How to do application failover?

I'm using weblogic cluster and oracle http server as loadbalancer.
As we know: "mod_wl_ohs only support container level failover and NOT application level failover. mod_wl_ohs continues to route requests to a down application as long as the managed server is up and running."
So how I can protect a application too?

Hi,
Application level failover can be achieved by using session replication across the cluster.
By using oracle http server(webserver) you are doing only load balancing but not failover.
The below snippet in weblogic.xml should helps you
<wls:session-descriptor>
<wls:persistent-store-type>replicated_if_clustered</wls:persistent-store-type>
</wls:session-descriptor>

Thanks & Regards,
Murali.

  • Does Weblogic12c support Application Failover ? If yes, then how does Weblogic12c detect an application failure (OutOfMemoryException)?

    Hi all,
    Need help to setup High Availability at my workplace, can somebody please tell that Weblogic12c support Application Failover ?
    If yes, then how does Weblogic12c detect an application failure (OutOfMemoryException)?
    WebLogic Server - General@

    Hi there user,
    you can achieve HA in different levels:
    1. On a single machine - here you need to set up nodemanager. When started by nodemanager, any server failures will be detected and the nodemanager will try to restart it. OOME is an exception thrown by the JVM and the server state should go FAILED at some point then the NM will try to restart it. Nodemanager is the simplest HA solution you can and must implement for production environment;
    2. On redundant machine - you can configure WLS clustering, but you will need more complex environment, i.e. you will need a load balancer in front of the cluster to reverse proxy the requests. This scenario is can also use nodemanager to control the WLS instances on each machine
    3. Cluster with server/service migration - the most complex scenario where in cases of machine failure the WLS cluster can "relocate" resources (services and whole severs) to spare machines.
    In your case OOME should cause the JVM respectively WLS to be unresponsive, hence the nodemanager will detect this at some point and will try to restart the WLS.
    Hope this helps,
    A.

  • New Note 790189.1 - Oracle Clusterware and Application Failover Management

    Hi all,
    please, note the newly created Metalink Note 790189.1 - Oracle Clusterware and Application Failover Management if you want to use Oracle Clusterware as a general purpose cluster solution. The note intends to clarify and to explain the current situation in regards to the supportability of applications managed by Oracle Clusterware.
    In environments not including Oracle RAC, Oracle Clusterware still provides the level of high availability that is commonly known to be achievable for applications and databases managed in (failover) cluster environments. These environments can include Oracle Single Instance Databases, Oracle Application Servers, Oracle Enterprise Manager components, third party databases, or any other kind of application. (For more information on Oracle Clusterware 11g in general, please, refer to [Oracle Clusterware homepage|http://otn.oracle.com/clusterware].)
    Metalink Note 790189.1 - Oracle Clusterware and Application Failover Management is tightly integrated with the information on application failover management available on the [Oracle Clusterware homepage|http://otn.oracle.com/clusterware] and discusses typical questions like
    * Terminology
    * Script supportability and preconfigured agents
    * How to prove that action scripts work outside of Oracle Clusterware
    * Supportability of the Oracle Database Single Instance example scripts
    * How do I know whether a certain script is supported as a preconfigured agent?
    Metalink Note 790189.1, however, does not change the level of support that has been introduced for these kind of configurations as of Oracle Database 10g Release 2: "Generally, Oracle does not support action scripts in the strict terms of supporting individual code fragments. Oracle fully supports the integration of individual action scripts proven to run outside of Oracle Clusterware into the Oracle Clusterware management stack. Supported operations therefore typically involve crs_* commands such as crs_profile, crs_register, crs_setperm, crs_getperm, crs_start, crs_stop, and crs_relocate invoked on custom resources. If actions scripts are used as part of a preconfigured agent, Oracle or the application provider who provides the agent will support the integration of this agent, while only the application provider will provide support for the individual action scripts."
    Just for your information. Thanks,
    Markus

    not meant to be a question - rather an announcement.

