How to find hardware configuration via serial number

I need to know the model number for the hard drive in my powerbook. The powerbook won't power on at the moment. Is there any way I can look up the serial number and find out what hardware was installed in it? It is a 100 GB drive and the computer was custom ordered.

HD: My guess is that unless you are truly expert and have a comprehensive set of specialized miniature tools at your disposal, there is almost no chance that you will succeed in what you propose to do. I suggest that before you tackle the mechanical parts inside your failed drive, you consider swapping the controller board on the outside of it. A failure of that board can render a drive just as inert as a mechanical failure inside it, without disturbing the data stored on the platters at all. A failure of the internal mechanicals, if that's what has occurred, is more likely to have irretrievably destroyed some or all of your data, so that you couldn't recover it even if you were successful in the extremely delicate task of removing the platters and placing them in a new case. If there has been no mechanical failure, replacing a failed controller board with a good one may restore all your data to accessibility without jeopardizing its integrity at all in the process. Changing the board would be a much less intrusive and far safer first step toward recovering your data than tearing down the drive's mechanicals, and it might prove to be all you need to do.

Is there a way to use software ("about this mac") or by looking on the case to see what the part number is for a Power Mac G5? I searched the Apple support site and these discussions and could find no information on locating the part number of a CPU.
This is needed because there are some issues of compatibility with an audio board and the refer to specific part numbers for different Mac CPUs. Of course, this problem comes about, because unlike most product makers, Apple doesn't label many of their products in a meaningful way - at least since the days of the Performa 650 or Mac IIsi when you could look at the case and know what model you had. Even the silly convention of referring to models as "bronze keyboard", "ATP graphics", "silver doors" or gigabit ethernet" was better than no indication at all.
So any help would be appreciated if you happen to know. Thanks.

Don't know about the part no. of the CPU, but the 'M' no. should be on the original invoice.
The serial no. will give you the build date
"The first two characters indicate the city where it was manufactured, the third number is the 200x year, and the fourth and fifth numbers combine to indicate the week of the year.
So, g8443a19qpp would be made in city "g8", year of manufacture = 2004, week of the year 2004 = 43."

That preference isn't available in Firefox 3.6.x versions, it is a new preference / feature in Firefox 4.0.

This works for any Mac provided that the logic board has not been replaced.
I recently had the logic board replaced in my iMac. After the tech left (on site repair thanks to Applecare), I went to about the Mac and found jibberish numbers. I called Apple and the AASP and found that he had forgotten to register the serial number. So he came back and, with a special tool (as he called it - looked a little like a USB stick) he contacted Apple and then entered my original serial number as I read it to him.
So, I assume they changed the process since I still have the same serial number as before.

Go to the Apple menu and select "About This Mac". You will get a window similar to this one -
You current OS X version number will be shown as I've marked.
OS X 10.4.x is Tiger, 10.5.x is Leopard, 10.6.x is Snow Leopard, 10.7.x is Lion, and 10.8.x is Mountain Lion.
Whether or not you can go to the latest OS X version depends upon your hardware -
You will need to purchase the retail set for the OS X version you want; there is no pint in getting and installing any intermediate versions. Once the retail version has been installed, you can update it to the latest release for that version via download updater.

Please advise how to enable hardware acceleration in FireFox 31. All my graphics and other hardware/software is current and updated. I've also paired my Bookmark Toolbar down to under 20 entries.
FireFox is so sluggish that just a few open tabs cause the pausing "wheel of doom" every time I try to enter information or go to another part of the website. Sometimes the pauses are 5-10 seconds, sometimes a minute or more.
I do not have this issue on the other browsers that I use.
