How to extend new TC - 802.11n with AEBSn's  and 802.11b/g with AEBS's

Regrets if this has already been answered, but I cannot seem to find it.
Just purchase a new 1TB TC - have set it up OK and it seems to be running fine. I am trying to extend both networks, n and b/g, with different devices - newer AEBSn's and regular older AEBS's.
I can see from the instructions the AEBSn's are set up with "Extending the network", but how are the b/g AEBS's set up?
In my old pre-TC set up, I had dual band networks set up using an AEBSn, and the AEBS's were set up to extend the b/g network using WDS. I cannot figure out how to set them up with this new dual band Time Capsule.
And BTW, I laso have old b/g AEX's set up to stream music, and have set them up as "Join a wireless network" - I think this is correct.
TIA.

I may need to be offline for awhile, so I will go ahead and post the "how to" for the 4 AEBS devices that will be configured to "extend a wireless network".
Each “n” AEBS will be setup exactly the same, except that you will probably want to give each AEBS a separate name and/or number to keep things straight.
Rather than using wireless to configure the devices, I find that it will usually help to temporarily connect an ethernet cable from your computer to one of the LAN <-> ports on the AEBS to help with the configuration with AirPort Utility. You can disconnect the ethernet cable when you have the AEBS configured and updated.
I suggest that you configure each device and then place it in a temporary position to test to make sure it is "extending" and working correctly. If you turn off the wireless on your computer and plug your computer into one of the ethernet ports on the AEBS and get an internet connection, then you know that it’s “extending” and working correctly.
Or, if you have wireless active on your computer, you can also hold down the "option" key on your computer and click on the AirPort icon at the top of the screen. You will see the AirPort ID of the device that the computer is connected to, which should be the AEBS you are testing if the computer is close to the device.
Configure all 4 “n” AEBS devices and test them, then you can locate them where they are needed. Try to use the hub and wheel model as much as possible for best results. Unfortunately, the "extend" setup may not work well if you have the Time Capsule at one end of the house rather than a reasonably central location.
AirPort Utility > Manual Setup
Click the Base Station tab to name the device, etc
Click the Wireless tab
Wireless Mode = Extend a wireless network
Wireless Network Name=The name of the Time Capsule network should appear as a choice to extend
Put a check mark next to Allow wireless clients
Wireless Security = Exact setting as the Time Capsule
Wireless Password = Exact setting as the Time Capsule
Update to save changes
I think that you can probably get the 3 AirPort Express devices configured to “join” the Time Capsule wireless network, so that should take care of AirTunes streaming on those devices.
The older AirPort Base Stations and AirPort Extreme(s) will need to connect using ethernet if you want to use them since they cannot be configured to “extend” a wireless network like the “n” AEBS devices.

  • Airport Drives Me CRAZY! New 802.11n Network Slower Than Old 802.11g/b

I've been using Macs since 1988 and consider myself an advanced user. However, every time I setup a new Airport wireless network or re-configure an existing one, I feel like a helpless newbie trying to figure out how to open a folder on my desktop. No matter how many times I read the manual or the help files or these forums, I can never grasp what seems like it should be a simple path from A to B to C.
Anyway, here's my current situation: I've been successfully (I think) running a 6 year old AP Extreme Base Station [AE] (in my home office addition) and 2 Airport Expresses [AX] (one AX roughly 15 feet from the base station--through sheetrock, and the second AX roughly 30 feet from the first AX--through sheetrock and some wooden stairs. (so roughly 45 feet from AE to 2nd AX). It wasn't the speediest thing going but it did the trick with older Macs.
I recently bought a MacBook Pro which supports 802.11n. I most often use this laptop at the point in the house furthest away from the AE (Base Station) The AE (Base Station) is in my home office connected to my MacPro desktop (see #1 below). In addition, the family iMac is also in that room furthest from the AE. Using the new MacBook Pro with the old 802.11/g/b network turned out to be painfully slow. I was experiencing the same slow network connection my family has complained about for years with their older Macs and 802.11g/b.
I decided it was time to upgrade the whole network, if only to speed up my MacBook Pro connection. Bought new 802.11n Airport Extreme (MC340LL/A) and 2 new 802.11n Airport Expresses (MB321LL/A). Setup did not go smoothly. Again, my normally competent Mac persona was reduced to a babbling three-year-old. Had three different Apple techs on the phone trying to help me through it. Got different, contradictory instructions from the last two. Finally got all three units working, only to find that not only does my MacBook Pro seem even more sluggish than when connected to the old 802.11g/b network, but my wife tells me web pages are taking at least twice as long to load as with the old network.
As concisely as I can lay this out:
    *1. Airport Extreme (Base Station)*
Connected via Ethernet from its WAN port to my Comcast cable modem. One Ethernet (LAN) port on that AE is then connected via Ethernet to my Netgear 8-port Ethernet switch. Ethernet from switch to Ethernet port 1 on my MacPro. (MacPro does NOT have an Airport card because I forgot to order one. Also I confirmed that this setup was functional by connecting to the AE wirelessly with my MacBook Pro showing the name I'd given the new network prior to adding the two AX's to the mix).
Some Airport Extreme settings of note (all accessed via "Manual Setup" button):

