  • Trouble Printing or Scanning? Try the HP Print and Scan Doctor

Are you having trouble when you try to print or scan with your Deskjet, Officejet, or Photosmart printer or All-in-One?
Does your print job get “stuck” and never come out of your printer?
Are you getting an error message when you try to scan?
HP suggests that you download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor. While not all types of printing and scanning communication problems are addressed with this software utility, many common problems are resolved. This utility can be used to troubleshoot and in some cases directly fix common connectivity problems experienced with many of HP’s desktop printers and all-in-one devices when used on Windows XP, Vista, Win 7, and Win 8 systems (administrator privileges are necessary in order to run the utility).
If the HP Print and Scan Doctor detects missing or incompatible software parts, the utility will offer to uninstall the current parts so that a subsequent reinstall process will go smoothly.  The uninstall / reinstall process usually resolves printing and scanning connectivity issues with a minimum of further fuss.
Get it here:  HP Print and Scan Doctor
Please Give HP Your Feedback!  If you use the HP Print and Scan Doctor, HP would like to hear from you afterward  – there’s a survey link built right into utility and it only takes a minute or two.  Your ideas on how to improve the Print and Scan Doctor help HP design new features and enhancements for all of our customers.  Thanks for taking the time to respond.
Do you have a networked printer?
If your printer is network connected rather than connected via USB, you may be experiencing network related connectivity issues.  Any network connectivity issues must be addressed first.  The HP Print and Scan Doctor will also check for and help you resolve network issues that previously required a separate utility (the HP Network Diagnostic Utility).  With the HP Print and Scan Doctor this is no longer necessary!  HP has combined all features of the Print Diagnostic, Scan Diagnostic, and Network Diagnostic utilities into our next generation utility!
The HP Print and Scan Doctor runs on Windows XP, Vista, Win 7, and Win 8.  You will need administrator privileges in order to run the utility.
Additional information on using HP Diagnostic Utilities can be found here:

  • A "HP Twain Scan" function in the "Print and Scan Doctor" app - Solution?

Frustration!! Why can't I get the scanning portion of subject printer to work on my laptop Windows 7 (64-bit)!?? I've tried the Print and Scan Doctor several times, and the same dysfunction says "HP Twain Scan" whatever that means or is? I've pulled out the cords, all of 'em, and it still not helping.  Did I purchase a printer that is not compatible with my laptop? As far as the scanning portion is concerned, or what?  I can print OK, both from website/emails and my own documents.  I do a lot of scanning (photos mostly), and so this will be a sad problem.Hoping someone out there in techland can give me a solution. Thanks!

  • HP Print and Scan Doctor can't connect to HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus.

My HP Officejet Pro 8600 has been working perfectly for the last 1+ years, up until 2 days ago, when it stopped printing jobs submitted from my Windows 7 desktop.  I've tried all manner of repair, thus far unsuccessfully, including
resetting the IP on both the printer and the desktop
    trying wireless connection, no difference
    reinstalling drivers and firmware
    hard-resetting the printer
repeatedly trying to print test pages
repeatedly restarted the Print Spooler, and rebooted the desktop
attempting to troubleshoot using HP Print and Scan Doctor.
    Additional facts:
My wife can use the printer from her work laptop without any problems.
I can ping the printer from the desktop at its static IP, so IP-level connectivity isn't the problem.
The standard print queue view indicates "(Offline)" in the title bar, and attempting to print a test page from the Properties dialog submits the page, then Status flips to "Error - Offline - Printing", despite the fact that the Properties dialog shows no checkmark next to Use Printer Offline menu entry.
The Doctor finds the printer at its IP and acknowledges that it's installed, and when asked to Fix Printing, says that everything checks-out okay with the product.  However, when I ask it to Test Print, it comes back with a pop-up stating it's Unable to Communicate with Printer; it suggests "Click Help for additional assistance information.", but there's no Help button.
If you've experienced this printer in a similar firmly-wedged state, I'd deeply appreciate hearing how you fixed it.
    Thanks,

