How to easily merge 2 iphoto libraries (with duplicates)

Hello,
I would like advice on an easy way to merge my iphoto library with my husbands. I am concerned for the following reasons. We have many pictures and events that are on both computers, but also have many pictures that just reside on one computer.
I'm concerned as each computer has varying amount of faces/locations identified on it, and they are different between both computers (some pictures have had faces identified on both computers, and then some on one and not the other). Also, for common pictures on both computers, the event name is often different between both computers.
What is the best way to merge both our libraries together, while preserving faces and locations specified, event names, and avoiding duplicates?
Thank you so much for your help!

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. The only way to do what you want is with the paid version of iPhoto Library Manager.
Connect the two computers so when iPLM is launched on one it can see both libraries. Then select one of the libraries and go to the File menu and select Merge Libraries. You can set the iPLM preferences to not copy duplicates and maintain Events, etc. Keywords, faces, places and titles will automatically be kept.
You select the location and name of the new, merged library.
Slideshows, books and other keepsakes will not be copied. If you need them to be included then select the library with the least important books, slideshows, etc. and copy it into the the other library. That will keep the keepsakes of one library intact.

I just ran migration assistant, and now I have two accounts on my new iMac...how do I merge my iPhoto libraries? Is there anyway to do it without using an external hard drive?

    Yes there is.
1: Log out and into the account you later want to remove.
2: Open your Pictures folder and look for the iPhoto Library.
3: Right or control click on it, a menu appears and choose the option "Show Package Contents", it's really a folder.
4: Find the folder called "Originals", select it and use the Finder menu to Duplicate it.
5: Move the Copy of Originals to the Desktop. Close the window.
6: From the Finder menu, select Go Computer.
7: A window appears with your boot drive, double click it and on the Users folder inside.
8: Select the OTHER users folder and open the folder called Public, inside is a folder called "DropBox"
9: Drag the Copy of Originals to that DropBox folder, it will copy it.
    10. Log out and into the other account and access the DropBox folder, your files can then be imported into that iPhoto user Library from within the program itself.

  • HOW CAN I MERGE TWO  IPHOTO LIBRARIES

IS IT POSSIBLE TO MERGE TWO IPHOTO LIBRARIES?

If you have Aperture 3.3 or later and iPhoto 9.3 or later you can merge libraries with Aperture.
Otherwise the only way to merge Libraries is with the paid ($20) version of iPhoto Library Manager
It's possible to turn off caps lock too.

  • HT201340 How do I merge multiple iphoto libraries

I have multiple iphoto libraries on an external HD. Not much memory left on my mac HD. So I'm trying to clear up some memory. I would like to merge/organize the iPhoto libraries on the external HD. But I can't figure out how to separate the photos.  I just want to organize them into seperate years, i.e., photos 2009, 2010, 2011, etc.
And since I now have aperture, how can I get these photos organized into simple annual libraries onto the external HD?
Sorry if this has been posted a million times, but I can't figure it out and don't want to lose any photos.

Reorganizing your photolibraries can be error-prone, so before you start, I'd recommend to check your backups of the libraries, if they are current and working.

iPhoto does not support to export partial libraries or to import and merge photo libraries, but Aperture does.
Your question does link to the document "Aperture 3.3: How to use Aperture to merge iPhoto libraries" that describes how you can merge libraries.
Do you have compatible Aperture and iPhoto versions? Aperture 3.4.5 and iPhoto 9.4.3?  If yes, then you can unify your photo libraries by creating a new Aperture library on your external drive and using the command "File > Import > Library" to import your iPhoto libraies one by one into the the Aperture library.
Aperture works well with large libraries. You could keep all images in that one library and be done.
But if you really want separate, small libraries for each year, define smart albums in Aperture:
         New > Smart album
and in the "Smart Settings" HUD for the album press "Add Rule" and add a "Date" rule. Set this rule to "Capture Year is ....".
This way you will have all images grouped by date in the library Inspector.
You could then proceed to export partial Aperture libraries for each year: Select the smart album and use the command "File > Export > Album as library". This will create a new Aperture library, just for that year. You can open this library in iPhoto, if you want.
I myself prefer to have all my photos in just one library; that makes it much easier to search all my photos at once and to combine them freely.

