  • How a select statement generates redo logs

Can some one explain how a select statement generates redo logs
    Naveen

Redo with a select statement happens when dirty blocks get written to the database, and are then "cleaned up" when next read of that data block. This could happen when a large DML statement does not commit before the DB Writer needs to write modified blocks to disk. The next time the blocks are read by a select statement they get modified, hence REDO is generated by the select statement.

  • Finder crashes with OS 10.6.8. With or without any apps running finder will hang repeatedly causing the iMac to hang also. I upgraded from 10.5.8 to 10.6.8 recently and finder was OK for 1 week. How do I submit a crash log?

Folllowing an upgrade from 10.5.8 to 10.6.8  (Snow Leopard) Finder frequently hangs, causing any open apps and the iMac to hang. This will occur whether or not any 3rd party apps or Safari are open. About 50% of the time trying to empty the trash will cause a finder hang. There are no error messages to let me know what code such a hang may be. Repeated attempts to force quit the iMac always fail, so I have to hard crash using the power button. Multiple attempts are required to successfully restart via the login screen. I do not know whether any other apps, such as Safari or screen saver may be involved. I think a crash log would help, however I am not sure whether I should look in: useres/library/logs/DaiagnosticReports or : users/library/logs/CrashReporter, and whether I should attempt to open the latest in either in Console or Text edit and then post here. Also, is this the appropriate site to post a log in the hope that Apple may look at it? I have read through threads on Apple finder, and am stunned to find that after all these OS-X versions finder is still buggy and inferior to MS Explorer and Apple appears to be in denial. Maybe their efforts are in devices such as iPhones and iPads? Ths issue never occured in OS 10.5.8.

  • How to find out which archived logs needed to recover a hot backup?

    I'm using Oracle 11gR2 (11.2.0.1.0).
I have backed up a database when it is online using the following backup script through RMAN
    connect target /
    run {
    allocate channel d1 type disk;
    backup
    incremental level=0 cumulative
    filesperset 4
    format '/san/u01/app/backup/DB_%d_%T_%u_%c.rman'
    database
}The backup set contains the backup of datafiles and control file. I have copied all the backup pieces to another server where I will restore/recover the database but I don't know which archived logs are needed in order to restore/recover the database to a consistent state.
I have not deleted any archived log.
How can I find out which archived logs are needed to recover the hot backup to a consistent state? Can this be done by querying V$BACKUP_DATAFILE and V$ARCHIVED_LOG? If yes, which columns should I query?
    Thanks for any help.

    A few ways :
1a. Get the timestamps when the BACKUP ... DATABASE began and ended.
1b. Review the alert.log of the database that was backed up.
1c. From the alert.log identify the first Archivelog that was generated after the begin of the BACKUP ... DATABASE and the first Archivelog that was generated after the end of the BACKUP .. DATABASE.
1d. These (from 1c) are the minimal Archivelogs that you need to RECOVER with. You can choose to apply additional Archivelogs that were generated at the source database to contininue to "roll-forward"
2a. Do a RESTORE DATABASE alone.
2b. Query V$DATAFILE on the restored database for the lowest CHECKPOINT_CHANGE# and CHECKPOINT_TIME. Also query for the highest CHECKPOINT_CHANGE# and CHECKPOINT_TIME.
2c. Go back to the source database and query V$ARCHIVED_LOG (FIRST_CHANGE#) to identify the first Archivelog that has a higher SCN (FIRST_CHANGE#) than the lowest CHECKPOINT_CHANGE# from 2b above. Also query for the first Archivelog that has a higher SCN (FIRST_CHANGE#) than the highest CHECKPOINT_CHANGE# from 2b above.
2d. These (from 2c) are the minimal Archivelogs that you need to RECOVER with.
(why do you need to query V$ARCHIVED_LOG at the source ? If RESTORE a controlfile backup that was generated after the first Archivelog switch after the end of the BACKUP ... DATABASE, you would be able to query V$ARCHIVED_LOG at the restored database as well. That is why it is important to force an archivelog (log switch) after a BACKUP ... DATABASE and then backup the controlfile after this -- i.e. last. That way, the controlfile that you have restored to the new server has all the information needed).
    3. RESTORE DATABASE PREVIEW in RMAN if you have the archivelogs and subsequent controlfile in the backup itself !

  • Where to find Premiere CS4 Crash log?

