How to downgrade to SL from Lion?

I have a 21.5 inch iMac that I want to re-install so I can sell it in a clean state. Unfortunately, I lost my original install discs so I called Apple Care (who don't care AT ALL) and they told me that they no longer are able to ship out replacement discs and my only option is to purchase a SL disc on the online store. I ordered a SL install DVD and once it arrived found that my iMac won't boot from this disc.
So, I called Apple tech support again and was now told that I can't do what they had suggested I do as described above because apparetnly OS X Lion makes changes to the iMac.
I am left *really* frustrated with Apple's arrogance and unwillingness to help. The agent's only response was to point me to the legal agreement for OS X  Lion and he also stated "it's in there somewhere" but couldn't be more specific.
Has anyone been successful in obtaining replacement discs? if so, how?

Ok I get three 21.5" iMac's
1: Late 2009 - Came with 10.6.1 - 10.6.2  this computer will hold c or option key boot off the 10.6.3 retail disk and erase and install 10.6
How to erase and install Snow Leopard 10.6
2: Mid 2010 - Came with 10.6.3 - 10.6.4 this computer will NOT boot off the 10.6.3 retail disk (despite what some Apple employees say, no hardware drivers for your machine)
3: Mid 2011 - Came with 10.6.6 - 10.6.7 this computer will NOT boot off the 10.6.3 retail disk
So, I called Apple tech support again and was now told that I can't do what they had suggested I do as described above because apparently OS X Lion makes changes to the iMac.
Only to the hard drive which can be entirely erased and 10.6.x placed back on as the machine came with it.
The firmware or anything else is not changed to deny booting off the 10.6 disk, provided it's the right one.
The agent's only response was to point me to the legal agreement for OS X  Lion and he also stated "it's in there somewhere" but couldn't be more specific.
The legal agreement with Mac App Store software (which 10.7 is upgraded from 10.6.8 with) is your supposed to erase it when changing ownership.
Tell them you either need a notarized waiver or the 10.6.x machine specific disks or expect them to hear from your attorney.
Make sure you get their names or employee ID information, that usally gets their attention and a bump up to a smarter animal.
You can't open the iMac and replace the drive neither, like one can in a MacPro or MacBook Pro, so you need the correct disks.
You can choose to erase and install Lion, but it will be using your AppleID.  Lion isn't copy protected, but the MAS software is so you can't restore that.
To boot off the 10.7+ Recovery HD partition, hold command r (or option) and reboot. Use Disk Utility to erase the OS X or second partition with the Security Option Zero to remove bad sectors. The "Zero" option is one step below the maximum 7x setting.
Use the installer with a good reliable fast Internet connection to reinstall Lion.
About the Recovery HD 10.7+   How to secure delete data from the machine
This wipe and install method is usually used as a last resort when Disk Utility is unable to see or repair the drive. Or if ownership of the machine is being passed to another.
When OS X is reinstalled using this method, upon reboot the Welcome to Mac video shows and will repeat unless a new account is created.
The problem with leaving 10.7 on the machine is if the next owner is a criminal online and the cops go to Apple for information, your AppleID is the last OS X version downloaded to the machine.

Cannot be done. Downgrading is not an option.
What is the issue you think downgrading would address? Perhaps there are other approaches.

If you have the Mountain Lion installer or can download a copy from your Purchases page in App Store then simply run the installer application. Before you install select your target drive. From the Utilities menu select Disk Utility. Repartition and reformat your drive. Quit Disk Utility and continue with the installation of Mountain Lion.
Be sure to backup first because the downgrade will erase all your files.

  • Fresh Install of Mountain Lion how do I export users from Lion Server

I've been having some issues with Lion Server, mainly Kerberos related and Profile Manager. So I want to start fresh with Mountain Lion.
I've installed ML and Server, and profile manager is working now for the first time (yay!)
Now I want to Import all my existing Open Directory users from Lion, I don't want to Import the entire OD though because I think some of my kerberos issues will just get carried over to ML.
I would like to just export the Users to a file then use ML server to import users from file, but I can't see an option to export in Lion Server, I have tried doing it from WGM on Lion but the 'users' file is not recognised by ML server

Great thanks for the reply, I'll try it tonight when everyone has logged off.
Yeah I was very pleased initially with kerberos on Lion, it worked great to start with, now I'm just getting expired tickets for a default realm when some users log in, yet other users continue to work fine.
I was planning to slowly install Mountain Lion Server and test is thouroghly but I've had a bit of a disaster that if forcing me to go live with ML server quicker than I wanted to!
Basically because on Lion Server I have all the Service Data on a separate drive, and I upgraded to ML server on a backup copy of Lion Server just to see what it was like, though now I've rebooted the original Lion drive but half of the services are now screwwed up because the ML Server must have changed them, so things like Wiki Server and Profile Manager are now broken from the Lion Server boot, they just show "Error Reading Settings"
I realise now I should have moved the Service data back to the local drive before doing a test upgrade so I wouldn't have messed it up! but now it seems like my best way forward is a fresh install of ML Server

  • How to reinstall on client from Lion Server Time Machine backup?