  • How do i merge multiple iPhoto libraries?

I am organizing my grandfathers MacBook.  Let's just say he's not very smart with technology. He has many iPhoto libraries and copies of those libraries, so I need to condense it all into one. I really need help, I hope I can get some help. Thank you and have a great day.

Only two ways currently - the latest versions of iPhoto and of Aperature (which can nopen current iPhoto libraries and can merge libraries) or the paid version of iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -

  • How can I merge two iPhoto libraries stored on an external drive?

Today I was in a One-to-One at the Apple Store.  I want to merge two i-Photo libraries into one.  One library is on my Air, the other is on my iMac.  Both libraries have been moved to an external drive.  When I try to move one onto the other, they won't go.  Yet I am certain that while at the store today, the person there started to merge them.  He did not need the library manager software in order to do so.  We stopped the merge in order to move on to another issue.  Now that I am home, I can't get the libraries to merge.  What am I failing to do?  Thanks!

The only way to merge two libraryies is to use  iPhoto Library Manager which will merge two libraries and keep keywords, titles, faces, places, and other metadata intact.
If one imports one library into another library every image file in the first library, originals, thumbnails, face files, etc,  get imported as an original photo. You will end up with a total mess.  DO NOT IMPORT ONE LIBRARY INTO ANOTHER LIBRARY!
If you have backup copies of your libraries get them back and use iPhoto Library Manager to merge them.

  • How can I merge multiple iPhoto libraries?

    Thus far, I tired
    1) Exporting "Events" from one iPhoto library to the desktop, and then imported them into my desired library.  The problem was when using the iPhoto export feature, the videos don’t get exported.
    2) When dragging "Events" into a new folder on my desktop, and then importing into desired library, the time adjustments I made to my files to not make the transfer (the files do - but not the time stamp).  You see, I have many files where time adjustments were needed.  I used the very useful "adjust time and date" feature in iPhoto to make my adjustments. My files are now properly adjusted to their proper time - I don't want to lose that information.
    3) Lastly, I saw many people mention on the discussion board a third party software called "iPhoto Library Manager."  This program works just as good as dragging a library to the desktop (or external drive) and then importing files into desired library - it was not able to properly transfer the adjusted dates (so that doesn't work either).
    I greatly appreciate your suggestions.

IPLM does wk an it does actually merge libraries - not simply import one version
IPLM has excellent support and as TD noted they have a good help capabilituy
Number 3 works. You may need to read the Help on Library Manger.

  • I have created an iTunes account on my current computer for my daughters ipod touch and tried connecting my ipod nano and it won't sync and says that it is associated with another iTunes library so how do I merge the two libraries?

I have created an iTunes account on my current computer for my daughters ipod touch and tried connecting my ipod nano and it won't sync and says that it is associated with another iTunes library so how do I merge the two libraries?

    You do not merge libraries.
iDevices sync to one and only one computer.
If you want a single library, you manually move the content from one library to another... all content will still be associated with the Apple ID it was acquired with.

  • I have successfully merged multiple iphoto libraries using iphoto-manager.  Now I have multiple albums noted with the old iphoto names.  CAN I DELETE THOSE?

Now that I have merged multiple iphoto libraries into one -- can I delete the albums that show up with the old library names?

