How to Erase a DVD+R DL ??

I have the Plextor, and can write to the above discs. But how do I erase them for another movie ??
Thanks, rick

DVD+R discs (as well as DVD-R) are write once, they can not be erased. If you want to erase and reuse a writable DVD you need to use either DVD-RW or DVD+RW and as far as I know these are both limited to single layer. Then there is DVD-RAM but not very many drives support that type of media.

Some shredders will shred cd's and dvd's. Otherwise, physically destroy the dvd-r. As mentioned, you can't erase or rewrite it on the computer.

  • Workflow to erase a DVD?

Is there a way to make a workflow that will erase a DVD without any user interaction? I'm playing with the demo of Personal Backups X5, and it can be set up to run an application or Applescript before it starts a backup. The idea would be to reuse a DVD for each scheduled (unattended) backup, doing the same thing that a Recycle backup does in Retrospect 6.1.

OK, with a little research and modification, I got it to run as an Automator application and a workflow, but Personal Backup fails to run it. I have almost no experience at this, but here's what I came up with. First, I have 2 drives, and second, the "erase" command ejects the disc. So...
    First Run Shell Script
    drutil -drive internal erase quick
    Second Run Shell Script
    drutil -drive internal tray close
When I run the application or workflow by itself, it works fine, but when I try to have Personal Backup run it as preparation for the backup script, it seems like it just ignores it, so I've emailed their support. Their manual says you can use "Preparation" to run an AppleScript, shell script or Automator workflow, or any application. I haven't tried an AppleScript or shell script because I don't know how to do that, or what the correct syntax is. Any help on that?

  • How to erase a MacBook from a pawn shop ?

Here's a synopsis of what I'm dealing with. Ive never owned a MAC before so I thought instead of spending a grand for a new one I would see if i could find one locally. so I purchased an early 2008 Black MacBook with OS X 10.7.4 Lion from a local pawnshop. The person who had it before me was still logged on and it had all kinds of accounts set up and such. So I went online and researched how to erase all of that. I did the restart holding the option key which brought me to the MAC OS X Utilities. I selected Disk Utility then selected Macintosh HD and then the Erase Tab. After that I clicked security options and then selected single pass of Zeros. Clicked ok and the  clicked erase. It took about an hour and then I selected to erase the free space. After that I went to to the MAC OS X utilities options box and selected Reinstall MAC OS X. All said and done its now asking me to input my Apple ID and then it says my ID has not purchased the operating system.
Now what do I do ?
Do I really have to go to the iTunes Store and buy lion ?
If that's the case Mountain lion is only $20 will that work as well?
Once I purchase the software, do I go through the motions again to have it installed like before ?
Should I just buy a hard copy rather than doing it over the Internet ?
Much needed help would be appreciated. I've spent days working in this and now my GF wants to kill me. I need this fixed soon.

Buying a used Mac from any source is best left for experienced Mac users, for the very reasons you described.
At best you purchased an expensive education, at worst, stolen goods.
All said and done its now asking me to input my Apple ID and then it says my ID has not purchased the operating system.
A 2008 Mac would not have had OS X 10.7.4 "Lion" already installed, and it is impossible for you to install it from the Recovery partition since the license to use Lion is not transferable by any means. The seller (more than likely, the thief who stole it) erred in not restoring the Mac to its original condition before selling it to the pawn shop. Without that MacBook's original System Install DVD - which the pawn shop didn't supply, right? - it will not be useful to you.
There are no "hard copies" of Lion available. Lion exists only as a download from Apple, whose servers check your MacBook for a legitimate purchase of it.
Your best alternative is to phone Apple at the number shown on the Apple Online Store website. Explain that you purchased a used Mac and require a replacement System Install DVD. Use those exact words. Have the MacBook's serial number ready for them - it will be required.
Determine the Mac's serial number using the following: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1366
Apple will collect a nominal fee, $25 or so. Once you get the disc, boot from it by starting the Mac by holding the c key with the disc inserted, and pray the original owner did not configure a Firmware Password.
Reinstall its original operating system from that disc, after which you will have reached Step 1 toward using your Mac.
After installing it, you will need to purchase Snow Leopard from the Apple Online Store, unless its original OS was already Snow Leopard (yours was probably OS X 10.5.2 "Leopard"). Snow Leopard costs $20.
Only after installing Snow Leopard can you purchase Lion from the App Store. You will need to call the Apple Online Store again and purchase a download code since Lion no longer appears in the App Store. That will be another $20. You will "redeem" this code in the App Store.
Your MacBook is too old for Mountain Lion.
Total cost: $65 + tax + whatever you already spent.
Tell your GF she was right. Do that now, to prevent further compounding your misery

  • How Do I Use DVD Studio Pro Files In iDVD?

I had somebody create a DVD for me using DVD Studio Pro. (This was a compilation of many different videos.) It turned out great.
I now want to make a DVD of one of those videos on my own using iDVD '08.
I have the raw video/audio files. But, my problem is the raw files that were used for the DVD Studio Pro project are separated into one video file and one audio file. I don't know how I can get them both into iDVD. I was told that I have to recombine these two files into one file. But, how do I do this and still maintain the best quality?
(I am not a video expert by any means, but I can tell you that the video file is a ".mpeg" and the audio file is an ".ac3". When looking at the .mpeg file in the finder it lists its Kind as "MPEG Movie" and when looking at the .ac3 file in the finder it lists its Kind as "Unix Executable File".)
(I'm using iDVD 7.0.1 - I do have Quicktime Pro - I do not have the Quicktime MPEG-2 Playback component - I do not have DVD Studio Pro)
Thanks in advance for your help!