    SETUP/GOALS:
With Airport Extreme (Base Station) as the starting point, have the two Airport Express units with the strongest, fastest signal possible, provide Internet access (and file sharing, iTunes speakers capability) to three Macs (one older iMac, one older PowerBook and my new MacBookPro). Again, I believe my new MacBook Pro is the only one with 802.11n support, so I don't expect the other Macs to take advantage of the speed boost offered by the three new 802.11n devices.
+Any and all help with this will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!+

    {quote}With the AirPort Extreme, in the AirPort panel, Wireless tab, click on the button for "Wireless Network Options", check the box for "5 GHz Network Name", and enter a different network name. (That can be trivially different, such as the name of the main network suffixed with an underscore and the digit 5.) Once configured that way, connect your "N" gear to each network in turn to see if one is any better than the other. (If you're wondering what effect this would have, it allows segregating your "N" gear from the older gear to prevent the older gear from slowing down your network. However, distance and interference from things like walls may negate any advantage.){quote}
William: I was gone most of yesterday, but had a chance to implement your recommendations today. I added the 5 GHz network as you suggested, but in order to connect to that at all with my 802.n11 MacBokk Pro, I need to be within a few feet of the AE (base station). If I try to access that network even from the next room (well within reach of both the AE and the livingroom AX, I get one bar and "failure to connect" messages just trying to logon to that network.
However, I did some experimenting that (as of right now, anyway) resulted in much faster network access, not only from my MacBook, but also from the older iMac which is the furthest Mac from the AE. According to my wife, that iMac is "loading web pages faster than I've ever seen them!"
    Here's what I did:
    1. Moved all three units to places where it seemed they would have the least amount of interference with the clearest path from unit to unit, also raising the height of both AXs from about 2-3 feet from the floor to about 5-6 feet from the floor.
    2. Changed one setting on the AE (base station): Wireless Tab > Wireless Network Options > Multicast Rate ---> Changed this from Low to High.
I have a feeling the location shifts made the real difference, but I will try changing the multicast rate back to "Low" just to see what happens.

  • HT2822 What is the better Connection on Apple TV v2, Ethernet or Wifi 802.11n???? does not support with ethernet gigabit?

What is the better Connection on Apple TV v2, Ethernet or Wifi 802.11n????
Does not support with ethernet gigabit?

If you have stable wifi with good connectivity it should work fine - in reality many people struggle with wifi.
I was plagued by interference issues with wifi whenever the microwave was used and would always use ethernet now as my first preference for stability.
As the house is not wired for ethernet several years ago I tried mains powerline network adapters that are made by many companies.
I use these from Devolo currently:
    http://www.devolo.co.uk/consumer/81_dlan-500-avmini_starter-kit_product-pictures _8.html?l=en
They are excellent and you can create a wired network in minutes without running long lengths of cable.
As with wifi they never achieve the highest rated speeds and are dependent on the wiring quality but are more than adequate for HD streaming to multiple AppleTVs.
Many other manufacturers produce these eg Belkin, Netgear etc as well as lesser known brands.

  • Complex problem: 802.11n, Bluetooth, Iphone 4 and Magic pheripherals...

    Hi folks,
    My hardware:
    - Macbook Pro with Apple LED Cinema Display
    - Magic Mouse, Trackpad and Wireless Keyboard
    - Time Capsule as WiFi Router
    - Apple TV
    - Iphone 4
    - Airport Express as WiFi printer connection
    My problem:
    - As known, time machine backup causes lags on BT devices when WiFi is run in 802.11n (b/g compatible) and switching to 802.11n only (5GHz) solves the problem. I solved the problem with my WiFi printer (Samsung 4500W, 802.11b/g) by connecting it to my Airport Express.
    - The persisting problem is that my Iphone 4 only supports 802.11n (2,4GHz) and this frequency seems to still interfere with BT so at this point I have to live with the following: Using my Iphone as a remote in my Apple-powered network with lags on BT peripherals OR using BT peripherals in a 802.11n (5GHz) environment without using my Iphone 4 in the WiFi.
Does anyone know a solution to this?
And if the guys from Apple read this:
    - Please update my Iphone to 802.11n (5GHz)
    - Please remove the f...... mouse acceleration in Lion ;-)

When connected to the wi-fi network, on your iPhone go to Settings > Wi-Fi. Select the right facing arrow in a blue circle icon to view the wi-fi network settings. Select Forget this Network at the top.
Follow this by rejoining the network.
If no change after this, on your iPhone go to Settings > General > Reset and select Reset Network Settings. This will erase all wi-fi network settings for all wi-fi networks you have connected your iPhone with and will require re-joining every wi-fi network you have access to including your own.

