How to enable 802.11N extended network and WPA2 Personal Security?

Hello,
I have an aiport express 802.11N, using Radio Mode 802.11N (5Ghz only) and set to "allow this network to be extended". At the same time the wireless security is set to "WPA2 Personal" (and the key defined). This router is also hooked up to the internet as the main bridge.
On the other side, I have an airport extreme set exactly the same way from a security standpoint (WPA2 Personal) and for this one, the wireless is set to "extend a wireless network".
Both routers have their light green and my computer is wired to the airport extreme. The computer gets its IP address from the main dhcp server and I can FTP to any ftp site; I can ping any machines on my network;
Now the problem:I can not browse the internet nor ping any website. Http traffic is completely blocked.
If I reset the security to none on both routers, I can then access the internet without any problem.
Has anybody been succesful with this configuration and what am I doing wrong?

You need to download and install the AirPort Extreme 802.11n* Enabler for Mac. But it will cost you --- $1.99. Order it from the Apple Store:

I have a 2GB Time Capsule and 3 Airport Express airports. The TC is configured to "Allow this network to be extended" and all 3 Airport Expresses are configured to "Extend a Wireless Network." Even though all three expresses are close enough to connect to the TC only one will do so. The other two expresses connect to the first. Even though all three expresses are configured to "Allow wireless clients", only the express that connects to the TC will do so. The other two expresses will not allow a wireless connection even from a computer only two feet away from them. Am I trying to do something that is not supported by 802.11n?
Thanks for any information - Glenn

    Welcome to the discussions, Glenn!
Think of Apple's "extend a wireless network" feature as if the Time Capsule were the hub of a wheel and the Express devices were located at the end of separate spokes. The remotes connect directly to the hub...they do not connect to each other.
Check your settings again to make sure that you have the base station and remotes configured correctly.
The Wireless Mode on the Time Capsule should be set to "Create a wireless network" and the box below that to "Allow this network to be extended" should be checked. That's it for the Time Capsule.
Configure each Express separately, only powering on the device that you need to configure. It may help to temporarily connect an ethernet cable from your computer to the Express to help with the configuration.
For each Express, you can configure it using the Manual Setup option on AirPort Utility. Click the Wireless tab for the setup page. Wireless Mode would be "Extend a wireless network". If you don't see this choice, hold down the option key on your computer as you click on the selection box. You will select the network that the Time Capsule is creating, enter the password, etc. Make sure that there is a check mark next to "Allow Wireless Clients".
Other than naming each Express, (make sure each Express has its own name), setting up the passwords, etc., that should be it for the Express setup.
In general, a good starting point for the position of the Express is to place it at a point that is approximately 1/2 to 2/3 of the distance between the main router and the area to be covered.
For more info on the setup, refer to the Designing AirPort Networks guide, pages 43-44. Please post back on your progress.

  • WRT300N and wpa2 personal security

I believe this is the best security option for me. My router works perfectly, I have a handful of notebooks and desktops connected. I am set up 'mixed' as I have some 'g' and 'n''s on the network and am 'ppoe'. My ip addresses are dynamic and working well. Everytime I try to activate wpa2 security i choose 'aes' and enter a 13 key password and click save changes. I then cannot get signed on to the router - ip address not acquired is the message. I check my ip address, ipconfig/all and sure enough there is no ip address. If you can help I would greatly appreciate it. I checked as best as possible other posts but could not find this issue. Thanks in advance!!
Also, as of now, is there any prodcut out there that successfully extends this routers range?
    Cheers,

on the computers where the wireless cards are installed there should be software that you can access to enter the:
    security
    WPA Algorithms
    Shared Key
There could be an icon on your desktop or go to the start menu then all programs
    Good Luck,

  • WDS and WPA2 Personal Security

I'm about to set up a WDS with an Airport Extreme, and an Airport Express.
When I set up my WDS with Airport Admin Utility, will my security settings and my 64 character PSK be transfered from the Extreme to the Express? Do I need to apply my security settings first, and then set up the two APs as a WDS?
I've looked for this info in the documentation and have had no luck.
Thanks in advance for any help.

