How to erase and start over on mac air

Click here and follow the instructions. If the computer originally shipped with Mac OS X 10.6.8 or earlier, when you reach step 5, connect its original thumbdrive, restart with the C or Option key held down, use the Disk Utility to erase the internal drive, and install a fresh OS.

  • How to delete and start over?

    Greetings!
    I have several Shockwave folders scattered throughout my Mac G5 (OS 4.11).
    I have to use a web site that required Shockwave 10.  I have ver's 10 and 11 on my computer.  But after the Shockwave player (I don't know which one) loads both Safari and Firefox both freeze.
    I have trashed the Shockwave 8 folder leaving me with ver's 10 & 11
    I have trashed the preferences folders as per the help files posted here.
    Still it freezes
    What I'd like to do is start over and trash everyting of Shockware and install Shockwave 10 fresh.
    Could sombody please tell me how I can wipe everything off the computer so I ca do a fresh install?
    I did a search for "Shockwave" and I call see where all the files are that begin with "Shockwave" but I don't know if dragging everything to the trash is going to make things worse.
    I have a Shockwave uninstaller, but I believe that is only going to uninstall Ver 11.  Will that software uninstall everyting Shockwave on my computer.
    Thanks to anyone out there who can help.

    If there are problems with updating then best is to download the full version and uninstall the currently installed version and delete the Firefox program folder to remove any leftover files.
    Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.
    *Firefox 9.0.x: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all.html
    Uninstall your current Firefox version, if possible.
    *Do NOT remove personal data when you uninstall the current version or you lose your bookmarks and other data because all profile folders will be removed.
    Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.
    *It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
    *http://kb.mozillazine.org/Uninstalling_Firefox
    Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere in the Firefox Profile Folder and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.

  • Format and start over?

    I have been reading about all the problems people are having with the latest update and am experienceing some of the same issues. I have not had a mac for very long but would like to know how to format and start over if I can't boot in to OS X. It just has the logo appear and goes no further.

    Sorry, Ive been well...next lets try to repair you HD a different way. Try to start your mac in Single-User mode(Listen for the tone and press and hold the Command(Apple)+S keys until the logo appears...if this works you will go to a black screen with text--command-line interface---when it finishes and you get a command prompt type
    /sbin/fsck -fy
    <Press Return>
    If it finishes and says your hd has been modified--Do it again.
    run it until it says the hd is OK
    then type
    reboot
    good luck, glynn

  • How to erase everything in iTunes and start over

    I now realize that I have TWO of each file and that NEITHER file shows the play count and rating from my previous computer. Furthermore, none of my playlists show up.
    For this reason, I would like to know how I can erase EVERYTHING in my iTunes library (music, videos, etc.) and start over.
    I used this tutorial to move all my music: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300173
    Someone please tell me how I can erase everything and start over so I can transfer all my music and playlists and music information (stars, play counts) from my iBook to my MacBook.

    I've transferred music between computers like that, and I have NEVER been able to transfer play counts and ratings, which can be pretty frustrating, but hey at least you have all your music. If you want to start over, just select all your iTunes songs and erase them, and then open the music files on your harddrive or iPod or wherever they are, and you should be fine. If it bothers you seeing a zero next to the playcount, you can try hiding the playcount under the settings so you won't be reminded of it. I don't think it's possible to transfer playcounts, but if it is then good luck, and I hope this helps!

  • Blue screen after reinstall of 10.1, how to remove OS X and start over?

    I updated 10.1 to 10.1.5 a month ago, then Software Update found additional updates to 10.1.5. After running them, several applications (especially Flash) stopped working correctly.
    I attempted Disk Utility etc and found nothing wrong. I then attempted to uninstall 10.1.5 with the original 10.1 install disc but it does not allow that option. In desperation I tried installing 10.1 from the DVD, which it said was successful, but on reboot (after the normal MAc OSX bootup window) I get a blue screen with black-lettered clock in the upper right and a moveable mouse pointer but no desktop and all keys give only the submarine sound.
    I am now running from the 10.1 System on another drive.
    How do I remove all OSX stuff from my original hardrive and start over?

    You cannot install a previous version of OS X over a more recent version without first erasing the hard drive (at least in your case because of the versions involved.) To reinstall 10.1 over 10.1.5 requires that you erase the hard drive, then install 10.1.
    You might have saved some time and trouble by simply updating the software that wasn't working to newer versions that are compatible with the version of OS X you have installed.

  • The spinning "wheel of death" does NOT go away! I've loaded too much stuff on my computer (including the entire Adobe CS6 software) and I want to delete everything on my macbook pro and start over? How do I clean everything up without buying MacKeeper?

