How to do slices with Fireworks

I need to know how to change with slice tool images from gif
to jpg?
Currently it shows me gif format but do not know where to
change this format or this is not possible. Need help

In the Optimize panel, far right. If it's not showing, Window
> Optimize
should bring it up.

Is there a reason each path is it's own object? Do they have
to remain

If they don't, you can select the paths that make up the
different areas
and try using Modify > Alter Path > Join or Modify
> Alter Path >
Union. You will probably need to remove some anchor points if
you choose
one of these options.
Are you aware of the Vector path tool which let's you draw a
path
freehand? That might be a better option than the Pen tool.

Slide menu with fireworks on dreamweaver

i've done a slide menu with fireworks. HOW exactly do you put that on the webpage now (i use dw 8).

By slide menu you mean something like a menu bar? I don't really get it. Post an image if you want.
I recommend to create your menu inside dreamweaver using html and css and not in fireworks, because your site is going to be really heavy and not compatible with the web standards.
But, to answear to your question: Since you've got a complete menu with slices, or symbols such as buttons,export it as html and images (be sure to export the slices too).
Inside dreamweaver use the Insert > Image objects > Fireworks HTML. Browse to your exported file and press ok.

Problems with Fireworks CS3 in Windows 7 Pro 64 bit

I have recently upgraded to Windows 7 Pro from Windows XP Pro. My Fireworks CS3 is having a problem. I cannot select items in the left side menu bar if I minimize or move the Fireworks CS3 window. If I have just opened the window it works, but minimize the window or move it and the toolbar stops working.
This problem is not unique to my machine. 2 other people are having the exact same problem. Here is the link to the Windows 7 forum:

Businesses with mission-critical software usually are very careful to research that their software will run on any proposed new system or that alternative software is available. This is the main reason that Microsoft had to continue supporting XP longer than they intended. Too much business-critical software ran on XP but did not run under Vista and would take some time before it would be upgraded to do so...if at all.
If you have "bread and butter" apps, then it was your responsibility to make sure that you could run them once you upgraded. Adobe's software worked more or less as advertised for the operating systems that were available at the time the versions were released. That's reasonable. Expecting indefinite support into the future is not.
Fireworks isn't a $2000 product. Adobe continues product development, yes. They've moved on to CS4 and its patches. You can upgrade to FW CS4 for about $150. The system requirements for FW CS4 do not include Windows 7; note that Fireworks is only certified for 32-bit operating systems:

Can't Select Slice in Fireworks

For some reason I can no longer select slices. When I click on one the content below is selected.
When I create new slices I can select them without a problem but after a while, especially after reopening the file, all slices are no longer selectable.
I can select them in the layers menu but no longer on the artboard.
Any suggestions?
This is on a Mac, Snow Leopard with Fireworks CS4.

Hi Jim - sorry I think I replied by mail instead of posting but as an update and in case anyone else has the same problem ..
It was working fine yes and then stopped. It happened on all files with pre existing slices even on very small files e.g. a single small image consisting of a single slice - irrespective of layer or page. I still have CS3 installed and that works as expected so I don't think it's any file itself but the application behaviour. As the previous poster mentioned I can delete a slice via selecting via the web layer call out and pressing delete. A new slice then behaves correctly but if I select a slice via the web layer and right click what seems to happen is that Fireworks selects the object beneath the slice and deselects the slice so that the context menu is incorrect.
I had indeed installed a music program! - I've recently bought an ipad for web testing which necessitated me installing iTunes to initiate its use. I also installed an app called music notes which stores sheet music. I uninstalled both and rebooted to no avail and a system restore failed.
This morning with a fresh eye I checked and iTunes had not uninstalled all components. After 'cleansing' all traces and a reboot all is working normally again!
Thank you so much for coming along yesterday and getting me to think wider than a bug in the manifesting product. iTunes and digital sheet music I can live without...Fireworks I can't!

Edit with Fireworks

There is no "edit in fireworks" command on this context menu
even though I have Fireworks installed. I only have "edit with . .
." and it makes me choose the external program .exe file every time
I need to edit an image. How can I define an editor? I am sure
there is an easier way.

In PREFERENCES | File Types / Editors, Make sure you show the
correct path
to FW in the field called "Fireworks:". Then, under the
various desired
graphics file extensions, REMOVE Fireworks so that the right
panel is blank,
and then RE-ADD Fireworks.
Your other issue is a system issue, not a DW issue, and I
believe you were
given a solution earlier in the thread.

