How to do memory allocation test
hi,
I wanted to see the memory allowed.
for example if I am using StringBuffer or String.
I need to see which is better considering the memory, how I can test it programatically.

Hi,
How does MaxDB gets memory allocated from os. Could any one please clarify.
Suppose i have X GB of physical memory & i allocated Y GB to CACHE_SIZE(Y < X ). When i start the database does it grabs all Y GB from physical memory.
When i do ipcs on linux box i only see Z GB of shared memory used( Z <<< Y). When i do top db kernel is occupying XX GB of memory (XX > Z).
So little bit confused how MaxDB gets memory allocation from OS.
Thanks in advance.> How does MaxDB gets memory allocated from os. Could any one please clarify.
You may want to check SAP note
#1128916 - FAQ: MaxDB/liveCache Heap-Management
> Suppose i have X GB of physical memory & i allocated Y GB to CACHE_SIZE(Y < X ). When i start the database does it grabs all Y GB from physical memory.
Yes, the Memory for the Buffer Cache is allocated on startup.
> When i do ipcs on linux box i only see Z GB of shared memory used( Z <<< Y). When i do top db kernel is occupying XX GB of memory (XX > Z).
Well, you likely misunderstand the output of ipcs here.
To easily see the memory allocation you may just run this query:
select usedsize from memoryallocatorstatistics where allocatorname ='SystemHeap'
Be aware that there are also other memory areas, which are dynamically allocated and deallocated.
Moreover, sometimes users mistake the CacheMemorySizeparameter value as Bytes where in reality the paramter is in pages (8k).

How to check actual allocated and used memory for java process in solaris?
Hi,
I'm testing performance for java application on solaris 10. And I would like to know how to measure actual memory allocated and used for java process.
I'm setting -Xms512m -Xmx512m for my java process and I use prstat command to monitor it's memory. But I found that when I run prstat to check, in SIZE column is more than I setting (found 644).
So I'm don't know the actual memory that java process used. (In this case,is it mean the process use memory (644) more than setting (512)?)
Thank you.With Xms/Xmx you specify the Java heap size. On top of that comes the permanent generation (default max size 64m) and the C part of the process (the JVM itself with all its libraries and data).
With "ps -e -o pid,vsz,rss,args" you get the virtual and set resident size of your processes.

How can I get the memory allocation info of a java thread?
Now I am going to write a program to monitor the execution condition of the java threads. But it seems that the classes in standard edition of JDK does not provide facilities to get the information such as the memory allocation and CPU time of a running thread. How can I do with it? Can I use JNI or JVMDI to get them? If it could do, how?
Thanks a lot. I just browsed the specification of jvmpi. It is interesting and it seems that I can get the information I need. However, if I want to get the information in my program, I mean, if I want to build a class which may use JNI method to invoke the function written with JVMPI, and then forward the data to other upper layer objects, can it be done?

How can I measure memory allocation of a Java Application?
We built a web application that enables images to be loaded into a database through a servlet running on Tomcat. We have inconsistent behaivor when more than x number of people are loading images simultaneously. No doubt a memory allocation problem, but how can I measure it?
For example, I'd like to be able to create a graph showing the resources used against the number of people making uploads. I am using Linux and Tomcat/Apache.
I am hoping for something like Memory counters that are available for measurine Windows applications on MS Windows - comes with the Resource Kit. Does this type of tool exist for the Java/Linux market?It is difficult to gauge memory usage from a Java application as the JVM handles garbage collection and even if objects are not referenced they might still be sitting in memory until the next garbage collect.
Anyhow, a way to query available memory is:
Runtime.getRuntime().freeMemory()
You can run this at the begining of a process and at the end and examine the difference. You should call System.gc() before each freeMemory() call in order to try to force garbage collection.
Another method would be to turn to the underlying OS. On linux you could use 'top' or 'ps'. With ps you could do something like:
ps -o rss,vsz,%mem <pid>
Where <pid> is the parent Tomcat process' id. The resulting three columns are:
- Amount of real memory used.
- Amount of virtual memory used.
- Percentage of real memory used.
'man ps' wil give you more options on how to use ps.
There are also fancy graphical stuff like 'gtop' as well.
Hope this helps. -
How best to configure the memory allocation
Hi,
Anyone could advise how best to configure the memory allocation by setting up
the value for
-Xms
-Xmx
-XX=NewSize
-XX=MaxNewSize
-XX:SurvivorRate
-XX:MaxPermSize
for weblogic Express 8.1 and the server has about 4G RAM ?
Thanks.Hi Chandra,