    Hi @Sunshyn2005
I timed-out waiting for advice, and contacted HP Support, who helped me get the printer back on the air.  While we didn't manage to root-cause it, in the course of trying various things, the tech disabled Norton 360's firewall, which then allowed connecting to the printer, and restoring print service, which remains up after re-enabling the firewall.
The timing of the disconnection doesn't neatly corellate with any Windows updates.  My own theory is that it was caused by a 360 update, but am unable to find a smoking gun, since 360 doesn't provide update history.  The exact root-cause remains a mystery, but at least provides another thing for folks to try should they find themselves in similar straits.
I really appreciated your hint that a Windows update might be the root cause, and your pointing out how to review the history and back-out updates: this morning, I found that Windows had installed a batch of updates overnight, and found that no browsers worked.  Using your advice, I rolled back the update, restoring browsing.
    Thanks,

  • Scanner in use error message. Print and scan doctor page not found

I have an officejet pro 8500a which is giving an error message: scanner in use.  it frequently does this and I reboot computer, turn off router and prnter and then turn all back on again and it usually works.  This time it won't.  I was directed to download the print and scan doctor but whether I enter the address in the url or click on the link I am directed to a page saying that it is not found.  What else can I do besides throw this through the window?

Hello @trishdg and welcome to the HP Forums!
Which operating system is on the computer you use the printer with?
If you make a Copy (as that uses the scanner) do you get any errors that indicate the scanner is in use then?
This Print and Scan Doctor link will start the download for you right away (meaning it doesn't take you to a page, that link starts the download as soon as you click on it ) so you won't feel the need to through anything out the window
Let me know how those steps go, and we will go from there!

  • HP Solution Center stopped working and HP Print and Scan Doctor cannot find my OJ4680

HP Solution Center came installed on my HP G60 notebook with Windows 7 premium 64 bit.  It suddenly stopped working--it says it cannot run because the device installation is not complete.  If I open HP Sup0ort Assistant it says the OJ4680 is ready and it is designated as the default printer in Printers and Devices but when I try to run HP Print and Scan Doctor it cannot find it--it can only find OJ4500 which I use when I'm in my second home.  Please help me fix this as at this point I can't print or scan.

Thanks for the help and quick response.  I haven't tried your solution yet because before I received your instructions I updated the drivers again and it appears to be working though I've had a message since then that I couldn't scan because my device was offline which was not true as I had just printed a document.  I used HP Print and Scan doctor and followed the steps which included turning the device off and unplugging it for 60 seconds.  I can now copy, print and scan but I still have the yellow triangles with exclamation points on both my PC and all in one.  I'm not sure I want to do more at this point since everything is working well at the moment. BTW my laptop is set for automatic updates by HP and Microsoft, why didn't they keep this problem from occurring?

  • LaserJet software/driver issues. Print and Scan Doctor doesn't work on scanning function of MFP.

Upon using the diagnostic utility HPPSdr. exe, only the select an action "Fix Printing" shows up and not the "Fix Scanning" option. Our printer is the LaserJet 3050 connected via usb running under Windows Vista32 on a HP dv8408us laptop. The scanning driver is HP imaging 4.0.4.0. There have been numerous problems with this scanning software/driver package which have been well illustrated on the HP forums. An update is sorely needed. All that HP customers really expect when we buy a product is that we get the functionality that we paid for and that we get support for the software and hardware for a reasonable length of time, I think that 5-7 years after the final production date of the product, at least, is reasonable. In the case of the 3050, the scanning has never worked right since day 1 because the scans are too light with signatures and time stamps showing up poorly. With the pnp driver installed it it almost impossible to scan in receipts, etc. The communication software Toolbox FX is needed to use the scan button on the machine, and since there are so many problems with this package with respect to system resource usage and connectivity, we can't use it and we don't get the walk up use of the scan button that we paid for originally. As Microsoft has updated the Windows OS, HP has failed to keep pace and we lose functionality of our equipment over time.  The diagnostic utilities have supposedly been updated several times and the scanning portion of the MFP still doesn't show. Surely the wide base of installation of this product could justify the expense of some engineering time for an update to the software and drivers. If HP hopes to turn itself around, a commitment needs to be made towards engineering products that really work in the environments that its customers use them, or else HP will merely be regarded as marketing company that is only concerned with selling the next thing without respect to customer retention.

