How to duplicate a dvd-r with disk utility

I made a home movie DVD+/-R. I actually was able to duplicate this one. I now have another DVD+/-R I'd like to duplicate and don't seem to be able to use the same steps I used for the other one.
I insert disc> quit DVD player> open disk utility> choose the drive (not the DVD altho when the first one failed, I tried choosing the disc itself)> click File> choose New> choose Disk Image from "name of my dvd"> rename disc in Save As field> choose "name of my dvd" in drop down destination field> choose DVD/CD Master from Image Format field> click save. The disc starts up like it's reading it and then I get the following error message box
Unable to create "SuperDrive". (no such file or directory) -- despite the fact I renamed it the error message always default to the drive name
or
Unable to create "DVD Video Recording". (invalid argument)
or
Unable to create "SuperDrive". (invalid argument) -- when I choose the VIDEO_TS file in the finder space just under the drop down destination field.
I also tried the (do all steps up to choose "click File") click New Image from the tool bar route, but I end up at the same drop down scenario I got before and still no duplication.
I did it once (the disk image is still on my computer to prove it) but can not for the life of me do it again. I've searched boards on the net, used search here but was told no answer was found for my question, so here I am. I have a MacBookPro running Mountain Lion 10.8.5. Nothing has changed since I duplicated the other disc except for the usual updates so I'm at a loss at the moment.

Try the procedure in this article:

  • How do i import dvds made with disk utility to idvd maker

I copied video from my flash drive movie camera to the disk utility and made dvds that work on any dvd player. How come I cannot import any of these files to idvd?

files on a DVD that play in dvd players are MPEG 2 files
    iDVD does not ingest that
you could use an app like toast to convert the files into QT files that iDVD would accept
however, qualitywise it will not look very crisp
import your files from the flash drive camera (i suspect it uses the AVCHD-codec?) into iMovie and from there go ti iDVD

  • How do you setup RAID 10 with Disk Utility?

I read a post that indicated a Mac Pro user created two mirrors and then striped them with Disk Utility to create a RAID 10.
I tried this but Disk Utiity will not allow me to stripe the two mirrors. I tried dragging and using the "+" button. In each case no RAID 10 could be created.
Could someone list the exact procedure for creating a RAID 10 using Disk Utility?
    Thank you

I have Mac OS X Build 8K1124 and I believe that came with my Mac Pro as I've not required a Mac OS X update via Software Update.
Now, I have to honest, I'm not entirely sure that was the exact process. As you can appreciate I don't have another 4 drives to try this again so I'll do my best here.
It's definitely right up until the part of making the mirrors and unmounting them, that I know for sure. What I don't remeber is what I had selected to get to the RAID tab to create the Stripe Set. I believe I had one of the mirror partitions selected, that is, either "disk5" or "disk6", which brought up the RAID tab that then allowed me to create the stripe set.
I then created the set and then dragged the mirrors (I believe disk5 and disk6) into the set.
If you can't do this can you let me know how your situation deviates?

  • How to repair a filevault sparsebundle with disk utility?

I've been experiencing some oddness with my filevault home directory so I wanted to drop into disk utility and run a check/repair on it. The odd thing is, when I log out and into another account, the sparsebundle says 0k in the finder, and appears to be a directory. When I sudo to cd into the directory, it appears to work, but I remain in /Users/username. When I drag the sparsebundle into disk utility, it appears in the bar on the left side of the screen, but clicking repair or verify causes the progress bar to activate for a split second then stop with no error message. Trying to mount the sparsebundle yields a "No supported socket" message.
I am able to log into the account. When I do that, in /users/.username directory, I can see the sparsebundle with its true size, 35 gigabytes.
I used to repair sparseimages; is the described behavior "normal" for sparse bundles and if so, is there a way to get them repaired in disk utility? Or is this odd behavior on the part of this particular sparse bundle?

Well a bundle and a disk image are both, likewise, "very different things" than actual independent storage devices, but disk utility is able to reason out that it needs to ask for the password for the disk image and open it in order to repair it. There's no reason why it couldn't be as bright when it comes to handling a sparseimage.
You are correct that mounting it first with a terminal command (sudo hdiutil mount -nomount -readwrite /path/to/sparseimage) causes it to be repairable in disk utility. Disk utility can figure out by itself that it needs to open the disk image when you repair a disk image, but apparently not with a sparsebundle. I disagree with your tone above that implies that somehow one would not expect disk utility to function robustly and be actually capable of repairing Apple file system-based virtual disk images (whether a single file or in a directory format, doesnt matter), and that one should be expected to dig up a terminal command and mount it manually before being able to tinker with it. That's not reasonable to expect of the user for a routine task such as repairing a disk image.
However on doing so, disk utility can repair the disk.