  • How do the application servers connect the new database after failing over from primary DB to standby DB

    How do the application servers connect the new database after failing over from primary DB to standby DB?
    We have setup a DR environment with a standalone Primary server and a standalone Physical Standby server on RHEL Linux 6.4. Now our application team would like to know:
    When the primary DB server is crashed, the standy DB server will takeover the role of primary DB through the DataGuard fast failover. As the applications are connected by the primary DB IP before,currently the physical DB is used as a different IP or listener. If this is happened, they need to stop their application servers and re-configure their connection so the they coonect the new DB server, they cannot tolerate these workaround.
    Whether does oracle have the better solution for this so that the application can automatically know the role's transition and change to the new IP without re-confige any connection and shutdown their application?
    Oracle support provides us the answer as following:
    ==================================================================
    Applications connected to a primary database can transparently failover to the new primary database upon an Oracle Data Guard role transition. Integration with Fast Application Notification (FAN) provides fast failover for integrated clients.
    After a failover, the broker publishes Fast Application Notification (FAN) events. These FAN events can be used in the following ways:
    Applications can use FAN without programmatic changes if they use one of these Oracle integrated database clients: Oracle Database JDBC, Oracle Database Oracle Call Interface (OCI), and Oracle Data Provider for .NET ( ODP.NET). These clients can be configured for Fast Connection Failover (FCF) to automatically connect to a new primary database after a failover.
    JAVA applications can use FAN programmatically by using the JDBC FAN application programming interface to subscribe to FAN events and to execute event handling actions upon the receipt of an event.
    FAN server-side callouts can be configured on the database tier.
    FAN events are published using Oracle Notification Services (ONS) and Oracle Streams Advanced Queuing (AQ).
    =======================================================================================
    Who has the experience and the related documentation or other solutions? we don't have the concept of about FAN.
    Thank very much in advance.

    Hi mesbeg,
    Thanks alot.
    For example, there is an application JBOSS server connecting the DB, we just added another datasource and put the standby IP into the configuration file except adding a service on DB side like this following:
            <subsystem xmlns="urn:jboss:domain:datasources:1.0">
            <datasources>
                    <datasource jta="false" jndi-name="java:/jdbc/idserverDatasource" pool-name="IDServerDataSource" enabled="true" use-java-context="true">
                        <connection-url>jdbc:oracle:thin:@<primay DB IP>:1521:testdb</connection-url>
                        <connection-url>jdbc:oracle:thin:@<standby DB IP>:1521:testdb</connection-url>
                        <driver>oracle</driver>
                        <pool>
                            <min-pool-size>2</min-pool-size>
                            <max-pool-size>10</max-pool-size>
                            <prefill>true</prefill>
                        </pool>
                        <security>
                            <user-name>TEST_USER</user-name>
                            <password>Password1</password>
                        </security>
                        <validation>
                            <valid-connection-checker class-name="org.jboss.jca.adapters.jdbc.extensions.oracle.OracleValidConnectionChecker"/>
                            <validate-on-match>false</validate-on-match>
                            <background-validation>false</background-validation>
                            <use-fast-fail>false</use-fast-fail>
                            <stale-connection-checker class-name="org.jboss.jca.adapters.jdbc.extensions.oracle.OracleStaleConnectionChecker"/>
                            <exception-sorter class-name="org.jboss.jca.adapters.jdbc.extensions.oracle.OracleExceptionSorter"/>
                        </validation>
                    </datasource>
                    <drivers>
                        <driver name="oracle" module="com.oracle.jdbc">
                            <xa-datasource-class>oracle.jdbc.OracleDriver</xa-datasource-class>
                        </driver>
                    </drivers>
                </datasources>
            </subsystem>
    If the failover is occurred, the JBOSS will automatically be pointed to the standby DB. Additional actions are not needed.