The Extreme is existing, the Express will be here
    next week.
Ensure that the Extreme is configured to use WPA2 and that this works okay.
Use the Setup Assistant to configure the Express to extend an existing wireless network.
The Assistant will then configure both the Extreme and the Express for WDS. It will configure the Extreme as the main base station and the Express as nodes.
Will I need to reset the Extreme as well?
    No
    Or will its
settings be moved onto the Express?
    The assistant copies the settings.
Will AirTunes work reasonably well in WDS mode with
    WPA2?
    Yes.
However do you NEED to extend your network, or are you quite happy to use the Express units for AirTunes only?
For example, say your Extreme is in the basement, you put the Express in the living room, but you need to extend the network into the next floor bedroom then use WDS.
If all you need is AirTunes then don't use WDS.
WDS effectively halves the available bandwidth, which can sometimes mean music dropouts.
Only use WDS if you need to extend your wireless network, otherwise configure the Airport Express units to JOIN your existing wireless network (known as client mode).

Can you clarify what you mean by "plugging in"? Are you saying that you are pluggin in an Ethernet cable to the AirPort Express from the AirPort Extreme?
Or, does "plugging in" mean wireless?

  • 802.11n AirPort Extreme and Express

    Hello,
Thank you in advance for all your help and replies, I truly appreciate it.
I'm looking to purchase an 802.11n Airport Extreme and AirPort Express. I want to setup the Extreme next to my DSL modem and setup the Express in another room and have it extend the wireless network. The Express will also serve as an ethernet port from my DVR unit. I have read different posts that indicated that if I setup the Express to wirelessly connect to the Extreme, via WDS, or some other method, the wireless network will be downgraded to 802.11g. I currently have a 802.11g wireless network. I have one Buffalo Technology 802.11g wireless router and one Buffalo Technology 802.11g router (setup as an access point) and can do everything I need except connect a external HD via USB.
If at all possible, I would like the entire network (Extreme and Express) to use the same SSID and password. Have the Extreme perform the MAC filtering, provide DHCP address, and service a guest network.
So, do I understand what I have read correctly, that connecting an 802.11n Extreme and 802.11n Express via wireless (WDS, or other method) will downgrade the network to 802.11g? Are there any other recommendations on how I should connect these two devices and provide 802.11n service?
    Again, thank you in advance.
    --GMReed

When using the "extend" feature with the new 802.11n base stations, the extended wireless network operates in the 802.11n mode. I believe you may be referring to one of two things that may have led you to that conclusion: 1) When extending a network with the older static version of a WDS, the extended network operates in the 802.11g mode. This is true when either or both base stations are 802.11g models, and 2) Non-"n" wireless clients, connected to a "n" network, will bring the network down to the lowest bandwidth level of the oldest standard. Although connecting these types of clients does affect the overall bandwidth available to "n" clients, it does NOT bring the overall wireless network down to "g" or "b" level.
    >If at all possible, I would like the entire network (Extreme and Express) to use the same SSID and password.
By default, both base stations must uses the same Network Name or SSID and wireless password to work properly.
    >Have the Extreme perform the MAC filtering, provide DHCP address, and service a guest network.
For MAC filtering in an extended network, both base stations must be configured with the same MAC addresses for all clients that you want access to the extended network. The Extreme would provide DHCP service, but (unfortunately) you cannot extend the guest network.

  • I have a pc running windows 7.  I got an Airport Extreme 802.11n Wi-Fi and the printer is now plugged into the Airport.  The wireless router works fine but the printer shows as offline in control panel and in word. The printer is a HP LaserJet CP1525nw.

+For now I have it set to Share Public IP address - Is this correct for my Network Setup with The Airport Extreme being the only router being used ?+
This would be the correct setting if the AirPort Extreme is connected to a simple modem (one ethernet port).
    *Settings I have Enabled*
5 GHz name indicates that you have elected to use the option to assign a separate name to the 5 GHz network. This will allow you to "tell" compatible computers to connect to that network, rather than the slower 2.4 GHz network
Use Wide Channels is recommended for 5 GHz operation.
Interference Robustness often does more harm than good and should not be used unless you know you are in a area with a lot of wireless networks and you feel that your network is experiencing interference issues from a nearby network.