  • Help burning DVD with Disk Utility

I have a Mac Mini with a SuperDrive.
System Profiler confirms that I can write a DVD-R:
But Disk Utility won't let me burn a DVD. With a brand spanking new blank DVD-R in the drive, it says "Write Ability: Read Only":
What's the problem, and how do I burn my .dmg disk image?
Mac Mini Intel Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Eject the disk.
In disk Utility, select the disk image file and click the burn button.
A drop down window should appear and ask for a blank disk. Insert the disk.
Soon the window should change and show burn options, and the burn button at the bottom right should turn blue. Choose any options you need and click the blue burn button.

  • Cant restore my macbook with Disk utility and my .dmg image

My macbook would not boot anymore. Stuck on gray screen with apple logo, spinning wheel and a loading bar for a while after shutting off.
I was able to get to Disk Utility in the recovery mode and, after a while, was able to make an image of my filesin an attempt to back them up.
The .dmg was put on an external and i checked it on my imac, i could open the .dmg file and browse all my files from my macbook, so those are safe!
After that i tried to wipe the SSD of my macbook and put the image back but that didn't work, also some resource is busy errors.
After trying this a few times without succes i figured i'd try to do a clean install. This worked.
My macbook air is working again but if Iuse Disk Utility in the recovery now and try and restore my image (.dmg file) it gives me Restore Failure; An error (-16) occured (resource busy) as well. I also tried to copy the dmg onto my macbook and run disc utility when booted into OSX. I open up the back up .dmg with Disk utility, then i go to my macbooks partition (Macontiosh HD) and use that as a destination and drag the mounted image as the source as shown on the image below. Am I doing something wrong here?
Doing this i get an error as well: (-119,930,878) Resource busy as you can see.
What can i do to get my image back on my macbook? Any 3rd party software?
I considered just transferring the files after opening the .dmg file but this works only for documents and not for programs and settings of the default apps.
I've looked all over the Internet and it seems more people have had this error but then with making the image, they also suggest unmounting the destination disk before trying to restore but my destination is Macintosh HD, i cant really unmount that can i?
    Thanks in advance!

To make a clone, in the future you need to use a program like superduper or carbon copy cloner.
Either program makes an identical clone while preserving certain system files and marking/indicating to OS X that the clone is bootable.
Using Disk Utility to make a DMG was a good idea, but this will not yield a bootable image.
If Disk Utility could do a 1:1 copy of everything, then people would be using it to rip/duplicate DVDs.
But Disk Utility does not (it leaves out certain invisible/system files), hence it cannot duplicate/clone a hard drive or DVD.

  • Windows 8 Consumer Preview 32-bit not installing with Disk Utility

I have a late-2011 13" MacBook Pro (Mac OS X 10.7.4). I downloaded the Windows 8 32-bit Consumer Preview ISO from the Microsoft official website (so there is nothing illegal there) and I am trying to burn it to a Maxell 4.7GB (up to 16x) DVD-R using Disk Utility. I moved the ISO to the left menu and I selected it. When I press Burn, Disk Utility pops up an error message and says "'Unable to burn Windows8-Consumer-Preview-32bit-English.iso.' (not recognized)" Am I doing something wrong?
Also, it would also be cool if someone could tell me how to install Windows 8 Consumer Preview 32-bit (English) the easiest way. You really don't have to do this but is this guide (http://reviewnotepad.wordpress.com/2012/02/05/how-to-install-windows-8-on-a-mac- with-bootcamp/  and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yYiR-4jqMuM&feature=related) and video accurate?
Thanks for all the help in advance!!

Lower speed writing didn't work for me (although I admittedly have an off brand super cheap DVD / Blu-ray burner) and I had to build a bootable USB on a PC at work.  I followed this non-how-to to get it running on my air:

  • Can't Archive with Disk Utility

I want to create a .dmg of my hard drive with Disk Utility before installing 10.5. I have tried to select the device, the volume and individual folders on the drive and Disk utility won't create a .dmg of them to the same drive, a DVD or external drives. It reports an error : resource in use.
The same is true if I boot from the 10.5 install disk and try to install with archiving from the 10.5 install DVD. How can I back up my files before installing 10.5?

I have never done it but it's possible that you have to create the .dmg using the startup disk?
You are trying to archive a running system - that may be the problem
Reboot with the Tiger disk (not Leopard) and use the DU on that disk.
    See if that works.

  • Can Time Capsule hard drive be accessed with Disk Utility? I'm having issues...

How does one mount , inspect , verify , and possibly repair a Time Capsule hard drive  with Disk Utility ?
My 500Gb 1st gen Time Capsule  ( used wireless with Airport)  has quit backing up new data . ( iMac Core2Duo, Snow Leopard) .  TC  says it needs 238 Gb of available space, but only has 35 Gb available. So it quit doing new  incremental backup altogether. It's almost like it wants to start over.
Airport connection seems good.  Time Capsule seems healthy enough ( for being 3.5 years old) .  I really dont want to lose the data on the existing backup.
What is the nature of this glitch ?