-XX:SurvivorRate

and see how it goes.
for weblogic Express 8.1 and the server has about 4G RAM ?This is way too much for a single weblogic instance. Normally 512-1024Mb
is enough. I'd consider partitioning it to multiple instances with that much
of memory. Lesser memory means faster GC.

Hi how can i know the memory allocation of occurs 10 or 100
hii
experts,
how can i know how much memory is being allocated for for occurs n(10 ,100)
for an internal table declaration.is there any tcode to know that??
plz help.
thank youHi,
welcome to sdn,
Occurs 10 means the internal table allocates space for 10 rows initially....after filling these rows it allocates for the next 10 lines...similarly occurs 100.
But if you give occurs 0 ,the internal table allocates 8kb space initially...
these are the major difference....i think you can check the memory allocation of the internal table in the debugging mode instead of using a separate transaction...
<b>Reward points if helpful,</b>

Memory allocation model on Windows
We have an application server with 16 GB of RAM and 54 GB of SWAP.
The application server run on a Windows 2003 IA64 SP2.
We are using 6.40_ex2 kernel.
When we run intensive memory program (program that use a lot of memory in internal table) we see that all the EM is allocated in PM.
HM too is allocated in PM until the PM rech less than 200 MB.
When the PM is less than 200 MB the total VM used on the server is less than 25 GB (EM: 10 GB; HM < 10 GB).
There are SAP kernel rules that defined what allocate in RAM and what allocate in Paging file?
We think that should be a better distribution from RAM and SWAP but we don't know if it is a right consideration.Essbase should use the amount of memory allocated in the Database settings, (plus some overhead for the Agent / App Server itself, which should be nowhere near 4G).Take a look at the database settings within the application. Look at the Index Cache, Data Cache and Data File Cache to ensure are not set absurdly high. As a test, leave them at their default values - worry about tuning them later.Also, how many Essbase applications are running on this server? Is it just the one?Regards,Jade-----------------------------------Jade ColeSenior Business Intelligence ConsultantClarity [email protected]

Hi,Consider the code shown,
1. class A{
2.
3. public static void main(String ... args)
4. {
5. int m;
6. m = 30;
7. }
8. }
Execution of which line allocates a memory for 'm'?Now if you change the code to
public class Test {
public static void main(String... args) {
int m=30;
}you would get
javap -c Test
Compiled from "Test.java"
public class Test extends java.lang.Object{
public Test();
Code:
0: aload_0
1: invokespecial #1; //Method java/lang/Object."<init>":()V
4: return
public static void main(java.lang.String[]);
Code:
0: bipush 30
2: istore_1
3: return
}which is the same.
The idea is that it doesn't make a difference how you write it. Memory allocation happens when is decided after the JVM optimization and not your written code. -
[iphone sdk] memory allocations and application sandboxing
folks,
does the os automatically de-allocate any memory allocated when my app exists? reason i ask is the phone seems to get slower and slower over time with more crashes. a hard restart seems to fix the problem.
i'm guessing that it is because i'm not cleaning things up on exit or something, but maybe there is something else wrong.
johnThe academic answer is: It shouldn't matter how much memory you leak in your app after the app has been closed. I can't speak to how the device functions cause I can't test on one yet! But it's UNIX under the hood and that means each process is assigned it's own address space. Any memory allocated to a process is completely reclaimed when the process exits.
I'm not sure what changes Apple made to the VM kernel subsystem for the iPhone. Unix is already tried and tested in this arena -- so if it's the default Darwin VM I would be very surprised if this is a bug. But since this is embedded they may have added some "shortcuts" for performance and efficiency... hard to say. Since you have the device, are you able to do any system level diagnostics? does the device lose free memory the more your start/stop your app?
Also -- the device has 128MB of RAM. The 8 or 16GB is storage, which isn't used for RAM. The specs are hard to find, but I think I found the answer through Google on the amount of RAM in the iPhone and iPod Touch.