I have a Mac Mini running Lion Server and a black MacBook running Lion. I recently needed to to perform a format and reinstall of the MacBook, so I used the MacBook's Recovery HD partition and reinstalled Lion.  I then went back to Recovery HD to reinstall apps from my Time Machine backup' which is managed by the Lion Server Mac Mini. On first attempt, I saw the right files, but in the process it hung. I recently tried to do it again, and now it claims that there are no backups found.
My suspicion is that as this is a Lion Server managed backup, it bundles the server backup and the MacBook backup in the same bundle. Revovery HD looks for the latest compete bundle, then finds the matching backup for the MacBook. However, if the Mini is continuing backups of its own, the more recent bundle backups only have mini info, not the MackBook, hence they "disappeared".
I can see older backups when I look at the backup drive, so I suspect that my MacBook files are still there.
Any suggestions on how to recover and get my MacBook files reinstalled? I'm new to this home server thing, so any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Jason

One partition 2.5TB will be my new Time Machine Backups and the other 2.5TB for iTunes Library so I never have to worry about this again.
Your worry now is what will you do when the single hard drive containing both your library and its backup makes a screeching sound one day and is toast, or get stolen?
    from a YouTube video
Uh-oh, those unspecific and sometimes incorrect YouTube videos.  I dislike those things. I watched one once and some kid droned on in a barely audible monotone for about 5 minutes to show how to do something to which I could have typed instructions in two sentences.

  • Downgrading to SL from Lion

I will tell you anybody who asks don't upgrade to lion from sl.  I did this and now cannot connect at my college network anylonger.  Apple can't help and IT dept at school can't help.  It works everywhere else and worked fine there until I upgraded.  Apple told me to reinstall SL, which I have tried but now my computer tells me it can't open my disc because a newer version of mac os x is installed.  Can anybody tell me how to erase my computer and reinstall the SL op system.

You need to copy your user files off to a external storage drive first and disconnect.
To boot off the 10.6  disk you need to hold the c key down
    Follow the
Restoring OS X - 10.6  "fresh install method"
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/16276201#16276201
    Some tips:
Do NOT restore from TimeMachine that's been connected to Lion, erase and reset it to Snow Leopard when your back on it.
For your iPhoto, you may need to right click on the iPhoto Library and  "show package contents" to copy out the Originals, then import them into the new 10.6 fresh installed iPhoto.
For iTunes you may need to copy only your music out of the iTunes folder and reimporting into 10.6 iTunes, this means losing playlists.
If you assign "groupings" to your music files on iTunes Lion, it's a tag that sticks to the music files themselves, when you transfer back just the music into iTunes on 10.6 then all you have to do is create Smart Playlists based upon the grouping tag to restore your playlists.
If resintalling Snow Leopard is beyond your ability, you can find a Mac person on campus that can assist you.
Some college networks use software that hasn't been updated to work with 10.7, so they don't know what you are when you try to connect, thus they cut you off.
Your likely right you have to return to Snow Leopard until the college gets updated software, whenever that occurs.

  • How to import Mail rules from Lion to Mavericks?

I tried importing my several dozen rules from OS X 10.7.5 to Mavericks 10.9.4. I tried the method described by SECollins7 here:
Import Lion Mail rules into Mavericks Mail?
It did not work. Nor does manually copying the text from «MessageRules.plist» to «SyncedRules.plist». They just do not appear in the rules settings in Mail in Mavericks.
Is there a way to import rules anyway?
    Thanks for any hints!

This issue is caused by a combination of two things:
The file used in previous versions of OS X to store local (not iCloud-based) Mail rules is not used in Mavericks.
The migration process doesn't transfer the rules from the old file to the new one, which has a different format.
You may be able to recover the Mail rules by taking the steps below.
Warning: Do not use this procedure if you synchronize Mail rules with other devices via iCloud.
    Quit Mail if it's running.
    Back up all data.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    cd Library/Mail/V2/MailData; /usr/libexec/PlistBuddy -x -c 'Print :rules' MessageRules.plist > SyncedRules.plist
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing the key combination command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear. You can then quit Terminal. Test.
