How to enable Staggered Spinup for DIsk-utility Software raid?

I have a Mac Pro 3, 1 (early 2008) and was wondering if the system supports staggered spin-up. I have four 7200.12 Barracudas in the drive bays and use them for software strip volume via SoftRAID.
If the system does support staggered spin-up, how can I enable it. I was previous user of Bios operated hardware, (PC user is misleading :-p) so I am not familiar on how to enable those options on Macs.

Unless SoftRAID does something, but there ARE disk drives that by themselves will I am pretty sure, whether it also depends on the controller, not sure.
I know some external RAIDs used drives that did (Maxtor had) and sometimes a disk wasn't ready on time. And tweaking the driver or firmware for the controller can help.
On a PC you can add a delay in the BIOS to wait, yes.
The whole idea is so that you aren't requesting 4-5 drives pulling the amps/watts needed at once making it lighter load on PSU.
Is there a problem? have you asked the excellent, quick and helpfull SoftRAID support? or just "curiosity?"

  • Disk Utility Software RAID

    Hi everyone,
I know how to create a Software RAID in Disk Utility. Let's say I do that with 2 identical FireWire drives. What happens or is the best practice when one drive fails? Will shutting down everything and then exchanging the bad drive with a new one issue an automatic rebuild like Hardware RAIDs can? Or will I have to rebuild it manually somehow? What if the RAID is the boot volume, will that make any difference in the procedure?
Does anybody have experience with this and would like to share it?
    Thank you!
    Björn

Hi, I am a bit confused. I just set up a mirrored RAID array with to Firewire 800 drives using two 500GB drives. Under the options button in the RAID setup was a box that you could check to automatically rebuild the array. Will this not do the job if one of the drives fails?
Also, I have set Time Machine to use this as its backup drive. It is much faster to update than using the Time Capsule drive and cuts down on the local network traffic a lot. An added benefit seems to be that the files are written just like files on any other drive and are also accessible using the Finder.
One last question. Do you know of any cons to this arrangement? I know using a RAID array for this is probably not really necessary, but I had the drives so I figured why not try it. Anyway, thanks in advance for your time.

  • Failed Disk Utility Software Raid

My external RAID hasn't been mounting as easily as normal so I opened Disk Utility to repair disk or whatnot and it shows one drive as failed. Not sure what this means or how I should proceed. I'd be surprised if that drive is dead. What does the Rebuild button do? I have backed up all the data on the mirror, but am not sure how to proceed. I'd like to keep this info on the RAID if possible.

    From Disk Utility's Help:
A disk in a RAID set has failed or is missing
Disk Utility monitors the status of the disks in a RAID set. If you see a message that a disk is missing or has failed, there are several things you can try to solve the problem.
If a disk is missing, make sure it is connected to power and turned on, and that it's connected to your computer. If you are using a FireWire or USB disk, you may need to disconnect it then connect it again.
Use the First Aid pane to repair the disks in the RAID, then check the RAID set to see if it still reports an error. You may need to unmount the RAID set to repair the disks.
In some cases, you might need to quit and reopen Disk Utility or restart your computer and then check the RAID set.
If you are using a mirrored RAID set, there might be an error while writing data to the disk. Click Rebuild in the RAID pane of Disk Utility.
If you are using a striped RAID set, delete the damaged RAID set. Your data may be lost. Be sure to back up the disks in your RAID set and other data regularly.
If you have a persistent problem with a disk in a mirrored RAID set, you may need to replace it. After you replace the damaged disk, click Rebuild to rebuild the RAID set.[/i[

  • Hi, how do I manage storage? Disk Utility says "other" is taking up most of my storage but I don't know where to find "other".  Please help!

Hi, how do I manage storage? Disk Utility says “other” is taking up most of my storage but I don’t know where to find “other".  Please help!

For information about the Other category in the Storage display, see this support article. If the Storage display seems to be inaccurate, try rebuilding the Spotlight index.
Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash first:
              iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
Do the same in other applications, such as Aperture, that have an internal Trash feature. Then restart the computer. That will temporarily free up some space.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation—not the mythical 10%, 15%, or any other percentage. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of the data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
When Time Machine backs up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of recently deleted files. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as  Backups. The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself. If you followed bad advice to disable local snapshots by running a shell command, you may have ended up with a lot of data in the Other category. Ask for instructions in that case.
See this support article for some simple ways to free up storage space.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) or GrandPerspective (GP) to explore the volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one. Note that ODS only works with OS X 10.8 or later. If you're running an older OS version, use GP.
Deleting files inside a photo or iTunes library will corrupt the library. Changes to such a library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS or GP can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
If you have more than one user account, make sure you're logged in as an administrator. The administrator account is the one that was created automatically when you first set up the computer.
Install the app you downloaded in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the corresponding line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper 2>&-
    sudo /Applications/GrandPerspective.app/Contents/MacOS/GrandPerspective 2>&-
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator. Ignore any other messages that appear in the Terminal window.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders, sorted by size. It may take a few minutes for the app to finish scanning.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with the app, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • How to enable remote debugging for a session other than the current one