865PE Neo2(6728) D-Bracket hangs at Memory Detection Test
This is terribly annoying... I just bought the mother board... Its a 865PE Neo2(6728)800mhzFSB the processor is P4 2.4ghz 800mhz, 512k l2-Cache. I dont know who made it like i know nothing about northwood or whatever, it says Intel on the box... I have 512MB of "Legacy Electronics" PC3200 64x64 DDR... I also just bought a NVdia G4 Ti-4200 64mb DDR 4x AGP made by Pixelview. I have a 160GB WD 8mb Cache 7200 HD... Ok the problem is when i go to boot up the computer, the VIDEO doesnt come on, and when i installed the "D-Bracket" the lights hang at 3 light, top right green all other red... Says in the manual that problem is memory detection test, testing onboard memory size, will hang if damaged or not installed properly. Ok. I have no idea how that wo;uld happen so, just to check i took out RAM, no dice, i changed video cards to MX440 G4, no dice, i tried disconnection the PCI slot which has the 160GB hard drive connected(why it needs this i dont know, according to WD WinXP needs...) none of this changes anything.. How do i check the onboard memory or could it be anything else? Ok thats all i have thanks for the help!!
Did you tried to boot up the system without the D-Bracket?
Yes it still does nothing, no video... Thats why i put in the D-Bracket. It doesnt sound like its going through the POST either.. I dont know if computers do that anymore thou;gh haha..
If you did, did you change to another piece of RAM to test?
I have no more DDR to put in, only SDRam and im sure that wont work.. I tried moving to different slots, 1 3 and 4 thinking maybe it was backwords i dunno... Didnt do anything, and you USED to be able to take the ram out and still boot into bios etc...
Did you change any settings in your BIOS?
I havent even gotten video, nada... Black screen.
What is the wattage of the PSU you are using now?
Where do i find the wattage? The watts on the case is uh... 350 or 400 one of the two... The case says USB Deluxe P4 Case... And the watts on the Power supply is 115 if thats what you were wondering... Hope that answer the question -
Cache Memory Allocator \ Short Term Memory Allocator Issues
Hi all
I have a number of identically configured (High School) Servers which are giving me the same memory errors (some more frequently than others) and I've run out of ideas.
They are all HP Proliant DL360 G6 Servers, NetWare 6.5 sp8 with eDir 8.8 sp5.
The error messages are :
"Cache memory allocator out of available memory." followed by "Short term memory allocator is out of memory. xxx attempts to get more memory failed. request size in bytes xxxxxxxx from Module SWEEP.NLM"
The module referred to is always "SWEEP.NLM" (Sophos Anti-virus). A Server reset solves the problem but it is normally back within a month.
I've posted below a config.txt and segstats.txt from one of the servers.
I would be grateful if someone could help me with this as it's now becoming a 'headache'.
Cheers
Neil Hughes

Somewhat. From the time of day, and the loading of commvault modules
inbetween, this looks like a combined backup / AV scan issue. The
requests of Sophos are comparably big in size, and they vary a lot. That
will lead to fragmentation of your memory, until the memory can't be
allocated in one chunk any more. It also *seems* as if Sophos actually
scans the data while it gets backed up. That is *bad*.

