How to employ RAID with FCP, Motion etc.

Quick question I'm in the process of initialising an 8.0Tb RAID (and boy is it taking a long time in the background) and when I start my next project I'm wondering if there is an optimum way to organise my new workflow. I once remember reading in Premiere Pro that you should keep your project files off your program file drive, and your capture scratch on a third drive, although that's on one of those awful PC's does anything apply like that on Mac with FCP? Should I use the RAID as a capture scratch, and keep project files and everything else where? Any working practices I need to adopt with a RAID?
And I've tried to find speed test to download to check the speed on write and read on the RAID but can't find the AJA Kona test to download, anybody know of another, hyperlink?

  • How does Mercalli compare with FCP X's Image Stabilizer?

Last night we were shown some videos which had been stabilised using Mercalli.
    http://www.prodad.com/home/products/videostabilizing/300391667,l-us.xhtml
The steadiness was excellent but as we were not shown the original footage there was no way of judging the improvement.
Has anyone used this system and if so how does it compare with FCP X's stabiliser?

    aside Luis' excellent reply:
    * consider to upload your video to YouTube and set it there to 'hidden' or 'privat'. By eMail, share its URL. Many ISP have a max for eMail attachements, and video is huge by nature...
    * poor-man's-Compressor is the free tool Mpeg Streamclip.
It offers in its various Options lots of settings, you usually would do in Compressor. Just share a Master from FCPX, open it in Streamclip and then 'export' it in any compressed form you like, e.g. reducing resolution, frame-rate, bit-rate. Less convenient than Compressor, which would allow to add your very own settings/'destinations' into FCPX... but cost-free.-

  • Two 24" LCD Monitors with FCP / Motion

I have a Mac Pro (early 2009) with the new ATI Radeon 4890 dual DVI video card and one Apple 24" LCD monitor. I'm using this setup for primarily FCP/Motion work. Question:
    - Can the ATI Radeon 4890 handle two 24" LCD monitors, or do I need to purchase a second video card?
    - Can FCP / Motion handle two video cards?
    Thanks!
    lance

Can the ATI Radeon 4890 handle two 24" LCD monitors
ABSOLUTELY. There are two monitor connections on the card. One DVI, the other the Apple connector.
Can FCP / Motion handle two video cards?
Yup. Most FCP workstations I have been on, and personally own, are two monitor setups. That is a fairly typical setup.

  • Suddenly Slow G-Raid with FCP

I bought a 1T G-Raid about 5 months ago, and for a while it worked like a dream with my FCP media. Now it still works, but it often takes a while for it to "kick in" -- I get the little spinning wheel icon and I can hear the drive start up, stop and start up again. As a result, I do a lot of waiting as I edit. Not good.
I have the G-Raid hooked up to my FW800 bus, and two daisy-chained LaCies and a Presonus sound card hooked up to my FW400 bus. I have run both Disk Utility and Disk Warrior on the G-Raid, with no effect. I'm only using about 350 gigs of the 930-gig capacity.
Why would the G-Raid suddenly start to get sluggish, and what can I do to get it back to its lightning fast self?
    Thanks.

Back up that data to another disk as soon as you can. It may be a sign of a failing internal power supply. Does the G-Raid unmount at random?
I'd send it to G-Technologies and have them fix it.
I personally don't recommend G-Raids after having too many turn into expensive paper weights after failed power supplies, even after sending them in for repair.

  • Pro Application Support 4.0.1 - use with FCP 5, etc?

Apple has released "Pro Application Support 4.0.1" (see http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/proapplicationsupport401.html) What's not clear is whether this is only for users of Final Cut Studio 2, or do these updates work with/apply to previous generation applications like FCP 5, Motion 2, Soundtrack 1, etc. I can't find any more detailed read-me.
    Thanks,

  • Help me with FCP motion working well

I have the following computer: Power Mac G5, model identifier PowerMac7,3, processor speed 2.5 ghz, dual, L2 cache 512 kb per cpu, 3 GB DDR memory, I have the ATI Radeon 9800Xt graphics card w/ 256mb vram.
Working with motion has been extremely painful. I bought this computer used and am new to MAC and FCP. I was wondering if I upgraded to more memory would it help the motion process? Using some of the templates is where I am having a really big problem. Also is there another suggestion on the video card or do I have the best the machine can take? I am looking at wanting to invest no more than $200 if I can help it.
    I appreciate your help.

