How to erase and install new os

Hello All,
I want to do an erase and install on my computer and then upgrade the operating system to Mavericks.
I purchased a new external harddrive where I will backup my files, music, pictures, etc prior to the erase.
I have the original hard disc copy of my operating system when I purchased the computer. I also have all of the software discs to reinstall them.
I have a couple of concerns/questions - We have 4 ipods in the house and an ipad...what will happen when we resync them? Will iTunes think it is assigned to another account and cause me issues?
Also, 3 of us a currently using the computer as 1 user. How do I set up the computer for 3 users? Would we have separate iTunes accounts, iPhoto accounts, etc by having 3 users instead on1?
I need help.

Boot from the 10.6.X upgrade disc you have, erase the HD using Disk Utility. Next download and install the 10.6.8 update combo and install it. Next run and install all suggested updates from Software Update. Finally open the Mac App Store, download and install Mavericks.

Can someone tell me how to erase and install new copy of Mac OS X 10.5.8 ?? IS there a way to do this without CD?? I no longer have the disks and I cant find a way to get this done.. The reason I want to do this is because a 12 year old was using this computer for a long time and there is a lot of junk stuff on the disk, so I want to start from fresh.

Hi Yani,
Your out of luck without an Install Disc, & on dangerous ground also.
2 ways to go...
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
   2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
      *Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
   3. Click the Erase tab.
   4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
   5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
   6. Highlight the drive, select Partition Tab, then Format type... MacOS Extended Journalled, select the Security Options button, choose Zero Out Data, Erase... after completion do a new install.
Or...
Open System Preferences>Accounts, unlock the lock, click on the little plus icon, make a new admin account, log out & into the new account.
In the same pref pane highlight your old account, click the little minus icon, then use Disk Utility to Secure Erase Free Space.

Erase and Install new Jaguar on iMac G3

I've bought a new iMac and have moved the old G3 into another room. I erased the disk on the G3 and am starting fresh. I've dug out my Jaguar Installation CDs and in the process of reinstalling the machine locks up. I've tried the install about 10 times now and it keeps freezing. Not in the same place, but it freezes and doesn't complete the installation. Any thoughts or suggestions. Or has my iMac kicked the bucket?

The first thing I would do is clean the discs off by gently wiping them with a partially damp cloth, then drying it. Sometimes if the discs are slightly dirty, the system will freeze up because it can't read the discs properly.
If that doesn't work, I may suggest buying some canned air (available at Staples, Circut City, Best Buy, etc.) and blowing out the optical drive. Dust can get in their and can cause problems. I do this weekly to my iMac G3 to insure cleanliness. NOTE: Only do this if you have a slot loading model.
If none of this works, I might suspect something wrong with the hard drive or another internal component. I would try these two suggestions listed above first before suspecting another problem, then if needed, going to the next possible solution.
One quick question- when you were using it with the old OS, did you have any problems using the computer? (i.e. slow going, freezing, quitting applications).
Hope this helps Splatto, and as the post before me said, updating the firmware could also be a possible solution.

Erase and install (re)new OS Snow leopard

I want to completely erase and reinstall Snow leopard on my iMac.
I have three or four systems currently on it I think and want a complete tidy up. I have a box set ( currently installed on this mac) which includes snow leopard/ iWork and iLife. Can I just use this snow leopard system disk or do I have to first use the the mac disks (system 10.4.4) which came with this computer?
Advice please.

No need to go through OSX 10.4 Tiger before.

I did an erase and install of os 10.6.8 and it failed

Macbook Pro:
- selling my 2011 MBPro... did an erase & install for 10.6.8... Erased fine, but install failed... started install over, same result. Third try, same result... so, Disc Utility checked install disc and hard drive, they check out OK, there was a message that went with the big yellow caution/alert exclamation point that said (wish I wrote it down) "install failed, then something about script error I think....
- tried again, but did custom install and left out other languages... this time, installed OK, but when starting up, got to keyboard select, highlighted US keyboard and clicked Next and it hangs there... had to use the power button to shut it down, and tried 2 more times, same result, can't get past Keyboard layout selection...
- don't know how to eject the install disc, or how to get past my situation... anyone? Thanks!

