How to download video?

On my previous hard drive with an earlier Mac OS, I had found apps that allowed me to download a variety of videos in nearly all formats -- .wmv, .mpg, .flv and more. With a new hard drive and SnowLeopard, most will not download. I don't recall what I used before; any advice?

Do you mean download or play?  Because it doesn't matter what format the download is in to just download it.  It downloads as supplied by the source.  Expanding and playing the downloads in an entirely different operation.
They are usually compressed in some format (.dmg, .zip, .rar, and others). So you need to expand them.  OSX already provides a means to expand most zips -- just double click them. That are many third party utiltiies for .rar's (I currently like UnrarX).
For playing various video formats consider adding Perian and Flip4Mac (for wmv's).  Also use a more general video player like vlc.

    How did you get it onto the phone in the first place? You had to have synced it from a computer if it wasn't purchased from the iTunes store. You should still have it in your iTunes library...
    Other than for items purchased from the iTunes store, media sync is one way, computer to iPhone. There is no supported method of getting other music off of the phone to a computer. If you google, you may find some useful utilities that will help.
    If the media resides on a different computer and you're changing the one you are going to sync with, just back up the iTunes library and transfer it to the new computer.

    2. Open iMovie and create a name for your clips.
    3. Be sure cam is set on playback -NOT PC mode
    4. Turn on cam. At this point your Mac should
    recognize your cam and will
    show in the iMovie screen as "ready to capture",
    or words to that effect.
    . Use the on screen controls to start the capture
    process. The computer will
    control the camera.
    ur Mac captures the video in real time, meaning that
    if your total clips are 45 minutes of tape, it will
    take 45 minutes to capture to your Mac. Hope that
    helps you. Nice cam, by the way. Lucky are those of
    us that got one before Panasonic discontinued it and
    dummied down their consumer line of miniDV cams.

    Not sure if the iPad can download from on-line sources. Download to your computer & then import to the iPad.
    One way to import from your computer. You can use a USB flash drive & the camera connection kit.
    Plug the USB flash drive into your computer & create a new folder titled DCIM. Then put your movie/photo files into the folder. The files must have a filename with exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension (i.e., my-movie.mov; DSCN0164.jpg).
    Now plug the flash drive into the iPad using the camera connection kit. Open the Photos app, the movie/photo files should appear & you can import. (You can not export using the camera connection kit.)

I installed Get Tube, which could not even be activated. vixy.net (an online FLV converter) worked for two video clips but 80% of the time it gets hung up in an infinite loop and does not work. Is there anything out there, freeware or not, that actually works consistently?

    Hi ceeg - remember that you do have to add the .flv extension to the file, and then after it plays in QT, in order to use it in iMovie you must export it from QT as a DV Stream file.