Did you load the OS & software yourself or did it already have? Got the disc? It seems your machine the non quad core 2.5ghz, dual proc G5, correct?
Try a fresh install if you haven't already.
you can also try some RAM, it has to be installed in matching pairs, fyi.
Another thing to check into is Xgrid if you have a network of macs available to you, but I think you need a server machine running OS X Server to make it work.
For AGP cards, you can get a (flashed PC card) ATI X800 XT or a NIVIDIA (flashed PC card) 7800 series card from "applemacanix" on ebay. they are a good seller, had good service from them.
But I would post on the motion forum which one would be best, as I'm not sure.
This machine has seen a lot in it's day already. It may not just be able to push the new motion.
I'd hate to see this as your first experience with a Mac, but I think the newer FC Studio pushes these machines pretty hard.

  • Round Trip problems with FCP, Motion and 16:9

    Hello all-
I've been having some problems with FCP5 and Motion 2. I am working with anamorphic footage (mini dv), and my problem lies in trying to use the "send to" feature in FCP to Motion 2. If I send some footage to Motion 2, edit it, and then go back to FCP to look at my edit, the anamorphic flag has been removed... the video is squished and there are black bars on the right and left sides of the film. I can easily fix this if I find the clip in the FCP browser and check the anamorphic flag, then drag and drop that clip over the original in the sequence, but I was wondering if there was an easier way. Is there a way to make it be anamorphic when it comes back into FCP from Motion 2?
    Thanks!
    Dual 1.8 G5/2GB & 12 PB G4/1.25GB   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Yes, it loses the anamorphic flag on round trip. Just
ctrl/right-click on the Motion project in your
timeline, select Properties/Format and click on the
    anamorphic setting column.
    Patrick
    Patrick-
Thanks for the reply. That's exactly what I've been doing, but I was just wondering if this was an actual bug or not. I guess we will have to wait for Apple to fix it...
BTW- Whenever I check the anamorphic culumn, I always have to re-drag and drop the clip in the timeline again. Is this right? Or should it go ahead and change it in the timeline automatically?
    Thanks again!

  • How to use third party plugin with FCP, I'm lost...

    Hello,
I need informations about how to use plugins with FCP.
I do edit mostly classical concerts. I'd like to do basic audio post prod, without swaping between Soundtrack and FCP.
I need two simple things : add reverb (the built in reverb is really bad), and enhancer. So I looked for specialised third party audio plugins, but I couldn't manage to find something that work for me...
    - Do FCP support VST plugins ? How to install them ?
    - I tried a few audio units plugins. It works, but I couldn't get a friendly visual interface, like VST effects racks. Is it possible in FCP ?
    - does anybody know a good reverb plugin with a friendly interface compatible with FCP ?
    Please help, I'm lost !
    Emmanuel

What you NEED is a better recordist at the concert, someone who understands the peculiarities of your specific video deliver plans.
Soundtrack Pro is right up there with Motion in its impossible-to-understand interface paradigm shift away from industry standard tools. However, if you are in the position of being a sound editor, you must find a tool that works for you. STP might not be the one, certainly isn't for me. You could always try Logic. Yeah, good luck with THAT.

  • Firestore FSC with FCP..?

Hello I was thinking of purchasing a firestore FSC (tapeless recording) but two things consern me...How does it work with FCP..?(Good or Bad) And also (a little off topic) how is the battery life on it? I see that it comes with a 90 min battery or 180min...Anyone used one and can answer this question for me...
    thanks

The firestore works like a P2 card mixed with an external hard drive.
i.e. You capture to the firestore, mount it as an external drive, move you files to whatever drive you are working from and import like they are p2 files (really they are) into FCP. All in all, it works awesome with final cut.
The battery life is good. It doesn't last quite as long as they tell you it does but that's the same with any portable device.

  • Motion 5 and compressor 4 with FCP ?

    Hi,
Is it possible to use motion 5 and copressor 4 with FCP 7 ?
    Thanks
    Ivan

Sort of – by exporting and reimporting as clips. There is no round-tripping. For example, you can't send a clip as a Motion project to Motion4, save and have the clip update in FCP. You'd have to export a clip (or sequence) as a self-contained movie and bring it into Motion (or Compressor), make your changes, exporty and reimport as a clip, see how you liked the result, etc. Much easiier to stay within FCS.

  • Will Motion 5 work with FCP 7?

Since I am not interested in downgrading to iMovie Pro, will the new Motion work ( templates, etc. showing up) with FCP 7?

