How to edit iTunes database outside of iTunes
Hello everyone,
After a successfull (more or less) migration of my user account in Windows, I've found myself with a small problem concerning iTunes. The "My Music" folder of the user account was tranferred including the iTunes database & its Library folder. Outside of this folder I had another folder (located in D:\multimedia\lossless) which was also added to the iTunes database & now this folder is in E:\multimedia\lossless).
A lot of songs contained in that external folder are used in playlists & I have stats & ratings on them that I don't want to lose. With that being said, how could I modify the iTunes database (after a careful backup of course) so that every occurence of the path d:\multimedia\lossless could be changed into the new location e:\multimedia\lossless ?
I really need help on this so thanks in advance so anyone who could help.
You can't edit the iTunes database directly. Which version of Windows are we talking about here? Can you move them back to D:\multimedia\lossless\, at least temporarily? iTunes reports the location of "missing" files as "unavailible" which makes it hard to write a script which does a search & replace on the missing files. I do however have a script which will move things that can be found to a new location and updates iTunes as it goes, thereby preserving all metadata.
An alternative possiblity would be to create a "junction" so that D:\multimedia\lossless actually points to the folder on E:\ then create a script that updates the locations without needing to physically move the files. Once the update is complete the junction could be deleted. Or you could just create the junction and leave things as they are...

I don't want iTunes to keep the physical location of my files because they can be on a SD card, or an USB drive and i don't want iTunes to stop me from playing a song because it cannot find it anymore.
So i would like to use physical files just to upload to iTunes Match and then delete the link to the physical file.
If needed, iTunes Match will download the file.
The problem is just that i would like to delete all references to physical files to make iTunes Match download the file only when needed and stop using the first version i had given to it
maybe i could have a Apple Script to check if there is a physical file referenced and if so delete it to have only the Cloud version -
Can I manipulate my itunes library outside of itunes?
Hello- is it possible for me to manipulate my the music files in my itunes library from outside of itunes?
Can I go into the actual files and move things around (or in and out) and have itunes still recognise everything?
So far this doesn't seem to work, and I'm wondering if there is a technique I don't know about-What exactly are you trying to do?
In theory you should be able to manipulate the files themselves as long as you don't rename or move them.
In general when I am going to change something in a media file, I change and save it as a new copy, then ADD the new copy to iTunes and after verifying all is well, only then do I delete the original. For example, if I want to trim down a long MP3 file to be shorter, I trim it and save the trimmed version as a different file, add that to iTunes then delete the original (if I don't need it anymore).

Does anyone know how to edit artist/song names in iTunes 12 for Windows?
Usually I could click on "Get Info" and change it from there, but now it won't let me do anything with the Get Info page. Help!
I had this same problem and I started messing with it a bit then I remembered it was a read-only file that's why it couldn't be changed. So to take this off go to the song right click it. then left click show in windows explorer. After that it will take you to where the song is located at. Right click that then left click on properties. Once that opens uncheck the box Read-Only. Then left click apply then left click ok. Close itunes. Open it again and go to the song you wanted to edit. higlight it then left click file,which is in the menu bar.(to show toolbar press ctrl+B). Go down to get info and hover mouse over it. then press shift right click it and at the same time left click it. The old get info pop-up should show and you should be able to edit from there.

Anyone figure out how to edit the genre list in itunes yet?
I've searched the topic list to answer my question and have found some threads on this subject but all were from some time back.
I was just wondering if there is anything new on this. I understand there are factory preset genres. I understand how to add and remove my own. But I want to nuke apple's factory preset genres so my list is more concise and pertinent to my own tastes.
Another reason I want to edit it could just be because they say I cant!I am not sure if this is what you want, if you click on the genre field of an individual track, you can edit it. If you make it a new genre, it will appear in the genre list.