Trouble with fireworks integration

I installed Dreamweaver CS3 a while ago and was using it with
Fireworks 8. I just upgraded to fireworks cs3. I changed the
preferences so Dreamweaver looks for cs3 instead of 8. But when I
go to edit a png from the link in dreamweaver, I don't have full
access to the png. My graphic is there, but I can't access the
popup menu. If I just open the same file in fireworks, it works
just fine. Does anyone have any ideas how to fix that?

Try selecting the fireworks file in question ( from folder it
is contained in),right click ,select get info ,Then select open
with, select fireworks cs3 and select (Use this application to open
all documents like this. This should change it over to a cs3 file
and then it should be recognized by dream . I am not positive about
this but I went through the same thing about a year ago and I think
this is how I got around the problem.

i have some problems with using background image slices.
here is it(from the DevNet arcticle creating standards
compliant web designs with fireworks cs4):
With this feature, seeing really is believing, so let's get

1. Create a new 500 × 500 document.
2. Draw a 200 × 40 rectangle.
3. Set the background color as #000099.
4. Set its fill to be a Linear gradient.
5. Change the first Gradient node's color to #9999FF.
6. Select Edit > Insert > Rectangular Slice.

* Name: bg_rect
* Width: 1px
* Type: Background Image
* Repeat: repeat-x

i followed these steps exactly but i get no tiled background
only the 200 x 40 rectangle.can anyone tell me what's wrong ?

I followed these steps exactly and also viewed the HTML/CSS
exported in Firefox 3.0.5, and the rectangle appeared with the
correctly tiled gradient background. (I'm on a Win XP SP3 machine.)
I tried changing the canvas color to transparent, moving the
rectangle and slice around, changing the width of the slice, and
even changing the horizontal and vertical positioning of the
background image, and the export was still correct. Is it possible
your background image slice is not placed over the gradient? Have
you looked at the CSS exported to confirm that "bg_rect.gif" is
listed as the background image for the DIV and that the .GIF file
is being exported and is a narrow gradient image? Are all of the
export options correct? (There's only a few export options for CSS
and images (.htm), so I doubt this is your problem...)
At risk of asking the obvious, are you using Fireworks CS4
with the updated CSS/HTML extension from the article installed?
HTML/CSS export works differently between CS3 and CS4 - John
Wylie's extension was created for CS3, and Matt Stow updated it for
CS4.

Glitchy Slices with WordPress Design

I was wondering if one or more of you experts can help me out.
I'm working with this template from Template Monsters

I made some rollover images in Fireworks, that looks pretty good on a standard export. (quick sample) However when I enter the code into WordPress HTML editor, while the design may show, the buttons won't rollover.
I tried creating a sample HTML page without the wordpress management and the rollovers work again but doesn't solve the bigger issue.
I have two questions regarding the matter:
1. Can I get the Fireworks slices and code to work well in WordPress?
I'm having some troubles when taking the theme code and placing the Firework HTML in between the template coding. I had some success but I was foolish to not document what steps I took to get there. If you can take a look at these 2 samples and tell me what you think the problem is that would be great. Both times I fixed the error it was like a line or two that needed to be addressed but I can't seem to solve it now.

That's exactly the problem I'm trying to solve. From what I've read, Fireworks will export the slices with absolute pixel positioning if there are overlapping slices but I haven't been able to make this work.
I started working on a little Javascript function to export the slices with absolute pixel positioning and it's working pretty well so far. I'll post it here once I've finished it.

Convince me to "stick with Fireworks"

Hi All,
I switched from Photoshop to Fireworks back in 1999 - because of its mix of Vector & Raster editing, slice/export and GIF animation capabilities. I've stayed loyal I think you'll agree!
But... my command of Photoshop and Illustrator has suffered. I feel there's so much I could do with those tools not only for for print, but also for websites.
I tried going back to Photoshop a few times over the years but just couldn't manage its drawing tools - maddening!
However, I'm now seriously considering switching if PS does what I need... and more.
FW cons
Most web design job ads specify PS not FW
I need to be adept with PS and AI for print etc. I'm fossilizing!
Assets and Artwork are often PS and AI files, it'd be good to share files with others in the company without probs
It'd be good to use the same app and sometimes the same files for web and print
Raster Image editing is more basic
Less 'painterly' in its capabilities.
Feels like I need to move on and upskill as a designer
FW pros
Can I draw in PS as easily as FW? - or will I need to awkwardly integrate Illustrator into the workflow?
Handy sometimes to make animated gifs (but perhaps I should do it in Flash)
I'm expert with it.
So here it is: Why should I stick with Fireworks?

