How to find files that either shouldn't be there or are eating up memory

Hi,
I download a lot. (I have 12 TB external and I've used it all -- several times.) I'm afraid that at some point I must have downloaded something I shouldn't have, as my computer has gotten slower and slower over the year. Is there a way to find out what has been added to my OS/computer that wasn't in the orignial instal?
Also, is there an easy to follow tutorial that explains the the data generated in the Activity Monitor? (The CPU might show 94% idle, the System Memory 12 of 16 GB free, and Disk Activity, Disk Usage, and Network all at the very low end of the usage bar, but it still takes a bit of time to process my requests.) I'd like to better learn how to trouble shoot on my own.
Thank you much,

Remove everything from your login items here:
 > System Preferences... > Users & Groups | Login Items
by selecting the entire list, and hitting the '-' minus button underneath (do not check the 'Hide' boxes).
Restart the mac and test to see if the slowness remains.
NOTE: You might want to take a screenshot of the login windows panel (use 'Command-Shift-4', move the cursor over the panel, hit the spacebar and click mouse or trackpad) before doing the above procedure so that you have a record of what was in the list.
If the problem is solved, you can start adding necessary items (those you need to run on login) one at a time. Restart the mac and test after adding each to determine which one causes the slow downs).
If removing everything from login items doesn't solve the problem, take a look at what 3rd party apps you have installed. MacKeeper? Antivirus software? LogMeIn? Something you're running is hogging resources. Check what's using up all the %CPU in Activity Monitor.app.

  • How to find files that take a lot of space?

I want to clear space on my computer. I don't have much left.. I need help!

Freeing Up Space on The Hard Drive
      1. See Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks' Storage Display.
      2. You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.
      3. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on your hard drive.
      4. Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.
      5. See Where did my Disk Space go?.
      6. See The Storage Display.
You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.
You should consider replacing the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.
Try using OmniDiskSweeper 1.8 or GrandPerspective to search your drive for large files and where they are located.

  • How to reconnect files that I can't find on my computer now?

When I got onto my computer and went to Final Cut Express, a couple of my files had apparently gone offline and whilst I know how to fix that I don't know how to reconnect files that I for some reason can't find in the same file, on my computer, that they just were in. I was able to reconnect 2 of the 3 files that were offline but the third I am having trouble with. I did not delete it (it's a sound clip) (and I know I didn't because I looked in my trash) and it's neither on my desktop or the file for this project like it normally would be and I'm wondering if Final Cut moved it or if its hidden or something. I did also search my computer and couldn't find it.
This is a project I am working on that needs to be turned in tomorrow (which was totally realistic until I decided to check on it once more) and now I think I can get an extension until Thursday, so I would GREATLY appreciate any helpful tips or advice anyone can give!
    Thanks so much!

    Hello Sarah,
FCE should not delete anything from your computer as it deals only with file paths rather than the real media files.
If this audio file is not anywhere to be found on your computer then you will have to get another one if possible.
Did you move any files using the Finder the FCE relied on?
The only time I have heard of files going missing like this is when they are bounced from FCE to Sound Track or Motion.
If you did not do this then it's a mystery???

  • Why can't the finder in Mountain Lion 10.8.2 find files that have successfully downloaded, or that other programs can find?

Why can't the finder in Mountain Lion 10.8.2 find files that have successfully downloaded, or that other programs can find?
This happens with maybe 1 out of 5 files. These are files that have either an ."aa" extention, or or are libraries that icloud can see, but finder can't.

Files beginning with a period are invisible and library files are system files. Spotlight cannot find either unless configured to do so (btw, this is not a Finder issue but a Spotlight issue.)
Get Spotlight to search system files (and more)
Enter the search term in the Finder window's search field.
Click the [+] button in the search bar to add a search option.
In the first drop down menu choose Other.
Choose “System Files” from the list that pops up (and check the box to place in drop down menu to avoid this step later,) click on the OK button.
Now back in the Finder choose Include from the second drop down menu.

  • Fails to find files that exist, fails to search everywhere

    Running OSX 10.4.3 on a Powerbook G4 1.5gHz and on a PowerMac G4/867.
I hope it is because I am doing something wrong, but so far I am very unimpressed with Spotlight, for the following reasons:
•It fails to find files that are known to exist. For example, I have an application named MacTracker. It is in my Applications folder. When I enter
    tracker
    in the search field,
(with location set as wide as "computer" or as narrow as "Applications", with or without a "name contains" restriction) Spotlight will not show MacTracker as existing, even though I can see it with my own eyes, in the Applications folder window in the background. Only if I search on
    Mactracker
will Spotlight see the application. This seems ridiculous to me. Any search, especially a "name contains" search, ought to show MacTracker if I search on track, tracker, actra, mactrac, etc. But, no. I have to enter "MacTracker" if I want it found.
•I make use of OSX Mail only occasionally. For most of my e-mail, I use a Unix mail handler known as PINE. PINE stores incoming and outgoing mail as plain text files in /users/me/mail . However, Spotlight refuses to include that location in its searches. I have tried using the Spotlight preferences to add
/mail to the list of specific places to search; no luck, Spotlight appears completely blind to anything outside of the locations Apple arbitrarily decided I needed to be able to search in.
Can anyone offer any ideas on how to make Spotlight work for me, instead of against me?
    Thanks in advance.
      Mac OS X (10.4.3)

same problem here. the only answer i can find is....spotlight buh-lows. does anyone know if we can just revert to ye olden way of searching? simple things like: searching actually find the stuff you're searching for. and: list of items found arrangeable by date/alphabetically (just like any normal window in osx). also, is hitting apple-f essentially just bringing up spotlight in its own window, or does this search function differ at all? sorry to hijack the thread, but we suffer from the same problems. thank you!

