This problem happened to me a month ago. The way I used to fix it:
1. Go it DFU Mode. For going into that, check this page.
2. Connect your iPod to your PC which has iTunes and iTunes will detect your iPod in recovery mode.
3. Press Shift + Restore if you have the .ipsw firmware file downloaded on your windows PC or just click Restore and follow the instructions to download the firmware file.
4. Wait and finally you're done!

Let your ipod die. Then when it is dead charge it adn turn it back on. After that it should be fine.

My home computer recently went down . it was restored by an expert who put three peoples itunes libraries into one. now I cant sync my ipod touch because it is not paired. I also cant access most of the music without knowing exactly were it came from

my son , my wife and I all had I-tunes libraries off various i-pod touches and I phones. The computer crashed and the expert lumped all the songs onto one library in the administrator desk top of the refigured computer. Now we cannot access any of the music unless we know how to locate it, which could take forever with 311 albums. If you want to keep the old one, you'll have to buy a new iPod at the normal full price. Apple gives a reduced price for out-of-warranty replacements because the take the returned iPod, refurbish it, and use it as a service replacement for someone else.

If you remeber the password to that Apple ID then follow these steps
1 - Make sure you have an email address that is NOT an Apple ID
2 - Go to AppleID.Apple.com
3 - Where it reads Manage Apple ID - Sign in
Once you are signed in want to make sure the email address you are wanting to use is NOT set up as a "Recovery/Rescue" email for this account.
[To check this - Main page where you see Primary ID - below do you see the email address you want to use listed towards the bottom? Yes - Delete / No - Good ./. If made any adjustments "Save" Next on the left select "Password & Security" - Answer your security questions you set up "if you have any" then scroll towards the bottom and check to see if you see the email address you want to use. Yes - Delete / No - Good] <-> Also you can change your password on this page as well. Any adjustments made "Save"
Once this is done go back to the main page where you should read "Primary ID" and change the email address that is showing to the new email address youo want. "Save" Done

Thanks Barney, I tried that but all that comes up in Spotlight are the log files that show the file paths! I don't know how Steam works. Are all the files held by Steam on their server perhaps?

It sounds that you are running the same iCloud account with two phones. I recommend you to create a different iCloud account and you should be all set.

You cannot get around Activation Lock without the oringinal owner disassociating the iPad from their account.

If you can't remember your passcode, you'll have to restore it to remove the passcode, as explained here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1212.
If you're running iOS 7 with Fid My iPod enabled, in order to restore it you'll have to force it into recovery mode as explained here: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1808, or erased it using Find My iPhone on icloud.com if your home button isn't working (see http://help.apple.com/icloud/#/mmfc0ef36f).