1: Hold the power button down to hard shutdown.
2: Hold the option key and trackpad button down and boot the machine.
3: The disk hopefully should pop out, if not when you get to Startup Manager, keep pressing eject on the keyboard.
4: Take some rubbing alcohol (a tiny bit) on a soft clean cloth and polish the bottom of the disk, when dry and blemish free, stick it in and when it appears, click the arrow key to boot from it.
5: Review your secure erase procedures here to make sure your not leaving data

7: If that fails, call Apple and tell them you have a Early 2011 Mac and require MACHINE SPECIFIC Snow Leopard install disks. (10.6.4 -10.6.8) These disks also include the free iLife suite on them.
The 10.6 white retail disks sold online are 10.6.3 and won't work in your machine due to a lack of more recent hardware drivers not present on those disks also they don't contain the free iLife suite.
8: After install, just hard shutdown and it will boot to the "Welcome" video for the next owner.
9: If Apple is going to take too long to send you disks or won't, there is a option to create a image of the bad disk and burn a new one on another Mac (possibly on a PC too) as a ISO image.
Sometimes when the read and burn occurs, errors are repaired and the new image will work when the old one won't.

HT3910 Problems with Erase and Install?

I followed instructions from the article "HT3910: Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard: How to Erase and Install." However, at the end of step 2, where it says I should see a message saying 'Installation Successful', my Macbook Pro tells me that the installation failed. I have erased all the contents off of Macintosh HD and have attempted to go through the install step several times with the same results. What could possibly be wrong?

Preparing for Leopard I had a good clean out and got to 21gb of free space on my 40gb HD.
Backed up files to Firewire AND USB external drives.
I tried an upgrade installation of Leopard.
Got the blue screen, tried the APE fixes.
Couldn't do an archive and install as the message said there wasn't enough space.
9gb plus 9gb = 21gb+ I guess....!
(Even tried a Terminal removal of some iTunes files, which I knew I had a back up of, but no luck increasing available space.)
So, did and erase and install which worked fine.
But now I am having trouble importing settings from the old files.
Mail for example wants me to start from scratch, and won't see the back ups I made.
I realize each application has library files, plists and other files associations - how to I get the virgin Leopard versions to recognize their older cousins?
Migration Assistant doesn't seem to see external drives except for Time Machine which of course has nothing I want...
How also to import 3rd party apps. with their previous associations and settings?
Hope I don't have to start from scratch...

You can't just replace the user folder with the one from before the 10.5 install. What you have to do is individually drag the items from each folder ie "Music" to their corresponding folders in the new home folder.
Put the Backup "Documents" files to New "Document" folder
Mail is located in username/Library/Mail and possibly also username/Library/Mail Downloads, drag both these to the new walts "Library".
Bookmarks is located in username/Library/Safari/Bookmarks.plst, once you find this go to the File Menu in Safari and go to "Import Bookmarks."
I would not recommend copying any settings from the backup to 10.5, this causes errors sometimes. These settings are also easily redone. If you must have them spotlight them or search for them in the preferences or Library/Application Support. Applications Mail settings can also be easily reconfigured for example.

How do I erase and install iMac to factory settings using Install disk?

Once in a while I like to do an erase and install to boost performance and get rid of extra unused files/applications on my computer that are inevitably slowing things down. I have already tried disk repair and that isn't helping.
The problem is now that Lion/Mountain Lion no longer support PowerPC applications, I can't figure out how to use the Install Disk that came with my computer. My computer came with 10.4 (Tiger). I have been unable to erase and restore my computer to it's original factory settings.
I have read a bunch of threads that say to hold down the "C" key, but nothing happens when I do this. The computer just starts up like normal.
The reason I want to do this is because my computer is going slower and slower all the time. I have the "Free Memory" app and I can see my memory decreasing slowly day by day. It goes from about 3GB to less than 1GB in a few days. If I restart, I'm back up to 3GB again.

You had to use Snow Leopard to install Lion or Mountain Lion, so you can downgrade to Snow Leopard:
Downgrade Lion/Mountain Lion to Snow Leopard
1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner 3.4.1.
If you have Snow Leopard Time Machine backups, do a full system restore per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions. If you have subsequent backups from Lion, you can restore newer items selectively, via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 there, but be careful; some Snow Leopard apps may not work with the Lion files.
Booting From An OS X Installer Disc
1. Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
2. Restart the computer.
3. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
4. Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo appears.
5. Wait for installer to finish loading.

1 )   Hello, i think i saw the answer to my question in a previous post but as it is the first time i have installed a system i would like to make sure i understand properly. I am preparing a computer for sale or giveaway. At the end of the installation it carries on to the Welcome /Registration process, i presume it is at that point i stop, which i did, what baffled me was that there was no way to exit the page and no way to shut the computer down. I turned it off at the power button, is it ok now to pull the plug? And when it is turned back on will it start at the Welcome page and the new owner go on from there?
2 ) Before doing the Erase and Install i had a play around with removing my account. I deleted all private data and browsing history and anything i could find to delete, disabled auto login then i set up a fictitious account and used the admin rights given to that account to remove my proper account. That was all good except when the computer started again it still displayed my name on the panel that comes up saying e.g Joe Bloggs computer.   Is there a way to remove my name from that panel ?   The reason i ask is that a computer can be given away with the OS still in it ready to use with previous details removed but the new owner wouldn't want to see a previous owners name come up.( It didn't appear on the accounts page)
The name must have been put in during the configuration process, how or at what point do i avoid it or perhaps choose just to enter something general such as " my computer" ?    Thanks .

