How to exclude top-level keywords from export?

Hi,
I have keywords organised into a hierarchical structure; I never want the top-level keywords to appear in the exported image but can't find a quick way to do it.
I can make it work by going to one of it's children and editing that keyword tag, unchecking the "export containing keywords" however I can't see a way of batch performing this action and the number of keywords I have make it impractical to do one by one.
I tried clicking on the top-level keyword and unchecking the export option. It still exports and is even listed when I make the keyword tags dropdown "Will Export".
If any of your gurus know the answer or can explain how I am misunderstanding the export terminology, please let me know...
Thanks,
Steve
PS I have tried exporting with & without option "Write Keywords as Lightroom Hierachy"

Thanks for that - its nearly right but I had tried doing that already and it didn't work.
The reason why is when simply unchecked the Export Containing Keywords and Export Synonyms remain ticked but greyed out. I assumed that having been greyed out they are no longer effecting the output in any way but I was wrong.
So, simply uncheck ALL the items in that dialogue box for top-level terms.
Thanks again!

  • How can i NOT include top level keyword in the metadata of an image?

    Hello,
    I want to know how can i NOT include top level keyword in the metadata of an image. I know there is an option for not applying a keyword to an exported image, but is there an option for not applying the top level keyword to the actual image?
    I have organized my geographical (by location) keywords like this:
    Places
    USA
    New York
    Miami
    Spain.
    If i add geographical keywords to all my images, all my images will have the keyword "Places", i dont think that it have any sence to have all your images with one keyword. How can i fix this? Any sugestion? i will appreciate it a lot any help or information that you could give me.
    Excuse my english, i know it is not good. I hope that you could understand me.
    Thanks,
    Marcelo :)

    Explicitly excluding a keyword only applies when "exporting". Unfortunately, there's currently no way to stop the keyword being written to the file when "Save Metadata to File" command is used. The natural reaction of users to this difference is to suggest that it is stupid. Nevertheless, there are good reasons why the difference exists:
    1. "Export" creates a new file whereas "Save Metadata to File" writes the metadata back into the existing file.
    2. There are very good reasons why certain keywords should not be written to file, and the example given in the OP is one. Saving metadata to file is more often used as means of backing up important image related metadata, independently of the catalog or allowing the metadata to be visible in other aplications. It would be rare that such a file would be shared with a third party, so the reason for not including certain keywords is less obvious. Actually, not including it can result in no end of confusion and grief. For example, if the top level (or any keyword) was excluded during the save metadata process then the other keywords would be orphaned when image is imported back into the catalog (e.g. buiding a new catalog).
    The development team are aware of the need, in some circumstances, to exclude certain keywords when save metadata command is used. How and when the issue is resolved, without adding even more confusion/complexity, is some way off.

  • Top-level Keyword dilemma- can someone explain "include"?

    Aloha fellow LR users! I use LR 1.4.1 and LR2beta on windows Vista 32 PC. My problem is with top-level keywords. I have read many blogs and other keyword procedure specific tutorials on the web. Most all of them are extremely useful and enlightening, but none of them seem to explain the option definitions for keywords in terms that I understand.
    If I right-click and choose edit keyword a dialogue box presents several options, some of which depend on whether an image is selected or not. Ill proceed as if no image is selected.
    Three basic options (numbered here for reference only) are checked by default:
    1-Include on Export
    2-Export containing keywords
    3-Export synonyms
    Option 3, I pretty much understand and I get that synonyms are NOT included on Export when the option to maintain LR hierarchy is UNCHECKED in the Export dialogue box.
    My real question boils down to; do these options only refer to actual exports or do they affect the keywords applied to an image?
    Okay, I dont use the traditional controlled vocabulary that serious pro level photographers use, but I have created one that works for me. There are times when I would prefer the top-level keyword NOT be included in the metadata. Is that even possible using LR? I assumed that de-selecting option 1 would prevent it from being included, but it hasnt worked for me.
    If anyone can enlighten me with defining these options, I would be grateful.
    Thank you.

