a same PC. Is it possible..then mention the minimum Hardware support to install both Operating Systems on a PC. I am waiting for relevant reply from Apple Support Team.
                                            Thank You.

I am waiting for relevant reply from Apple Support Team.
Then you'll be waiting a long time. This is a user to user support site hosted by Apple. The Apple Support Team doesn't respond to posts here.
For Snow Leopard, you need an Apple computer with an Intel processor of any flavor. Here are the specs from the Apple Store:
    System Requirements
Mac computer with an Intel processor
    1GB of memory
    5GB of available disk space
    DVD drive for installation
You'd have to contact Microsoft to find out what specs its OS requires, but I imagine the above would cover it.
Also note that Snow Leopard is only licensed to run on Apple branded equipment.

  • How can I find out if my mac mini running snow leopard can be upgraded to mountain lion?

I have a mac mini with sufficient ram for the mountain lion OS however, I am unable to determine if the machine was created in early 2009.  Is there a way to make sure my machine will take the upgrade without purchasing the operating system first?

Upgrade Paths to Snow Leopard, Lion, and/or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard — Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service — this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion — System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) —
                 Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 2,1 or later

             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.

  • How do you perform clean install on mac?

I just purchased a MBP with Snow Leopard OS and I'm completely mac noob. I want to know how to perform clean install (erase and install) on a mac. Not that I want to do it now. Just want to learn the proper procedures earlier coz this is very beneficial in the future. thanks

    FYI
I know that you know that there are two kind of installs for Leo: upgrade and erase and install. In principle, there would be little difference between the two. Many here say that upgrading, versus erasing and installing, is the superior procedure. Others feel differently. I say just do what you prefer. My bet is that percentage-wise those getting good installs from an erase and install, particularly if all apps are reinstalled, rather than migrated, is higher than for upgrade--but probably not appreciably higher.
The processes leading to the final outcome should lead to a good outcome in either case. But, things can go wrong either way. I am not going to try to elaborate much on the specific ways that things could go wrong either way. But, for the most part, they would have to do with the way migration works and the migration technique used (if used), in the case of erase and install, and the existence of problems in the system existing prior to installation in the case of an upgrade.

  • Help with CF9 Standard Install and Mac OS Server (Snow Leopard Server)

    Hello,
I recently purchased a mac mini server (with snow leopard server) and will be using it to host my CF9 applications.  This install is WAY different than the install needed on a windows machine.  I tried to install it once and somehow hosed up Apache and now I can't even get it to start up (apache).  So I am having the colo company to do a full restore of the server and I took notes on the Mac Server install and below is the questions I have.
1.) Since Snow Leopard Server comes with Apache webserver, it is what CF wants to use.  This is fine, I just need to know where these things are...
It is asking for the Configuration Directory:  I'm guessing it is /private/etc/apache2 ? Right or Wrong???
2.) It is asking for Directory and file name of server binary:  It currently defaults to /usr/sbin/httpd  is this right or should I point it to another directory?
3.) It is asking for Directory and file name of server script: It currently defaults to /usr/sbin/apachectl  is this right or should I point it to another directory?
It also wants the location where I can place the CFIDE.  Can I place this anywhere I wish or is there a preferred location to point this to?
and finally, I have CF9 Standard, so on the mac server should I install it as a server configuration (self contained instance) or Enterprise Multiserver config.  I was reading online that its better to install as an Enterprise Multiserver setup, but I don't know if this will work for me since I'm useing the standard edition.
Please Help ANYONE, if you have mac os experience and installing CF9 onto a mac server
    Thanks

I have been getting this exact same problem.  CF installer is somehow writing some invalid information into the httpd.conf file.  I was able to replace the httpd.conf file with the default one, and was able to go through the webconnector process again and (sometimes randomly) it works.  I also spent about 4 hours on the line with adobe CF support and made no progress beyond what I'll post here .
To answer your questions about file locations:
    /private/etc/apache2/ for the httpd.conf files
/usr/sbin/ for both the apachectl and the httpd binaries
Although I'm able to get past where you are, and it seems to work correctly, Immediately upon adding a new site via server admin it all breaks.  Coldfusion then will only work if I manually go to a cfm document.  For example:  http://example.com/ will give me the raw text from the (default index) index.cfm file.  But typing http://example.com/index.cfm works.
I am lost here as well.  After 4 hours on the phone with adobe support I would have hoped it would be an easy fix.  I've completely nuked and reinstalled the server from scratch with the exact same results both times.
Does anyone have the slightest clue about what may be going on here?

