if you want to delete ONLY the songs and KEEP everything else:
1) In iTunes, click on the iPad -> Under devices
2) under the " Music " tab, UNCHECK "sync music"
3) then click : "sync" @ the bottom right
You need to do a if you want to delete everything FACTORY RESTORE:
1) Connect Ipad to computer
2) Open "iTunes"
3) Click on "Ipad" on the left of iTunes
4) Click Restore
** Note: Don't Restore from a Back-up

Do they have a cloud icon next to them? If they do, they aren't on the iPad so you can't delete them. They are in iCloud ready for you to download them if you want to and they are visible in the music app for this purpose.
If you don't want to see these songs that are in iCloud, go to Settings> iTunes & App Store>Show all>Music>Off.

I've read several threds from users asking how to remove songs from the iPad 1.0, but have not found anyone with the symptoms mine has.
For some unknown reason, the checkbox next to each song to remove them from the iPad is disabled.
My latest attempt at removing all of the music was to tell iTunes to "Sync Music" with "Entire Music Library' selected. That caused iTunes to push all 2700+ songs to the iPad. I checked to see if I could remove the songs from the iPad by de-selecting the checkbox, but the checkbox was still disabled.
So I told iTunes to stop syncing Music. I acknowledged the warning message that this would remove all songs from the iPad. Perfect - remove everything and I'll manually add the songs I want to put back on. However, the results were not what was intended... I am back to where I started:
When I open "Music" on my iPad, it shows lots of albums and songs (over 2700).
When I view my iPad using iTunes, "Sync Music" is disabled and the capacity indicator shows 11.1GB of space allocated to audio files.
When I view my iPad's Music folder using iTunes, it shows only 3 albums.
At this point, I am thinking my only option is to wipe the iPad and manually add everything back on. I'd rather not do that... but am out of options I can think of.

I cannot delete music from my iPad2. I've gone into iTunes and selected to manually manage my music. When I click on my iPad and then MUSIC, I don't see any songs listed. When I look at my iPad itself under usic there are a ton there. I just want to keep my iPad free of music. I don't need my music on my phone and my iPOD (yes, I still use an iPOD and I still like my music SEPARATE.)

The only pics that can be deleted directly on the phone are pics in your camera roll. Photos in your camera roll can also be first imported to your computer & then deleted from your camera roll by whatever image capture program you use. The rest are removed through the sync process in itunes by un-checking them under the photos tab & then syncing. They will then be removed from your phone.

I know this is strictly not an Apple question but I have looked around and cannot find an answer to my problem. I have an MP3 player. It is formatted to DOS FAT.
I can add mp3 songs without any problem to the MP3 player by just attaching it to a USB cable and then moving songs from iTunes Library by drag and drop.
I am having trouble erasing songs from the mp3 player.
I put the songs I do not want into Trash by dragging and dropping or by just choosing Put into Trash and they disappear from the window.
However, the songs are still on the mp3 player and I can still play them.
I have tried deleting the files from the mp3 player itself but it doesn't work either.
I am now thinking of formatting the mp3 player and erasing the disk using Disk Utility. Will that work? Or would that mean that my mp3 player will no longer function as an mp3 player?
The documentation is in a non-English language as the mp3 player was bought overseas so I can't get help from the mp3 manufacturer's website.
Any suggestions?
I don't want to muck up the mp3 player so that I cannot listen to music. I'd rather keep the unwanted songs than do that because I will have to visit the A/S center to make the mp3 function again and that's a lot of bother. So that's why I am checking here first before I do anything drastic.

I found what the problem was (kind of) ...
When I tried to delete the songs that shouldn't be there, the delete function wouldn't work. When I pressed the button for "delete file", instead of deleting the file, it would take me to the first song which I didn't want to delete.
What I did in the end was:
* I chose the first song (which was meant to be there).
* I chose "Delete everything" ---> This time the delete function worked properly and the disk was wiped empty.
* I then added all the songs I wanted individually again to the mp3 player.
* I checked the mp3 player after adding the desired songs --- all the undesired songs had disappeared (unlike last time when they were still on the mp3 player even after I had removed them using the hard drive of my computer to open the mp3 player and delete the songs).
The problem was that the delete function didn't work properly when I was trying to delete the undesired songs (that weren't meant to be there as I had taken them to the Trash on my hard drive).
I might try your suggestion next time. I presume you mean empty the Trash on my mac. My mp3 player doesn't have a Trash folder (not that I can see anyway).

You can delete the screenshots and photos saved from emails on the iPad, but the photos that were synced are added and deleted using iTunes.
So, just remove the duplicates from the folder or album that was selected in iTunes and sync the iPad again.

I am not familiar with a song being greyed out, but with a song that is appearing normally, you can swipe a finger over it from left to right. The red "Delete" button should appear. If you delete music from your iTunes library and then sync your phone the deleted music will be removed from your phone too. However, by design, songs will not be deleted your iTunes library just because you delete them from your phone. (People often delete music from their phone in order to free up space but want to keep the songs in their iTunes library in case they want to play them there or on other devices, or want to keep the option of syncing them back to the phone in the future.)

If you have iTunes 11 turn on the Sidebar. Go to iTunes>View and click on Show Sidebar. You can also do a Crtl+S to show the sidebar. The sidebar is where Devices appears. and Control+B to show the Menu bar
To import music into your iTunes library on the computer go to iTunes>Help>iTunes Help>Add items to iTunes and follow the instructions
To sync to your iPod go to iTunes>Help>iTunes Help>Sync your iPod....>Sync You Device and follow the instructions.