    >My real question boils down to; do these options only refer to actual exports or do they affect the keywords applied to an image?
    Yes they do refer to export. Lightroom will apply the keywords to your image regardless of these export settings.
    >2-Export containing keywords
    When on will export Parent,Child
    When off will export Child only.
    The option on the export page "Write Keywords as Lightroom Hierarchy" uses the | (vertical bar or pipe) as keyword hierarchy separator and will write keywords as
    Parent|Child when checked
    Parent.....Child when not checked (..... represents tab character)
    >There are times when I would prefer the top-level keyword NOT be included in the metadata. Is that even possible using LR? I assumed that de-selecting option 1 would prevent it from being included, but it hasnt worked for me.
    When you add a keyword to an image the Parent is also added. There is no option to turn this off. Neither can you create a Top Level keyword tag using the same name as an existing Child keyword. But you can choose to export only Child keywords using option 2 in your list.

  • Top-level keyword problem

    I have just two hierarchical levels in my keyword list - for example "animal species", which contains lion, tiger, bear,etc. "Bird species", which includes pelican, flamingo, etc.
    The top level words are set not to export, and if I export a dng as tiff, of course they don't carry through to the tiff.
    My problem is I'm re-doing all my keywords, assigning them to the raw, then using exiftools to copy them to the tiff (could just as well be vice-versa, doesn't make any difference). In this case there is no exporting. The tiff were long ago exported and have been finalized. I'm not re-exporting them from raw. The new keywords are just being written into the xmp for both tifand dng. Since the files have not been exported per se, the top-level keywords do show up if I browse the files in other programs that read iptc.
    Any thoughts? I don't want any of these top level keywords to carry through when other programs that read iptc handle the files. They do not show up in the "Keyword Tags" field under the "Keywording" section header, or I would just do a select all and delete them from there. I don't want to remove them from my keyword list though, as I like the help they provide in organizing the keywords.

    The same problem from 2007 - no answer then

    How to exclude a particular value from the selection in the infopackage.
    Ex: not load for cost center 10000
    Thank you,

    Hi Sam,
    You cannot do this directly as exclusion, but you can include all other values, even as ranges and thus exclude the particular value, else you can also try to do this by writing a routine.
    Hope this helps...

  • How to exclude restricted-use batch from batch-determination in backflushin

    Hello,
    In the Goods-Movement screen during confirmation transaction (i.e. backflushing), we see that SAP has selected some batches that are restricted-use stock.  This must be due to some setting in batch-determination functionality.  We want to know how to exclude restricted-use stocks from being considered in batch-determination.  What setting, in which config transaction, can help us achieve this ?  Kindly help.  Thanks.
    - Chetan

    Thanks Manoj,
    That was a very good information and I learnt something new.
    However, I checked, and in that config, we are already "not-allowing" restricted-use stock for MvT-261.  So what else can be used to prohibit its selection during backflushing.  Thanks.

  • How to exclude music and pictures from backing with USMT in SCCM 2012 SP1?

    How to exclude music and pictures from backing with USMT in SCCM 2012 SP1?
    I know we can use config.xml but I m not sure what all steps to take.
    Below is my understanding
    1. Create Custom.xml file using below
      <component context="System" type="Documents">
            <displayName>Test</displayName>
            <role role="Data">
                <rules>
                 <unconditionalExclude>
                            <objectSet>
        <script>MigXmlHelper.GenerateDrivePatterns ("* [*.mp3]", "Fixed")</script>
                            </objectSet>
                 </unconditionalExclude>
                </rules>
            </role>
        </component>
    </migration>
    2. Save as Custom.xml.
    3. Copy it to USMT source files package in both the x86 and x64 subfolders and update the relevant USMT package distribution points.
    I am confused as where in task sequence will we specify the custom.config file.

    Edit the miguser.xml file. The default list is as follows:
    -<objectSet>
    <script>MigXmlHelper.GenerateDrivePatterns ("* [*.qdf]", "Fixed")</script>