    Hi all,
I am trying to figure out how to enable remote debugging for a session other than the one I am currently using.
More specifically, we have an application that is making database calls to Oracle 11gR2. Something is causing an exception during this invocation. My system is currently not set up to recompile said application, so I can't just add the debug call to the code and recompile. Therefore I would like to be able to log into the database (as sys, if necessary) and invoke dbms_debug_jdwp.connect_tcp on the desired session.
The docs indicate that I should be able to do so:
    dbms_debug_jdwp.connect_tcp(
    host IN VARCHAR2,
    port IN VARCHAR2,
    session_id IN PLS_INTEGER := NULL,
    session_serial IN PLS_INTEGER := NULL,
    debug_role IN VARCHAR2 := NULL,
    debug_role_pwd IN VARCHAR2 := NULL,
    option_flags IN PLS_INTEGER := 0,
    extensions_cmd_set IN PLS_INTEGER := 128);
But when I try (even as sys), I get the following:
exec dbms_debug_jdwp.connect_tcp('1.2.3.4',5678,<session id>,<session serial>);ORA-00022: invalid session ID; access denied
    ORA-06512: at "SYS.DBMS_DEBUG_JDWP", line 68
    ORA-06512: at line 1
00022. 00000 - "invalid session ID; access denied"
*Cause:    Either the session specified does not exist or the caller
does not have the privilege to access it.
*Action:   Specify a valid session ID that you have privilege to access,
that is either you own it or you have the CHANGE_USER privilege.
I've tried granting the 'BECOME USER' privilege for the relevant users, but that didn't help. I read something about having to set some kind of ACL as of 11gR1, but the reference documentation was very confusing.
Would someone be able to point me in the right direction? Is this even possible, or did I misread the documentation?

Interesting deduction, that would be very useful indeed. I hate recompiling just to add the debug call, and it can't be done in our production environment. But it seems unlikely to me it would be implemented this way.
I would cross-post this in the SQL AND PL/SQL forum though, as this is really a database issue, not with the SQL Developer tool. Do add the links to the other posts in each.
    Regards,
    K.

  • Disk utility, software update, garage band,  security, etc. will not open.

I tried to update my itunes about 2 weeks ago. it started downloading, maybe it did all the way, i dont know. because everything stopped working. i can use safari/firefox, office programs and some others but when i try opening disk utility, software update, security (and other programs) they will not open. they come up in the bar at the bottom of the screen for a second then vanish with no warning or error (and no program actually opens).
at first i just deleted itunes completely thinking that was it but now I cant even download that again, as I cant use disk utility to open in.
also, i cant backup my files, i have no way. if i run the reinstall disk will it delete all my files or is there a way to only modify files?

  • Disk Utility : Partition / Raid or Raid / Partition ?

I have two external USB drives that I'm attempting to set up using Disk Utility.
    I'd like to create either
    - one RAID1 set with two partitions, or
    - two RAID1 sets with one partition
however I'm not having much luck with either option. Is either scenario possible?

After some experimentation, I seem to have come up with a kludge ...
    Partition both disks into identical volumes (A1 = B1, A2 = B2)
    Using Disk Utility :
    - create RAID Set 1 ( A1 + B1 = RAID1)
    - create RAID Set 1 ( A2 + B2 = RAID2)
Error message 'Creating RAID set failed'
    Restart ...
    Using Disk Utility :
    - click on partition A2 (now renamed RAID Slice)
    - Erase partition
Upon erasing the partition / RAID slice will remount and the Disk Utility should show two RAID sets. A cursory examination of each RAID set's behavior leads me to believe it is simply a bug in Disk Utility that prevents the creation of two RAID sets on the same disk pair.

  • How to back up when using Disk Utility off the DVD

Hello. i ran into some problems installing snow leopard and can't get back into 10.5. i can only boot into my windows partition. how would i go about creating a back up from Disk Utility being run off of the installation dvd?

If your OS X partition cannot be accessed then you may not be able to back it up. If you have another computer with FireWire then you can try booting the computer into Target Disk Mode. If you can access the drive from the other computer, then you can try recovering your files. Otherwise see the following:
    Basics of File Recovery
    Files in Trash
If you simply put files in the Trash you can restore them by opening the Trash (left-click on the Trash icon) and drag the files from the Trash to your Desktop or other desired location. OS X also provides a short-cut to undo the last item moved to the Trash -press COMMAND-Z.
If you empty the Trash the files are gone. If a program does an immediate delete rather than moving files to the Trash, then the files are gone. Recovery is possible but you must not allow any additional writes to the hard drive - shut it down. When files are deleted only the directory entries, not the files themselves, is modified. The space occupied by the files has been returned to the system as available for storage, but the files are still on the drive. Writing to the drive will then eventually overwrite the space once occupied by the deleted files in which case the files are lost permanently. Also if you save a file over an existing file of the same name, then the old file is overwritten and cannot be recovered.
    General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten with recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro. Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.

