How to enable disk use on an iPod in "recovery mode"?

I am trying to enable disk use on my iPod classic 80GB to recover lost files. One day out of the blue, 12 days worth of music vanished from my iPod, and as my laptop that stored all of my music was stolen a few months earlier, I need to manually recover the files by first enabling disk use (at least according to the various tutorials I have read online).  There should be a box you can check or uncheck in the summary of the iPod when it's plugged in, but on my iTunes, all it shows in the summary is "iPod recovery mode" and underneath a "Restore iPod button".  Is the "enable disk use" option not available because it is in recovery mode or am I just missing something?

AFAIK this is the case...

  • Why can't I enable disk use on my Ipod touch?

I wish to use my ipod touch as an external hard-drive. I have watched videos on how to go about it and they show that there is a greyed out check box that must be checked. This check box does not exist for me. Why not? and is it possible to enable disk use?
MY ipod is an ipod touch 4th generation, 8gb, ios 6.1.6
    Itunes version - 11.1.5

You just be looking at instructions for the older iPods. None of the iOS devices such as the iPod touch have ever supported disk use. There are third-party utilities that purport to provide workarounds to allow such use, but I have no experience with any of them so I can't make any recommendations.

  • How to enable disk use without losing music?

I am trying to enable disk use on my iPod, but I already have it set to manually managing music and videos. I want to upload music to my iTunes account because it was downloaded to my iPod from a different computer than I have now, and I don't want to lose it. How do I do this? (My iPod is an iPod touch 4th Generation)

Sorry but iPod Touches never had a disk mode.  There are app like USB Disk that allow loading files on the iPod Touch.

  • How to "Enable Disk Use"

Does anyone know how to "Enable Disk Use" on the iTouch?
    Thanks

    As Jolly said, you can't.
But free apps like Discover give you similar functionality.

  • Turn off enable disk use Itunes and Ipod

I had a computer crash and bought a new system as part of restoring the library from my Ipod Nano gen2 to my new computer, I was told to put my ipod in disk mode. Now that the library has been restored how do I get my ipod AND Itunes out of disk mode, I have tried to reset the Ipod by pressing and holding the cnter button and the menu button on the Ipod but the check box for enable disk use is greyed out in Itunes

I looked at that option but became concerned when it said that It would erase the library on my Ipod. I followed through and now all seems to be back to normal
    Thanks

    Hi Anthonybow12,
I apologize, I'm a bit unclear on the exact nature of the issue you are describing. If you are unable to access your iPod touch because it is in Recovery Mode (icon screen instructing you to connect to iTunes), you may find the following article helpful:

  • WRT600N - how to enable disk use?

I have the WRT600N but no matter what USB disk (a 20GB removable drive and an assortment of flash keys) I plug-in , it's not being recognized by the router on the storage tab of the router admin pages. I don't have a home network but I have 2 machines and a printer connected through the router. (no software firewalls at all) 1) 3Ghz Core2duo w/XP-SP3 wired through one of the gigabit ports 2) Dell Inspiron 1720 w/Vista Home Premium 32bit-SP1 connected wirelessly on the 2.4 GHZ band (g) 3) HP 6980dt printer setup wirelessly on an internal IP (both machines can connect to it). Everything is using WPA2 Do I need to setup a network to get it to work? (i.e. install file & printer sharing or client for microsoft networks) Are there any services that absolutely need to be running? I've tweaked a few of them (disabling tcp/ip netbios helper being one of them) - uPNP is enabled. Thanks in advance.

Honestly, I wouldn't waste my time. The Storage Link on the WRT600N does not work properly. It corrupts files, has file size limitations, and is incompatible with some backup programs. It has also been known to have issues maintaining connectivity. I gave up after a week of trying...obviously, YMMV.

  • ITunes: Enabling Disk Use on iPod 3G with iTunes 8.2

    Hi:
I have an iPod nano 3G, and just upgraded to iTunes 8.2 from 7.7.
The Features Manual says that I should be able to "enable disk use" from the iPod Summary tab in iTunes under the devices section. The Enable Disk Use option is checked, but grayed-out. Was this method of disk access changed ?
How do I go about enabling my iPod for Disk Use?
    Thank you
    DaleB

Are you managing your iPod manually, in other words is "Manually manage music and videos" enabled in the Summary tab? If it is then disk use is already enabled by default which is why it would be checked and greyed out.

  • Enabling Disk Use is Flawed?

When you enable 'Disk Use' on your ipod to use as a disk drive to store files, iTunes warns when turning on this feature 'You must manually disconnect your iPod- even after ipod update is complete'.
So after i transfered files to 'I:\' on my ipod and the update was completed, i clicked the 'Eject' button on iTunes to manually disconnect my iPod.
I connected my iPod to another computer, and tranfered the files from 'I:\' to the 2nd computer. But how should i disconnect/Manually Eject it now? I can't open the copy of iTunes on the 2nd computer otherwise it will sync my ipod to the playlists and music stored in that copy of iTunes. And also my iPod says 'Do Not Disconnect'- surely i should follow this and avoid pulling the USB cable out without manually ejecting (i have done this previously and the data on my ipod was wiped).
Does anyone else use 'Disk Mode' and have ran into this problem?