  • How to zoom and pan with FCP

    Hi,
I am trying to create some artificial zooming with FCP. I do this by setting key frames in the motion tab, although I want to take things a step further and pan into the new zoomed shot.
When I just move the wireframe to the new position, it gives the desired result at the end of the clip, but of course, then I play from the beginning, the clip is no longer zoomed in and as the clip is off center, there is black around the edges.
How do I key-frame this move?
For more clarity, basically I am zooming into an interview, but when I zoom to the desired level (in this case scale to 140 - I am using 720x1080 HD footage from the EX1 35mbs, so it hopefully keep it's quality even at that scale) - when I am at full zoom, the clients head is cut off by the top of the picture because the zoom is zooming into the center of the picture.

Is this a video shot that you are using?
any time you move the center point, you have to adjust the scale correspondingly.

  • Can anyone please guide me how to create a table like employe table with 10

    Hi,
can anyone please guide me how to create a table like employe table with 10colums.
after that we need to update the colums with personal details......like name1,name2,address,city,zip...etc.
using the RFC we need to update the personal details coulums (either select query or Insert command)
if you have any program logic similar to this requirement please share with me...that would br greatly helpfull to me...
    thanks in advance

    Hi....
We are having one table and now i am going to update that table's fields...
for that in RFC function module we need to enter the fields in importing parameters (which are mandtory in table)
and in source code just write like following....
( try to under stand that it contains some previous used table nad field and stucture and work area and function module names)
    FUNCTION ZL2C_UPDATE_MYCUSTOMER.
    ""Local Interface:
    *"  IMPORTING
    *"     VALUE(USR_ID) TYPE  USRID
    *"     VALUE(LOGO_ID) TYPE  KUNNR
      DATA ls_mycust TYPE zl2cmy_customer.
      DATA: name1 TYPE name1_gp.
      DATA: sharpoint_url TYPE url.
      ls_mycust-usr_id        = usr_id.
      ls_mycust-logo_id       = logo_id.
      SELECT SINGLE name1 FROM kna1 INTO name1 WHERE kunnr = logo_id.
        ls_mycust-name1       = name1.
        SELECT SINGLE sharpoint_url FROM zl2c_CUSDASHBRD INTO sharpoint_url WHERE logo_id = logo_id.
          ls_mycust-sharpoint_url = sharpoint_url.
          INSERT into zl2cmy_customer values ls_mycust.
          COMMIT WORK.

  • I am using Toast 11 to burn dvd's. With FCP10.1.3  I could go into the FCP shared folder grab the encoded .m2v file and drag it into Toast 11 and author dvd and burn.  How can you do this with FCP 10.1.4?

I am using Toast 11 to burn dvd's. With FCP10.1.3  I used to go into the FCP shared folder grab the encoded .m2v file and drag it into Toast 11 and author dvd and burn.  How can you do this with FCP 10.1.4?

BenB it creates a disc image only and it's not in .m2v. I think it saved it as an Apple Pro Res 422 format instead. The disc image file format will not allow
Toast 11 to create menus etc.  Thanks for your help.

  • How do I use m2ts movie file format from my old pc with FCP on my mac?

I have recently moved from a PC to a iMac. I have a large number of Sony AVCHD movie files, which were imported to my PC and are in the m2ts file format on my PC. The original files on my Sony camera were deleted so these files are now all I have. Also, for each movie clip on my PC there are 3 files....a very large m2ts file along..... with two very small file....one is a .modd file and the other a .moff file.
I now want to use these m2ts files (and if needed possibly these other two smaller files) on my Mac make movies with either iMovie or Final Cut Pro. and don't know how to import them or convert them for use on my Mac. Can anyone help?
One final question. Can FCP author DVD's or is separate software required. Apple has discontinued iDVD for iMovie (which I find rediculous) and so I'm worried they don't support making DVD's with FCP.
    Thanks

Although I don't use Toast I know lots of people who do and like it for a variety of purposes; for example, many people author in DVDSP and burn disks using Toast. But there are a lot of versions and they have differing features and capability. Do a search in these (or iDVD) forums you'll find plenty of info. Don't know about the other app. Again, if you ask Apple, they may come through with iDVD…they have for others.
Clipwrap quality limitations? Try the trial and test the results for yourself. As far as I know the trial is fully freatured but there is a one minute clip limitation (which doesn't apply to the paid version).
    Good luck.
