How to enter Windows 8.1 safe mode in syslinux?

My old notebook is running very slowly as Windows 8.1 always reads/writes IDE hard disk, so I disable many windows services. And after relogin, I cannot open almost every program even the Task Manager.
It has to enter the 'safe mode' to repair Windows. In syslinux bootloader, I select 'Windows 8.1' then press Enter  and as quickly as I can to press F8. There's no effect that Windows loads into normal mode.
I know that in Linux world everything is a file, so I think I can locate last changed files in Windows when disabled windows services and try to repair it. After a long time searching, in Archlinux I rename '/Win8.1/Windows/System32/config' folder to config.bak ('/Win8.1' is where I mount C:/ partition) and then restart to Windows.
It works! Windows loads into safe mode.
But let Windows to repair itself is a heavy work. I wonder if I can repair just one or a few files in Archlinux to do the easy job. So relogin to Archlinux and recheck the config.bak folder. Yeah! I find a 'RegBack' folder in which the files' modified time is early than that outside with the same file name. So my easy job is to:
$ cd /Win8.1/Windows/System32
$ cp config.bak/RegBack/* config.bak
$ mv config.bak config
Restart to Window, everything is back to good old day!
My lesson is YES EVERYTHING IS A FILE.
My question is beside the rename way, is there any way to enter Windows 8.1 safe mode in syslinux bootloader?

Try to manually interrupt the process while windows loading, it will eventually ask you to.
If don't, try clicking the restart button with shift pressed, if that too would not work; better ask in a microsoft forum.

  • How to start Windows 7 in safe mode with bootcamp?

So my computer had a crash this afternoon in Win7 (it happened before, but still...) and tried to reboot my MBP.
I pressed Alt, selected my Win7 partition, and that was it... No Safe mode selection screen, no Windows Logo
showing it's booting properly, just a black screen...
Anyone had something similar? And most importantly, how can this be fixed?

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rMDjZQqz-i8
    Steps:
1-Open command prompt with admin mode
Or Boot from DVD in command prompt mode.(This is what i experienced, able to show the safe mode menu)
2- Write this command "bcdedit /set {default} bootmenupolicy legacy" and click enter
3- You can now press F8 while Windows 8 starts in order to access Safe Mode and other Advanced Boot options.

  • How do I start firefox in safe mode on a Mac as the equivalent of holding option key whilst starting doesn't open dialogue on Mac?

I am trying to reset toolbars and am following firefox's help instructions. How do I start firefox in safe mode on a Mac as the equivalent of holding option key whilst starting doesn't open a dialogue box on the Mac?

Thanks Morbus.. I hadn't noticed that but it was already set at Mac. I tried it again and it worked this time... but alas my main problem persists:
My back and forward buttons don't work in Firefox and I've lost all of my bookmarks! I've tried a few of the suggestions but without success at the moment.
Particularly unhelpful are the instructions to back-up your lost bookmarks - which I can't do cos they're lost!!

    Try / Consider
Control Panel > icon view > Administrative Tools> System Configuration >

Restart/ Reboot the computer and log in
    OR
Another path to the same place:
    ·         Start the notebook and let it start up in Safe Mode
    ·         Log in
    ·         Windows key + R(Opens the Run Window)
    ·         Type msconfig
    ·         Opens the System Configuration Menu > Click Boottab
    ·         REMOVE the tick next to Safe Boot > Applyto save

  • Blue Screen of death - now can't load Windows (even in safe mode)

Last night laptop (Satellite L500 19Z; Win 7 64 bit) crashed whilst playing CIV4. Got a blue screen of death; before I had chance to read any of the error messages on it the machine rebooted.
It loaded windows in safe mode fine then, and informed me as it had loaded safe mode OK the problem will be related to some recently installed software and I should uninstall programs I'd installed until it would load normally. As it was late last night I shut down and thought I'd sort it in the morning (in retrospect this may have been a mistake ....).
Today, when the machine tries to boot up it attempts a Startup Repair; unfortunately this fails every time and it says "Startup repair has tried several times but still cannot detemine the cause of the problem"
I looked at the log it produces but it passes all the individual tests.
I also can't access the advanced options for system recovery & support, which appears on the Startup Repair dialog box as it demands I be logged in, which apparently I'm not (presumably as the machine never got to the windows login screen before trying the startup repair). The error message reads "you must be logged in to access system recovery options. If you are having trouble logging in please contact your computer administrator for assistance. please click OK to restart the computer."
I've had a go at booting into the various advanced options (safe mode, safe mode with command prompt etc. but the outcome is the same).
I also tried the Repair your Computer option from the advanced boot options screen, but after the screen where it asks you to choose the language and keyboard, I get the same login error mentioned above.
Is there a way to repair or even run the hard disk based windows recovery (haven't got the recovery DVD with me as I'm away from home for a couple weeks) without logging into windows? I would have expected there to be but have yet to figure out how to do it.
(there are no disks in the disk drive, no other devices attached to the laptop - I've tried it with mains power and with the battery and have not noticed any differences)
    Thanks
    James

Normaly the reinstall data is on a separate part on your HD, not in Windows.
The register is only used for Windows.
If it doesn't work you can always try to reinstall from a DVD later.
It does mean all your data on C:\ will be gone. If you can hook your HD on an other PC you can try to safe your work with a recover prog.

  • Windows Stuck in Safe Mode - mouse won't work - need my data...