Open Windows Explorer and find the drive letter that represents the iPod and right click on the drive letter (in the left hand pane of Windows Explorer) and select EJECT from the context menu that appears after you right click.
Another way to accomplish the same task is to look down in the System Tray where the clock is located and locate the tiny icon that says "Safely Remove Hardware" when you hover over it. Double click this icon to opena dialog where the iPod will also be listed as a USB mass storage device. Click on it to highlight it in list and then click STOP. Another small window (dialog) should appear with Apple iPod USB Device listed. Click on that item in the list and click OK.
I find the Windows Explorer method easier.
    Best Regards-
    Randy
P.S. I believe you could actually open iTunes on the second computer becuase iTunes will see that it is associated with another install of iTunes and warn you before overwriting or taking over the contents of the iPod. I believe if you say not to take control you can then use iTunes to disconnect the iPod. This however is from memory so the other methods are better options =)

  • Enable disk use on Classic?

My computer went to computer heaven with all its data and applications. I have set up a new computer and would like to sync the 9,000 items on my iPod Classic to iTunes. Unfortunately, it insists that it wants to wipe my iPod clean. Nearly all of the content on the iPod consists of my 600+ CD collection, which I fed, one by one, into iTunes.
The third party software I have found that promises to reconstitute my iTunes Library requires me to enable disk use for my iPod, but I can't find a way to do that. Help?

Summarizing if you don't like to read Instructions and manual.
Sandy, if you dont want to put the iPod in Disk Mode, and use ity as a portable hardisk, but just asking about
the function or benefit of "Enable Disk use"
Normally if I want to add just a song or two from my library or playlist to iPod, I would put the iPod in
    Manually Manage,
then ensure that enable disk use is tick
Drag the song/s from the library to the iPod icon or playlist.
So retaining all the songs in the iPod, this is much faster than Sync, and dont give problem like timeout and freezing iTunes.
    Have a nice day!

  • Can't enable disk use ( 5th Gen 30g Video )

Everytime I try to enable disk use on my iPod, I hit 'Apply' and it begins updating. However, my iPod only briefly shows " Updating do not disconnect ", and my iTunes says it is still updating for a few minutes, frozen. Until, ultimately, an error pops up and says " Unknown error (-50) ". I just need to enable disk use. Is there any other way besides iTunes, which is obviously a piece of garbage?

i had that error all the time error -50....not anymore..
here's a bit here's what microsotft says: (paraphrased)
To resolve this problem, delete the UpperFilters registry value and the LowerFilters registry value. These values may cause access problems. To do this, follow these steps: 1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit , and then click OK.
    2. Locate and then click the UpperFilters registry value. This value is located in the following registry subkey:
    HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E980-E325 11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
    3. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.
    4. Locate and then click the LowerFilters registry value. This value is located in the following registry subkey:
    HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\4D36E967-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10 318}
    5. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.
    6. Exit Registry Editor.
    7. Restart the computer.
it worked perfectly for me!make sure to follow the directions. it's easy and resolves many Windows XP problems related to ipods. for more info try microsoft help and support and just serch for ipod. it list a bit more info there. it doesn't say anything about reinstalling the apple software, but just to be thorough i unistalled itunes and quicktime before anything just to start with a clean slate, then reinstalled them from my ipod disk after the restart. then i downloaded all the updates from apple. my ipod has never worked better. good luck. theres no link to the page just search for ipod in windows help and support for exact wording

  • Enable Disk Use...

I have an iPod that is synced for my Mac side of my Macbook Pro. I did a fresh install of Windows and I am going to put my music on the Windows side as well. I use a program called PodUtil that transfers files from the iPod to where ever I want on my Windows HD. I've done this before and it worked perfectly fine, but now that iTunes has updated I can't find the check box to enable disk use for the iPod. It's not in the preferences, or in the summary panel under "Devices->iPod". Any ideas? Or other possible methods to get my music from iPod to PC.
    Thanks!

There is also no button to manage songs/files manually.

  • How can I uncheck "Enable disk use" in iTunes for my iPod? The option is grayed out, and permanently checked.

When I plug in my iPod Nano (6th generation) and launch iTunes, the device appears in the sidebar as normal, but the option to check or uncheck "Enable Disk use" in the Summary pane for the iPod is grayed out. Currently, the box is checked, so "Enable disk use " is turned on -- but what I want to do is UNcheck it and turn it off.
But nothing I've tried so far has successfully ungrayed the "Enable disk use" box. Help!
Question: How can I ungrey the "Enable disk use" option in my iPod's Summary panel in iTunes, allowing me to uncheck it?
Alternately, is there any other way to turn off "Enable disk use," using some esoteric workaround? Thanks!

Set it to sync automatically. Disabling that option isn't possible for an iPod set to sync manually, as it shows up as a disk as part of the sync process, and iTunes has no way of knowing when you're done syncing an iPod set to do so manually.

  • IPod appears on Desktop - enable disk use checked, greyed-out

Each of my daughters has a video iPod--
The "white" one - about 11 months old, now appears on the desktop when connected. iTunes opens, but the choice "enable disk use" is greyed-out, i.e. I cannot un-check this, and each time the iPod icon appears on the desktop.
The "black" iPod-- just a few days old, but essentially the same video iPod-- it does NOT appear on the desktop, and the "enable disk use" writing is NOT greyed-out, i.e. we could "check" this if we wanted.
How to get the "white" iPod to no longer appear on the desktop? I have tried resetting it, but that doesn't seem to change anything.
Also-- is there a reason why this appears on the desktop, and is that a limiting factor for any reason-- or a problem? Really just trying to understand this!
    Thanks for any comments.

If the iPod is set to sync manually, the enable disk use checkbox will always be on, as iTunes doesn't know when you will be done transferring content to the iPod and ready to unplug it. The iPod will appear on a Mac's desktop while iTunes is syncing it or waiting for you to transfer content to it, or when disk use is explicitly enabled and the iPod is plugged in to the computer.
