Creating an account on iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch
Open the App Store on your device.
Find a free application on the App Store.

Choose your country, and then tap Done.
   You'll need to read and agree to the iTunes Store Terms & Conditions. Tap Agree located at the bottom of the page to continue.
Enter your email address, security questions, birthday, and create your password.
You also can enter an optional rescue email address. If you frequently change email addresses, it is recommended that you add a rescue email address. Learn more about the rescue email address.

Select None as your payment option.
   Continue to fill out the required email, address, and phone number fields. Tap Next.

I recently just got my ipod touch, and when i try to buy a free app, it comes up with "this apple ID has not been used in the itunes store. tap review to sign in, then review your account information". it then leads you to a page where you write your credit card number in. is there anyway of not having to put it in? or do you have to even with free apps?

You have to have a valid payment method to run an itunes account. That can be credit/debit card or a giftcard.
In some domains there are also others accepted such as click and buy (Charged to phone bill)
This is because many "free apps" may have in app purchases.

my problem solve by me
first create apple id
fill credit card details
and complete your account creating process.
than go to app store or itune store
login your acount
click right side - account button
than again login for account setting
next go to payment information and click edit button
when u enter payment infomation
click none button in payment method and click done button.
than ur credit card has been removed.
but rs. 60 will deducted in your account when u doing this process.

Yes I did, I have two apple ID's, one which I created only yesterday this is the one which I do not want my credit card details on.
So I signed out of my existing account (tried this in itunes store and app store, on my mac and ipod touch) then signed in with new ID, can't get past the credit card request. I don't get the none option, on the touch i don,t get the pop up scrolling window with all the options.
I want this seperate account so my son has the freedom to download free games etc on his ipod touch without access to my creditcard.

To get the none option, sign out of anything apple you're signed into. Go to the app store and try to download a free app, any free app. Instead of signing in, take the option to to make a new apple ID. Then go through the steps to make the ID and you'll see the 'none' option.

Next to your Payment Type, click "Edit." Select the "None" button and click "Done." Confirm that your card has been removed by returning to the Apple account information screen. Under Payment Type, it should say that there is no credit card on file.

@Limnos - that doesn't work anymore. There is no NONE option. I've been at it for hours trying to set up my daughter's account. I've tried creating and verifying an appleID on the web, on her touch...everything. Every single time you get to the stupid Touch, it wants to walk you through the verification of the account and it demands payment (even for their suggested apple Remote method listed in the KB).