    Hi,
I've been running Premiere CS4 on Windows XP x64 for the past several months without any problems.  A couple of days ago, I suddenly started getting a crash window whenever I would start up Premiere (during the splash screen loading).  I accidentally clicked on the "do not display again" option in the window, so the window has since disappeared and no longer shows up.
I have tried uninstalling CS4 completely, and reinstalling the entire suite, but I still have the same problem.  Furthermore, the crash report screen still doesn't display anymore.
I am starting to get quite frustrated at this point.  I am not sure where to look for a crash log and/or how to figure out / pinpoint what might be causing the error.
I am running XP x64 SP2 with all the latest patches enabled.
Other CS4 apps (ie: photoshop, encore, etc), work fine.
Can anyone help point me in the right direction?  I've tried searching the web to see if there is a way to reenable this crash report window and/or to find any pertinent log files, but can't seem to find anything.
I've already read through http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/405/kb405950.html and tried out most of the suggestions to no avail.
Any help and/or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  I have wasted hours trying to figure this out on my own but am just spinning my wheels at this point.
    Thanks!
    Eric

That is the reason we advise never installing codec packs, since it is often utter h*ll to get rid of them again, leaving the only option for the non-expert registry wizards to reinstall OS & programs. Usually a faster and better way to repair things. I don't think it is fair to blame that on Adobe, especially since you aggravated things by using an unsupported OS to start with.
Fair enough, however, everything I have read about XP64 and CS4 is that it isn't officially supported, however, should work fine.  And true to form, it does/did work fine.  Until I messed things up.
I guess it is the lack of debugging tools and the length of time that it takes to install/uninstall CS4 that is making this process so utterly painful.  If there would be better tools and/or documentation for fixing a hole that you have dug yourself into, it would make things so much better.
I love Adobe products, but they have a history of poking around in obscure places in the OS that is intentionally undocumented, for example activation information, serial information, etc.  They have only recently (in the last couple of years) started providing tools (ie: CS4clean script) to help clean up faulty/defective installs.  However, even those don't seem to work perfectly.  I already uninstalled CS4 and ran the clean script.  Yet after reinstalling, my crash window no longer gets displayed in my original profile.  Which indicates to me that there are still some setting lurking around somewhere in the system that Adobe hasn't documented.
Now I completely understand Adobe's need to do this in order to protect its IP and software and business model.  Where they fall short, however, is providing tools to help the user determine what is wrong, faulty, defective in their system in order to be able to successfully (re)install the application.
My case is a prime example.  If there was a way to enable a "safe mode" of sorts, or a logger that indicates exactly which files were being loaded/accessed, it would go a long way to help determine what gremlin is still lurking in the PC.  Without such tools, it becomes incredibly arduous guessing constantly.  Add to the fact that every "guess" that includes and installation takes 1-2 hours to complete, and the frustration levels start to increase.
That being said, I have yet-again just launched the uninstallation of CS4.  Will run the clean script again afterwards, reboot, and reinstall and keep my fingers crossed.
    Thanks,
    Eric

  • How to find redo generated per each SQL Statement?

Database version is 10.2.0.4. OS is AIX.
We have excessive redo generation during specific time of a day. We would like to identify which statement is contributing to this excessive redo.
ADDM shows this as first finding
Waits on event "log file sync" while performing COMMIT and ROLLBACK operations were consuming significant database time.
Is it possible to find out which sql statement is generating how much redo in bytes during a specific time?
    Thank You
    Sarayu

    user11181920 wrote:

For example, you will see bunch of UPDATE,DELETE,INSERT statements issued by apps. So? What you going to do with them? If you can modify the app to eliminate unnecessary DMLs - it would be great of course. But it is unlikely. From what I've seen, namely developers putting way more commits in than the business rules would justify, it is not so unlikely.
    >
Also when DML statements generate Redo, the do not cause too many waits of "log file sync", because buffer Log writer flushes buffer as soon as it fills more than 30% or after some time, or on Commit/Rollback. This may or may not be true, as there can be several reasons for log file sync: insufficient I/O (which is the only one you are addressing); CPU starvation (because the cpu ultimately controls i/o requests, and even fixing some unrelated sql that hogs the cpu could change this); lgwr priority (on some systems it makes sense to simply raise the priority, it can vary widely as to whether this makes sense); and other things like private redo, file option flags and the IMU relationships with undo that can be too complicated to put in a partial sentence.
    >
Waits on event "log file sync" while performing COMMIT and ROLLBACK operations were consuming significant database time.So the root cause can be too many commits, which you should evaluate and fix if possible. You can also use Tanel Poder's snapper script, including on lgwr to see more closely what it is waiting on. See page 28: http://files.e2sn.com/slides/Tanel_Poder_log_file_sync.pdf
    >
Right. It is because Log Writer writes here synchronously, reliably, it waits until HDD writes data down and responds its written OK.
And HDDs are not the fastest things in computer. They are mechanical - that is why.
    I would recommend you :
    1. Place redo log files on fast HDDs that used preferably dedicated for this purpose only. If other I/O will frequently disturb these drives they will cause heads change tracks which causes longest HDD waits.
    2. Consider to use faster technology like SAN or SSD.Read this instant classic: http://www.pythian.com/news/28797/de-confusing-ssd-for-oracle-databases/

  • How to find if an error log table is related to a table....???

    Hi,
In Oracle 10g , maybe in older version too, there is the capability to create an error log table using the dbms_errlog package and create_error_log procedure...
    For exaample:
    exec dbms_errlog.create_error_log('EMP','EMP_ERROR')
How to find afterwards that the table EMP has a related table EMP_ERROR where errors during the inserts/updates on table EMP are registered...?????
Of course the column names in EMP_ERROR table are the same as in EMP .... but it's time consuming method to search like this way...!!!!!

  • Help: iPhoto quits on its own, doesn't generate crash log

I cannot open iphoto long enough to do anythign with it. It reports that there are "incostencies" it needs to repair, I let it do that. Then as soon as I click around in the application it quits on me. Rinse, lather, repeat. In particular, seems as though turning on Photostream makes it even more unstable.
I do not have 3ivx installed (checked /Library/Application Support/) and I even de-installed Perian (which as a 3ivx component in it). I would post an iPhoto crash log here but the last crash log generated is from 2007 unless I'm looking in the wrong spot (Console.app > Crash Reporter > iPhoto.crash.log).
Someone please help with whatever suggestions you have.

Hoo boy, excuse my egregious spelling errors in the first post. I was typing quickly while trying to get out the door for something.
So, I attempted your suggestion after getting home again. I was unable to get the behavior to repeat itself with the new test library. I even turned on photostream and played around with Faces a bit.
Now, after switching back to my default library, it hasn't crashed doing the same things that I was trying before (accessing photostream, playing with Faces, clicking around rapidly). So, for whatever reason, that may have helped it? I'll post if there's another crash later.

How can I see Crash logs from Safari, it sometimes crashes.

I have a late 2008 Mac Book Pro (2.66 Core 2 Duo) and had the same problem. Additionally I have replaced my HDD with a Crucial M4 and my CD-RW with an OCZ Vertex2 using an optibay.
The fix in My case was the Firmware upgrade of the Crucial M4 SSD from Rev 000F to 010G.
The Vertex 2 also got an upgrade to version 1.37
I keep my OS on the Crucial M4 and my Home on the OCZ.
    Hope this helps someone.
Looks like Apple, in the 10.8.2 Combo changed some drivers for the SSDs and firmware upgrade is mandatory on the nonsuported SSDs.
    Thank you.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
In the Console window, look under the heading DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION on the left for crash or panic reports. If you don't see that heading, select

    How can I find ?

You have to query V$ARCHIVED_LOG for THREAD# 2 on the source database to find the first archivelog where 12100176131169 is less than the NEXT_CHANGE#
    select SEQEUNCE# from V$ARCHIVED_LOG where THREAD#=2 and 12100176131169 between FIRST_CHANGE# and NEXT_CHANGE#
Once you provide the Sequence# and file name for the first Thread 2 file, the RECOVER command will automatically generate the expected file name for the subsequent archivelogs (of both threads).

  • How to find out the activation log for a info* from Business content

    Hi,
I work in a BW 3.5 environment where a lot of projects are being done simultaneously and a lot of Business content are getting activated. BW often activates a lot of other objects when a certain section of seemingly unrelated Business contents are activated without much caution.
When I look into some of the objects related to my area of the Business content, I find them already activated.
How do I find the activation( who, what time etc ) log history of certain objects like info objects, cubes, ODS, Infosource etc..
This will help me immensely to communicate with various people( who inadvertently activeted them)  and find issues quickly.