I'm sorry , LaP , but " Time Capsule become too full " is not the cause of my problem .
In fact, I just got done pruning the iMac system hard drive a little  to free up some  10 Gb of new space , yet created only maybe 1-2 Gb of new data to archive. The TC had been doing regular daily backups without issue and Time Machine  was showing me stuff from about ten days back.
The TC informed me it needed 235 Gb of space but only had 34 Gb available. That 235 Gb needed is totally in error.  My problem more resembles corrupt hard disk directories . Maybe Permissions ?  which is why I asked about using Disk Utility.
Yes, I do need a newer larger TC, but pigs don't fly and money does not grow on trees to make tha happen. The backup I have now is fine and should work if I need to restore anything in the forseeable. New data will not be archived, alas.

  • When burning iso with disk utility, the audio is off!

I have an ISO file that works fine when I mount it or watch it on VLC.   If I burn it using windows (in parallels) it is fine...
But when I burn it with disk utility, the audio is off by a second or so.  I can't figure this out since it is a disk image.  there shouldn't be a way to dissociate the audio.  I did have a previous version of the iso file that was off..  Is it possible that I am trying to burn an iso file and it is burning a mounted version from before (even though I am choosing this from the finder?)
    Any thoughts or suggestions?
I though macs just work.  Seems a bit more complicated.

I don't recall for sure about "disk utility" and DVD and/or Bluray. It seems to me that Toast is usually used.

  • Can't UN-Mount internal HD to fix it with Disk Utility

    Hi all,
When booting from an external Firewire back-up clone disk, I am not able to un-mount the internal (original) HD in order to verify or repair it with Disk Utility because supposedly it is in use by some application.
This is no big deal because if I boot in safe mode (from my external back-up disk) I am able to use Disk Utility on it, but I am very curious as to how can I know which is the application that is preventing DU from un-mounting it ?
    Thanks in advance

If your Spotlight is working just fine, I wouldn't monkey with it. Putting the drive into the Privacy pane adds an instruction ON THE DRIVE to turn off Spotlight, so when you reboot to the drive Spotlight would be turned off, turning it back on would force the drive to be re-indexed.
You can try using the Terminal from your Utilities folder to discover what is in use, using the list open files command, "lsof" and the drive name. Thus I have an internal drive named Panther, so if I type this into Terminal:
    lsof "/Volumes/Panther"
and hit the Return key, it returns the following information:
    Finder 112 francine 15r VDIR 14,19 68 540057 /Volumes/Panther/.Trashes/501
The only file open on the drive is actually the drive's trash folder, and it is open in the Finder. I think any mounted drive would have that open.

  • Partitioning with disk utility

hi there.. i wonder, can i partition my primary hard drive with disk utility live? (i mean not from the leopard dvd on boot) i want to create a new partition that would be less than the amount of free space i have, while running leopard (my mac os shouldn't be damaged i think), is that possible? and safe? thanx

    cukerko,
If you have an Intel Mac, the answer is yes. Intel Macs must have internal drives that use the GUID Partition Map, and these can be dynamically partitioned and re-sized under Leopard's Disk Utility.
It is relatively safe, but it is an action that modifies the drive at a low level. In other words, one would be foolish to attempt a re-partitioning or re-size without a good and current backup on hand. Provided you have such a backup, there's no reason not to create your partition.

  • Formatting with Disk utility

I want to format an external FW HD so it can be read on a Mac AND PC, how do I do this with Disk Utility.
    Thanks in advance.

In the Disk Utility, choose the MS-DOS option when formatting the drive; this will create a FAT32 drive, which can be read and written in both Mac OS X and Windows.

  • Burning .iso with Disk Utility (Mac)?

Anyone doing this? I read it can be done but I just tried and it didn't work.
It's been a long 72 hours or so trying different ways to get my 82-minute 3D feature to various bluray permutaions (i.e. side by side, red-cyan, and of course, 2D) (saving the MVC multiplexing for another day).
Anyway, I was hoping I could just make an .iso image in Encore and then burn multiple copies with Disk Utility. Some sources say it can be done, but it didn't work on my 10.8 iMac. Thanks, all!

I don't recall for sure about "disk utility" and DVD and/or Bluray. It seems to me that Toast is usually used.

  • Using Automator with Disk Utility

I'm new to using Automator. I want to create a work flow with Disk Utility but is doesnt appear in the applications list. How do I make Disk Utility work with Automator?

If a program doesn't appear in the list, that means that Apple hasn't written actions for it yet.
You can still use Automator with Disk Utillity, but you will need to use Applescript and the 'Run Applesript' action to operate Disk Utillity.
Unfortuately the 'how' is beyond my knowledge, and the scope of this post.