If you have a specific address you what to keep out of the Junk filter, then add that address to Contacts, and check the exempt if: Sender of message is in my Contacts box in Preferences. That will cause Mail to skip the Junk filter for any message from that sender.
If you have a specific address or domain whose messages you don't want to see, you can make a Rule (Preferences > Rules). Have the rule move the message to the Junk folder or to the trash.
The way the Junk filter works is by training it to recognize spam. If a message arrives in your Inbox that you consider spam, click the Junk button or Message > Mark > As Junk Mail. That will adjust some parameters in the filter so that it is more likely to recognize similar messages in the future. Similarly, if a message is erroneously flagged as Junk, mark it as non-junk so it is less likely to flag similar messages in the future.
The filter is based on a linguistic analysis of the text of the message. Here is an old (but still valid) semi-technical article about the Junk filter. -
How to edit ipod touch 4th gen playlists in iTunes 11??
Okay, maybe this is just me and I can't figure it out. But ever since the update (which I hate, btw) I have had a really hard time editing my ipod touch playlists. I don't have ALL of my music from my iPod in my iTunes library, so I like to be able to edit my playlists on my iPod without having to sync anything. But now, I can NOT for the LIFE OF ME figure out how to edit my iPod playlists in iTunes itself. Here are the specific things I want to do that I can't figure out:
1. If I have a newly downloaded song in my iTunes library, it won't let me drag it to a specific playlist in my ipod. It makes me just drag the song onto my ipod and I have to then go into my ACTUAL ipod and add that song to whatever playlist I want. But I have to do it ON my ipod. I can't do it from Itunes.
2. If I want to delete a song from a playlist on my ipod/ move any songs around in my playlists, I can't do it from itunes like I used to. I have to do it manually on the ipod.
Theres a few other things that I don't like but can live with. But this is ridiculous. Apple is really ******* me off. Can ANYONE out there help me with any of these problems? Is it something I'm just going to have to deal with? Or is there a way around it? Or do I have to uncheck something that will let me edit??? AHHH HELPPPPP MEEEE........juliaakatrinaa wrote:

ITunes Database Editing, How Can It Be Done?

I have a problem with some *iTunes song links (!)* after marking some changes in the song database using Flash Renamer.
What I did was *change all caps titles* on song files names & folders to propercase, *plus corrected spacing between words*.
I was just orginizing my song library to look uniform to find songs more easily.
It would have been a lot of editing through iTunes one at a time including the folders.
After the edit was done the *song titles are still uppercase in iTunes*, *when I check the songs in explorer their propercase?*
Question:
Is there a way to rescan the database to relink file/folders and edits?
Is there a program to help me fix the song links and edits in iTunes?
How can I fix this problem?

1. Is Tag & Rename a good choice?
I don't know, personally I prefer to use free sofware whenever possible. I generally use iTunes for minor tweaks since that's what I use to populate my iPod. E.g. correct a spelling error, open the containing folder, update the filename, Get info, then find the "missing" file. In the past I've used Magic File Renamer and The Rename to do batch level renames, e.g. rename all tracks to *## <Title>* format. My current preference is for Media Monkey as this works as a player, tagger, including web search, tag from file & path info. etc. and a renamer/reorganiser. It can often find artwork that iTunes cannot or fetch tracknames when all you've entered so far is the album & artist.
2. Not all CD album song files are in the album folders in iTunes, How can this be fixed?
iTunes has a consolidate function which will make new copies (using it's naming rules given below) of any files that are not inside the iTunes Music folder and change the library entry to point to the new copy. Original files are left in place and so could potentially be added again as duplicates. The alternative is to manually place all your files inside the iTunes Music folder, delete the original entries and then reimport the files. Unlike Windows Media Player which can watch your media files and take account of changes, iTunes won't know if you move or rename a file. You have to either take care of things manually or use a third party tool (see below).
3. I would like to consolidate all my subfolders into one folder, Is this possible?
The consolidate function will import all your iTunes Media into the iTunes Music folder. If you let iTunes *Keep the iTunes Music folder organised* it will also organise all the music along the lines of <Album Artist>\<Album>\
\[<Disc No.>-\]<Track No.> <Track Name>. Artist is used if Album Artist is not present. Compilations are stored in Compilations\<Album>\... Disc Nos. are suppressed if the tracks are marked as Disc 1 of 1. or no disc no. is present. File & folder name lengths are clipped at about 35 characters. All invalid characters are transposed to underscores.
If you're asking for one flat level folder with all tracks from all artists & albums mixed into it, then it is certainly possible either manually or with a renamer, but it's not how I would choose to do it. The Artist\Album\Track structure is a good one. Ideally leave it up to iTunes, but if like me you feel you can't then I'd still recommend you use something similar as a starting point.
4. Same question as # 3. but using other folders outside iTunes, A. How will links be affected, B. Is there a fix?