  • Data Guard Application Failover

    Hi,
    We've setup a physical standby database on 11.2.0.1.
    I'd request for opinions on how well to manage application fail-over when we switchover/fail over the database. The application connects to the database through TNS name resolution.
    Some people have suggested we edit the tns entry for the application server and point it to a virtual hostname, which will resolve to one IP address, then change this IP address only on the DNS to point to the new primary during switchover. But this looks to have challenges since the service names for the primary and standy instances are different, so the tns entry has to be modified.
    Any suggestions on best application failover?
    dula

    Dan,
    You are most welcome to OTN
    I have a question regarding Active Data Guard and any potential outage that might be encounted in a failover or switchover.Switchover/Failover wont happen without your interaction.
    If you configure FSFO with protection mode(Ex: Max Availability)
    Read-Only application is accessing Active Data Guard database on standby. Would there be any outage if the standby were made the primary ?What outage? If standby made to primary(failover) then you may less very minor data based on how redo transport you are configuring. if you are using ARCH then the lost would only data+changes what ever in Archive log file, If you using LGWR then its very very less. So recommended to use redo transport as LGWR
    I have assumed no, but there is a debate in my office that there would be a small outage due to change in roles. We are using broker also.If you change role, then there would be no outage.

  • [Forum FAQ] How to deploy applications remotely

    In some situations, we may need some ways to install applications remotely, here we summarize four general ways to deploy applications.
    1. Using PowerShell to install
    We can use the Win32_Product class to install Windows Installer packages, remotely or locally, so in this way, we can use powerShell command to invoke this function. For example, to install the NewPackage.msi package located in the network
    share \\AppServ\remote on the remote computer PC01, type the following command at the Windows PowerShell prompt:
    (Get-WMIObject -ComputerName PC01 -List | Where-Object -FilterScript {$_.Name -eq "Win32_Product"}).Install(\\AppSrv\remote\NewPackage.msi)
    In same method, we can use the following command to deploy .exe application:
    (Get-WMIObject -ComputerName PC01 -List | Where-Object -FilterScript {$_.Name -eq "Win32_Process"}).Create(\\AppSrv\remote\NewPackage.exe)
    Note: The applications should use Windows Installer technology.
    2. PsExec tool: one of sysinternals utilities
    PsExec's most powerful uses include launching interactive command-prompts on remote systems and remote-enabling tools like IpConfig that otherwise do not have the ability to show information about remote systems. So, we can use this feature to install our
    applications, in fact this is similar with PowerShell methods, the only difference is that PsExec is a comprehensive tool. Similarly, we can use the following command to achieve our goal:
    psexec \\PC01  cmd /c  "\\AppSrv\remote\NewPackage.msi" /quiet /norestart
    Note: we can also use PsExec tool to install Microsoft Update file (.msu)
    psexec \\PC01  -s -h -d wusa.exe  "\\AppSrv\remote\NewPackage.msu" /quiet /norestart
    3. Group Policy Software Installation
    In domain environment, this method is very useful to deploy our software. It only supports MSI package for deployment.
    We can choose assign a program to user or computer. If you assign the program to a user, it is installed when the user logs on to the computer. When the user first runs the program, the installation is completed. If you assign the program to a computer,
    it is installed when the computer starts, and it is available to all users who log on to the computer. When a user first runs the program, the installation is completed.
    You can get the installation information of group policy software installation in event viewer, including success or failure.
    4. System Center Configuration Manger
    The Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager software distribution feature provides a set of tools and resources that help you create and manage packages and advertisements used to distribute software to client resources within your enterprise. This
    is a comprehensive suit for deployment.

  • How to use application managed entity manager in EJB?