  • NetInstall image not installing on Mac Pros from Snow Leopard server

Using the System Image Utility, I created a NetRestore image from the Mac Pro machine that was configured in the way that we wanted it (applications, etc.). I copied this image to the server (Server HD 3), and configured in Library/Netboot/NetBootSP0. The image is in Base Image.nbi, and I have NetBoot set up in serveradmin. I have this set up in the images tab in NetBoot:
    Default is checked;
    Image Name: Base Image;
    Enable is checked;
Diskless is not (we're wanting to 'restore' this image on all 17 MacPros)
    Index is 2323;
    Arch is Intel;
    Protocol is NFS.
    Comment box info:
    Storage Volume: Server HD 3
Kind: Mac OS X NetInstall (Intel)
    Language: default
Description: NetRestore of Mac OS X 10.6.2 (10C2234) Volume.
    Type: NFS.
When I go to one of the other computers, go through system preferences and select the "Base Image" to restart from, I get a gray screen; then the globe flashes, and then the machine will go to the local hard drive to start up.
The reason I went to a NetRestore image was because the system image utility would not create a netinstall (greyed out) from a volume.
Is there something I am missing here?

So glad its you Mr. Hoffman - your guides are most helpful - thank you so much for what you do.
I did some digging and found out that since im running CS4 and that it trys to run on 64 bit mode but my Lion system and most folks systems I guess are in 32 bit mode - i had to down load some 32 bit Adobe Unit Types from Adobe and replace the ones on my system - restart - and bingo - im no longer getting those errors - see this link where i found this work around:
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/516/cpsid_51615.html
That fix cleared a lot of the junk that adobe was doing but i am still getting error 1101 - see below
11/26/11 2:36:37.298 PM opendirectoryd: peer appears to be running Mac OS X 10.6 or earlier
    11/26/11 2:36:37.298 PM opendirectoryd: got error 1101
Any idea what this is ?

  • Can I install Original Mac OS X Snow Leopard  on my PC/laptop?

    Same as my topic~

You can provided it meets certain criteria and you have the skills to run all sorts of black source software to do it.
Apple will not hold your hand and neither will we,  although I likely would if I could,  you'll just have to ask your question elsewhere sorry.
I can't tell you where, but if you look hard enough I'm sure you'll find what you looking for.
It's not easy to install and it's very risky.
It would be much MUCH easier to install a Linux clone that LOOKS LIKE OS X than it would be to install OS X on a PC laptop, even installing Linux isn't for the weak.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pl-sIyRkXVo
But of course you don't have as much software choice as OS X and Windows, with Linux, but it's nearly all free and decent for the basics.
    http://www.oslike.se/
(tip: go the 10.10 upgrade to 11.04 route)
You can find out more about installing Linux at the Ubuntu forums (MacBuntu is just a desktop theme, like a shell)

  • I have this iMac late 2006 and I want to install the Mac OS X Lion

    Hello,
I want to install Mac os X lion, (not mountain lion) on my iMac Late 2006 , but it is no longer available in the mac app store. How can I do to install the Mac OS X Lion on  my computer?
The thing is that i was hoping the the mountain lion was compatible with my iMac, so is there a way i can still get the Mac OS X lion?

Apple for some dumb reason removed it from the App store, so you now have to call them and ask for it.  I also have a Late 2006 Mac Pro and luckily I took the plung awhile ago and bought it from the App store.  Since they cut off so many machines still being used they should have left Lion in the store.  Any 2006-2007 Mac Pro and any other Mac that has a video card that doesn't have 64b drivers cannot go to Mountain Lion.

  • Do I need Internet Connection to install Mac OS X Snow Leopard?

    Hi,
I am going to install new mac os x snow leopard, but I don't have any internet connection at the moment and waiting for broadband service providers to provide me broadband.
I am just wondering that if I need internet connection to install this os or not?? should I wait for broadband connection or not??
    any help will be appreciated.
    Thanks.

*Some features require a compatible Internet service provider*
...which just means that you can't use Mail, for example, unless you've got internet service and an e-mail account. This has nothing to do with the installer.
Wait until you have a broadband internet connection. One of the setup guides needs to connect in order to set your time zone.
...which is not strictly necessary, since you can easily set it manually.
A more important issue is that, without an internet connection, the installer won't be able to check Apple's servers for an updated list of incompatible software. This is not strictly necessary, but it's a good idea.

I have a 20MB ipod which has windows software on it. It is very hard to load songs onto as I can only see the ICON on the desktop and not in itunes and this way they don't seem to properly mount! I have a 12" ibook that I connect it to. I can't seem to follow how one is supposed to wipe the Windows OS (or whatever) off the ipod and install the Mac one ?!?!? Am I trying to do the impossible? A step-by-step answer would be soooooo appreciated.
    12" ibook   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

Information on the iPod not appearing in iTunes is available in this article. To reformat the iPod for Mac, open a new Finder window and click the Applications icon in the sidebar; from here, open Utilities and then iPod Software Updater. Locate the most recent version of the iPod updater inside, open it, and click the Restore button with the iPod connected. Doing this will change the iPod into the Mac format and erase everything currently on it.
