How to do manual iPad update???

My in-laws are fully dependent on their iPad to the point that the laptop they own very rarely gets turned on. This causes a separate issue to the one raised in this post in that when I visited them last week their iPad had not been backed up and synced for around 6 months because they had not plugged it in.
WHilst visiting them I upgraded their laptop to the latest iTunes version and also made sure all their apps were up to date (usual maintenance stuff). At the time I also noticed that their iPad was still running iOS 3, so I decided to try to upgrade to the latest iOS version (4.3.5). I explained to them about the upgrade and they said that this explained why things in the "how to use your iPad" book they bought a few months ago did not work (i.e. folders, multi-tasking, cut and paste). This is when the problems started.
The laptop they own is very old and very slow. When plugging the iPad into the laptop, starting up iTunes and selecting to Upgrade the iPad, iTunes starts to download the iOS update. The download itself would take just over an hour. At the end of the download iTunes states it is processing the file. It stays in this state for several minutes, with lots of disk activity, before eventually coming up with the message that the connection with the iTunes server has timed out and aborts the upgrade.
I tried the upgrade 5 times and each time was the same result. The download completes and then I get the timeout message after several minutes of "processing the file".
I suspect that the problem is due to the laptop being so slow. It just cannot process the file quickly enough before the connection to iTunes times out.
I would like to be able to download the iOS update separately and then manually initiate it from iTunes (i.e. alt-click on Check for update button). The downloads page just says that the download is only available from iTunes. Is there any way I can manually do the upgrade? Where can I find a download link to get the update outside of iTunes?
Does anyone have suggestions on how I can update this iPad?
Thanks.

You can download the iOS manually, but you're still going to need iTunes to install it on their iPad.  Here is a link that explains:  http://osxdaily.com/2010/12/09/download-ios-updates-without-itunes/

  • How to enable manual ipod updates with itunes 7?

    Hi,
I perviously had a problem with muisc being greyed out on my ipod due to me syncing the it with my library, I easily fixed the porblem to allow manual updates of single tracks in ipod options.
Since then I have got a macbook and stopped using windows, so I had to reformat my ipod and sync the songs to start with, but not everything will fit and I want to add tracks I really like and remove those I dont like so much, but with itunes 7 all I can seem to do it sync my library with my ipod due to the introduction of the ipod menu and disappearance of the ipod opitons section.
Does anyone know how I can change this? please help! =)
    thanks,
    Sarah

  • How come I can't update my iPad 1 to the new iOS 6 it says my iOS version 5.1.1 is the latest version?

How come I can't update my iPad 1 to the new iOS 6 it says my iOS version 5.1.1 is the latest version?

The iPad 1, coming up on three years since it was introduced, has been given two major and a number of minor upgrades to iOS, more than many tablet manufactures provide. The iPad 1's hardware just can't effectively support many of the features in iOS 6. So I don't think that it's particularly unfair for Apple to no longer provide updates. And yes, I do own and manage a number of iPad 1s.
    Regards.

‘iPad is disabled’ fix without resetting using iTunes
Today I met my match with an iPad that had a passcode entered too many times, resulting in it displaying the message ‘iPad is disabled – Connect to iTunes’. This was a student iPad and since they use Notability for most of their work there was a chance that her files were not all backed up to the cloud. I really wanted to just re-activate the iPad instead of totally resetting it back to our default image.
I reached out to my PLN on Twitter and had some help from a few people through retweets and a couple of clarification tweets. I love that so many are willing to help out so quickly. Through this I also learned that I look like Lt. Riker from Star Trek (thanks @FillineMachine).
Through some trial and error (and a little sheer luck), I was able to reactivate the iPad without loosing any data. Note, this will only work on the computer it last synced with. Here’s how:
    1. Configurator is useless in reactivating a locked iPad. You will only be able to completely reformat the iPad using Configurator. If that’s ok with you, go for it – otherwise don’t waste your time trying to figure it out.
    2. Open iTunes with the iPad disconnected.
    3. Connect the iPad to the computer and wait for it to show up in the devices section in iTunes.
    4. Click on the iPad name when it appears and you will be given the option to restore a backup or setup as a new iPad (since it is locked).
    5. Click ‘Setup as new iPad’ and then click restore.
    6. The iPad will start backing up before it does the full restore and sync. CANCEL THE BACKUP IMMEDIATELY. You do this by clicking the small x in the status window in iTunes.
    7. When the backup cancels, it immediately starts syncing – cancel this as well using the same small x in the iTunes status window.
    8. The first stage in the restore process unlocks the iPad, you are basically just cancelling out the restore process as soon as it reactivates the iPad.
If done correctly, you will experience no data loss and the result will be a reactivated iPad. I have now tried this with about 5 iPads that were locked identically by students and each time it worked like a charm.

Try it and good luck. You have nothing more to lose if it doesn't work for you.

  • Update of software for iPad was interrupted and the iPad is now locked up.  Any ideas for how to re-start the update process?

    Hi all,
I was updating the software on my iPad2 and while trying to multitask stopped the update process.  My iPad is now locked up and unresponsive.  Does anyone have ideas about how to re-load the update?

You will need to hold down the power + sleep button, wait for restart, then hold home.  iTunes should then be in DFU mode.  Once in DFU mode connect to iTunes and click "Restore".  PRESTO!

  • How do I  undo an update to pages 2.1 on an iPad 2? I can no longer open a document previously saved, even when I try to open it in the iCloud and on my Mac.

How do I  undo an update to pages 2.1 on an iPad 2? I can no longer open a document previously saved, even when I try to open it in the iCloud and on my Mac.

With IOS Pages v2.0 and v2.1, Apple introduced a new document format that is incompatible with prior Pages versions on IOS or OS X Pages ’09. Opening older documents with these recent versions of Pages will permanently prevent the document from opening in earlier versions of Pages on IOS or OS X.
Nice of Apple to warn people.
There is no undo of an iTunes application update, short of forcing iTunes to restore IOS v6 back on that iPad 2. Even if you did that, you won't find the IOS Pages v1.7.2 in the iTunes store now.
IOS Pages v2+ will allow you to export content in Word .docx format. You do this by first tapping the box with an up-arrow in it (next to the left-most +). A menu will slide up — choose Send a Copy. Select a document icon. Pick Mail, and then Word. Your Pages v2.1 document will now be converted to Word .docx, and attached to an email body. Fill in the to address and send.

The same way it was done in every previous version.
Connect the device to the computer.
Right click on the device in iTunes and select Transfer Purchases.
Why would you lose any content by syncing with iTunes?
Is this not the computer that the device is normally synced with?

Your MBP updates time from a time server over the internet. The iPhone sets the time using the cell phone system. My AT&T iPhone is always 1 minute behind my MBP.
I think that the iPad syncs time with iTunes or through the WiFi network. My iPad which syncs to my MBP and uses WiFi from an Apple AirPort Extreme has the same exact time as my MBP, down to the second (they switch minutes simultaneously). I might be wrong on this point, so if someone knows something more, I will stand corrected.
