How to downgrade a new iMac (model 12.1) to SnowL

Hi I just got a new iMac with the latest version of Lion but I want it to run under SL, since many of my prgrams won't work on Lion.
I got the original SL instalation disc as well as a Time Machine Backup HD (with Leopard from my old iMac).
Regards

Your new iMac may not be able to boot into Snow Leopard. Although the currently-shipping models were first released with Snow Leopard, and so one might assume that they can boot into Snow Leopard, those being sold now might have received minor changes to their hardware or firmware which prevent Snow Leopard from fully functioning or booting these machines at all.
I know that I've had mixed success with recently-purchased iMacs and Snow Leopard. So I suggest that you do not remove the Lion installation, but instead use an external hard drive or a partition of the internal hard drive for any attempt to install Snow Leopard.
If you have a "full retail" Snow Leopard installation DVD, just pop it into your iMac's optical drive (after formatting the external drive/partitioning the internal drive using Disk Utility, of course), restart while holding the C key on your keyboard, and be sure to choose the external drive/correct internal drive partition on which you want to try installing Snow Leopard.

  • How to downgrade my new iMac to OSX 10.4

I have just received my new iMac 24" (intel, 3,06 Ghz) with 10.5.4 pre-installed.
Due to specific driver problems with an important printer I need to downgrade to 10.4.x but none of my "old" disks seems to work. They either do not recognise the hardware or just keep on rebooting.
Anybody an idea on how to do this?
    Thanks,

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
The general rule is that you can't:

I know that the first revision of Aluminium iMacs probably could be downgraded as the early ones were shipped with Tiger.
Could you post details of the driver issue to see if we can help with that?

Hi All, complete newbie to all things Apple.
Just got a new iMac struggling a little with many things any advice would be very welcome ......before i go off the idea that a Mac was a good decision.
Current Probs: 1. Cant find out how to authorise the new imac as a new device for playing itunes.
2, Is installing windows 8 or 7 as a dual boot system, any down sides to this arrangement.
    3. Is icloud email a viable email client, ie. mass mailing, categories etc.

On iTunes, find Store in the menu bar, you can authorise your computer from there using the Apple ID you wish to use for that.

Help, please! Any advice on how I link my new iMac and my new itunes software with existing external harddrive containing my entire itunes library?

    Hello!
It should be a matter of
Quiting iTunes first if it's running
Connecting your external harddrive to your Mac, use the Finder to browse to it
Find your iTunes folder on the ext HDD and double-click on iTunes Library.itl
If you have any trouble with this, please let us know.

PS : you will need a credit card to complete the steps.

  • Looking to downgrade my new iMac to mountain lion HELP

Can't seem to find the right help. I run Mountain Lion on my laptop and I love it. I recently bought a new iMac and was very excited at my new work station at home only to discover Mavericks is unusable.
I'd like to go back to Mountain Lion. Yes, the iMac came with Mavericks loaded, but this OS is fail. I need to be able to work, and work fast with out having to be my own IT support as well. I need my tools too, track pad, safari, etc.
How can I downgrade? Is it going to cost me? Heck, is it possible? Support has been unhelpful. If I can't downgrade I am going to take this shiny paper weight and exchange it for a PC and save money. Why pay a premium when the one feature that demanded the premium is unusable? I am NOT a happy apple customer. After 25 years I am about to walk away for good.

You may not be able to "downgrade" the OS on a machine that shipped with Mavericks installed.
The normal method would be to erase the drive and then install 10.8.5. You'll need to buy a redemption code at the Apple Store to use at the App Store.

  • Have Photoshop CC on PC. How to install on new iMac? [was:Gary k]

Download and Install the Mac version of the Adobe Cloud Desktop Application.  Install it sign in to the cloud and install Photoshop CC. You can have two activations. One Mac and one PC is OK.

  • How noisy/quiet is new iMac with Retina 5K display?

How noisy/quiet is new 5K iMac compared to the standard display versions? I returned three 27" iMacs (3.5GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7) back in May because they were too noisy for me. Is this 5K machine any different?

imac 5k sadly has a very active fan, especially in the combination of i7 and the amd r9 m295x gpu (4gb).
check the forums (wow, cod etc.) where many people are currently complaining and returning their mac (me as well considering it).. while gaming the fan speed is at 2700 rpm which is around 38 db (very loud!) and the gpu is 105C (not fahrenheit!).
all processor (cpu) intensive tasks like handbrake, rendering etc. will make the i7 go warm and the fan go loud.
all graphics (gpu) intensive tasks like any game will make the amd m295x go hot and the fan go very loud.
regular surfing, photoshop etc. is not affected!
in normal mode, it's always at 1200 rpm where it is not audible to me.
if you want it as quiet as possible go with the i5 and the cheaper graphics card (290x).
just be aware that this is the loudest imac or even mac ever (louder than current mac pro) and I'm not sure if constant heat (105C) is affecting life expectancy and I've been having them since 1991.

