How to dump corrupted files/folders

mac os x 10.5.8  2.6 ghz 2 gb. When normal tasks were not functioning correctly, I used to call applecare. They would have me go through some steps and dump some files or folders and then restart the computer. After this, everything would work great. I cannot find my notes on doing this procedure. Applecare said that since I did not use virus protection, some folders get corrupted and when we trash them, new ones are created. I need to do this again since the computer is not working correctly.
Syptoms like
email typing problems in safari
slow actions of the cursor- slow to highlight items when cursor rolls over them
slow startup
Hope for help
Thank you

Whatever the problem is, it's not remotely related to not using virus protection. Using anti-virus software does not protect you against such issues. I'm not sure what that particular AppleCare rep was smoking when he told you that!
It's difficult to say what the problem might be without more information. What I would recommend doing first is ensure that you have a good set of up-to-date backups. You need to protect your data, in case whatever is going wrong damages it.
Once you have done that, try to see if any of the things in my Mac Performance Guide help you at all. If they don't, let us know exactly what you tried and what the results were.

  • How do I zip file folders to send to Windows users? They can never open!

How do I zip file folders to send to PC users, they always have problems and can't open.

Are you trying to use one of the stuffit formats (like .sitx as you said) or do you actually want to make a .zip file which would be more logical if you are giving it to a windows user (unless they too have stuffit to stuffit expander of course)?
If you do a search for "zip" at macupdate.com you will find a whole bunch of zip tools, some of which advertise they make windows compatible zip files.  For example BetterZip and WinZip Mac Edition can make windows-compatible zip files.
As I initially mentioned if you have stuffit and the windows receiver has stuffit (or stuffit expander) I don't know why there would be a problem creating a stuffit file on a mac and expanding it on windows (ignoring any possible problems introduced in the method of transmission).

  • How do I add files/folders  from school to my Dropbox on iPad

I've emailed downloaded lectures for school to myself...Dropbox says I can create files/ folders and I am at a loss as to how to do this. I want to save all lectures/ material to my iPad and move them to Dropbox...I have win zip and iCab too...just don't have the knowledge to use them

With Dropbox installed, Go to the mail that you received, click and hold on the attachement and you will receive an Open in ... dialog, select Dropbox or folder in dropbox.
Go to Dropbox App and verify.

  • How to find corrupted files

With my 2 yr old macbook, I cannot update my recently purchased iphone 4 when an ipdate is available. I get message: "...device isn't eligble for requested rebuild." I have worked with Apple store Genius bar staff 4 times with no sucess.  Latest attempt was to erase HD, reinstall OS X, and only reinstall itunesin orde to test the update feature.  In this scenario, with only itunes on the macbook, the update is successful.  However, after  I drag and dropped many, but not all, of my programs and files from the saved data on external HD back onto the macbook, and tried an update on a different iphone 4 (in our family plan), same problem.  So I guess somewhere in what I transferred back onto  the macbook is a bad file.  I suppose I could go through the tedious process of transferring one program/file at a time onto the macbook, then trying the update again, but I can't do an update after each transfer because there is no new update to download, as they come out only every so often.
Is there a program that can scan the external HD to find bad/corrupted files?  I have Spring cleaning and Drive Genius, neither of which seem to have the features to do such a scan (they do have disk scan, which I have run, along with Apple's Tech Tool, and all such scan operations have show no problems)
(to complicate this, this apparent bad file on this macbook likely came from my white intel based iMac.  I first discovered this "updating of the iphone 4 problem" on the imac.  When we bought the macbook, we bought one to one and had the Apple store do a complete transfer from the imac to the macbook in its first time set up.  I purchased the iphone 4 in Sep 2010 and first tried an update in Nov 2010, which failed.  I have been back to the Apple Genius bar 5 times since then with this problem.  During one of those visits, Genius suggested trying to do just the update of my iphone 4 from the macbook, and that is when we discovered the macbook had the same problem.  So this bad file likely was transferred to the macbook in that initial set up transfer.  Furthermore, this macbook is still under AppleCare, yet that does not seem to mean anything to the Genius Bar.  Tomorrow I will call applecare about this, but in the meantime, if anyone out there has a clue, I'm much obliged.

