How to export imovie09 to an external harddrive prior to adding a new memory module?

Had to add a memory module to increase memory so I can run Lion, but can't back-up all imovies to external hard drive as required. What to do?

You can import the photos into iPhoto by using the iPhoto File menu "Import to Library."
The default location for the iPhoto Library is username/Pictures/iPhoto Library
You should only work with the library using iPhoto (i.e., don't attempt to open the library and work with the files inside directly from Finder).

  • How do I transfer images from external harddrive with Bridge settings to new computer?

I used to use Adobe Bridge on a computer that stopped working. My computer tech then made the harddrive out of that computer to an external harddrive. Now I want to transfer all those images with all the settings I have a applied to them, to my new computer. My new computer is a PC with Windows 7 and I run Adobe Creative Cloud on it.

Thanks for your answer. Where is the xmp file located?
That depends on your preference settings. By default Bridge is set to store metadata as a sidecar XMP file. This is the file that has the same filename as its original but it only uses the ".xmp" extension instead of the Raw file extension.
Bridge stores this file in the same folder as the original. If you use Bridge to move files to other location it automatically selects the xmp files to travel with it.
If you use the menu view / show hidden files you will see what Curt meant by XMP being hidden files, the all have a document icon.
If you have converted the RAW to DNG this data is written in the file itself as is the case with other filetypes like jpeg and tiff that can be handled by ACR.
You should be able to copy the whole folder to your new system or point Bridge to the old disk, select the files you want in the content panel and use the folder panel to navigate to the new location and use drag and drop
    Plenty of options

  • How do you export aperture library to external harddrive?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Im trying to save my entire Aperture library to an external harddrive. What are my options other than using Time Machine? Thanks

    Managed or Referenced Library?
    Assuming it's a Managed library:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit Aperture
    2. Copy the Aperture Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching Aperture. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
If you're using a Referenced Library then you'll need to relocate the Masters first.

  • How do I restore files from External Harddrive - Disk warrior cannot rebuild

    Hi Guys
I have a External Hard drive that I can see via Disk Ulitity and shows in finder - but I cannot see the actual files and directories, hence not being able to copy them to a new external hard drive
When I connect the External Harddrive to my Macbook I'm getting the message
"OS X can't repair the disk "Untitled"
You can still open or copy files on the disk, but you can’t save changes to files on the disk. Back up the disk and reformat it as soon as you can."
Disk Utility says I have free space so it is recognising the files.   I have Time Machine backups on this external harddrive "Untitled" that I need to critical use.
Basically how do I get the files off this external harddrive before it fully stops working? I have tried rebuilding the disk with Disk Warrior but this does not work.
Thank you anyone! I hope someone can help!

Well, I would skip the Firewire since it isn't essential. Connect the backup drive to your new Retina when it arrives, but before you turn it on for the first time. When you then turn it on you will begin in the Setup Assistant where you will have an opportunity to restore your files from a backup drive or another computer. Select the appropriate option. You can then restore (migrate) your Home folder, third-party applications and support files, and system preferences. Once that is completed when the computer restarts you will be all set up in your old Home folder.
Note that you will be transferring files over a USB connection. Depending upon how much data you are transferring this may take a very long time, so be patient. A USB drive's typical transfer rate is about 12 GBs/hour.

  • How to remove partitions from an external harddrive?

I have a 250 gb external harddrive (Lacie) on which i made a few partitions. i would like to remove them, but i can't figure out how. Any tips?

    MacBook Mac OS X (10.4.9)

One way to so it would be to do a complete backup and then just reformat the drive and make all new partitions. There is a way to do it using the terminal that does not require a reformat but I don't know how to do that. You can purchase a third party program like iPartition that will do it on the fly.
In any case, do a backup first just in case something goes wrong.

  • How to backup to two different external harddrives

    Hi folks,
i want to backup my Leopard Server with Time Machine to two different external FireWire HDs. Is this possible without having to switch the Volumes manually?

This is what i do now. Clone with CCC and do a Time Machine backup on another partition. Anyway do you know how to change the TM intervall? I read something about changing the com.apple.backupd-auto.plist in System/Library/LaunchDeamons but that did not change anything for me.
That's usually not a good idea. TM was designed to run hourly, and normally protects you best that way.
If the backups seem too large, there are some apps that can cause extra-large backups. See #D4 in the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum. It lists some of the common causes, and shows how to find out what's actually being backed-up each time.
If the size is reasonable, but the backups still take too long, see #D2 in the Troubleshooting Tip for possible causes of that.
But if you really want to alter the schedule, see #9 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.