How will the new OSX Mavericks affect applications already installed and using Mountain Lion?

If you're asking about compatibility, that would be something you would need to ask of the app developers, though most apps compatible with Mountain Lion should be compatible with Mavericks. You can also consult the tables here:
    http://roaringapps.com/apps
though that information comes from user reports and so should not be considered authoritative.
If you're asking whether installing Mavericks will delete your apps, no, it won't, though a good backup is always highly recommended.

    Lindsay,
Your iBookG4 is still a pretty awesome Mac. Like already said, it has the power to run Leopard, but it depends if you have an internal DVD drive.
Then I suppose you have to add up the cost of the OS, perhaps another 512MB RAM, iLife 08 and replacements for any favourite apps that you currently use (Leopard breaks a lot of stuff, but Intel breaks even more). Compare it to the cost of a new MacBook, which wil have all of that included and be 3-4x faster too.
It also depends on what you want to achieve with your iBook. My PMG4 still cuts it today, I still use it in preference to my new Mac Pro, It's about the same age as your iBook, and I'll only stop using it when it becomes "painfully" slow. My 1 year old son currently uses the Mac Pro (parts for a Mac Pro are easier to replace than those for a PMG4).
I think your choice is simple, if you can a cheap copy of Tiger, use that, it'll get your iPod Touch up and running. It came in DVD and 4 CD version (by request).
Leopard will work for you too but a lot of the best eye-candy requires quite a meaty graphics card and you may need a RAM upgrade and replacement software - OS9 Classic is not supported in Leopard.

    You can install Perian,
    http://www.perian.org/
although this will be the last version, and Flip4Mac.
    http://download.cnet.com/Flip4Mac-WMV-Player/3000-13632_4-87679.html
Otherwise you may have to look at a different and more extensive player such as VLC

    or MPEGStremclip

What are the security settings to lock down a form with fillable fields and yet allow someone with Reader to fill in the fields as will as save the form and print it?

You want to allow someone to open your document and fill out the form (in the fields you have created), but not change or edit the form, right? Here's the answer - assuming you are using Acrobat Pro and someone will be opening the PDF using at least Acrobat Reader 9 and up:
Tools > Protection > Encrypt < Encrypt with Password
Answer YES to change the security.
    A new window opens:
Do NOT select Document Open (or that will require a password to open the document.)
Select: Permissions (Check the box next to "Restrict editing and printing of the document.")
Change the following 2 settings from the drop-down box:
              Printing Allowed: Select High Resolution
Changes Allowed: Select Commenting, filling in form fields, and signing signature fields
Leave selected: "Enable text access for screen reader devices for the visually impaired"
Change Permissions Password (insert a strong password)
Leave all other settings alone in "Options"
              OK - OK
Re-enter the Permissions Password (the one you entered above)
              OK - OK
Save the PDF to apply the security [notice that (SECURED0 will appear after the document title]

Just activated BlueAnt S4 with my iPhone4 and having an issue with the Phone Commands - as I have multiple numbers for people (ie: iPhone, Work, Home), is it the BlueAnt that is having the issues or the iPhone? Tried to eliminate info on my partner's contact in with only 2 contact numbers (iPhone, Home) and one or the other is totally screwing up. Seems, from BlueAnt website, that it would be the iPhone contacts...and the guessing begins?!! Anyone else have similar issues when BlueAnt S4 was paired and giving 'Phone Commands'?? Any suggestions would be beneficial as I've spent way too much time on the web looking for a good fix/answer. Thanks.

I'm working with Illustrator CS5 and am having trouble with basic graphics textures. The illustrator drawings look fine with the pattern fills and when I bring the drawing into quark 9.1 they are still fine. When I print the quark file to lo res pdf drawing is still fine, but when I print to hi res pdf (press quality for print) the patterns disappear. I cannot figure out what the problem is.
just a note. Other textures and artistic fills work fine. It seems to be just the basic ones. I'm wondering if for some reason they may not be saved completely in my libraries?

Its just a drawing in black and white with some basic graphic texture to show “dirt”  The pattern consists of a bunch of small lines. I save the file as an eps. And bring it into quark.  When I print from quark I say print to pdf as press quality. I don’t think the problem has to do with acrobat because I’ve never encountered these problems before CS5. These drawings have been around for years and all of a sudden they don’t work.
