How to export versions, not masters

I imported 700 photos from an SD card to Aperture then selected them all and had Aperture optimize them, which it did very well. I now have 1400 files -- one master and one version for each photo. I would like to export only the optimized photos, so I can send them to the friend who traveled with me. Is there some way that I can select all the files with "version" in their name other than tediously clicking on each file name?

Susan, it sounds like you may need to change your preferences so that new versions are NOT created when you make an adjustment.
Now that is the future sorted, to select just the versions with adjustments applied *** the rule adjustments
and then select are applied, this will filter your images so that only the images with an adjustment are shown.
Alternatively you could also filter based on the text "version" this would then also give you the images you are after.
Let us know how you go

  • Export Versions not in viewer

When I export and save a new version of a vile how come I can't see it in the viewer? Do i have to reimport it or am I missing a setting?

One good workflow with Aperture is to export Versions when needed, _and get rid of them_.  The Aperture Library is your repository of your Images.  If you need another shareable file of an Image, export it anew.
This shouldn't be taken as inviolable.  I regularly create framed Image "post-cards" that I for emailing.  I create these by exporting using the BorderFX plug-in, and I put them all in a Finder folder called "Images for emailing".  (I have assigned a Finder "Folder Action" to auto-create a new message from each file that goes into this folder.)  I do leave these there.  They are relatively small files, and I regularly re-use them once or twice.  When I want to see what's in that Finder folder, I simply view it in Finder using the "Show as Icons" view.   (Note that if I didn't want the border {and watermark}, there are simpler ways to email Images.)

  • How to export and NOT include metadata or EXIF data

When I export versions, each photo has the metadata included. How do I export without any information in the photo?
Any exported photo I do and you open it in EXIF Viewer, all the camera info, exposure etc… is all there.
I export to JPG from NEF D300 files.

In the "Export Presets" you can de-select the option "Include metadata" at the top of the window. If you want to then you could create a new preset that does not include your metadata, so that you have one with and one without metadata.
When you export your files then be sure to select the correct preset.

  • How to export grayscale (not RGB) from LR3

I am processing hundreds of scanned B&W negatives and want to work on them in Lightroom. However, grayscale is not an option in 'export', so I have to export as RGB (@ 3 times the size), then open them in Photoshop, and change them back to grayscale - a crazy convoluted workflow!
Am I missing something, or is there really no way to export grayscale out of Lightroom?

I would like to find a plausible explanation as to why a color scan of a monochrome original is better than a monochrome scan. It is a thoroughly established law of physics that the information content of a fully predictable signal is zero. What I mean is that if the R, G and B channels of the monochrome are identical, then “upgrading” from a single-channel scan to a three-channel scan produces perfectly predictable results (two additional channels, identical to the first one) and NO new information. But what if the R, G and B channels of the monochrome are not identical? What is the cause and source of this difference?
Assumption 1: all sub-pixels (RGB) of the scanning head are co-located (scan precisely the same spot of the original). In this case any difference between the color channels is simply processing errors (nonlinearities, inter-channel differences in calibration), and a 3-channel scan produces no new information over a 1-channel scan.
Assumption 2: the three sub-pixels are slightly offset to each other. In this case each channel scans a slightly different set of spots from the original, and combination of the three channels might produce additional information (extra resolution, if the channels are properly combined).
Further along this line of thought: I guess assumption 2 is correct and the three sub-pixels are slightly offset to each other. Perhaps all scanners are designed to work with color originals and the conversion to monochrome in the scanner is less than optimal, and should be done in post-processing rather than in the scanner? Another line of thought: even if the original and its digital representation are monochrome, we are using three-color monitors to view monochrome images. Operating systems use technologies (eg Microsoft’s Crystal View) that use the three-color sub-pixels to antialias black-and-white text. Because humans’ visual acuity for color is much lower than the acuity for monochrome, the colored sub-pixels used for antialiasing are not normally perceived as colored blotches but rather as smoother gradations in grayscale. Along this line of thought, it might be possible that a three-color version of a monochrome image produces smoother gradations of tone than a monochrome version of the same image does, when viewed on a three-color monitor.
Just speculating, of course, in absence of solid knowledge.

  • Export versions not working

I've imported a bunch of RAWs without corresponding JPEGs and made some modifications to them. They are stored outisde of the Aperture library on an external hard drive.
When I try exporting a version, it says it has completed, but then when I look in the folder I've exported it to, nothing is there. I've tried just about every export format, and it worked ONCE when I exported it as a JPEG at 50% size but has failed consistently since. I've tried restarted the application and my computer to no avail.

I found the problem, and I'm pretty sure this is a bug. I had no version name in each of them, because when I posted them to Facebook Aperture would add something like "IMG_0755" as the description and I would rather have a blank description. So it seems it silently failed to export it.