I didn't know of this console feature.  I see Mozy.backup doing something.  I had tried Mozy on this imac a long time ago and stopped using it, and I thought I had deleted it.  When I just now searched for mozy, all I get is .pdf file.  Do you think this could be the problem and how would I get totally rid of mozy files?  Thanks

  • How to delete corrupted files on ipod classic

Somehow the "index" of files on my Ipod Classic HD got corrupted so none of my music, video, etc files showed up on the Ipod.  The library, and all the files, would display in Itunes so I followed the instructions and copied them over to an external HD.  Then, when I synced the Ipod, about 1/3 of my available HD on the Ipod shows up as yellow in the space available indicator.  Fortunately I had enough capacity to re-sync....just with very little free space on the HD afterward
    My question is:
Should I reset the Ipod and then copy the library media folder from the external HD back to my PC?....and then sync?  Will that get rid of the corrupted files so I regain the capacity on the Ipod HD?
    Thanks for any help

    Hi arakis,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
In this situation I would restore your iPod back to factory settings and then sync the music back onto it. It shouldn’t matter if the music is located on the computer hard drive or an external hard drive, as long as the iTunes Media Folder is pointed to the correct location to access the music from iTunes. The first article below explains the process of restoring your iPod back to factory settings and the second article shows the location (and how to change the location) of the iTunes Media Folder.

  • I have a new ipad and want to create files for my documents I brought over from my Mac. How do I create file folders?

I would like to create file folders for my documents I brought over to my ipad from my desktop Mac. I downloaded pages and neu.annotate. My files synced without a problem. PDF articles I put in neu.annotate and pages documents into pages but I would like to organize into folders like on my desktop. How can I do this on the ipad3?

Unlike a 'normal' computer the iPad doesn't have a file system and everything on it has to be stored/associated within an app, you can't have separate folders of documents/files on your iPad's homescreens. If the apps that you have support it then you could possibly use Dropbox to store your documents within a folder structure, but you'd then need internet access in order to access them.

  • How can I copy file/folders from and to hard drives? How can I have two or more windows of explorer so that I can drag and drop from one hard drive to another?

    Hi,
I am a new customer (purchased last week) of MacBookPro (latest) and its my first ever Apple laptop.
I am almost lost to find the operating tools.
    1. How can I copy files from hard drive to computer and vis-a-versa?
    2. Only can browse one but how can I have two or more browses at the same time like in MS windows?
    3. No right click works on track pad?
    4. Is there application/ program compatible to MS office? If so how much and how can I purchase?
    5. Is there AutoCAD program that is compatible to MS Window AutoCAD? and if yes how much and how can I purchase?
I will very much appreciate if you could email me the with the solution/answers please.
    Regards,
    Khagendra Limbu