    VisionAiry,
    Thank you for your response,
There have been problems with the software and drivers for the LaserJet MFP/AIO machines which have been well illustrated by many users on here for several years. What is shocking is the unwillingness of HP to address these issues at an engineering and design level. This is the level in your organization that these problems need to be addressed at, not at the marketing and customer service level. The software/driver package has never really worked right ever since the 3050 - 3392 series was introduced back in 2006. The scanning drivers in the pnp drivers don't work, and never have, because of frequent communication problems. Someone never bothered to check if a blue ink signature would scan. I and several others have reported on these issues. What I have discoverd, through much trial and error, is that the full software package upon installation with only basic drivers installed using the check boxes in the menu, actually installs differently than the pnp driver. Who would have thought this? So now the machine scans OK.
My PC really appreciates not having the ToolboxFX installed. ToolBoxFX Error messages and crashes have been well documented on here. This is an application that puts an unnecessary drain on system resources. The only problem is that now the use of the Scan button on the machine is taken away so I don't get the walk up use of the scan button that we paid for in the original design. Why is the scan button function tied to the defective ToolboxFX software?
As far as printing goes, after carefully deleting the original print drivers, I use the PCL 5 and PCL6 UPD drivers. They work a lot better than the original print drivers ever did. But what about scanning? The scan driver on the 3050 dates all the way back to 7 2007. Scanning is an integral part of the functioning of most offices nowadays, but it is an afterthought at HP.  Why would a driver, software or diagnostic package only address half of the capabilities of a machine?
When I went on the vacation recently, I tried to use my PCL 5 and PCL 6 drivers on my relatives 2009 OfficeJet 7310 and it wouldn't work at all. I had to spend 2 hours with multiple failed attempts to install the full 7310 package on my PC. Installation problems and repeated attempts are a constant theme with HP software. The very term Universal Print Driver is misleading because it won't work on many of the HP products out there. The product listing for the UPD, I only recently discovered on here, with help, because it was so buried on the UPD information page.
The LaserJet 3050 at $300 from Staples wasn't the most expensive printer out there, but it wasn't the least either. It is actually a pretty nice piece of hardware. I have invested over $1,500 in marked up toner since I've had this machine. HP needs to do better for us.

How do I import an image directly from the internet without printing and scanning it in first?

You can also Ctrl click on the image, save the image to your desktop and open it in Photoshop.
    1.
    2.
    3. Open in Photoshop by double-clicking on the saved image on your Desktop or Cmd o in Photoshop.
I don't see any point to copying and pasting from a browser into a new file in Photoshop.
If you want to put an image onto an already open image in Photoshop, use the File > Place... command and select your saved image.

  • How to set up Yosemite 10.10.1 to print and scan using CANON PIXMA MP780 (on MacBook Pro). Thanks. Bozdogan

How to set up Yosemite 10.10.1 to print and scan using CANON PIXMA MP780 on MacBook Pro (Pre-Yosemite operating system OS X10.6.8)?
Yosemite 10.10.1 doesn't seem to support MP780. Also, CANON doesn't have a driver for Yosemite 10.10.1 for its MP 780 series.
    Thanks. Bozdogan  (at [email protected])

I believe you should be able to print wirelessly using your MBP and printer. However, you will want to visit the Canon home site and download the current drivers and firmware for your printer. Once you've done this, I hope you'll post back with your results.

Not using any mouse pad, I have a very smooth desktop. But I just tried to use a sheet of A4 printing paper, but no result, the problem persisted.
Someone on this forum suggested, that USB3 may interfere with the magic mouse.
I have 2 LaCie HDD's about 70 cm away from the mouse, I use them on Thunderbolt. But in operation or not - the result is the same, the mouse plays up! Just now I was clicking the desktop and the mouse created a new folder!!
    Thanks for the advice, Bee

  • HP laserjet m1536dnf mfp print and scan is very slow

    Hi Sir/Madam,
HP laserjet m1536dnf mfp print and scan is printing and scanning slow on network. Sometimes scan is not work. That's why I have to reinstall the printer driver. So how to increase print speed?
    Thanks in advance,

    Hi riz1_4444,
Welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience!
I understand the printer is printing and scanning slow on the network.
I will be happy to help you.
Make sure printer is connected directly to a wall outlet.
Try printing a hardware test on the printer to see if it prints slow or not.
Printing a Configuration Report. Select Method one: Print a Configuration Report from the printer control panel.
I would restart the router to see if this will resolve the issue.
    Try another Ethernet cable.
If you are still having issue then test the printer by connecting the printer to the computer by a USB cable to see if it is something on the network that is causing it to slow down.
Hope this resolves your issue for printing slow over the network.
