How to estimate WIFI coverage given an AP and Antenna?

Hi guys,
I want to use Cisco Access point to extend coverage on a college campus.
My question is how do I determine the range of the wireless signal before actual deployment.. say if I mount the antenna on my building and the parking lot is immediately adjacent to it, how deep into the parking lot will my signal be. I would like to know how to calculate this (or at least roughly estimate it). Once I've estimated the range and coverage patterns, then I can estimate the total amount of AP's that we will require to achieve total coverage on the campus. (Note that our goal is to achieve coverage outside... we already have wireless AP's inside each of the buildings on the campus)
For the purpose of discussion:
I was looking at the Cisco Aeronet 3500 series AP (I'm aware that I will need a 5508 wireless controller)
and I plan to use external antennas Cisco AIR-ANT25137NP-R
Looking at the spec sheet for the antenna, I can see the "antenna pattern", but it's not function of distance. I know a lot of factors can influence the range, but it would be nice to have a ballpark (square footage coverage etc.)
Any help would be appreciated.

     In terms of the density per access point, the rule of thumb is 20-25 users per ap, but it could be less than that or more than that depending on the traffic patterns. Think of it this way, a wireless access point is more like a hub than a switch because it's a shared media. So if you have a typical 802.11g access point and you have a 54mbps link your actual throughput is probably closer to 36mbps; so a 54 mbps link really has a maximum of 36mbps throughput and you have 3 users on the access point trying to watch streaming video they each could concievably get 12mbps of average throughput each since 12mpbs x 3 users = 36mbps; but if you had 100 users and each one was only passing say 100k of traffic then thoretically you could get like 360 users on that access point (36,000,000 bps / 100,000bps = 360 users). There are some other factors that play into this like retries, CTS, etc.... but that's why the typical rule of thumb is 20-25 users per radio on an access point.
     In terms of approved antennas it's not Cisco that certifies the antenna, it more to do with the local governments restrictions, I'd read thru this document in Section A9 covers the questions you have regarding your certification question. Always remember that the restriction is based on the EIRP of your system and if the antenna gain is too high you can lower your transmitter power to get in compliance (Typically).

     In terms of antennas, you can use a single antenna or seperate antennas either will work, you could also look at www.terrawave.com they have similar antennas; although typically it's best to stay with a purely Cisco solution.

How to extend wifi range using Airport Extreme and Airport Express connected via ethernet cable

I'm having an Airport Extreme fifth generation in my living room. I bought yesterday an Airport Express to extend the range of my WIFI in the house and I put in in my bed room. The two devices are connected together via an ethernet cable, from airport extreme (lan 1 port) to airport express to (wan port). Now from the airport utility what configuration I have to set to the airport express in order to extend my wifi range? Inside the wireless tab what i have to select in the network mode?
1. Create a wireless network (use same same wireless network name and pass work as the airport extreme)
2. Join a wireless network
3 Extend a wireless network ?

You are way overthinking this. The utility will literally configure everything for you automatically. All that you need to do is name the device and click Next during the setup.
You can use your Mac using Mountain Lion or an iPhone or iPad.
Post back if you need the steps.

WiFi coverage indicator not visible

Dear forummembers,
I developped my first theme in Plazmic Theme Builder (as part of Plazmic CDK 4.6) and also designed indicators for batterystatus, signalcoverage and WiFi coverage. The battery- and signal coverage indicators show up nicely but the WiFi coverage indicator (in the original theme the triangular shape with the expanding waves next to it) does not show. The only indication on WiFi is the WiFi-logo, eather light-grey (WiFi available) or dark-grey (WiFi not available). WiFi as such works but my indicator on signalstrength does not.
The graphic needed is ok (in 1 row of five equally shaped graphics) and the creationprocess of the Plazmic themecreator did not generate any error (I know it does when the graphic does not meet required specs).
If I look at the WiFi diagnostics, it shows a signallevel of -59 dBm and a speed of 54 Mbps. By the way, in this menu the original indicator does show up and works.
What am I doing wrong?

My iTunes library is much larger than my 4g Ipod Touch. with iTunes match can I control what songs are on my iTouch when I will be out of WiFi coverage.

Any clue regarding the size of the row in the 900 transactions per day?
Will there be a single table updated per transaction or multiple tables?
Will the transaction be of type insert mostly?
If it is going to be insert only, then probably you can estimate the database size based on size of row * 900 transactions per day... You need to consider if there will be other tables affected via triggers.
Also, the size of the indexes defined on these tables will contribute to the database size.
No idea as to what do you mean by 12,200 items.

Increasing Wireless Range - By CharlesH
There is a lot you can do to increase the range of your wireless router. Please note, not everything is going to work. If you have brick walls, a couple of frigerators and a big screen TV near the router, this will kill the potential range of your router. Lastly, keep in mind of other devices that could interfere with your router. Wireless A/B/G routers operate at 2.4 Gigahertz, and so do a lot of cordless phones! It is suggested to change the wireless channel on the router first just to make sure you're avoiding any possible interference on the first few channels.
Location, location, location. It is known that the best location of the router is in the middle and highest part of your house. Typically, the wi-fi signal travels like the shape of an umbrella. Depending on how you were installed, it may be hard to change the location of your router. If you are using a coax or MOCA connection, you can connect your wireless router to any existing (and working) coax outlets or use a splitter in conjunction with an existing coax run. So simply changing the location of the router may increase range in your home or business.
Antennas? You can increase the range cheaply by simply purchasing a new antenna. There is a good review of the different types of antennas here: http://www.radiolabs.com/Articles/wifi-antenna.html
For the most part you will see omni-directional & directional antennas in the store. In normal circumstances, you can usually gain 25 feet ~ 75 feet, or even more depending on the antenna.
If antennas still are not working for you, the next device to try is a "wireless repeater". You will see these labeled as range extenders or range expanders. They can help extend the range of any wireless device in the house and are very easy to configure.
Lastly, the last way to get a signal to the other side of the house is using a wall plugged extender kit. They will take the Ethernet signal and send it through your powerline to another outlet. Then from there you could hook up an access point, a router, a computer, you name it. This is the best solution when you have brick walls and a lot of wireless interference.

If you can see the iCloud contacts in Outlook, you can copy them back to your PC by selecting all the contacts (click one, then press Control-A), then drag and drop the selected contacts to Contacts under My Contacts on the left sidebar of Outlook.
If you want to copy your calendar back to Outlook, select your iCloud calendar on the left sidebar of Outlook, switch to the list view (select View from the ribbon, then click Change View>List), select your events (click on a single event, then press Control-A), then control drag and drop them to Calendar under My Calendars on the left sidebar.
Then you can sign out of iCloud on the iCloud control panel and your local copies will still be there. If you want to add your iCloud email account back to iCloud, you can do this with these settings: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4864.

You really should download and read the user guide that roaminggnome gave you the link for in the post above.
If you want to totally start from scratch and erase all of her content go to Settings>General>Reset>Erase All Content and Settings. This removes everything from the device and returns it to out of the box status. You can also restore the iPad as a new device in iTunes and that erases everything as well. This article explains that process.

If you each have separate iCloud accounts with different IDs, you can add the other person's account to your device(s) by going to Settings>Mail,Contacts,Calendars>Add Account>iCloud and signing in with their ID. These "secondary accounts" will sync mail, contacts, calendars, reminders and notes.