    1) For some reason this happens once in a while with FAT32 enabled external harddrives. I have no idea why this happens but it most easily solved by reformatting the drive. First make sure you've copied everything from the external drive to your internal harddrive. You've done this earlier so I assume you know how to do this.
Now the reformatting part. Open Finder and go to Applications. Look for the folder called "Utilities". Click on it. In it you find a program called "Disk Utility". Click on it. Now look for the external drive. You probably see two entries for the disk. Click on the one that contains the name of the drive NOT the one that describes the disk (Like for example 320.07 GB Samsung S2 Portable Media).
Now you see four tabs in the righthand part of the window. They're called "First Aid", "Erase", "RAID" and "Restore". Click on "Erase". This opens the tab with (amongst others) a dropdownbox (Format) and a textbox (Name) . In the dropdownbox select "Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Take note! This selection disables usage of the drive with Windows PC's. If your goal is to share the drive with Windows PC's select the MS-DOS FAT option.
Enter a label for the drive in the textbox Name. Now click on the button "Erase". This will format the drive.
Now when it's done you can copy back all the items you've copied to your internal harddrive earlier.
    2) Opening two windows like Explorer on Windows is opening two Finder windows on the Mac. Simply click on the background. In the menubar you items like 'Finder", "File", "Edit", "View", et cetera. Click on "File" and "New Finder Window". Do this two times. Alternatively you can click on the background and press CMD-N two times.
    3) You can right click on the trackpad. This however depends on if you've enabled the feature in System Preferences. In the topmenubar click on the Apple icon and select "System Preferences". Now look for Trackpad in Hardware. Click on it. You see three tabs with the names "Point & Click", "Scroll & Zoom" and "More Gestures". Select "Point & Click" and look for "Secondary Click'. Make sure it is checked and make sure it has written "Click or tap with two fingers" written beneath "Secondary Click". When you're done exit System Preferences. Now select the background and tap with two fingers on the trackpad. This should open the contextuel menu with options like "New Folder", "Get Info" et cetera.

  • How to view all files / folders using a Jtree

    Hello,
I am developing a 'windows explorer' type application and need to create a JTree which displays all files and folders on a local and remote PC in the same way that windows explorer works.
Can anyone recommend a good way to read all files / folders and display them in a JTree?
    Thanks in advance!!!!!!

Can anyone recommend a good way to read all files /
folders and display them in a JTree? Don't even try to read all the files at once; it could take too long and could consume a lot of memory. Create a JTree model that only reads the children of node when required. I use a simple cache (I hate using a cache but in this case it is needed) to minimise the number of disk reads but I use a TreeExpansionListener to remove items from the cache when a node is about to be collapsed e.g.
        public void treeWillCollapse(TreeExpansionEvent event)
            Object lastElement = event.getPath().getLastPathComponent();
            childCache_.remove(lastElement);
        }

  • How to delete corrupted files backed up on Time Machine.

    Hi,
I'm using Fusion to run Windows XP Home. This morning I tried to open it and was told the file was corrupted and couldn't be used. I had to force quit both Fusion and Windows XP. Luckily I could go back a few days and use TM machine to restore an earlier version of Windows XP and now it's working perfectly again. I'd like to delete the corrupted file but I'm afraid I might delete something critical and I don't to delete all backups. Any suggestions?
    Thanks

    Welcome to the Apple boards:
If you did it correctly, the bad file is overwritten by the "new" one from TM.
If not, you should be able to find it and temporarily drag it to your desktop.
If nothing bad happens after a day or so, then trash the desktop windows file.
If you are looking to delete the bad file from TM, open TM and find the bad file and select it. Then select delete You will be prompted to delete only that file or all previous backups. Select only the one you have chosen.
Be sure TM has backed up your new Windows system before deleting it and there is little you can lose.
I would also like to compliment you on using TM and using it properly.
Were everyone as conscientious as you, most of the issues on the board would resolve themselves.
    Kudos.

  • IBook need a diet. How to find biggest files/folders?

Hi -- this may seem like a silly question, but is there a way to search for the largest files/folders on my iBook (latest version of Tiger)? I'd like to find the offending bloat and get rid of it.
A couple of weeks ago, I had 20GB left, now I've got 14GB, and I don't know what I've done to get there. I've done the "get info" thing on various folders, but haven't found any that are particularly bloated.
Is there an app (preferably freeware, natch.) that can search for apps/files/folders by size? Or is this a capability that's already in Tiger?
    Thanks!

You can also use Terminal to find big directories.
The following command finds the top-10 directories:
    du -S | sort -nr | head
Please note that I am using the fink version of du.

  • How to find corrupted file causing problem with FCP?

