How to extending the range of an existing airport express network?

I have a Dell PC (Dimension 8100) and a Dell laptop (model Latitude D620). Both use Windows XP.
I use Airport Express for wireless network - it has worked very well for the past 2 years.
I purchased another Airport Express in order to extending the range. I have tried setting it up following the instructions but have failed.
Can someone please help me understand where I could be making an error? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Wireless Distribution System (WDS) Setup
(Note: To facilitate setting up the base stations, place them in near proximity of each other during the set up phase.)
Set up the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) as the WDS Main Base Station, by either connecting to the AX's wireless network or by temporarily connecting directly, using an Ethernet cable, to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then use the AirPort Admin Utility to make the following settings.
WDS Tab
- Enable this base station as a WDS: main base station (checked)
- Allow wireless clients on this base station (checked)
- Click "+" to add Remote/Relay Base Stations.
-- Select the Base Station that you want to be the WDS Remote/Relay.
-- AirPort ID: <verify that this is the correct MAC address for the Base Station you are adding as a Remote/Relay.
-- Auto configure as a WDS remote base station (checked)
-- Click "OK."
- Verify that the Remote/Relay Base Station has been added to the list.
- Click "Update," and then verify the settings for the Remote/Relay.
-- Allow wireless clients on this base station (checked)
-- New network name: <verify that this is the same as the network name for the AX>
-- TCP/IP: Configure using DHCP
-- Base Station Password: <the Remote/Relay Base Station password>
-- Confirm: <same as previous step>
-- Click "OK."

How to extend the range with a second Airport Express? Do I need a DSL cable?

Thanks, now we need a bit more information, please, in order to provide you with the correct information that you need.
I assume that you already have one AirPort Express.....either a model A1264 or A1392.....set up and operating OK, is that correct?
If yes, you can extend the network either by using wireless or an Ethernet cable with a second AirPort Express.....either the A1264 or A1392 model. A wired connection is the way to go, if possible, since it provides better performance.  But, wireless might work OK for you if you want to try that.
Let us know "how" you want to extend......wireless or wired?

  • Can an Airport Express be used to extend the range of an existing Airport  Extreme?

I would like to extend the range of my existing Airport Extreme.   If I connect an Airport express to my existing network will it rebroadcast the WiFi signal and therefore exrtend the overall range?

If I connect an Airport express to my existing network will it rebroadcast the WiFi signal and therefore exrtend the overall range?
The AirPort Express 802.11n can do this if it is located where it can receive a strong signal from the AirPort Extreme in order to "extend" it.

  • How do I extend the range of my existing Belkin WiFi network with an Airport Express Gen 2?

It is my understanding that the second generation of the Airport Express can be used to extend an existing non-Apple WiFi network.  From all I read, it was very difficult to do with the Gen 1 Airport Express, but I don't find anyone referencing the Gen 2.  My router is a Belkin Share F7D3302 V1 (updated to current firmware as of yesterday).  I am able to attach to the Belkin network and stream music to my home theater, but would also like to extend my WiFi.  Any help is appreciated.

It is my understanding that the second generation of the Airport Express can be used to extend an existing non-Apple WiFi network.
Not sure where this information has come from....and it would be extremely surprising if this were true. Do you have a link to an official announcement from Apple that would confirm this?
As far as we know, Apple's "extend" setting remains a proprietary feature that is designed to work only with other Apple routers. The "new" Express appears to carry on that tradition.
As such, it would be very unlikely that any of the Apple routers would be compatible with a Belkin product....or any other manufacturer's product for that matter.....if you are thinking of extending using wireless only.
If you figure out how to do this.....it will be a breakthrough of major proportions. Please let us know if you are successful.

  • How to use the airport express to extend the range of an existing airport extreme wireless network?

The instruction manual says nothing on the topic, so maybe it is not possible. The only reason I think it is possible is that two different Apple reps told my girlfriend it was possible. Now we have one, and no clue how to proceed.
We have an Airport Extreme, but its range is maximum 30 feet. We would like to double that. What do we do with the Airport Express? (We cannot move the modem nor the Airport Extreme. What we are trying to do has nothing to do with speakers, iTunes, or printers.)
    thanks
    Paul

Are both the Extreme and Express 802.11n models? If so, check out this AirPort Support article; if one or both are 802.11g models, check out this article instead.

  • Can I use an old Airport Express to extend the range of a new Airport Express?

Hi all.  I have an old Airport Express 802.11g (First Gen?) that is starting to fade.  Still works, but not what it used to be.  So I am going to buy a new Airport Express.  I'm not interested in the Airport Extreme.
Question:  If I use the new Airport Express as my main wireless router, can I plug my old Airport Express into another room as an extender?  In other words, with the old Express and the new Express talk to each other or will a new Express only allow extension with another new Express?
    Thanks!

Sorry, but the old AirPort Express 802.11 b/g does not have a setting to "Extend a wireless network", so it cannot be used as a extender with the newer AirPort Express if you plan to connect wirelessly.
If you plan to connect the older Express using a permanent wired Ethernet cable connection, then it could be configured to provide additional wireless signal coverage in that manner.