You can do what ever you want - in iPhoto albums are simply pointers to photos so deleting an album has no effect except the album is gone - only when you delete from events or photos view is the photo deleted from the library and disk (after you empty the iPhoto trash and the system trash)

  • How to merge two iphoto libraries

How do I merge two Iphoto libraries

Actually it can be done on the command line.  This will be quite tedious if the library you are transferring is large.
Log into the computer on which you want the merged library to reside.
Then, go to Applications->Utilities, and launch the Terminal.
At the prompt, cd to the following directory:
    Lydias-MacBook-Pro:~ lydiachet$ cd Pictures/iPhoto\ Library/Auto\ Import
Now launch an ftp session with the computer where your other library resides:
    Lydias-MacBook-Pro:Auto Import lydiachet$ ftp 192.168.1.36
    Connected to 192.168.1.36.
    220 192.168.1.36 FTP server (tnftpd 20080929) ready.
    Name (192.168.1.36:lydiachet): carolchet
331 User carolchet accepted, provide password.
    Password:
    230 User carolchet logged in.
    Remote system type is UNIX.
Using binary mode to transfer files.
On the remote computer, cd to the Masters directory in the iPhoto library:
    ftp> cd Pictures/iPhoto\ Library/Masters
The directory tree from here down is listed by year, month and date, so actual directories will vary: in the example I'm looking in a directory from July 21, 2012:
    ftp> cd 2012/07/21
    250 CWD command successful.
    ftp> ls
229 Entering Extended Passive Mode (|||62595|)
150 Opening ASCII mode data connection for '/bin/ls'.
    total 0
    drwxr-xr-x  12 carolchet  staff  408 Jul 21 11:29 20120721-112923
    226 Transfer complete.
Now cd to the only directory found here:
    ftp> cd 20120721-112923
View the photo files using the ls command:
    ftp> ls
229 Entering Extended Passive Mode (|||62596|)
150 Opening ASCII mode data connection for '/bin/ls'.
    total 5

    ftp>
from this point you can copy the files to the local computer using mget
    ftp> mget *.JPG
If you have lots of pictures this will be tedious as you then need to navigate through the diretory trees until you have copied all the photos.
Good news is, next time you launch iPhoto on the local computer, it will automatically import all of the new files.

    Hi !
I am trying to share my itunes and iphoto libraries with other users on my powerbook, but I seem to have problems with it.
What is the best way to do it?
Place an alias in my "shared" folder and access this with the applications from the different accounts ? This seems to workt for the itunes library, at least... Or do I have to mess with the righs managent ?
I dont want screw up my nice mac...

Hi... and thanx for your help...
I did not think that I would have to mess with my firewall, as long as I am talking of useres on the same computer, but I guess I was wrong.
Your advice helps very much, but only as long as I am still logged in with my user name. I does not work when only my kids are logged in. There has to be a way to use these libraries without the need to log in the user that has created those folders...
    Hmmm
    Thanx for your help

  • How can I import multiple iphoto libraries into Photos beta

I have successfully imported a single iPhoto Library into the Photos Beta app.  However I have several other iPhoto libraries that I would like to import into the Photos library.  Think of is as merging everything into one now that there's iCloud backup.
I started with iPhoto back in 2005 and have created a separate library every three years ever since.  Each one is quite large, ~40 gigs.
What is the best means to import additional libraries into my new Photos library.  Unfortunately the File import option on Photos does not allow for a selection of iPhoto Library file type.
    Thanks,
    Brian

Merge all iPhoto Libraries into one before migrating them to the new Photos.app.
You cannot add additional libraries to a Photos library, only additional photos.  Or have several Photos libraries, but only one of them can sync with iCloud.
To merge your iPhoto Libraries into one, use either Aperture, if you have it  (see:  Aperture 3.3: How to use Aperture to merge iPhoto libraries), or the paid version of iPhoto Library Manager:  Download it here:  iPhoto Library Manager

how do you combine multiple iphoto libraries and clean up duplicates

If not the only answer is the paid version of iPhoto Library Manager -http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ - and maybe duplicate annihaliator -http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/18748/duplicate-annihilator
You must have IPLM as stated - you may also need DA depending on how thing go with the merge