Ditto -- bummer of a workflow.
Someone will eventually consolidate these apps into a plugin-based framework like Firefox. I made a blog post about this, urging people to request this as a (huge) feature.
I, too, need convincing.
I recently switched, hoping to avoid the duality of Photoshop & Illustrator, then found out FIREWORKS CAN'T EXPORT TO EPS?!?! I thought I had beaten the system -- vector AND raster drawing.... I'm still waiting for someone to make a plugin. I'd pay good money for this!
Right now, the only convincing feature is the unique object-oriented nature of fireworks.

Data Slice With Variables- not working

We are in BI 7.0.
We have tried the data slice with variables approach and it is not working for us.
We need to lock the plan data for the past periods. For this, We have created a data slice (selection) with variable of type customer exit for fiscalyear/period. How to populate this variable with the past month's data?. For Bex variables, this can be done in the cmod exits. Can we use the same cmod exits for populating data slice variable too?. If yes, then how this works?.( In case of Bex variable, the variable will be used in the characterics restriction (like fiscper) and hence this is getting filled up by the exit. How this works for the data slice variable?.

Thanks for your response. Let me clarify one more thing related to this. I have 10 characterstics with a kf 0amount at my Aggregation level and i want to create a data slice to restrict the user not to change the data for the older periods. So, do i have to use all characterstics like my agg level or do i have to use only the fiscal year period?
and the other thing is that it won't let me use a variable when i select the exit function for the fiscal year period when i created my data slice? where i can specify the variable name? is that at the settings tab or some where else?

How can I print with the black and white cartridge only?

I am trying to print using the black and white cartridge only because magenta is out of ink but I'm getting the following error message in HP Photosmart C7200 series print dialog:
The printer is out of ink.
The following ink cartridges are empty: Magenta. Replace these ink cartridges to resume printing.
How can I print with the black and white cartridge only?

Open Hub: How-to doc "How to Extract data with Open Hub to a Logical File"

Hi all,
We are using open hub to download transaction files from infocubes to application server, and would like to have filename which is dynamic based period and year, i.e. period and year of the transaction data to be downloaded.
I understand we could use logical file for this purpose. However we are not sure how to have the period and year to be dynamically derived in filename.
I have read in sdn a number of posted messages on a similar topic and many have suggested a 'How-to' paper titled "How to Extract data with Open Hub to a Logical Filename". However i could not seem to be able to get document from the link given.
Just wonder if anyone has the correct or latest link to the document, or would appreciate if you could share the document with all in sdn if you have a copy.

After creating open hub press F1 in Application server file name text box from the help window there u Click on Maintain 'Client independent file names and file paths' then u will be taken to the Implementation guide screen > click on Cross client maintanance of file name > create a logical file path by clicking on new entiries > after creating logical file path now go to Logical file name definition there give your Logical file , name , physical file (ur file name followed by month or year what ever is applicable (press f1 for more info)) , data format (ASC) , application area (BW) and logical path (choose from F4 selection which u have created first), now goto Assignment of physical path to logical path > give syntax group >physical path is the path u gave at logical file name definition.
however we have created a logical path file name to identify the file by sys date but ur requirement seems to be of dynamic date of tranaction data...may u can achieve this by creating a variable. U can see the help from F1 that would be of much help to u. All the above steps i have explained will help u create a dynamic logical file.

Are you using query in SAP Business One or outside the system? If you select the tables in SAP Business One as OPCH and OPDN then no inner join will appear, as the links sit on the line level. You will need PCH1 and PDN1. The link can be found in both directions, but bear in mind that 1 AP Invoice could be based on more than 1 Goods Receipt PO. For this reason the best approach is to start at the AP Invoice line level and use the BaseType and BaseRef fields to view which lines were pulled from which Goods Receipt PO's.

I am new in OWB tools and I have many doubts. Therefore, I would like to know if anyone can guide me a bit with the theme of FK and profiles.
How do I work with FK in a data profile?
If I have a table that has a FK to most of the tables, because it is like a parent table. What should I do to have that FK in the profile?
e.g.

- Table 1 FK Table 3
- Table 1 FK Table 4
- Table 1 FK Table 5
- Table 1 FK Table 6

You should have a data profile with each table or a data profile for all related tables?
If I am all in a single profile, that it would have no problem but I would only slow every time that I have to add a new table, but if I got separated, I can not use the FK? What is the solution that will give this problem?