  • How to extend the range of my Airport Extreme network by adding an Airport Express

How to extend the range of my Airport Extreme network by adding an Airport Express?

You have to make sure that the AirPort Express is in Factory Default Settings. If it is straight out of the box, it is ready to be configured.
The instructions that I will provide are for using AirPort Utility 6.0, which you have.
Locate the Express in the same room as the AirPort Extreme for the configuration. Power it up and allow a full minute for the Express to display a blinking amber light.
Make sure that the wireless is turned on your Mac
Open AirPort Utility 6.0 and look at the small rectangle in the upper left hand corner of the display. It should now read something like "Other AirPort Base Stations (1)"
Click on the rectangle, and then click on the AirPort Express xxxxxx listing
AirPort Utility will take a minute or two to analyze the settings on your network and then suggest that  the Express be configured to "Extend" your wireless network.
Edit the Base Station name to your liking, then click Next in the lower right hand corner
Allow a full minute or two let AirPort Utility do its work
When you see Setup Complete, click Done at the lower right of the window.
Now move the AirPort Express to a location that is approximately half way between the AirPort Extreme and the area that needs more wireless coverage.
    You should be in business.

how can i extend the range a little
The normal approach would be to purchase a secondary WiFi device (Apple or third-party) to create a WDS (Wireless Distribution System) that extends/relays/repeats the range/signals of your primary device. (I.e., you create one or more remote access points nearer/within range of the location at which you wish to use the target device.)
    ADDED: Oops—a bit slow typing...

  • How to extend the range from extreme to express

I have just bought a airport express and airport extreme. I have been reading the instructions but I cant seem to find the answer on how to extend my wi-fi connection from my extreme through my express. I hope you understand my question.

Apple's step by step support document for this is here:

Although the items pictured are two AirPort Extremes, the setup instructions would be exactly the same for an AirPort Extreme and an AirPort Express

  • Extending the range of my Time Capsule N Network

Not sure whether I should post this here or on the TC forum but...my TC is set to provide a wireless N only network at 5ghz but the range is not long enough to reach all parts of my house.
A google search didn't seem to show any range extenders for wireless N networks.
Does anyone know if I can use either an airport extreme base station or an airport express base station as a range extender?
I know I can use either as an access point but that means that data will only get to the base station at max 200mbps (I have a powerline network with a max speed of 200mbps) whereas I know my macbook is connecting to the TC at 270mbps which is why I'd really like to achieve this with a range extender.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Anthony

Does anyone know if I can use either an airport extreme base station or an airport express base station as a range extender?
Yes, you can use either the 802.11n AirPort Extreme or AirPort Express base stations to wirelessly extend your Time Capsule's wireless network.

  • How to extend Virgin Superhub broadband using Apple Airport Express

I need to extend my Virgin Superhub broadband (Which is downstairs) using Airport Express as my playstation looses connection (upstairs) when I'm online (especially when playing Fifa!) any ideas on how to do this as I keep getting a message saying it was unable to extend? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks Guys
    Jazz

If you are trying to configure the Express to "extend" using wireless only, unfortunately that feature is reserved for use with other Apple routers.  It would be extremely unlikley that it would work with a product from another manfacturer.
To have the Expesss provide more wireless coverage, you will need to connect it to the Superhub using a wired ethernet connection and configure it to extend that way.

  • Adding new airport extreme to an existing airport express network...

i currently have a home airport network comprising two airport express units; one attached to the cable modem in the bedroom and the other downstairs in my study (extending the existing network and feeding a shared USB printer and airtunes speakers). i've recently bought an airport extreme, to improve network performance. i also plan to add a NAS in the next week or so.
ideally i'd like to situate the new airport extreme in the study, as i don't want to have to keep the NAS in my bedroom!
my question is this, if i add the new airport extreme to the existing airport network, will i see the benefit of the 802.11n connection, or should the extreme be set up as the primary base station?

... will i see slower transfer speeds (than if it was connected to the extreme) to / from the NAS when accessing it wirelessly from elsewhere in the house?
No. The transfer speed will be limited by the slowest connection, which is almost certainly your wireless connection speed.
If you buy a switch, buy a gigabit switch. Not because a slower one will limit your transfer speed, but because the Extreme is Gigabit and any newer equipment is likely to be as well. The advantage would only be relevant to the wired LAN.
The Express's Ethernet is not Gigabit but there is no reason for it to be, since it cannot connect to anything other than a slower wireless connection anyway.

  • TC with existing Airport Express network?

I have a home network using 3 AE (WEP encryption) , 1 main, 1 wds and 1 airtunes. Could I add a TC to this existing network and use it as TM for my Macbook?
    Thanks

If the AirPort scan indicates a seperate network, then the printers wireless has created it`s own network, in stead of connecting to the existing one.
You said you installed drivers and support-software. According to the networking manual on
    http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/BSC/public/files/dlf/doc002029/527080_NUG_ENVer0.pdf
a program called 'BRAdmin Light' would have been installed together with the drivers. This program should be used to monitor the status of the printer and to edit the networking settings.
The specific manual`s third chapter specifically mentions your printer and setting it up for wireless. Or you could check the Quick Start Guide, it should also have the necessary info.