Try iTunes Folder Watch or iTunes Library Updater. Folder Watch is much faster on the adding files front, can be set to run in the background and includes a useful exclusion feature, however it’s really slow at removing orphans. iTLU is better for this although doing it manually after looking at a list of proposed removals generated by Folder Watch is probably faster still. iTLU can also be set to update iTunes when you've used 3rd party tools to change tag info.
While both the tools above can be used to update iTunes when you've moved things around externally, if you are making piecemeal edits, tidying up the metadata for just one album, then it is often just as easy to remove & reimport an album or relink an individual file without using these tools.
Given that you will be using one application or another to accees your music, populate any media player or backup your media it can fairly be argued that while organising the tags is desirable you really shouldn't concern yourself over the actual filenames & folder structure. Many people are quite happy to let iTunes keep everything organised and it works just fine for them. That said I keep manual control, using full-length filenames, putting compilations in <##> <Title> - <Artist> format and keeping certian areas such as Audiobooks, Comedy & Classical in separate parent folders. All my music is organised within the main iTunes Music folder as this allows the library to be easily relocated & backed up.
Before you undertake any reorganisation you might also want to review my post on Grouping Tracks Into Albums which outlines various issues iTunes & the iPod havve with featured artists, albums with the same name, spelling consistency etc.

I am the EFB (Electronic Flight Bag) Manager for a small aviation company that are using 10 iPad with Retina Display as approved in-cockpit EFBs. Our plan is to configure and manage these iPad EFBs with Apple Configurator 1.3. We also use 2 third-party applications for charts, aviation weather, and other aviation functions that depend on a seperate license and subscription with the vendor outside of iTunes. What I am finding through my new education in Configurator is that there does not seem to be a way to maintain the subscription status with those two applications. Is there a way to isolate those two programs from Configurator control? Better yet, is there a way to integrate them with Configurator without losing the subscription status and loss of huge amounts of data that are on a regular, FAA regulatory update schedule? Configurator is awesome at managing iTunes managed applications and is perfect for our company. I need to figure out how to make Configurator work with a subscription-based application. Please help!

How to restore Ipod database without iTunes?

My iPod mini is visible to any aplication except iTunes. I have tried all it sugested on the manuals to fix it and nothing worked.
Others applications like RealPlayer and Anapod can see that the iPod is connect but can´t show its content. RealPlayer says that the database file doesn´t exist or is corrupted.
The only way I can see my files is accessing the iPod-Control directory using windows.
If I disconect it from the Pc I can´t see the musics that are on it.
I have made a copy of the songs that were on it and now I want to know how to restore it without use iTunes, because nothing makes iTunes see it.
Is there any update link that still work on apple website, so I don´t need to use iTunes?
I need to restore my iPod without iTunes because unistall, check register, restarts,... did not work.
The only way I can see the iPod is runing the diadnosis under the help menu. Nothing have worked to make it be showed as device.

How do I fix the itunes database?
itunes gives me an error on every sync to my ATV.
"Some of the items in the itunes library including, (16 podcasts) were not copied to the ATV because they could not be found."
I know the podcasts are gone from both the mac and the ATV, how do I fix the itunes database?
I have tried re downloading the podcasts and letting itunes delete them automatically after being watched, but i still get the error every time i sync. It is very annoying having to clear the error every sync.Re-creating the library described here:

Make sure you sync with AppleTV first if you have purchases on there not synced back to iTunes yet.
It will lose some settings eg connected AppleTV's, and possibly manually added metadata such as album art and text not automatically added on import or added after files imported - at least it did last time I did this. -
I synced my iTunes with my iPhone 5. some of the titles on't match the songs. I checked my iTunes database, it is the latest version, and the titles and songs all match. So how do I fix this on my iPhone?
Sounds like you may need to re-download the entire albums from iTunes. See this KB article for how to download past purchases: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519.
I'd suggest doing it one album at a time. Delete one, download it from your purchase histor, then the next, etc. -

If you activate match on your new laptop, you will have access to all music that you matched or uploaded. You have the option to retain the music by downloading to your computer. If you delete music, it will delete from cloud.

My "itunes library" folder is empty. My libray music (prior to upgrading itunes) is now in an .xml file in my itunes location under my music. How do I extract/convert this .xml file to a Itunes database and restore my Itunes music library??? Thanks, Tom
Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!

Hard disk is failing; trying to save files
Sorry if this is kind of long. Booted up the system off the Mac OS X after getting startup errors. Ran Disk Utility and it could not verify or repair the hard disk. S.M.A.R.T. status reads "failing" in red. My best guess it that the hard drive is on