  • How to find out that particular structure is used in which tables

    Hello Friends,
Most of the times through techinal information we come to know the table name for a particular field. And in se16 when i give that table name than system says its structure and not the table. So in se11 when i give that structure name in database table field, its shows all the field in that structure, but not the data stored in that field.
So my question is how to find out that particular structure is used in which tables,so that i can view data stored in that structure?
    Thanking you guys in advance.
    Regards,
    Jitendra

    Dear,
When you click on the technical information it will give the structure name and field, double click on the structure and it will take you the display structure screen, there you will have the where-used List icon (Ctrl + Shift + F3) at the top , click on that and it will show the options, select Database tables and execute, it will give the tables related to the structure, you can explore the list of tables and find where your required field is stored in them.

Startup disc is Macintosh HD. If your HD is getting near full capacity you'll need to offload some files to an external drive or drives.

How can clients view video files that I upload to my Creative Cloud area?  Is there a special password that they have to use to gain access?
    Thanks for any guidance.
    Dave

As a video professional, i agree and am VERY disappointed with this policy.  I attended CC presentations at various conventions, film festivals and meetups for a year-and-a-half before I made the leap to CC, and no one EVER mentioned a restriction to transferring video files.
Whether it's to save storage space or not, that's how it APPEARS to the end user.  Anybody who knows ANYthing about how video pirates commit their crime (which it most-certainly is), knows that there are plenty of FREE, untraceable (or nearly-anonymous) resources to carry it out.  The need for anyone to pay $30 or more per-month to do it with an acct that has their info attached to it is ludicrous!  If anything it's CONTRIBUTING to piracy to encourage creatives to transfer their material to collaborative parties using a less-secure, more heavily-trafficked third-party service than the one they're paying for exclusive use for.
Adobe's policy makers need to review this restriction and remove it or provide ANOTHER reason why it exists because this one doesn't fly.  And if it continues, make sure a disclaimer gets inserted in CC pitch presentations because likely half of the attendees are working with video.

  • How to find files added in the last 8 hours that caused disk full

I used a program called Eagle Filer to archive about 20 Gigs of email from Entourage to a library on an external drive. Oddly, this process made my main (startup) disk full, which had about 16 Gigs available. Clearly this thing wrote a lot of data to my startup disk as well, but I can't seem to find it. It happened in the last 8 hours. What's the best way to figure out where these data are? Because they're individual emails, each file may not be enormous, although I'm guessing the parent folder must be. Simply doing a Spotlight for "files created in the last day" isn't revealing it. Maybe they're hidden somehow? How do I find it where all this junk landed?
    thanks,
    Mike

To find files in your home directory:
find ~ -newerBt '8 hours ago'
To find files on your drive that you have permission:
    find / -newerBt '8 hours ago' 2>/dev/null
    To find all files
sudo find / -newerBt '8 hours ago'
To see the file size, add "-ls"

Depends how they were transferred. If you used Migration Assistant, a new user was created. Look there in your documents folder. If you used Setup Assistant, look in your documents folder.

  • How to find out that the card in a given NIDAQ slot is a DSA card?

In the description of DAQ_Op(...) function in the traditional NIDAQ function reference one reads:
"buffer" is an integer array. "buffer" has a length equal to or greater than count.
When DAQ_Op returns with an error number equal to zero, buffer contains the acquired data.
For DSA devices, buffer should be an array of i32. These devices return the data
in a 32-bit format in which the data bits are in the most significant bits.
Question 1: How to find out programmatically that the card in a given NIDAQ slot is a DSA card?
Question 2: How many MSB carry the information? How do I find out bit-ness of the card (programmatically)?
The obvious solution to create and keep updated the table/fil
e with the data for all existing DAQ cards is unacceptable. This could be maintained by NI itself, but not by 3rd party developpers, like me.

    Bryan, thanks for your answer.
I hope that my NIDAQ-wish-list will not only reach NIDAQ developers but some of it will be implemented in the next versions of NIDAQ.
I should say that I am quite pessimistic because I was sending similar requests via German support few YEARS ago and I am still even do not know whether they reached developers or not. Even if yes, the present NIDAQ still does not have these functions and this means that NI takes 2..4 years to react on the feedback.
At the moment I have no choice, and I do maintain self-made info file (nidaq.ini). But beleive me, it is a pain in the @ss to scan help files and manuals of the DAQ cards which I've never seen just to include info in nidaq.ini. And when my customers of a brand new NIDAQ ca
rd call and wonder why the card is not reacognized by my application correctly, I tell to them that this is basically fault of NI. Because NI provides no way to get card info. I am doing my best analysing error codes, but it does not help in all cases. Sorry, guys, but you left no choice to me.
As for NIDAQmx, this is not a solution either. I am not going to rewrite my existing and working rather big application. It could be a good suggestion for those who just starts developing a new applications from the scratch, but not for those who almost finished it. Even for those who begin now, NIDAQmx may not be a good choice, because, as I saw in this forum, it does not support all cards that are supported by NIDAQ. It also looks like that instead of improoving, developing and fixing NIDAQ, NI dicided to change API completely. It is not yet clear to me whether NIDAQmx is supposed to substitute NIDAQ in the future or not. If not, I would concentrate on improoving trad. NIDAQ. If yes, it wou
ld be a disaster for many developers. :-(
Anyway, I hope that the interaction between NIDAQ team and application developpers will be improoved, and we will see some results of this feedback.