    I finish reading The EntityManager Interface in JEE tutorial.
    I know I can use container manager entity manager in EJB, but I want to explore how to use application managed entity manager in EJB.
    Can I use application managed entity manager in EJB (container management JTA transaction is used)? Where do I should close entity manager if can?
    The following is an example from JEE tutorial, but didn't find where to calose entity manager. and can I create mutiple EntityManagerFactory objects and Entity Manager objects to use them in a JTA transaction?
    @PersistenceUnit
    EntityManagerFactory emf;
    EntityManager em;
    @Resource
    UserTransaction utx;
    em = emf.createEntityManager();
    try {
      utx.begin();
      em.persist(SomeEntity);
      em.merge(AnotherEntity);
      em.remove(ThirdEntity);
      utx.commit();
    } catch (Exception e) {
      utx.rollback();

    Seems like a very poor example, the whole power of EJBs is to use Container Managed Transactions so you don't NEED to manage the transaction and the entity manager yourself. What you posted is code I would expect in a non-JEE application, or in a piece of code which requires fine-tuned transaction boundaries such as batched data importing logic.
    If I were you I'd research JPA in steps.
    a) learn about JPA as an API outside of the scope of EJBs (recommended reading: the book 'Pro JPA 2')
    b) learn about Container Managed Transactions in EJBs
    c) learn about Bean Managed Transactions in EJBs
    Right now you're rushing into c). I can understand that it raises many question marks at this point.

  • How does Facebook application utilize Blackberry push based architecture?

    Hi Friends,
    I have posted this message in Blackberry Java Development forum. But was told that "if you are not RIM you will not be able to use the push-architecture with BIS".
    Here goes the actual message. Please provide your valuable inputs.
    I am developing an Blackberry client application which will be similar to Facebook application for Blackberry.
    Since, this application can be  download by any blackberry user who would be subscribed to different BES or BIS, how will the push based architecture of BB work here.
    See my previous post 'Push content to devices on different BES' (http://supportforums.blackberry.com/rim/board/message?board.id=java_dev&message.id=3196&jump=true#M3196), which says that push will work through BES.
    If that is the case,
    How does the FaceBook application for Blackberry work?
    Users who download the Fackebook application will definetly not be on the same BES or might be on BIS as well.
    Then how will Facebook application receive notificatios and messages instantly using blackberry's push architecture?
    (http://www.blackberry.com/news/press/2007/pr-24_10_2007-01.shtml)
    Does RIM provide any framework or support for developing facebook like applications which would utilize push architecture irrespective of BES or BIS?
    Thanks,
    Suresh.

    Facebook doesn't use the BlackBerry network, it uses the standard data network.  If you're on BES, that typically is routed through your BES server.  If you're not on a BES, it will use BIS.
    I don't believe the application is a "push" application either - it's more likely a real time IM client.

  • How to delete application deployed in Run Application Only mode?

    I have exported/imported an application (Run Application Only mode) from one DB instance to another.
    As a developer, I cannot see the application in Application Builder in the target instance. This is as intended because changes should only be made on the source (development) instance.
    After testing, there may be errors to correct. The application is not going to be a new version, it is going to be corrected on the source instance. Without creating a new version of the application on the source instance, what steps does the HTML DB admin take on the target instance to delete the application so the application can be imported again?
    Thanks,
    Kelly

    Thank you Scott. I missed the help text to the side of the install page that explained how an existing application is deleted and replaced.
    The tool provided the prompt page, Confirm Replace Application, before proceeding with the install.

  • E-Rec : How to assign applications to requisitions?

    Hello Experts,
    We have just started blue-printing of E-Rec and I am successful creating a requisition from Recruiter's page. I am just concerned how to assign applications to a requisition as search doesnt work being a very new system. I was trying to create an application using link "Create External Applications" from Recruiter's login page. Please guide.
    Additional details: We have ECC and E-Rec on different box with EhP5.
    Thanks and regards,
    SAP E-Rec Guy

    You can always search for postings using a reference code - TREX and the indexes do not need to be setup for that to work.  The create internal / external applications link is really used for a recruiter to create an application on behalf of a candidate.  You could always just register a new external candidate and search for the job posting using the reference code and apply that way.