    I use my MacBook Pro (Late 2009) for EVERYTHING and I have loaded so many apps, even doubles of some, I think!   My computer is running really SLOW and I think it is because I don't have enough memory.
    I just installed the new Adobe CS6 and that was a BIG mistake.  The spinnning wheel of death doesn't stop! I wish I could load that program on my computer so I can use it "on the go", but I can't stand the spinning wheel!
    I want to clean up my computer and get rid of EVERYTHING on it!!     Then, re-install the factory settings to run Lion.  I believe this will make the wheel stop spinning.
    However, how do I make sure that all of the extra stuff that is attached to the app, ( including all the cache') is deleted too?   I don't want to have to buy MacKeeper!
    I am hoping the computer wizards or the apple team can give me an answer on how to clean up everything and start over.  I have saved everything on my desktop mac.

    Thank you so much for the help!  I had heard bad things about MacKeeper and I don't want to screw up my macbook  any more than it already is!  I will do as you suggest.  Do you believe this is the best solution for the problem I described?
    Should I load my Adobe Creative Suite 6 (in the cloud version) on an external hard drive?
    I am so tired of this spinning wheel....should I avoid putting the CS6 on my macbook pro altogether?
    I have it on my desk top mac, but wanted to be able to take the photo editing with me when I am "out and about".  I know I should probably buy the ipad, which would transport much easier, but even the ipad probably doesn't have the capacity to hold all the Adobe CS6 apps, correct?

  • How to erase and install new version os Mac Os X?

    Can someone tell me how to erase and install new copy of Mac OS X 10.5.8 ?? IS there a way to do this without CD?? I no longer have the disks and I cant find a way to get this done.. The reason I want to do this is because a 12 year old was using this computer for a long time and there is a lot of junk stuff on the disk, so I want to start from fresh.
    Thank you in advance.
    Yani.

    Hi Yani,
    Your out of luck without an Install Disc, & on dangerous ground also.
    2 ways to go...
      1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
       2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
          *Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
       3. Click the Erase tab.
       4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
       5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
       6. Highlight the drive, select Partition Tab, then Format type... MacOS Extended Journalled, select the Security Options button, choose Zero Out Data, Erase... after completion do a new install.
    Or...
    Open System Preferences>Accounts, unlock the lock, click on the little plus icon, make a new admin account, log out & into the new account.
    In the same pref pane highlight your old account, click the little minus icon, then use Disk Utility to Secure Erase Free Space.

    You may have to do this several times.
    Saw this solution on another post about an iPad in a school environment. Might work on your iPad so you won't lose everything.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    ‘iPad is disabled’ fix without resetting using iTunes
    Today I met my match with an iPad that had a passcode entered too many times, resulting in it displaying the message ‘iPad is disabled – Connect to iTunes’. This was a student iPad and since they use Notability for most of their work there was a chance that her files were not all backed up to the cloud. I really wanted to just re-activate the iPad instead of totally resetting it back to our default image.
    I reached out to my PLN on Twitter and had some help from a few people through retweets and a couple of clarification tweets. I love that so many are willing to help out so quickly. Through this I also learned that I look like Lt. Riker from Star Trek (thanks @FillineMachine).
    Through some trial and error (and a little sheer luck), I was able to reactivate the iPad without loosing any data. Note, this will only work on the computer it last synced with. Here’s how:
    1. Configurator is useless in reactivating a locked iPad. You will only be able to completely reformat the iPad using Configurator. If that’s ok with you, go for it – otherwise don’t waste your time trying to figure it out.
    2. Open iTunes with the iPad disconnected.
    3. Connect the iPad to the computer and wait for it to show up in the devices section in iTunes.
    4. Click on the iPad name when it appears and you will be given the option to restore a backup or setup as a new iPad (since it is locked).
    5. Click ‘Setup as new iPad’ and then click restore.
    6. The iPad will start backing up before it does the full restore and sync. CANCEL THE BACKUP IMMEDIATELY. You do this by clicking the small x in the status window in iTunes.
    7. When the backup cancels, it immediately starts syncing – cancel this as well using the same small x in the iTunes status window.
    8. The first stage in the restore process unlocks the iPad, you are basically just canceling out the restore process as soon as it reactivates the iPad.
    If done correctly, you will experience no data loss and the result will be a reactivated iPad. I have now tried this with about 5 iPads that were locked identically by students and each time it worked like a charm.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Try it and good luck. You have nothing more to lose if it doesn't work for you.
     Cheers, Tom

  • Can't download Mavericks. Download is stuck. How can I stop it and start over?

    Tried to download it several weeks ago and closed my macbook about halfway through. The download wouldn't resume. My only options are pausing and resuming it, neither of which work. It's just stuck there. My launchpad icon has the download bar underneath it halfway complete. How can I just cancel it and start over?

    Hello! I have a MacBookPro5,1. I recently had to erase the disk and start over. So right now I have OS X 10.5.5. what is the best(cheapest/fastest) way to get current on my OS to be able to use current websites and programs? thanks!
    Right now there is pretty much nothing on it, and I cant download basic things.

    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
    You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
    After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mavericks if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
    Upgrading to Mavericks
    You can upgrade to Mavericks from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mavericks can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for FREE.
    Upgrading to Mavericks
    To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Download Mavericks from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mavericks is free. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
        OS X Mavericks- System Requirements
          Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mavericks
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