  • IMac OSX 21.5 late 2010, had MTN Lion on it. Prob with thousands of my photos in IPhoto all mixed up and intermingled with thousands of odd images I had not seen before. After trying to erase them, too numerous, I used original disk for disk utility. Disk

Utility had issues with erasing disk. It took 36 hours and then said it was a failure. I tried repairing and verifying and partitioning. Finally, I used the original disk to install the system. It installed Snow Leopard. I was unable to install the 2nd disk ILife items, so I repurchased those. I thought I was all set but it would not upgrade past 10.6 or something. After it is all set up, I realize there is nothing on the computer. The updates were in download folders and in reading the install logs, it said the install disc was read only and the system was installed from somewhere else and then it was reaped and something about a sandbox and it seemed important that all the Asian languages were added in, even though I unchecked that option. All these odd programs and windows are on there, which I do not use and do not want on there and do not see it on there. So, I tried this several more times, it appears someone is using the Root user. I tried to disable the root user as I do not understand how to set it. Last night, I took the main partition that I put everything on and made me the owner and took over that whole disk. Then the other two were locked, do I ejected them. Then I wanted to erase 4 things - an iDisk an some other trash and the trash is suddenly emptying 989 items, I think were the logs. So, I turned it off. What is going on? I was unable to fix the install disk. The permissions were not repairable on the partition, it was verified as being ok though. Has someone taken over my computer? How can I get rid of them and get it fixed? It has affected my iPad and my iPhone 5. I really need these devices. I am an artist and need to take and post photos of my work. Is this Chinese people doing this and are they nearby?  I did notice they wanted me to sign up for mo ole me. in the logs  it even said, no [email protected]. And no password access at that address.  So, I was also not able to update to Mountain Lion and Icloud again. at one point it looked like I had. i downloaded everything I purchased that was in Icloud to Itunes and it showed the lion in Mail but there was no cloud icon and Mountain Lion said to install, meaning it was not installed. System information confirmed this. oh, and my main disk in disk Utility is named with an unchangeable name that is the serial number of the mac and it says it is an in/out sata media drive. Please, please help me.

    1. If you break your post into paragraphs it is much easier to read.
    2. I have no idea what your post is referring to, and how - if at all - it relates to iPhoto.
    3. It's a good idea to re-read what you've posted, and ask yourself how it might look to someone who doesn't know you and doesn't know what's going on with your machine.

  • How to  Restore OS X in Disk Utility?

    MacBook Air
    OS X 10.9.1
Reinstall because of corrupted files on Macintosh HD
    Not clear with next steps?
    1.  Do I install the top line disk image: disk1 or the indented startup disk: OS X Base System?
    2.  Once order is determined, I would select restore?
    3.  How do I determine the destination?
    4.  Then what?
I tried to follow a great discussion around this but lost my confidence.  Thanks for the assist.
    James

    James,
Why do you think you have corrupted files and need to reinstall Mac OS X?
Where did you get those steps to do a reinstallation?
You do not reinstall Mac OS X 10.9.1 that way.  Do do so you need to have the computer connected to the internet, restart while holding the Command and R keys.  Then from the options displayed, choose Install Mac OS or it may say Reinstall Mac OS.  That will then install the Mac OS X operating system.
If your goal is to erase the hard drive, you must first choose Disk Utility, and then Format or Erase Macintosh HD.
    Then choose Install Mac OS.
You will have nothing on the hard drive after that except the operating system.  You will have removed all applications and data.
    So, is that your goal?

  • Itunes-enabling your ipod for disk use

When I put my ipod on my computer and itunes loads, it recognizes my ipod, when I click on that drive in the source window, I see my options, and it says that it has enabled disk use...but when I go to my computer, I see no music files, and I am trying to get my music files onto an external hard drive. I have tried other software programs to help w/this, but the programs can not find any music files on the ipod drive.
I can not manually uncheck the option in itunes as it does not work as a functional option, I can check & uncheck other options in itunes for my ipod just not("enable disk use").
Has apple put a restriction on this? I went to their site where they gave a video tutorial on how to enable that feature in itunes, but it does not work on my version, and my version is up to date as I check.
Anyway let me know if you experienced same...as I have tried several online applications that should have worked to get my music onto an external harddrive besides my ipod.
    Thanks....valleydoll

I have my songs on my ipod & my nano, they are formatted for a windows pc, but I purchased a macbook and I don't want to have to go thru 2500+ songs (on all my cds) re-importing. I downloaded a program, but just now discovered that I needed to show my hidden files, so I now have found the music files, but now this program doesn't import m4a files, which itunes uses. so now I need to find another software that will import m4a files.