  • What do I do to get my MBP to enable 802.11n?

I have been wondering why my internet connection wasn't as good as my girlfriend's who recently got a new MacBook, so I purchased the 802.11n enabler because in network utility it only had 802.11 a/b/g so I looked at the requirements and it was noted that the "n" came with Intel Core 2 Duo processors, but mine is just a simple 2.16GHz Intel Core Duo. I have upgraded to Leopard and the reason why I mention this is because I have also read that when upgraded to 10.5, Leopard automatically updates to enable 802.11n. Well I sit and wonder if something went wrong while updating? probably not, but I can't even install the AirPort Extreme Update 2007-002! @!#$? I have a mac, it runs 10.5.2 and the requirements for that update are 10.4.8 and higher, and an Intel-based Macintosh. I meet the requirements. Should I have had updated the Airport Extreme before updating to 10.5? Why is this a problem? it should be easy... right?

That's exactly what you need to do - and what I did a year ago. Check iFixit.com for instructions. Check this out

    Okay Guys need your input
I've heard that if you want to enable High Speed WLAN connection such as 802.11n you need to have you security settings as WPA2 and AES
    Is this true?

    Hi
Typically configuration guide - 802.11n configuration section listed this. Below is form 7.4 Config Guide section
"The 802.11n high-throughput rates are available on all 802.11n access points for WLANs using WMM with no Layer 2 encryption or with WPA2/AES encryption enabled."

You need to ask Apple to reset your security questions; ways of contacting them include clicking here and picking a method for your country, phoning AppleCare and asking for the Account Security team, and filling out and submitting this form.
They wouldn't be security questions if they could be bypassed without Apple verifying your identity.

  • How to Set Up AirPort Extreme 802.11n only Network

I purchased a used AirPort Extreme base station and a used AirPort Express off eBay to upgrade my home network. Both are the latest model AE (dual band II, firmware 7.5.1) and AX (802.11n, firmware 7.4.2). I want to use my AE as main router (Internet connection, DHCP) and use my AX to wirelessly extend network to my family room, where I have my Xbox accepting only wired network. And I want AE and AX to communicate through 802.11n to maximize bandwidth. Sounds easy right?
Well, I've got this set up mostly working except the 802.11n part. Not matter what I do, It seems only operating in g mode. I made my AE creating a 5Ghz network but I couldn't find this network anywhere. Not on my iPad, not on my iMac.
I'm wondering if I have a defective AE. The seller on eBay told me he used the 11n network just fine. The router is still under warranty, I'm wondering if I should ask Apple for a repair? But since I'm pretty new to Mac in general, I figure there might be something I just missed and hence this post. Any help is greatly appreciated!
Some screenshots of my configuration: http://picasaweb.google.com/xianxu/IPad

I do have an AX that extends the AE network. There is nowhere on AX that I can specify radio mode, once I specified it to extend a network. I assume AX talks to AE over the n network and then extends the network to be g compatible? Sounds really strange.
Maybe not too strange. Since the AX is a single-band device, it can only extend the AEBSn's 2.4 or 5 GH radio, at a time, not both simultaneously. Since your iPhone was able to connect, most likely, it was extending the 2.4 GHz radio ... which was also configured to support "g" devices. What I haven't figured out is how, if you set the AEBSn's Radio Mode to "n only" why non-"n" are still able to connect when the network is extended.
... I chose to create a different network name for 5Ghz radio as something like: MID-EARTH (5 GHz). However I can't seem to find this network anywhere. I'm wondering why this is the case? Is my AE somewhat defective?
This may be a completely different issue than the extended network one. If you remove the AX from the network equation, wireless clients should see two different Network Names or SSIDs ... one being "MID-EARTH (5 GHz)" and whatever you called the 2.4 GHz network. That is, assuming that the client is capable of accessing both bands. If this is not the case, we would need to revisit your AEBSn's configuration settings.