  • Exporting Versions - not all are exported

I have tried this twice, once with it set to export 50% JPG without a watermark and once with and both times, of 187 images to export only about 100 are exported. I'm doing this to a folder on my desktop and using Aperture 2

I have found that if the "preview" isn't finished rendering, it wont export.
If I use the retouch brush too much, preview wont render and I cant export.
Finally I went through the whole aperture library to update all the previews before trying to do anything else.
Aperture 2 was hanging on 7 previews.... through elimination, I figured out which ones they were and adjusted them so that the preview could be rendered.
Note: when trying to reapply the "retouch brush" adjustments I hade made, the preview wouldn't render...
Hope this helps....again, in this case, when previews aint done, export will take forever and sometimes fail....
Oh yeah, the program has crashed trying to render 1 preview!

  • Export versions into project

For a set of photos I want to be able to change the color profile from Adobe RGB to sRGB, then upload them into MobileMe, email them to friends, etc.
I'm trying to find the most efficient way to do this. Ideally I would select the photos, then export them to a new or existing album, and change the color profile during export. After export to the album, I could do some sharpening and upload to MobileMe or web, email, etc.
I am having trouble doing this, as I cannot find out how to export versions into an album. I believe AP only allows me to export into a project / folder. With this approach, I believe I will have multiple files of the same photo, which is not my preference.
Can I export versions into an album? If not, how can I have multiple versions of the same file - one with AdobeRGB, the other with sRGB?
    Thank you.

You can't. You can only change the color space on export or by round tripping to another application and changing it there. Either method involves creating a new master of the image. AFAIK there is no way to assign a different color space within Aperture.
It's really a moot point though: images are automatically converted to sRGB when uploaded to MobilMe, and you can set the export settings (in Preferences) to anything you like when using Aperture's email function. So you don't need multiple versions (in this case masters) in your library in order to accomplish your goal.

  • Control metadata at exported versions

how to export versions with iptc annonations but without exif camera data.
it’s only possible to choose between export with or without metadata, but not to control which metadata is included in the exported version.
sometimes i prefer if clients don’t see my camera exif infos.
hope there’s a solution in aperture. sure i could contoll it afterwards with other software, but it should be possible in aperture.

Same problem here. In one project 4 out of 33 pictures were completely off the mark. The common factor seems to be that the corrupted images had been cropped, and Aperture messed up the area to crop at export time. Exporting them individually afterwards worked fine. Exporting two other projects with non-cropped images worked fine.
As this is the kind of processing I intended to use Aperture for, it is very annoying to say the least. I was about to buy the non-trial version tomorrow, but I now hesitate a lot - especially as I have not got any answer to my question in http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1402056&tstart=0 , which potentially could have achieved similar things using AppleScript.
Did anyone log a bug report for this yet?

When you go to file>export, there are options to to choose any size and or quality you want. Master files can be exported by going to File in the top left, choose Export from the drop down list, then Master. From the next drop down, select were you want them to go. Then click Export Masters, in the bottom right corner. Done.
You do the same with versions but there are a lot of options for file size etc. Allan

  • How to export all versions but not masters?

    Here's the conundrum:
I have 800 event photos in an Aperture project. I stamp adjustments to all of them. So, now I have 800 stacks, each with a master RAW image and an adjusted version. In each stack, the unadjusted master is the default pick.
If the stacks are closed and I Export Versions, I get 800 JPEGs rendered from the unadjusted masters. If I open all stacks, select all, and Export Versions, I get 1,600 JPEGs rendered from both the masters and the versions.
How in **** do I select the 800 adjusted versions for export without having to command-click on each one?
Is there no way to automatically export just the versions?
The only approach I've found is to select the versions and make them the picks in their stacks, one by one. Then I can close the stacks, select all, and Export Versions. This is painfully time-consuming. I can't even just select the versions one by one and then batch promote them to pick status. I not only have to select the versions one by one, but I also have to promote them one by one.
    Argh!
Am I missing something here? Please help.

    More trickery:
Select all the images in the project you are going to create adjusted versions of.
Press option V to make stacked versions. Don't deselect anything!
Control click one of the versions and select New from selection > Album
The new album appears and you can name it
Now you have the new versions as album picks (check mark) in the stacks
Close all the stacks with Option semicolon
The new versions are now on the top of the stacks in the new album
Adjust each image as needed (no need to open the stacks)
In the original project the stack picks are untouched
In the album they are adjusted
I think this will speed your workflow somewhat when combined with turning off the automatic versions. Generally speaking with Aperture you want to create new albums for everything you do. They are very flexible and let you go back to practically anything you have done and modify it.

  • I cannot seem to figure out how to export the pictures I have worked on. I create a collection and when I export them they go to "my pictures" as the originals --NOT the cropped and edited versions. Help!!!

How to export you pictures after they have been edited?