  • How can I set up an external harddrive with time machine that already has data on it without losing the data?

I have an external hard drive that I use to hold photos and other files on that no longer fit on my macbook. I also use the external hard drive for back ups set up with time machine. I don't believe I ever did anything to partition it, I've just always had separate folders (Photos, Music, etc) with one being called "Back Ups" (or Backups.backupdb) that my time machine back ups would automatically go into. Recently, I made the switch from my HDD in my macbook to a new SSD of the same size. I used the back ups on the external hard drive to restore all my content, which all worked out fine. My problem now is in using my external hard drive. When I plug it in, it no longer seems to be working with time machine. Also, I was organizing some files within the external hard drive, and when I dragged one into a folder, it took a while to load. Before, it was instantaneous moving a file already on the external hard drive to another location within it. Can anyone help me in getting the external hard drive to work with my new SSD? I don't want to delete any of the folders or back ups that are already on it, since that's the only place I have some of those files. Please let me know if you need anymore details. Thanks! (sorry if this is posted in the wrong forum)

First, she has to be logged in to the same iTunes account as she used on the old computer.
Second, when she plugs the iPhone in to iTunes, right click on the phone name and select transfer purchases.
Third, enter one contact and one calendar entry into the new computer's addressbook/calendar.
After that, she should be fine.

  • How can I take backup in External HardDrive and then reinstall new OS and then restore data from External Hard Drive

I have goot some issue with my Macbook i7, I am not able to start my Macboook its keep showing the Grey screen after login.
I have done something where I have successully taken the OS backup on External Hardrive which was saying computer will start automatically. After this I founded a Fresh new computer but may be that was running on External hard drive.
I am **** confuse what should I do next?
    Anyhelp wold be great......

Delete the user account, then use the "Erase Free Space" option in the Erase tab of Disk Utility to write zeroes to the drive. Stick with the "Fastest" method (one pass of zeroes) unless you're hiding secrets from the NSA - anything more stringent is a waste of time.

  • HT1229 how to move photos to an external harddrive

I want to backup my iphoto '09 library to a Iomega eGo Portable hard Drive, Mac Edition.  How do i do this without backing up my entire computer contents.
    BJB

Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    Most Simple Back Up:
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
Slightly more complex: Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically.
Example of such apps: Chronosync - but there are many others. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store

  • HT1338 how to export files to an external hard drive connected to my macbook pro?

i am unable to export files from my mac onto an extrernal hard drive. as i check the permissions of the hard drive, it says, read only!! kindly help me with this!

You can use a blank CD or DVD instead of your friend's hard drive.
Or you may be able to copy the files over the network. Is your friend's PC in the same location as your Mac, on the same wifi network (or wired network)? Connect the hard drive to the PC, then turn on file sharing on your Mac.
    To turn on file sharing:
    Open System Preferences
    Click "Sharing"
Put a checkmark next to "File Sharing"
    Click "Options…"
Put a checkmark next to "Share files and folders using SMB (Windows)"
Put a checkmark next to your user account, enter your password
    Click "done"
Your Mac should now appear in the Windows "network", and you can use your friends laptop to browse the Mac files and copy over anything you need.

  • How do I start storing photos on a new external hard drive without adding a new aperture library?

I have used up all my storage on one of my external hard drives.  I want to start storing on another.  How do I do it so I do not have to make a new Aperture library.  I think having multiple libraries gets too confusing.
    Thanks!

Keep your Aperture library on that external drive, but relocate original image files to another drive.

  • Best external harddrive to get with my new Mac desktop (solid state and regular)

New really expensive Mac. Id like to know the best external and solid state thanks

    Run Apple Hardware Test first.
Backup / clone your hard drive before making changes.
Once cloned to new drive, and run Repair Permissions and insure it works properly, pull the original drive and keep off line for now.
Don't import G5 PPC applications, reinstall (if they have installers).
Test it works with Apple RAM before pulling.
Make changes one at a time so you know if something isn't right.
It could take awhile to really know if something needs updating, and assume your PCIe cards are Leopard + Mac Pro compatible and you have the latest drivers handy if you need to apply updates (very common with new systems and new OS like Leo).
Plug in the power cord last.
Once you know everything works, import your personal settings to your new OS.