  • How do i get new imac to work with windows

I'm new to the imac world, how do I get it to work with windows

If you are talking about MS Windows then you need to launch either Boot Camp or run it in Virtualization app such as Parallels or VM Fusion.  You also need a valid license of MS Windows. However if that is not what you mean then you must be much more specific. For example:
"I want to share some files between my PC running Windows 7 and my new iMac running 10.9.3, how do I go about that?"

  • How do I wipe new iMac (3/2012) H.Drive and reinstall Lion and the preinstalled application?

I just bought a 27" iMac (3/2012) and migrated the data from my Mac Pro into the new iMac.  It's now overloaded with the settings and files that I should have just put on an external drive, but I didn't. I want to erase everything and start with what OS and applications when I purchased it.  It is running Lion OS X Version 10.7.3.  Before the app store I understood how to do this when there was a recovery disc for the OS and Applications but need help on how to get it back to a clean new system (and I do not need to save any settings or information on the new imac).
    Really appreciate the help
    CJ

Install or Reinstall Lion from Scratch
If possible backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.

  • How to Optimize a New iMac for After Effects

I bought the most tricked out brand new iMac available, with 32GB ram, an updated graphics card, everything.
But, exporting my project from After Effects takes the same amount of time on my new iMac as it did on my 2011 macbook - about 6 hours.
I know how to manipulate my export settings, so maybe I just need to change my computer's system settings to work better with After Effects.
Mac had no advice and pointed me to Adobe, so here I am.
    Any advice?

  • How long is the new imac update supposed to take?

I am currently installing the new iMac graphics firmware update, and its taken 35 minutes so far, is this normal? This seems to be a bit long to me, I've been staring at the blue screen with the moving circle and no change. Did anyone else's update take forever?

I see this on that link:
Do not shut off the power on your iMac during this update. Loss of power could result in your iMac failing to start up.
Do you have high speed internet access? If not, it probably shouldn't take 35 minutes.
From that page also:  This firmware update fixes an issue that in rare cases may cause an iMac to hang during startup or waking from sleep.
So you were having problems with your iMac before you tried installing the update?

  • How old is my new iMac?

Just purchased and received a refurbed 2.8 GHz iMac from Apple that I assumed was the most recently discontinued model. Turns out that the memory spec for the ram is 667mhz. Does this mean this refurb is from 2007? Certainly not spelled out in the description and I only figured it out when I tried to upgrade the ram to 4gig with a kit from OWC that was 800mhz bus speed and it wouldn't boot. Didn't dawn on me that the refurb would have been 2 generations old. Had I known I probably would have gone with a new machine. Does anyone know if this is standard practice for Apple? Trying to decide whether it's worth the bother to send it back or not.
    Thanks, Jim

Whether you want to keep it or not is 100% up to you, I think Apple is pretty up front on the specifications though. It's also a terrific bargain and a great machine...well I'm just saying that because it's what I have.
The difference between the machine you got and the previous generation was very small, a small bump in RAM speed (667 vs. 800) and some graphics cards options that weren't really that noticeable unless you were doing 3D applications or playing very graphics intensive games.
Without knowing how you intend to use your iMac it's difficult to say. However remember you have 14 days to return the machine so if you aren't happy with it for some reason just call Apple and arrange having it returned. My $.02 Personally I think it's a terrific buy and a great machine.
However to answer how old your computer is go to this site, type in your serial number and it will tell you the build date.

  • How to restore/reinstall new imac

Hi folks. I just bought a 4 month old iMac 21.5 500GB model and yeah, I'm blown away. Anyway the thing is that there are a lot of empty folders from previous owner and his name keeps showing up for accounts etc, so I want to wipe the HDD and restore/reinstall the OS X 10.6 and start like new again before I get into having my own stuff on it. I have 2 discs that came with it - Mac OS X Install DVD and iMac Applications Install DVD. What's the process for doing this so that all HIS stuff will be gone forever and it will become MY iMac? Thanks guys.

Wonderful - it's easy to do what you want to accomplish:
Insert the install CD; once the icon shows on the desktop, hold down the C key and choose Restart. It will now boot from the install CD. Once booted, click past the language selection and then go to Utilities (Menu bar), click on Disk Utility, and choose your internal hard drive. Click on Erase - you'll have various choices; I usually go with the 7 x write (it'll write zeroes seven times and nobody will be able to recover anything). Once the erase is done (it will take some time!!), quit Disk Utility and let the installer do its' thing. You will go through the complete install and initial setup, so you can set up your own account, etc. If you have any files, etc. that you want transferred, back them up first - during the setup, the Setup Assistant will start automatically and ask you if you want to transfer anything. If you only have a couple of files, you can also drag 'n drop them later. In any case, the setup will continue and will ask you to insert the second disk. Once all of that is finished, you'll have your own setup and everything from the previous owner will have been deleted.