Are you sure you are looking at the exported photos and not the original photos, when you say you don't see the cropping and editing?
If so, then you are probably exporting with Image Format set to "Original" and you probably want to set it to JPG or TIF

  • Need advice on how to export ALL images including any changes (Versions)

I have well over 15000 RAW ORF Olympus images in Aperture with approximately 10000 of them in the database and the rest as references to the file on the file system.
    My problem is 'many' fold...
First I am frustrated with using Aperture only because it doesn't seem to perform well anymore either because I have too many files, the database is corrupted, DB IO is slow... I don't know but its not performing as it did when I started using it and I don't know what to do to fix it... so with that said here are a few options I am pursuing and the problems I am having doing so.
I am moving to Adobe Bridge and Photoshop CS4, however with most of the files in the Aperture database I need to have them exported... however the only options are Master and or Version, which is frustrating because if I choose Master I get the original RAW file less all the changes done to any versions and if I choose the version I get customized JPEG's less the RAW master file. huh! I would like if possible some other options but I can understand if they don't exist.
    1. One option would be to get all the masters (which I can do now) but only if they are in the database and not referenced.
    2. Second option only would be to get all the versions if the RAW was modified and not export a version for a selected image if it does not exist.
    3. Third, have some way to only selected actual modified version images and not every image in a folder or in the database.
    4. Export to Photoshop .psd format with layers instead of versions?
    5. Filter by files in the database and files that are referenced.
    6. ... I'm open to other suggestions.
Is there a way to move all the database files back to file referenced to shrink the Database or do I need to export everything and then re-import them as references?
The export process for so many files is killing me as its taking me days and days and I have no way to cross check to ensure all the files and versions are retained when exported - I'm not sure what I have or how to rebuild them in Aperture at a later time once exported?
I am exporting the sidecar file with every image but am not sure the value or significances of this file - can this file help when moving to Photoshop/Bridge?
BTW. Another reason I wish to move from having Aperture manage my files in its database is I have now lost a few hundred unrecoverable pictures for no known reason in aperture, once after a trap as I was processing a image, I lost all of my sisters funeral shots - so so sad.
    Help!!!

Something is very very very wrong - 15,000 images are nothing, unless you have them all in one project. I have 300,000+ with no issues in performance. Another indicator is days to export 15,000. Don't blame Aperture - you have a giant problem.
I am not going to address how to do what you want exactly because I do not have the time but here are some hints -
You can search for adjusted versions, and you can search for managed vs. referenced (file status). You may want to think about using relocate master with some clever subfolder options/selections to put all of you original masters and any external edited masters (PSD, etc) into a nice neat hierarchy for you to browse via bridge - Aperture is fantastic at reorganizing directory structures via relocate masters.
There is no way to export adustments+RAW that Photoshop can interpret. If you want the Aperture non-destructive adjustments you must export versions end of story.
Personally I would figure out why you are having such issues with Performance - there is a cause and it will probably give you issues no matter what you are using down the road.

  • How do I export versions to a memory stick

    Hi
I said that I would do a wedding for a friend, although know I wish I had not and just stuck to Landscape photography.
He is going to require the adjusted version, "i believe" so, all I want to do is export adjusted versions, possibly masters to a DVD or Memory stick but I can find nothing that actually tells you how to do this.
I hope someone can explain how to do this as I cannot afford to make a mistake.
    Thanks

Will he be able to use a memory stick formatted for  Mac, OS X Extended.
He will not be able to read a stick formatted for Mac. Use the filesystem that the stick will come preformatted with. That will usually be a file system that both mac and Windows systems can write to.
Just avoid long filenames with ethnic characters, when you are naming the files.
The memory stick will be better than a CD/DVD.
    To elaborate on Frank's answer:
    Insert the USB stick:
Select the images you want to export in the Browser .
Use File > Export > Versions
Select your USB stick in the file chooser.
For the highest quality use "Jpeg > Original size" (or" tiff > Original size")
Select a naming scheme in the export dialog.
    Export.
If you want to write several USB sticks, you may want to export to a folder on your Desktop and copy this folder to each stick using the Finder.

  • How to tack and export versions.

As the title says I can't figure out a smooth way to export a serie of versions (to be burned or mailed)that exist besides the masters in a project. When I select all the images and ask for "export versions" it doesn't work like that: the masters are exported too Also, when I try to select manualy with a \ they are tacked with a 5 stars rating. I don't understand that either. Could somebody help me out?

There isn't one built in, but copy the following into Script Editor. In Aperture, open all the Stacks and select the last image. Then run the script.
    tell application "Aperture" to activate
    tell application "System Events"
    if UI elements enabled then
    tell process "Aperture"
    repeat 10 times
    keystroke "\" using command down
    delay 2
    key code 123
    delay 1
    end repeat
    end tell
    else
    tell application "System Preferences"
    activate
set current pane to pane "com.apple.preference.universalaccess"
display dialog "UI element scripting is not enabled. Check \"Enable access for assistive devices\""
    end tell
    end if

I had to erase my data to upgrade my iPhone software from an older version. I backed up first, but seem to have lost all my notes.   Does anyone know how retrieve my old notes?

Is this the note you are referring to:
Not sure if this can help you.
I checked my notes. They are stored here:
    MacintosHD/Users/MYHOME/Library/Containers/com.apple.notes/Data/Library/CoreData /ExternalRecords/
    xxxxxserie.of.numbers.probably.yours.are.different/IMAPNote/_records/0/
If I go tot this window on finder and enter Time Machine I can go back and find old notes...
If so, am I doing this on my new hard drive on on the time machine? When I do this on the time machine, what is "my home"? Also, I am unable to find "containers".
If I go to users/jeff/library, then I see components, compositions, contextual, etc, but not containers.
    Thanks
