I would do it manually.  As you can see from turingtest2's post, some duplicates are not really duplicates.
I would also review how you add media to iTunes.  It should not be producing all that many duplicates.

  • ANYBODY KNOW HOW TO ERASE A SONG ON THE IPOD CLASSIC?

Does anybody know how to erase a song from an ipod classic?

You remove it from the list of items in iTunes set to sync with the iPod, or if syncing it manually, select the iPod in the iTunes source list, find that music, and press Delete.

  • How do I delete songs from library but not my ipod

    Hi,
    Can anyone help me.
I want to delete songs that in my library to increase the memory on my pc, but if I de-select them, they will be deleted from my ipod.
I want to keep all the songs in my ipod but add to them later, how do i do this.
also, i may wish to delete songs later, but again how do i do this if i have deleted my library.
    scott.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
    Set iPod to manual update.
But be warned, if something happens to your iPod later, you may risk losing your songs. Better backup your songs first before deleting them from the computer.

  • How to add more songs in library at a time?

i can only add up to 5 songs or less depending the size of the song, i think. anyone knows how i can change this setting? i look in the preferences and no luck.
    HELP!!

There's no setting for this as it's not a built-in limit. If you can't add more than five tracks or so at a time, there's something wrong with your iTunes. If you can post details about how you're adding the tracks and exactly what goes wrong, including any error messages you may be getting, perhaps someone can help sort things out.
    Regards.

  • How to mass relocate songs in library?

Long story short, my music folder used to be at C:/Users/myname/Music, and now it's at a network-mapped drive at J:/Music. I don't want to have to remake/reorganize my library and playlists, so I still have my iTunes folder (from C:/Users/myname/Music/iTunes) containing my original library.
Of course, every item in my library now shows up with a ! next to it, asking me to locate the song. All of my music is in exactly the same folder structure as it was before, just in a different location. I've tried editing the C:\Users\myname\Music\iTunes\iTunes Music Library.xml file in notepad using replace, to change all "C:/Users/myname/Music" to "J:/Music", but after saving and closing the file, iTunes just reverts everything back.
Is there any way to easily tell iTunes to use a new location for all my music?

Hmm, must be something different about it being a networked drive, then, and not just moving the entire /Music folder to a USB drive and using the shift-start.
If you want to use an edited XML file, you have to damage the ITL file.
iTunes has to have an ITL file to open & run. There are 3 ways it gets one:
    1) If no ITL file exists, it creates a new one (blank library)
    2) If it finds an existing ITL, it uses it and ignores the XML file.
    3) If it finds a damaged ITL, it looks for an XML file and tries to rebuild the ITL from that.
You need to edit the XML file and replace all the paths like you did before.
Then damage the itl. WIth itunes closed, open the existing ITL in WordPad, select everything, and hit delete. Save it with zero bytes (nothing) in it.
This will force itunes to re-create it by looking at the XML file.
This will save all the metadata except for Date Added.

  • How do you remove songs from library that were deleted through the finder?

    Hi All,
I deleted several hundred songs through the finder, but they are still listed in the iTunes Library.  Is there any way to have iTunes scan for missing audio files and remove them from the list?  I can do it manually, but I was hoping there was a way for iTunes to scan for missing media.
    Thanks!

Search Doug's AppleScripts for iTunes for something like "dead tracks", or just browse his scripts. You should find a script that will do this. I know that there were at least one or two, but I can't access Doug's site right now to get the exact names.
    Regards.

  • MY LAPTOP CRASHED BUT MY LIBRARY IS ON MY HOME PC HOW CAN I GET THE LIBRARY BACK TO MY LAPTOP WITHOUT ERASING THE SONGS I REPURCHASED

HOW CAN I MOVE LIBRARY FROM ONE PC TO MY LAPTOP WITHOUT ERASING REPURCHASED SONGS ON MY LAPTOP

I had the similar problem last night and found a solution (although it takes more than a few clicks).  Highlight all the album tracks in itunes on the pc and right click "get info". Check the artwork box in this window.  I found that the now playing art was showing up in the itunes window, but on songs that were missing artwork showed nothing in the get info box.  When I replaced the artwork by using the artwork command, or manually adding it into the "get info" window.  It was annoying but my iphone updated every album.

  • How can i erase dublicate songs easily from my iTune library.

I have almost 8000 songs in my iTune and most of them have dublicates. How can i easily erase dublicate songs?

First you want to identify the duplicate songs, to do this you can go to File and from there select Show Duplicates.  If you have a way to distinguish ones from the others you should be able to do it quite fast.  For example, organize them by Genre, or by Last time played.
If you can't tell them apart this way then you'll have to go about it manually.  I *think* there's an app that sorts out your library for you too but I can't remember the name, or where I saw it.

  • How to download mp3 to iphone G3 from  from library on new computer with erasing all songs on iphone now?

how do  I download a mp3 from the itunes library on a new athorized computer to my iphone G3 with out erasing all songs on my iphone ow?

Yes. That's what will happen. As I said, you can only sync to 1 iTunes database at a time. In order to set up a sync relationship with the new iTunes library, the media on your phone will be erased and replaced by media in the new iTunes library.

How do i erase a song in my logic library

Don't try it from within Logic, do it from the Finder. And if the project is still open in Logic, you can't trash it (or better: OS X won't let you empty the trash until you've closed the document.)

  • How can I transfer songs from Ipod to Itunes library?

I recently lost my entire Itunes library but still had songs on my Ipod. Now when I try to rebuild my library by transferring songs FROM my Ipod TO the Itunes library, I am unable to. There are a million help subjects of how to transfer your songs from the library to the ipod but none about how to transfer them back and I can't figure it out. Please help!

Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you use our iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. The transfer of content sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:

If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.