New Mac User, well two months of trying to get it to opperate correctly. Unbelievable! I've re-installed XP SP2 too many times to count, finally had it up and thought it was running fine for the last week, then I went over to the Mac OS tried accessing windows through boot camp, it shut down the Mac OS, then when I tried to go back to boot windows directly, I received the damning <windows root> \system32\hal.dll file is missing or corrupt - again.
I've gone through a bunch of posts, tried a number of the instructions, and now have a worse issue, my computer is now stuck in safe mode with Windows, by instructions, here, I'd disabled everything for start up in Configuration Utility and checked start up in safe mode there too, so now I can't get it out of it, and since my mouse and keyboard won't opperate in safe mode, I get to the log in page to select user but the mouse just won't move and pressing "CTRL ALTDLT" no response.
In the Recovery Counsole when I rean CHKDSK /r this is what it came back with...
"The volume appears to contain or or more unrecoverable problems."
    97638572 kilobytes total disk space.
    90877508 kilobytes are available.
406 bytes in each allocation unit.
24409643 total allocation units on disk.
22719377 allocation units available on disk.
So what does that mean? Not sure what the " volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable problems" means when it's not telling me what they could possibly be. Thoughts anyone?
If anyone knows or has some good advice on how to get windows back up and running correctly, and without wiping out my data - as I can't get it backed up, I would be tremendously grateful...
2 months of this is really enough, dying to use my system, and praying that I can...
    Thanks so much,
    Kitti

    Here's what worked: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/330184
I followed the instructions above and once I finished, After re-booting, I selected Microsoft Windows XP Professional and the System Configuration Utility came up.
On the “General” tab, it shows that the Start Up Selection is on “Selective Startup” with everything checked, but what’s marked “Using Modified BOOT.INI
Tried to change it to “Normal Startup – load all device drivers and services” then re-start.
Windows came back up, but so did the System Configuration Utility and still showing that it was starting up with “Selective Startup”
Now just need to figure out how to start it up in “Normal”, if in fact that’s possible. Will keep you posted and if anyone has any further suggestions, that would be much appreciated.
I do hope this will help all the others that have run into the main issue, which I have found is caused by the Parallels Desktop by they way, not Microsoft, and that start having issues by getting the dreaded " hal.dll " file is missing or corrupt on a direct Boot to Windows.
    Very long and sleepless night….

  • Windows 8.1 safe mode with networking issue

    Hello,
I have a customer who generally logs into windows using a PIN. They are running windows 8.1 and their only account on the system is a microsoft account set up with a gmail address.
I needed to reboot into safe mode with networking to perform some malware removal for them, and upon doing so I realized I wouldn't be able to log in without the password to that microsoft account, as you can't log into safe mode with the 4 digit PIN. I
contacted them, and they were unable to provide me the microsoft account password.
No problem, I will just reset their password at live.com and log in with the new password. We jump through all the hoops to get the password reset, and of course now all we have to do is connect the laptop to the network so it can learn that the password
has changed and we can log in.
First, I try plugging the integrated ethernet adapter into my network. The switch port lights up, so CSMA/CD is fine with the physical connection, and it even blinks a bit like it's doing things. Unfortunately the network icon in the lower left corner of
the login screen stays disconnected. Okay, I'll try the wifi.
I click the icon, the wifi is off, I turn the wifi on and my wireless network pops up. I click the wireless network and hit connect, and it "checks network requirements" for a while like normal, says it's taking longer than normal, and then says
"We can't connect to the Internet right now. Please try again." with a close button.
Upon hitting the close button it brings me back to the network list, but curiously it says under my network name that it's now connected, and the connect button has become a disconnect button. The network icon in the lower left of the login screen is still
showing a red circle with a white X in it, and the password still isn't working.
The first couple of times I did this it asked me for my WPA key, which I entered. The last time I tried it didn't ask me for my key. Thinking I should probably tell it to forget the network so I can type it again, I tried right disconnecting from the network,
right clicking on it and going to forget this network, but right clicking does nothing in the network UI on the login screen.
I then grabbed a USB ethernet adapter and plugged it into my switch, which lit up the same as when I used the onboard one, but the laptop is still acting as though it isn't connected. It's also worth noting that no ethernet connections appear at the top
of the network UI on the login screen as they would if we were logged into windows.
I don't have a password reset disk. I can't format this system. I've successfully reset the password online, but networking isn't working. What should I do?

I solved my problems by using the sethc trick to enable the local administrator account. I then rebooted out of safe mode, logged into the administrator account, connected to the internet, and then switched users using fast user switching to the microsoft
account, which I was then able to log in to using the updated password.

  • Bootcamp can only open Windows 7 in Safe Mode

I've been using Bootcamp to play my old computer games on my Macbook Pro for about two years now, and I've never had any issues before now. Last night, I bought a game from Origin and found that it was taking a lot longer to download than I had expected, so after about four hours I decided to go to bed. I changed my settings in Windows to make sure the computer would not sleep when I closed the lid, but later forgot that I had done this an ended up leaving the laptop slightly open all night while I slept. I turned the display and keyboard brightness all the way down. When I went to check on my download this morning, I found that the computer had shut down and brought me back to the Mac login. But ever since then I haven't been able to get back to Windows. Every time I select it in Bootcamp, I briefly see a Windows loading screen and then I am taken to a plain black screen where I can't do anything. I can open Windows with Safe Mode, but that doesn't really seem to be getting me anywhere.
Can anyone tell me what might be wrong? Did I mess something up by leaving the computer open all night? Is there any way the display brightness might still be turned off and that's why I'm seeing a black screen (that seems like a bit of a dumb question, but I haven't been able to adjust the brightness levels during any of my attempts to start Windows, so I'm curious)?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