I couldn't use Log and Transfer of FCP 7.0.3 for AVCHD from Canon Vixia.
By starting from different user account Log and Transfer worked which means I have a corrupted file in the directory of original user account causing the error of Log and Transfer. What will be the easiest way to find the corrupted file?
    Milan

If the new user acct test allows you to work with the software, it usually means a dead pref file. The easiest way to deal with these issues is to run Digital Rebellion's Preference Manager software (free) to delete the preference files in FCP.
Open it up and look under the FCP settings in the Advanced tab. It gives you the option of selectively deleteing the various pref files associated with the app.
First back up all your FCP prefs then start deleting them one by one. Once you figure out which one is the problem, restore all the others.

  • Mini Bridge: how to clear recent files/folders?

    Hi all,
I am a new user of Photoshop CS5.1 Extended and have a question about Mini Bridge. My OS is Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit, and I'm using the 64-bit version of Photoshop.
My question is: how do I clear the Recent Files and Recent Folders lists from the navigation pane of Mini Bridge?
In Bridge itself I have set the 'number of recent items' to zero. I can't see any equivalent setting in Mini Bridge.
The reason for asking is that prior to purchasing and installing the Production Premium Suite, I demoed the Web Premium Suite, including Fireworks. Even though Fireworks is now uninstalled and I can find no reference to it in the Windows Registry, Fireworks has its own submenu of recent files in Mini Bridge. I can't figure out where this information is stored.
    Any ideas? Thanks.

Ok, I just figured this out.
In Bridge (not Mini Bridge), it's the Reveal Recent toolbar icon, then "Clear Recent Files" and/or "Clear Recent Folders".
This is a bit counter-intuitive, considering that "number of recent items to display" in Bridge was already set to zero, but hey ho.
Just thought I'd post this in case anyone else finds the thread and is curious.

  • How to retrieve "corrupt" files?

I have Iphoto 5.0.4 and it had been working fine ever since we got our powerbook in 2003. Two rolls ago, I imported some vacation pics of my kids, then went through them and deleted those that I didn't like.
A week later, I wanted to look at them again and found "grey boxes" instead of pics thumbnails. Iphoto freezes everytime I try to open them, the colorful wheel keeps on spinning for a while.
I tried to Iphoto library folder to open them but a box comes up and says that's it's corrupted or not recogniazable format. It also shows on the description that it's 0kb but when I open iphoto and manage to click on the pic/grey box and it shows the regular file size.
Can anybody help me fix, or recover those pics as they're great memories or our family vacation? I would really appreciate it. BTW, I tried rebuilding the library but it didn't work. Please help me.

I am hoping Larry can help me. I am new to the discussions but now am worried after reading this that I could have done something really wrong. I have been having trouble with my importing lately. After 28,000 photos, this is a first. When they download they seem to lose bits of the shot and have greyed out or transparent areas in them. I am getting the recovered photos folders, and have deleted from iphoto the corrupt pics, then i have gone into my library as well and deleted them there. Is that the wrong thing to do? The reason I did was when I tried to download them again (they are fine on my camera) they won't download because iphoto thinks they are already there. So I deleted them and downloaded again today and now different ones are corrupting during the download. So I tried a different camera thinking it was maybe my camera and now I am realizing it is iphoto or my mac. What is the problem? I am on iphoto 8 on a powerbook G4 with an external gdrive for pics. The gdrive is at 122MB out of 160 total. I did read that you mention to download them using a USB memory card adapter. Will this fix the problem? Help?

  • How to create new file folders for pics

My sd card may be corrupt, but I tried to move pictures to new folders and I get the message "Directory full".  How would I normally make new folders so that I can have separate folders for different subjects?

    Hi ssk600...
Attach your BB Handheld using the USB and go enable Mass Storage. You should be able to mount the phone with a drive letter on your PC. Once that is done, you can create folders using the Windows explorer shell. Create the folder and move the pictures you want into the new folder using the Explorer in XP or Vista. Once your done managing your new folder and moving your pictures, remove the USB. You will be able to see the new folder once you open up Media icon and menu your pictures on the Media Card.