Gidday or i should say good evening.. i didn't leave a computer behind(?)... Before i did the Erase and Install i had as i described it a "play around". I think it was at that point my name still appeared on the start up pane. Then i put the disc in and yes the first time it was just an Upgrade ( i didn't realise) 10.3 to 10.4. I had a look and found the option to Erase and Install which has been done, it will have erased my name but that wasn't the first question... there was no way to exit the Welcome process so do i just pull the plug (its currently just been turned off at the machine itself) leaving it at that point of Welcome/ Registration, and is it now ready to go to a new owner?
As to the other query i am just curious to know if is there a way to remove the name from that pane? I presume i filled in the name somewhere during the Welcome process.
Yes i am aware that recovery can be done and that Erasing etc is the safest way but there was nothing to be of concern on the computer. I wasn't even doing internet banking back on the 10.3.       I have 3 eMacs and will be keeping the other two.

The update to iOS 5.0 or higher is an erase/restore deal, so its important that all of your data be on your computer before you attempt to update.
iOS 6.1.3 will be installed on your phone.

Erased and installed - How do I get to my back up?

Had some problems with my mac and, after discussing with AppleCare, was advised to do an Archive and Install. Did this, and it made things worse (don't ask me why, cause I don't know and neither did the AppleCare guys). So, AppleCare then advised that I erase and install, do a software update and then restore my backed up stuff (photos, files, emails, etc, etc). They specifically said not to copy the whole backed up account over because I might transfer whatever was causing the initial problems. The thing is, I cannot for the life of me figure out how to do this?? I've got a TimeCapsule acting as my router and backup. Before I blew things away, the TimeCapsule was set-up via TimeMachine. I naively thought that I would just be able to go back into TM and reconnect to my TC. TM can see the TC when I select choose backup disk, but I am worried that it will wipe out the backup if I select "Use for backup" i.e. It backs up the newly reinstalled stuff. I've looked at migration assistant, but this looks like it will only copy over Apps, Files and Library settings and not let me grab the things I want. Hoping that someone can help ?

Yes, TM's next backup will back-up all the newly reinstalled stuff (so don't turn it on until you've got your Mac back the way you want it), but it won't wipe out anything, unless it runs out of room and has to delete your oldest backups to make room for the new one.

Migration Assistant lets you "migrate" anything except your top-level System and Library folders. What other things do you want?
You can also use TM to restore any selected files/folders from your backups.
You can choose any or all of User accounts, Applications, etc. What else do you want?

Rerun the Live update and hopefully you will now see a entry for MSI Bluetooth Software in Live driver section.
Install the new version of MSI Bluetooth Software and reboot your computer. Even if the setup program doesnt told you too doit.
After rebooting the computer you will see the Bluetooth icon in the taskbar. If it's Red then try too start the Bluetooth services by right click on the try icon and the only alternetiv there is.
If the Bluetooth services is asking for a valid licens.dat then you should do the following.
Surf to Jon's Bluetooth guide http://www.jonsguides.com./bluetooth/prepare.html and download the patcher from the link there.
Unzip the the patcher and then run the BTWPatcher.exe program.
Now the Bluetooth services will start and you will bee able too configure your own settings for the Bluetooth services.
If nothing of this work you could try the complete Bluetooth solution at Jon's gudie and install the IBM version of the same program. I havent test this solution and will not do soo.

How can I reformat my hard drive if erase and partition don't work in disk utility and I get an error when I try to erase and install from the Leopard install disk? I have had several kernel panics, but the volume shows up in startup disk.

I have had several kernel panics on my iBook G4; the panic message shows up just after the desktop appears. Although the startup volume shows up in Startup Disk, the installation disk reports an error when I attempt an erase and install. Disk utility is unable either to erase or partition the hard drive. The hard drive shows up in disk utility, but the startup volume doesn’t HELP!!!

Do you have the original system discs that came with the iBook when it was new?

Do you have access to another Mac with a disk drive? If so you can do it in one of two ways:
1 - on the Mac with the optical drive launch Disk Utility and make a disk image of the iLife 11 disk. Connect the two Macs together and transfer the disk image to your MacBook Air. Mount the disk image and install from it. I have my iLife disks saved that way for quick and easy reinstall when necessary.
2 - connect the two Mac together so you can access the MBA from the Mac with the disk drive. Insert the iLife disk, and install from the second Mac to the MBA.