Q: How Do I Use DVD Studio Pro Files In iDVD?
    A: You don't, essentially.
DVDSP is apple's top end app and it is intended to be used with FCP > Compressor > DVDSP. All of these are pro apps.
i-Apps are consumer apps all of which are QT based. With that in mind ....
now that doesn't mean you can't use FCP > iDvd. You can. But you have to do it in a way that iDvd will read all the files (meaning you must think in terms of QuickTime and export in this way). So when you export your QT File / Movie from FCP over to iDvd, it will look something like this hopefully regardless of the raw image & audio files you have already compiled which unfortunately will NOT work with i-Apps BUT will work with apple's pro apps which is the intended workflow / direction of said files in the first place.
Btw ... if your QT movie has chapter markers then please use the following settings so iDvd can read these markers. (if on the other hand you were looking to export this file to DVDSP; then you would choose DVDSP Markers.
Let me know if the above helps. If not, just come on back.

  • How can I share DVD drive on Windows with multiple ODD?

My Windows machine have 2 ODD -- one CD ROM drive, another DVD R/W
(and one more virtual drive, which I think is irrelevant)
Installed "DVD or CD sharing" and remote computer is visible from Air via remote disk.
BUT when I connect and request for use, only first CD-ROM drive is ejected and MBA waits for that drive... and that drive only.
I can't see any configuration option to select which drive I will share.
How can I get DVD sharing work in this case?
    Does anybody have similar problem?
(Or where can I request for this functionality)

    Hello roaminggnome
Unfortunately the support is down at the moment, I will have a better look later. I did go though the Apple support previously, however I found nothing that worked.
The first thread I came across was “Home Sharing” however no mater what I did, it did not appear in the iTunes sharing list (I did go though the “Show Sharing Networks” support as well)
Secondly, I saw “Using A Single Library With Multiple Accounts On The Same PC” (Something like that) but all this did was let us share the same music location, if I was to rip extra music, it will not show in there library

  • How can I convert DVD- video into Apple's format so that it can be played and streamed from my Mac?

How can I convert DVD- video into Apple's format so that I can play the content on my Mac and also stream it to my Apple TV? A few years ago, I transferred all of my home videos onto DVD but now would really like to put these onto my Mac and stream them through Apple TV to watch on the "big screen". MPEG Streamclip.
Apple do not have their "own" format. You need to convert your DVDs to H.264 though.

I would like to know how to burn a dvd in such a way that each image can be skipped over by pressing the skip button? If anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated!

Here's how top get a slideshow that will let the viewer manually control the forward and backward movement of the slides with the forward and back buttons on the DVD remote.
1 - put the images you want to use in an iPhoto album.
2 - launch iDVD, select a theme and add a slideshow using the "+" button at the bottom:
3 - click on the Media button at the lower right hand corner of the window and then click on the Photos button.
4 - locate the iPhoto album containing your photos and drag it into the left hand pane:
5 - select Side Duration to Manual.
In order to get the maximum manual control of the slides you cannot have add any music to the slideshow.  If you do add music the slideshow will continue you advance unless you pause the slideshow and/or use the advance/back buttons and then pause.
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the  File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option.  This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image and launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding was good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • How to erase the existance of a Time capsule

    Hi,
I would like to know how to erase the existance of a Time capsule, like it never existed, because sometimes I can see remains of my old network, and I'd like to know how to reset all this,
    sincerely

    Welcome to the discussions!
You will want to do two things to get the TC back to total factory defaults:
1)Return all configuration settings to factory defaults
2)Erase your disk. (Do this only if you want to erase all of your backups).
Power down the TC for a few minutes
Hold in the reset button and KEEP holding it in as you plug the power back in
Release the reset button after approximately 10 seconds
Your configuration is now reset to factory defaults.
    To erase the disk:
Open AirPort Utility, click Manual Setup
Click the Disk icon at the top of the setup pane
Click the Disks tab just below the icons
Click Erase. Choose your erase options only if you want to erase all backups.
    That's it.

  • Disk utility won't erase a dvd-rw

i want to erase my dvd-rw and when i go to disk utility and click "completely erase" the status bar says "preparing the drive" and then "waiting for drive" and right after that a window pops up saying that i've just inserted a blank dvd, and it asks what option i want. (eject, ignore, ok;action) and the dvd doesn't get erased. any help is greatly appreciated

I am experiencing a similar problem. I have recently erased several CD RWs with Toast & Firestarter. Suddenly yesterday I try to burn a disc, but the only option showing in Disk Utility under Optiarc is The Erase section, stating "Waiting For A Disc To Be Inserted". (No First Aid, Raid, Partition sectors showing). Now, I have just erased about 10 discs but the Erase section is static. It's like it's on a loop, expecting all discs loaded to be erased. Normal CDs are rejected, but DVDs are just fine. Restarting doesn't help. Is this something that you were experiencing and have you found an answer yet.
