How to fade a title in and out?

I understand what your saying.
First of all, what your doing a called a video effect not a transition. A transition is applied between two clips. The only "Swirl" in PP is a transition.
What you are refering to is the alpha key and, in a product like Boris Red, you must set the alpha key "on" in order to make the black "alpha" area transparent.
You must be using some third party plugin or are importing an image where you think the black area is an alpha channel but is not? Because i've only had problems with the black area (alpha channel) when using third party plugins like Boris FX or RED. With Boris, the alpha channel only works with effects not transitions. So if you have a scaled Boris transition between two clips or images overlayed above some background in PP, the background will not show through. If you've imported an image into PP with black areas that you want to be transparent, then you have to apply a key to remove the black or use an image format like ".PNG" - it includes the alpha channel.
If you have a PP titler page or clip and are using just PP effects and transitions, there should be no alpha channel problem no matter how you scale or manipulate the object, even if they are all in the same sequence and on top of each other. The only time you will encounter this problem is when you import a clip or image with black areas, as opposed to an alpha channel, that you want to make transparent.
So... If this a problem using third party effects plugins then i offer my apologise since they don't always function properly with respect to alpha channels. Otherwise, for an experienced editor, you need to read up on alpha channels and keying. :)

You can't. You can't export part of a sequence. Duplicate it and remove the bits you don't want to export from the duplicate.

Thanks. I assumed I needed to set in and out points. I have not done an image sequence in FCP. If I have a 10 second image and a 2 second transition, but then change the duration of the transition to say 4 seconds then FCP will let me alter the transition duration?
With regards to movie clips, what happens with setting global in and out points? How would I do that?

How to manage bom effective in and out dates

The parent-child relationships in my BOMs have effective in and out dates. The in date is when the child part starts to participate in the BOM cascade. Then out date is when it stops participating.
My questions is, how to express this in IOP speak. Specifically, when I want to say is,
dependent demand = dependent demand + <total demand from parent> * if (today is in [BOM.in_date .. BOM.out_date], BOM.usage, 0)
I'm sure it can be done, just haven't been able to figure out how. I poked around the function reference in jdocs, but haven't come up with a way to do this. Seems like the key here is to construct locations out of the dates I pull out of the rowsource. Once I have that, I should be able to use the in() and range() functions.

Yes, this is fundamental and supported well. Unfortunately, it used to be custom code before the release coming out soon. In this release, we have introduced generic functions to achieve that. The in_date and out_date are function of the relationship I assume.
Here is what you could do with the new release -- remember this should be coded in the rolldown/rollup formula --

Lookup in general is a cool function that lets you do arbitrary query to rowsource. It is like table lookup and it is efficient within a block calculation.

Any suggestions on how to truly learn the ins and outs of my devices?

I have a MacBook Pro, and iPhone 4, and a iPad 3. I love them all, but feel that I totally under utilizing them! What would you recomend as helps to learn more about how to fully utilize the devices? A quick example: I didn't know how to repair the disk drive, and still do not really know what that means! Thanks in advance!

How do I crop my in and out points.

I have marked my in and out points. I don't know the correct term to use since it varies between applications, but I want to delete the excess clip that is not in my in and out points.
Can someone help?

Final Cut Pro is a non-destructive editor, i.e. the original media is left unaltered.
In order to delete the material you're SURE you will no longer use, you can use Media Manager to build a new project with/without handles that contains copies of only the media you are using.
Like this:
This shows 1 second handles.
You can also export a self contained movie of your sequence if you've completed editing.
In either case, you'd then delete your original media.

How to fade in titles

I can successfully use Final Cut Express to make my title zoom in letter by letter while doing loop-de-loops and pulsating ... but how do I simply do a fade in/fade out of the entire title?

Of course, do'h! Actually, I meant to post this in Live Type, which I'm using for the titles, and I'll do that now in case there is another way to do it there.

I'm new to Final Cut Pro X previously I have used Final Cut Express. Making the scrolling text fade out at the top of the page as it scrolls is easy in Final Cut Express. I've spent over 1 hr & cannot find how to make the scrolling text fade out in Final Cut Pro X, has anyone any ideas?.

Simple question, how to get photos fading in and out

Sorry, don't use Flash much at all, I'm trying to do something that's probably very simple. This question has probably been answered before but I'm not even really sure what keywords to search for, I tried slideshow and a glut of irrelevant info came up.
I want to create a swf of 5 photos that fade into each other. For example, black background, first photo fades up from alpha 0 to alpha 100 in one second, stays on screen for 4 seconds, then fades back to alpha 0 while the next photo fades up, etc, then the 5th photo fades back into the 1st photo and it loops.
What's the best, easiest way to accomplish this with cs4?
Also, if the jpgs are 980 x650 pixels and approx. 70 kb apiece, will I need a preloader if I'm going to use the swf as a header to my site? If so, is there a simple, plug n play preloader I can use?

How do I put titles, keywords and meta tags in my website?

I use iWeb 3 and godaddy. I can't get google or any search engine to see me even if I explicitly search for my organizations name. What am I doing wrong. If you go to godaddy, they give you keywords to use and then tell you to go to your website editor and add them and of course I can't. Please help. Thanks.

In Windows if we hide the menu bar Firefox puts in a single line Firefox button, tabs and minimize, maximize and close buttons. But in Gnome it keeps the separated title bar (with the minimize, maximize and close buttons).

I want to back up what was said here. Chrome and Chromium have done this for as long as I can remember and the Linux distribution is entirely irrelevant in this case (as in most cases). There is an option to use the "system title bar and borders" in Chrome. If applied Chrome will have that blocky, chunky effect of not having the tabs overlapping into the title bar that firefox has. By default chrome does not use the system-provided title bar and borders. They wrote their own. The result is it looks nice. I prefer firefox by miles over Chrome, but have to admit it is chunky and ugly around the edges by comparison.
The problem is not that it is "not possible in Linux." As a dedicated Linux user, hearing that oft-repeated phrase gets really old. There is nothing about Linux that makes things not possible when it comes to coding features. What is going on is the shortcuts available to make the coding quick and easy may not already exist. Fewer people use Linux, fewer people develop for Linux, and there is often less existing code base already written for Linux to make a coding job quick and easy. Also, there is less incentive to write original code to make something work for Linux because we are relatively few; the countless minions using Windows are all complaining about other things and much more loudly so.
There is no doubt the task could be accomplished--which I would love to see--but the developers have to prioritize. I get that. Just wish they'd be honest rather than use the lazy answer of "It can't be done on your system."

Ann's Cross-dissolve will probably be exactly what you want, and is very simple too. If you want more control, you can also Keyframe the fixed Effect>Opacity to suit. Also, other Effects (say Gaussian Blur), can also be added. More work, with more potential and control.
Still think that Ann has nailed it.

How to fade music???

I want to piece a movie together: Intro with music, Scene 1, Exit with Music. How can I fade the music in and out so it isn't overpowering the speech in Scene 1?
I'm using iMovie HD

With HD, it is easy: Go to "View" and select "Show Clip Volume" and you will see the volume line in each clip. Place your cursor on the line of the clip whose volume you want to change, and you can lower the volume to whatever level works with the clip when someone is speaking, and you can raise it again when there is no talking.