According to Cisco documentation for Troubleshooting Memory issues on Cisco IOS 12.1 (http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/ios-nx-os-software/ios-software-releases-121-mainline/6507-mallocfail.html#tshoot4 ), which suggests the TCP Protocols Process could not be started due to Memory being fragmented
Memory Fragmentation Problem or Bug
This situation means that a process has consumed a large amount of processor memory and then released most or all of it, leaving fragments of memory still allocated either by this process, or by other processes that allocated memory during the problem. If the same event occurs several times, the memory may fragment into very small blocks, to the point where all processes requiring a larger block of memory cannot get the amount of memory that they need. This may affect router operation to the extent that you cannot connect to the router and get a prompt if the memory is badly fragmented.
This problem is characterized by a low value in the "Largest" column (under 20,000 bytes) of the show memory command, but a sufficient value in the "Freed" column (1MB or more), or some other wide disparity between the two columns. This may happen when the router gets very low on memory, since there is no defragmentation routine in the IOS.
If you suspect memory fragmentation, shut down some interfaces. This may free the fragmented blocks. If this works, the memory is behaving normally, and all you have to do is add more memory. If shutting down interfaces doesn't help, it may be a bug. The best course of action is to contact your Cisco support representative with the information you have collected.

Error Message %TCP-3-FORKFAIL: Failed to start a process to negotiate options.
Explanation The system failed to create a process to handle requests from a client. This condition could be caused by insufficient memory.
Recommended Action Reduce other system activity to ease memory demands.
But I am still not sure about the exact root cause is as
1.The GET/GETNEXT / GET BULK messages from SNMP Manager (Here, IBM Tivoli Netcool ) uses default SNMP Port 161 which is
UDP and not TCP
2. If its ICMP Polling failure from IBM Tivoli Netcool , ICMP is Protocol Number 1 in Internet Layer of TCP/IP Protocol Suite and TCP is Protocol Number 6 in the Transport Layer of TCP/IP Protocol Suite .
So I am still not sure how TCP Protocol Process Failure could have caused ICMP Timeout . Please help !
Could you please help me on what TCP Protocol Process handles in a Cisco Switch ?

How to increase memory allowed for an application
Before in OS 9 and below we can expand the quantity of memory for an application, we can't do same in OS X.
OS X is able to set himself the amount of memory for an application. This seems to work but I think there is a limit sets by OS X.
My question is how to increase this amount of memory ?
I tried to increase it in terminal using "ulimit -d unlimited" but this is not working enough.
I use to do calculation with matrix systems and iterations in Mapple software but on my iMac with 4 GB of RAM memory, when application reaches 450 MB, I get a memory error message. Activity monitor at same time says there is more than 2 GB free !
Has somebody a solution to free this limit, even for a small time or for only an application ?
Thanks for your help.The full message is :
"Kernel connection has been lost. The kernel returned the following message :
Execution stopped : Memory allocation failed.
Please sea ?alloc for more detail.
You should save this worksheet and restart Maple
Executing commands in Mapple requires a connection to the Maple kernel.
Firewalls have been known to cause problems with kernel connections in Maple. Please ensure that any firewall software is configured to allow Maple to create connections to the kernel. Consul the FAQ for more information."
I checked the firewalls of OS X, they are shutdown and no restrictions seems to be set for processes.
We are expecting for a new version of Maple with some modifications due to Snow. -
Internal Table Memory Allocation
Hello all,
I could understand the difference between Internal Table with occurs 0 and internal table with type declaration...
correct me if i am wrong, occurs 0 declaration occupies 8kb memory and header line 256 bytes...
But what i could not get is...
Where can i view this internal table runtime memory usage?? Should i have to check that in some transaction???
If that is the case, what transaction i should look at?? Can i view this in debugging mode??? I tried GOTO -> STATUS DISPLAY -> MEMORY USE and i have tried even SETTINGS -> MEMORY MONITORING ->MEMORY DISPLAY ON...Nothing worked..
when i go for GOTO -> STATUS DISPLAY -> MEMORY USE in debugging
memory allocated seems to be same for Internal table with occur 0 and Internal table with type declaration
I have searched a lot about this in SDN....But could not come to a conclusion......
I don't have authorisation here for DBG_MEMORY_DIFFTOOL or S_MEMORY_INSPECTOR unfortunately.....
Waiting for your replies....Hi Jagannathan,
You can view this on Debugger(ECC6.0) onwards.
To find out how much memory internal tables occupy, choose Goto --> Display Condition --> Memory Usage.
Choose Change Settings to display a window, in which you can choose the Internal Tables button.
Hope this will assists you for your quest.

-Syed.
