Is it possible to download apps for iphone without using itunes ?
I tried to download from a place where itunes can't be installed in a series of lan connected computers. Also plenty of internet content can be downloaded for free

Download the apps on your syncing computer and then sync to the iPod. Note that you can only sync apps for the one syncing computer you use with the iPod. You can manage music and videos among different computer.

1. Select Apps in Apps store icon on the phone.
2. Choose App to download
3. At "Instal" button press it QUICKLY in blocks of 3 presses, keep doing this until it overides the i-tune warning, then if there were legacy versions for os 4.2.1 it says something like "this app is for os 5 or above", but gives you a choice to download an older version. Select this.
Sometimes it says the Apps is for newer hardware, requiring motion sensors, front camera's etc.. just got to accept these ones don't work on legacy hardware.
4. Download does not work for all Apps, esp. newer ones written after os 4.21 or if the developer doesn't have the vintage apps archived- e.g. Instagram downloads, but won't run (wants to update), or WSJ and Barrons stalls and goes through a download loop.
I am not making this up, as I bought this old 3g unit on e-bay, after a complete factory reset I now have:
- Tune-in, FB, Pandora,Skype, Twitter, Bloomberg, MSNBC, Forbes, Marketwatch, Viber, amongst a host of other news apps like LATimes.
Some Apps will download ok, and then at activation says its too old and no longer supported e.g Whats App.
Otherwise, good luck. Tune-in, Pandora, Skype and Twitter is all I need to keep me happy with an old unit, even though I've got newer hardware. Never let anything die unnaturally.

My middle son is off to college this week (in Japan) and will be taking with him a new MacBook Air. Naturally, he wants to also take his music and apps that he has purchased over the years, which now reside on my iMac (the family's media hub) along with music and apps for all the other members of the family.

I have an iPhone 5 and I have downloaded an album from another computer which is not a purchase I made from iTunes, it was a CD download on the computer that I put on my phone through iTunes. That computer is no longer functioning. I want to get that album from my iPhone to my computer, but I do not have a disk drive so I want to download the music from my iPhone to iTunes. I can't figure out how to do this.

The iPhone is not a storage/backup device. The sync is one way - computer to iPhone.
The only exception is iTunes purchases.
You may be able to buy a third party program at your risk to extract the music.
Did you not maintain a backup copy of your old computer?

With the launch today of Amazon into the download market - would be interesting to see if they venture into an iPhone app.

I seriously doubt that Apple would approve such an app for the iPhone and Touch that would compete direct with the iTunes Store. Purchasing MP3s from Amazon on your computer that are imported into iTunes and transferred to your iPhone via the iTunes sync process is one thing, providing a direct avenue to make purchases from a download competitor is another.

Launch iTunes on your computer and go the apps section of the iTunes library. Right click on the app that you want to delete and you should be able to delete it. I think that you can also click on the app and then go to Edit>Delete to remove the app.

Help! My wife's WinXP box has suddenly stopped connecting to her iTunes store account - getting the error message "cannot connect" etc etc.
I've posted the diagnostic log further below, but in summary:-
- Actual internet connectivity is fine - websites, email etc.
- I am able to connect to MY iTunes account on my MacBook Pro
- she also tried connecting using her iPhone, to update some apps over wifi, but they were stalled on "waiting/updating", even after about 20 mins. So she backed-out of that, had to switch the phone off & back on. We read that it would be wise to "log out" of the iTunes store on teh actual iPhone handset (in settings), then log back in, so the account at Apples' end wasn't "stuck".
- Never had ANY problems connecting to her iTunes store account before now (last few days).
- No updates performed on her laptop, changes to preferences, settings etc that might have caused this.
- Laptop is NOT used away from our house, and our wifi/router has not been breached as we live in the middle of the countryside, so I'm happy with security of the network.

Re-arranging apps for iPhone through iTunes does nothing

I've spent probably 30 minutes on two occasions with my phone hooked up to my MacBook Air rearranging apps only to find that hitting sync does nothing. In fact, it just resets everything I did in iTunes while doing nothing for my phone. I don't understand. It seems like a pretty simple task to complete. Plug the phone in, go to the apps section, re-arrange the screens, and done. But clearly this isn't working for me.
Am I missing something? Is this a bug/common?

OK, so "approved" doesn't mean that the app is compatible with the current OS? Is "approved" only something that happens when the app is made available fir the first time. Then as the OS's are updated the apps may stop working or be very buggy andthey are still "approved"?
All apps are compatible with the current OS. If the developer for a music streaming app has not updated the app to make use of iOS4 API's in order for the app to run in the background, the app will not run in the background but the app will still work. All new app submittals and all app update submittals are reviewed and approved by Apple. An app update will not be available via the App store unless Apple has reviewed and approved the update. I don't know how much extensive testing is done since the majority of new app submittals and app update submittals are approved within a week.
In wich case "approved" doesn't really mean anything useful for the user right?

Wrong. This doesn't mean an app won't include ANY bugs. This ensures the app does what the developer says the apps does - what is included with the app's description. This also ensures an app does not include malware and does not make use of private iPhone API's. I don't know how much testing is done, but some testing is certainly done which can't be overly extensive since the overwhelming majority of apps and app update submittals are approved within a week.
